Is W500 GPU dead?

Hi all,
For a while I've been searching the internet for my GPU problem and need some help. About a month ago, I've purchased a used W500 which has a T9900 CPU (3.06Ghz, 6MB cache) and 4GB of ram. As mentioned on the web, w500s have Ati FireGL v5700 switchable graphics card but since I started to use this machine, I couldn't see the GPU on the device manager. I format the computer and installed win7 and all the listed drivers. Also do many things to switch the intel 45 GPU to ati but I can never succeed. As I select the discrete mode on BIOS, then the computer doesn't start at all. The only way to restart the computer was to reset BIOS. Is the ATI chip dead or is there a different setting or so to reactivate the ATI GPU? If it is dead, can it be fixed or I'm done with the ATI staff? If you would help me I really appriciate. Thanks

Unfortunately your describing the typical symptoms of a dead ATI, only possible fix is to get another motherboard.

Thanks for all the help! This is driving me crazy :-/

You are not knocking on Apple's door here...we are just other users trying to help users and get help.
Does this issue persist if you boot the MacBook from it's Install disk? If so, it is definitely a hardware issue. Get the computer to an Apple retail store (be sure to [make an appointment|http://www.apple.com/retail] first or you may wait a long time to talk to a Mac Genius) or service provider, or call Apple (800-275-2273 in the USA) to set up a repair.
    Best of luck.

  • MSI Gt70-0NC GPU Dead??

I got a GTX 675M 2GB Graphics Card in it and i cant start any Game with it. Neither i can install any drivers.
The first Problem is, that the Graphics Card puts out an error 43 in System-Manager.
Then there´s no Bios Information of the  GPU Clock in GPU-Z.
I downloaded the latest VGA-Bios for MSI-Cards on Techpowerup.com and flashed it with nvflash:
and still got the same Problems.
I tried the Inf Modding for the Actual Graphics driver and the original Driver on the MSI-Homepage.
        Still no Luck
Is there any other MSi Rom i need???
Is it even possible to get the Graphics card to work?

i can get a GTX260m very cheap from a friend. Is there any possibillity to get this card working in the GT70??
The next best card for your laptop is going to be the 680m, it is quite a bit more powerful than the 675m and would actually be a pretty decent upgrade (the 675m wasn't that great to begin with).  You should be able to get a 680m working from ebay, try and buy an MSI one, a Dell/Alienware one can still work but it you're more likely to run into problems, you'd also have to flash the MSI vbios.
    Good luck

  • MSI GT60 2OC - Is my GPU Dead?

    Hello,
I bought MSI GT60 2OC few days ago and it seems that there is something wrong with the main GPU. I've noticed poor performance in game and when I try to update nvidia drivers I got a message that the hardware cannot be found. When I try to acces the nvidia control panel I got a message the user do not use a monitor connected to NVIDIA graphic card. What should I do? I bought it in Poland few days ago (I'm in UK now and it would be expensive to send it back to the store). I live in Coventry and I found following address on the MSI website:
    United Kingdom
    D&J HENRY LTD,
Address: Unit 3B Quinn Close, Seven Stars Industrial Estate,Coventry CV3 4LH
    Tel:(024) 76886800
    Fax:(024) 76886801
Can I just take it there to get it fixed? It's just few miles from my place.
Or maybe I need to install something/update windows 8?
I'm using original OS and all drivers from the cd that I got with the laptop (used one touch instalation).
    Regards
    Greg

    Try those drivers.
Most likely the problem is either the computer isn't switching to the NVidia card when the game is launched, or the GPU/CPU are overheating and throttling back. This could be caused by bad thermal compound or it being installed incorrectly (which isn't unheard of).
I manage to install it but still can't access the nvidia panel and can't even get through borderlands 2 menu.
Tomorrow I will call msi support and hopefully they will be able to get it fixed. Anyone already tried this UK warranty repair service based in Coventry?

  • New mobo(z87) new cpu, no video output n560GTx ti hawk

    Hello everyone
I installed a new mobo and cpu yesterday, now my GPU suddenly doesn't work anymore.
The installed mobo is an Asus z87-DELUXE, the CPU is an Intel i7 4770k.
The GPU is a MSI N560GTX-TI Hawk, the board goes in 00AE (Legacy boot mode) mode, after a minute of being in 00AE the board goes to 00A0 which is the normal state. The screen stays black and nothing happens I cannot go to bios. The VGA_LED turns on red and stays red, this means that there is a problem there (according by the book).
All LEDS are running on my GPU and the fans are running aswel, when I put in my older MSI n9500GT it does work (this one only uses one lane + no external psu connection). The onboard graphics work aswel.
I tried putting my graphics priority to PCIE, then it worked once but after that not anymore again.
The drivers have been updated, my HDD has been wiped and a fresh copy of windows 7 x64 is installed, the bios has been updated aswel to the newest version.
When I try to use my N560GTX to test my changes and put in my N9500GT again after noticing nothing changed, I get a system repair request of windows, I tried this repair twice but now it says it can't change anything on it's own.
Have I missed anything or is my GPU dead?
    My setup:
    Corsair Obsidian 650d
    Coolermaster GX 650W Bronze+
    Asus Z87-DELUXE
    Intel i7 4770k @Std clock speed - Cooled by Mugen4 PCGH Edition
    Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB DDR3 1600MHz LP
    MSI N560GTX-Ti HAWK
    Seagate Barracuda 500GB 7200RPM
1 Optical drive, no other drives
    Thx in regards
    Jonas

Well, you'd need to test the vga in another system to be sure. Could very well be a compatibility issue with your new board. Make sure it is running at the latest bios version.

Hello! I was having some problems with my HD 7850 twinfrozr III. Some weird color shifting in some very symmetric vertical columns. This problem would even be noticeable on the bios screen.
So I removed the dissipator and fan, renewed the thermal but the problem persisted. So i tried a bios flash. I used ATIWINFlash with some bios I got from another site: techpowerup. Now I had a bsod on startup, not to mention the previous problem.
I have not given up on the gpu, so I cleaned it once again with isopropilic alcohol and guess what, the problem with the vertical columns is gone, but the mess I did with the bios remains.
I already download the winflash you posted as well as the bios, but I can't seem to flash it via ATIWINFlash anymore, being that my system only boots on safemode, and safemode doesn't allow me to use atiwinflash properly.
Tried using the atiflash using a bootable USB stick (from this guide: h***://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/vidcard/34/8), but when I type "atiflash -i" I receive a "no adapter found".
    I got an ASRock 970de3/u3s3 bios 1.5
    windows 7 x64.
Any thoughts? Is my gpu dead?
    My S/N: 602-V273-01SB1203081664
Update: unninstalled ati software, reeboted, booted usbstick with FreeDos, used atiflash and bios provided by flobelix, system booted normally and no vertical columns so far.
Next step is installing catalyst 13.4 (best one for dota 2 so far).
I am afraid that if I stress the card it will show those columns again D:

  • W500 not starting - HELP - unable to locate BIOS ROM; Fatal error during GPU init

    hi gurus,
    Following problem:
when i start W500 (ubuntu) it stays with the black screen, not even displaying initial ThinkPad message, where you might press the ThinkVantage blue button, to go to BIOS. It just stays black and does nothing.
Than I press Power button for a few seconds to shut it down and try again. Still black screen.
The same procedure again and again and sometimes  W500 boots up, sometimes wants to go to recovery mode, sometimes not.
Sometimes, after the black screen it displays the message:
    Invalid ROM contents
ERROR Unable to locate BIOS ROM
    Fatal error during GPU init
    Anyone had the same problems?
What are the possible checks i might execute, to check up W500?
    cheers
    lenowiow

Update: I have now tried compiling vbios.bin and int10.bin directly into the kernel. No success.

  • W500 9cells battery suddenly dead. No previous warning.

I know batteries gets wear over time, and that once should be exchange, but I believe that a suddenly dead is not normal
Up to yesterday, batterie has been working good, and after aprox 400 charging cycles baterie was performing quite good (more than 1 hour of batterie). Mostly with charging cicles from 55% to 75%.
Today, suddenly, running on batterie on about 40% to 45% the computer got turnned off, plugen in, turning again, message was clear: your battery condition is poor and WILL NOT CHARGE AT ALL (not exact those words)
is that way definitelly a dead batery?
nothing to be done? even as a "SAI" batterie ?
    best regards!!
    and happy holidays

Sure it is the battery, a second battery works without issues in the same computer
About SAI, sorry, SAI is spanish, I meant UPS. And as a  most of the time, I have the laptop pluged in. So, a battery that would lask matter of minutes would be enough to avoid unexpected loss of power (and to avoid daily wear of the second battery)
I presume that if the cotrol circuit fail, there is nothing to do with that battery, even the cells have half life trough ...

I just changed my hard drive, stuck in a windows 7 cd, installed it successfully. Installed chrome, dropbox and system update. Ran Lenovo system update, and at some point the computer restarted itself, made three loud beeps (long followed by two short) and thats it.
The bluetooth light is on, as is the power on, battery, and charger lights. Screen is dead.
What happened? What are those three beeps? What do i do?

  • MSI GT60 ONE Dead GPU or Motherboard?

    Hi guys
So I owned MSI GT60 ONE and it doesn't want to boot even into POST. The power button only flash then it turn off again, I remove my battery and only powers up with AC adapter or vice-versa it still the same. Then, I removed the GPU and try running it with integrated cpu it works normally. It boots into Windows, completed the prime torture test even playing games normally. All of the notebook features function normally so it seems clearly my gpu is died.
However what bothers me is from what I know, if a gpu is died it can still turn on and working even though showing no display at the screen or displaying artifacts, but this in my case it refused to boot. My question is, is it the GPU only that died or there might be some problems in the motherboard? Because if I buy a replacement GPU, Im afraid to encounter any problems in the future.  Sadly and very unlucky, my warranty is expired last month  and I dont have any GPU spare to test it.
Thanks any help is really appreciated

I would contact MSI about this.

The MSI GT60 0NE isn't that old, it should still be under warranty.

  • MBP with a dead Nvidia GPU- possible workaround?

I am one of these who have a MacBook Pro with a dead NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics chip. Other than that it functions perfectly. I'm pass the warentee and apparently even that replaced the motherboard with another with the same chip on it (no pin-for-pin replacement ever to be made) so will die again sooner or later (mine took four and a half years). I can still connect to mine via screen sharing, the onboard Intel graphics work but don't connect through the display connector to the outer world. I had an idea of something to try and wonder if anyone out there have tried it yet. There are Expresscard/32 cards out there to add monitors to the MBP. They have their own GPUs and connectors (DVI and SVGA). Has anyone tried these out on a MBP with a dead NVIDIA chipset? I can get them on Amazon for $70 or so but would rather not gamble at this stage but may try soon. The MBP is not my primary machine but it is a drag that it can only be used via screen sharing.
    -James

I found this article on iFixit :
    http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/9045/MBP+A1226+Logic+Board+last+resort+fix+fo r+nVidia+video+chip
What the did was intentionally overheat the MBP while it is upside down and this re-solders the chip back in place. Basically running som graphics intense program while it's wrapped in a blanket. Many sucess stories. I will try this when I get the nerve (I mean it works now via shared screens so it may break it further).

  • W500: Dead Ethernet Port

Today my ethernet port stopped working.  While Linux can see it (I'm running a brand new install of Linux Mint 14), and it appears to attempt to connect, I cannot acquire an IP address and connect to any network.  I've verified that the ethernet cable works just fine, and the ethernet does not work either with a live CD or in Windows (I had beed trying to set up a dual boot, but give up and went Linux-only when I couldn't get Windows 7 to connect to the LAN, erroniously thinking it was a driver issue).  What can I do?  The wireless on my college campus is absolutely terrible; it's likley going to take three hours just to get my fresh Linux install up to date.  I don't have the money for a new computer at this time.

It looks alright.  It was going into an infinite loop of trying (and failing) to get an IP address.  Ironically it started working again when I got back to my room.  I wonder what it is about the network in the applied CS labs that my laptop hates, since the same cable/port on the wall would work fine for other computers.

  • T61 with dead GPU... should I toss it?

I bought a T61 in the spring of 2008.  The graphics adapter (NVidia NVS 140M) has croaked.  No video, either on the main display or an external display
My understanding is that thieGPU is soldered onto the main board.  I can't get anyone to even give me an estimate of what this repair would cost (I would have to pay Lenovo just to ask them this question.)
Would anyone here care to offer suggestions what I can do with this now useless machine that I paid $1400 for?  Are there service options through Lenovo that would make sense?  Should I try to find a replacement mobo on EBay, and if I did, is this replacement a task that a mortal with a screwdriver could hope to accomplish?  Should I just part it out?
    Thanks,
    Allan
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Some solutions and suggestions are available in this very long thread:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/T61-and-prior-T-series-ThinkPad/T61p-exhibiting-1-long-and-2-short-beep-a...
If you don't get Lenovo to fix it for free, your best bet is to buy a board with Intel integrated graphics, since these almost never fail. You're looking at $200 or so for a replacement planar from a reputable source.
All of this makes sense only if you like the machine very much. If not, part it out and move on. T400 and later ThinkPads do not suffer from this problem, and are very nice machines overall.
    Good luck.

  • MacBook Pro (Early 2011) behaves strange after GPU replacement

I have an early MBP 2011 and had the GPU issue. After Apple finally announced the replace program I immediatelly went to a a stor and the fixed it. But now my System acts very strangely ever since. Here a list of all the strange things:
    - The overall performance is not as good as it was bevore
    - Yosemite allways asks for my iCloud Password on startup. If I enter it, the message just reappears. this happens till I click on "cancel" twice! (In the accounts settings everything is running and all the options in the iCloud menu are checked)
    - the spotlight search does not work anymore. If I enter something and press Enter nothing happens except spotlight is freezing on the spot for some time till it disappears.
    - Safari, iTunes and Mail have no, of very little, internet connection. But the strange thing is: Chrome does!!!
    - Finder sometimes does not work correctly. I have to restart it quite often (I never had to do this before) and sometimes it does not react when clicking on the dock icon.
For me all this makes no sense. What is wrong with my system?
I should mention: I built in 8GB of ram (over two years ago) and I put an SSD in and removed the optical drive (over a year ago). I use the TRIM enabler for the SSD.
    Thanks for any help!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1281 ' 0.5 0.25 50 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 5 5 5 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1 300 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • How do I get after effects to render with my GPU?

Yea, really noob question, but I can't figure it out!
Spent literally HOURS trying to find how to do this..  Use my GTX 670 to render instad of CPU.  Can't figure it out.  I finally (I think) figured out where to change the setting to raytraced rendering, but it still REFUSES to use it.  I can't work like this!  Countless hours to render a 4 min video with an i7?  I am checking with a  hardware monitor, and my GPU isn't getting used.
I don't have the time (or inclination) to watch hours and hours of tutorial videos.  I am the type of person that uses templates and modifies them to my needs/desires, so pointing me to a "generic" after effect tutorial website will do no good.
Now, I only mention this to show that I don't come running for help every time I have a small problem, and refuse to try and find the answer myself.  I have myself learned how to edit text, make it appear and disappear.  Slow down and speed up an entire composition and much much more all by using google.  But I obviously can't get the wording right with google because I can't find a solution.

You cannot enforce GPU raytracing if your card is not supported and that is that. If adding the card to the raytracer_supported_cards.txt file and updating the graphics driver doesn't do it, then nothing will. You are using dead technology, anyway.
