Is WiFi necessary for locating an iPod Touch using MobileMe?

Just wondering if it also works without a WiFi connection?

okay that makes sense to me.
now there is still the question left if the ipod really has to be connected to the wifi network or if it is already enough when it is in the range of the network.
this would be really helpful because if not you can only find your ipod if the thief is stupid enough to connect to a wifi network without deleting the MobileMe-account in the settings
