Is WCS a must with 4400 LAN controller

Hi,
We're looking at the 4400 series wireless LAN controller with Lite APs. It's not clear if the WCS is required or if the 4400 has management capabilities in it and the WCS may not be required. So, can we run a 4400 series without a WCS and still maintain management of our wireless network. If so, what capabilities would we be missing...if any?
...thanks in advance.....J

Hi Jamie,
The WCS is not required to run any WLC or WiSM. It is a very nice management tool but it is not a must. We have been running LWAPP for a few years now without the WCS and we are just now getting ready to deploy it;

  • Can cisco CAP2702i connect to Cisco3850 switch with wireless LAN controller license via another switch ?

If i connect cisco AP - CAP2702i to another switch, and use trunk port between Cisco3850 and the other switch , can the AP able to register with Cisco3850 with wireless LAN controller  ?   or the AP has to directly connect to Cisco3850 in order to register?

The AP and 3850 wireless management are in same Vlan( vlan202). The AP is new unit and did not join MC before.
    What i did on 3850 :
input command - wireless management interface vlan 202
                              - ap cdp
                              - wireless mobility controller
Is there any config i miss out on 3850 and any config need to be set on AP ?
From Ap console output show me "could not discover WLC using dhcp ip". Is it due to AP dont have IP address? If AP register with WLC through layer 2 , i believe there is no related with IP.Correct me if i'm wrong.
Due to the 3850 is not a POE, the AP unable directly connect to 3850  . I guess have to use power adapter to power on the AP.

  • NAC with Wireless LAN controller

There are 10 VLANs coming out of wireless controller (trunk to L2 Switch).
How do we implement NAC so that clients are forced to go to NAC instead of the L3 gateway?

How Can I configure the Wireless Lan controller?
    Thanks

    Hi Alfred,
The WLC can be completly configured and operated without the WCS. The WCS is a nice addition for the management especially when running multiple WLC's but is not required.

  • 4402 LAN Controller and 44 AP Point with CUCM 7.1

First time going to configure 4402 LAN Controller with 44 AP with 7921 wireless IP Phone, Please light me with document and info to configure 4402 lan controller with Access point.
Just connecting Controller and AP in switch both will get registered, I have two LAN Controller for redundancy [ how to configure redundancy in controller ].
For layer 3 roaming what are the basic steps I should configure in controller and AP.

Here's a link to the doc that outlines how to configured the controller to best support a 7921:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/7921g/6_0/english/deployment/guide/7921dply.pdf
For redundancy you will want to have the controller in the same mobility group:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/7921g/6_0/english/deployment/guide/7921dply.pdf
Having them in the same mobility group will also take care of any roaming between controllers.

  • Integrate Wireless LAN Controller with Windows IAS

I would like to have internal users authenticate to Wireless LAN Controller Module using Windows IAS server. What option are there for me to present to users? Do they get a separate domain username/password box? Can it pass thru their existing domain login credentials if they already logged into Windows domain? Does any additional client/laptop software need to be installed?

What you should do is configure PEAP and use the IAS so users can authenticate with their AD credentials.
    This should help you:

  • Replacing 2006 wlc with 4400 - WCS templates

    Dear,
I'm in the need of temporary replacing a 2006 controller with a 4404 controller. I have all the 2006 templates in wcs. Can i expect big problems when pushing these templates to the 4404 ?

I don't see any issue with using a template, as long as the wlc's are on the same code... just in case you have templates with additional features specific to that train or later versions. You still would have to setup the WLC specific configuration prior to pushing out templates.

  • Cisco Wireless Control System need wireless Lan Controller ?

Cisco Wireless Control System need wireless Lan Controller , for Rogue detection

    Hi Joao,
The WCS is used in conjuntion with the WLC (Wireless Lan Controller) for Rogue Detection. It is not a must for this function but more of an add-on :)
The Cisco WCS is an optional network component that works in conjunction with Cisco Aironet Lightweight Access Points, Cisco wireless LAN controllers and the Cisco Wireless Location Appliance.
    From this doc;
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6305/index.html
    Overview of WCS
The Cisco Wireless Control System (WCS) is a Cisco Unified Wireless Network Solution management tool that adds to the capabilities of the web user interface and command line interface (CLI), moving from individual controllers to a network of controllers. WCS includes the same configuration, performance monitoring, security, fault management, and accounting options used at the controller level and adds a graphical view of multiple controllers and managed access points.
WCS runs on Windows 2003 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 4.0 and AS 4.0 servers. On both Windows and Linux, WCS can run as a normal application or as a service, which runs continuously and resumes running after a reboot.
The WCS user interface enables operators to control all permitted Cisco Unified Wireless Network Solution configuration, monitoring, and control functions through Internet Explorer 6.0 or later. Operator permissions are defined by the administrator using the WCS user interface Administration menu, which enables the administrator to manage user accounts and schedule periodic maintenance tasks.
WCS simplifies controller configuration and monitoring while reducing data entry errors with the Cisco Unified Wireless Network Controller autodiscovery algorithm. WCS uses the industry-standard SNMP protocol to communicate with the controllers.

  • User names from Wireless LAN Controller

    Hi all
I'm trying to get a report out of a Cisco 4402 Wireless LAN controller, showing all the current clients on a particular WLAN profile, with their user name.
The Monitor -> Clients screen shows me all the MAC addreses, and I can filter by WLAN Profile Name to home in on the clients I'm interested in.  When I click on a MAC address for more detail, I can see the correctly populated User Name on the Client Properties screen - so the WLC definitely knows all the detail I need...
Ideally I want spreadheet with a list of usernames of currently connected users (or even better, users that have connected over a time period).  I can't see any way to export this data without doing it manually (and I have 270ish clients at any one time).
I've tried at the command line, with a "show clients summary", which at least gives me a table I can copy and paste into a spreadsheet, but again the username detail is only displayed with a "show clients detail MACADDRESS" - and the MACADDRESS field won't take a wildcard.
I've also tried examining the log files, and setting up SysLog to a syslog server - but I haven't observed user names in any of the logs I've seen.
The WLC is on version 4.2.176.0 - and doing an upgrade isn't very convenient at present - although I might consider taking the pain if a later release provides the funcationaility I need.
Does anyone have any ideas on this one?
    Thanks!

    Dear Scott,
I have some points to get clarified for step by step approach that has to be carried out during our downtime, or which is best option for this migration.
Is that the WLC running different code will be able to join Mobility Group.  i.e. irrespective of Model and Code ?
    1. Do i have to create a mobility group and include the existing WLC and new 3 numbers of WLC , thus when i remove the Existing WLC from the Group the Ap will try to get assosiated with other WLC in the group.
    2. In WCS changing the Access point template configuring primary, secondary , tertiary Wireless LAN controller with New wireless LAN controller, during the down time this activity will be performed.
Which method or way to proceed during the downtime. Looking for your expert view.
    Thanks .... Arun

  • Tecra S2 - Lan Controller is disabled after FritzCard PCMCIA installation

My Notebook is a Tecra S2.
After a FritzCard PCMCIA v2.0 is plugged in, the Lan Controller is disabled.
Not before the FritzCard PCMCIA is removed and the S2 is re-booted, the LAN Controller can be re-activated.
The LAN-Controller is identified by the device manager as an "Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller". I tried the latest drivers, for the AVM FritzCard as well as for the Marvell Yukon.(1.the original Toshiba LAN Driver from the recover-CD, 2.the latest driver from the Toshiba Support download page and an driver, offered by the Marvell-Web-Site).
All combinations are causing the problem mentioned above
    Need a solution !!!
    Regards
    Ronald

    Hi Ronald
I have no much experience with FritzCard but a friend of mine told me that if someone use this card it is very important to install the provided software before the card can be used. I am pretty sure that there must be some manuals how to install the card properly.
The another thing is that the both devices use the same resources (IRQ).

  • 4402 LAN Controller - Questions

    Hi
We have 4402 LAN Controller an our existing 5 stanalone AP will be configure with LC.
Is it possible to have Multiple SSID as,
    DATA-ssid
    VOICE-ssid
    GUEST-ssid
&& with strong security with different keys for each ssid
    Authentication for DATA-ssid through 802.1Q
We also plan to have IP-PHONE soon and would be integrated with VOICE-ssid ; sadly it woul be Nortel IP Phone.
    I hope no integration issues.
    Thanks
    ST

You bet, we're currently running 8 BSSIDs on our APs at different sites, in fact you'll probably want to tie each SSID to their own VLAN as well.  If you're planning on using VoWL (Voice over Wireless LAN) you may want to see if those phones support WMM (essentialy Wireless QOS).  More info on WMM can be found here: https://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/solutions/Enterprise/Mobility/vowlan/41dg/vowlan_ch2.pdf.
Also, you can authenticate data via dot1x as well.  What's cool is that if you're running ACS 5 then you can set WMM levels and VLANs based on criteria and have one SSID for a variety of purposes.  What version of code are you running on the 4400?
    Hope this helps

  • KT6Delta onboard lan controller freezes machine!

KT6Delta onboard lan controller freezes machine after a recently purchase of new ram.
            TwinMOS PC3200 TwiSTER DDR 512MB CL2
            Chip = WLCSP, (DDR-PC400MHz)
Why i believe the ram purchase is the issue, you say?
Well you see this ram model is not on the supported list on the motherboard information page to msi. allthough the 256mb model is.
so i had to manually configure the DRAM timing so that my computer would run at fsb 166 and ram at 400mhz.
But lets get back on track. Everytime i copy over the network (large files that use top network speed) the machine either freezes or i might get away with a complete network connetcion loss. so i have tried to copy at different speeds and foudn out that 2 mbyte a sec is possible without the computer hanging.
i contacted http://www.broadcom.com support base and they did not know of any simmilar issues regarding the broadcom 57x integrated network hardware. But they did say that my ram might be the issue because the network card sends its DMA packets there.
    and i quote:
"Response from Broadcom: I am afraid this is not a known issue to me.  But if you are saying with the different RAM this problem was not seen, this point directly to the RAM you use on this system and the compatibility issue.  The RAM could for sure cause this type of the problem since the network adapter DMAs packets into and from the system memory (RAM)."
So can anyone help me? i really want to be able to use my network hardware normally and not being forced to sell my current ram chip and buy a new one.
I can't remember all dram timings options but here are those i do remember.
    CL = 2.5 (yes didn't work with 2)
    Row precharge time = 5
    Ras pulse width = 8
Ras to cas delay = 5

What are your temps? Freezing often happens when CPU usage makes it too hot. I believe there is a way to check CPU usage in XP...
CPU temp is around 45-52 depending on what im doing.

I have a hard time convincing myself that the symtom - the LAN - is the cause.
What do you mean? its the ram chip thats the cause for the network freeze (or at least that's where it all is pointing at).
