    I am having a problem with writing and reading an object that has another object in it. The purpose of the class is to write a order that has multiple items in it. And there will be several orders. This is for an IB project, where one of the requirements is to utilize a hierarchical composite data structure. That is, it is "one that contains more than one element and at least one of the elements is a composite data structure.     ok i got reading to work to a certain extent... but the prob is i cnt seem to save my innerCustOrdObj proprly...when ever i look for a record using the gotorecordbtn, the outerobject, which is the orderDetails, seems to change but the innerCustOrdObj remains the same... heres the new code..

    Can someone please help me. I need to make a program that uses a class or servlet that implements Serializable and then use the values of the variables in servlets.
    The first is using it to validate login. then changing the color of the background, header and footer of each servlet.
    the variables in the Serialized file are all Strings for color, username, password, header text and footer text.
    I tried using the applet tag to run the class in the servlet but it is not working.

         }Both the User class and the methods are found within the NumberStore class.

    The User class indeed does not contain any references at all to the NumberStore classIf 'User' is nested inside 'NumberStore' and it isn't static, User does indeed have a hidden reference to the outer class NumberStore. That's how the syntax 'NumberStore.this' works.
    I can say with absolute certainty that an object which was not marked as serializable was written to the users.dat file.Quite apart from the fact that the source code of ObjectOutputStream makes it utterly impossible, I don't see how you can possibly say that 'with absolute certainty'. For a start there's no information in the file to indicate what interfaces were and weren't implemented by the class of the serialized object at the time it was serialized.
    I'm not absolutely positive about whether or not it bombed out on this occassion, or when trying to re-read it next time aroundNotSerializableException is only thrown when writing, not when reading, so that answers that.
    Do you still have the file? I'd like to see exactly what was written. In any case a serialization file that copped any kind of IOException when being written should have been thrown away immediately, you're right about that.
    BTW your reading code is wrong. You shouldn't be testing for null, unless you are deliberately writing a null as a sentinel value. You should be catching EOFException.

    Hey, if you have yet to obtain a remote reference from the app server ...then we are into pandora's box. I lost three whole heads of hair getting up on JBoss when I first started. You want to check out the JBoss forums on the JBoss website, and the enterprise javabeans forum here. Search some posts and read the free JBoss manual.
    Unfortunately, there isn't a 'here, do this' solution to getting connected with JBoss. There are quite a few gotcha's. There are descriptors, descriptor syntax ...and this changes between releases so there seems to be alot of people saying 'here, do this' ...but you try and it doesn't work (wrong release). Here are some descriptors that I threw up recently for someone ...a place to start.

    Like the title says, if I remove "implements serializable" from the class declaration, I can still write out the file to XML. Why?
    Also, I'm using hungarian notation instead of following the normal javabean naming convention. Shouldn't this break the XMLEncoding/decoding process ??

Since you have setName and setAge, and no BeanInfo (I think that's the name) class to say otherwise, the result is that in JavaBeans world, you have a name and an age property, and they're accessed through those methods.

  • My class is serializing w/o implementing serializable

    I have a class Foo that implements Serializable.
    Foo has a data member that is an instance of class Bar.
    Class Bar does NOT implement Serializable.
    When I serialize an instance of Foo out to a file and
    then deserialize it back in, I'm seeing Bar's no-arg
    constructor being called.
    Shouldn't I be getting IOExceptions on the write and
    and read of my Foo instance when the JVM tries to
    write/read the Bar member, since only classes that implement
    Serializable can be serialized/deserialized?

The subtype may assume this responsibility only if the class it extends has an accessible no-arg constructor to initialize the class's state. It is an error to declare a class Serializable in this case. The error will be detected at runtime."
    There seems to be a mistake in the second to last sentence. I would think itr should say 'It is an error to declare a class Serializable if this is not the case'.

    Both ServletContext and Session allows storing objects as a name value pair set and they can be accessed across several servlets/JSP's. How do they differ?

    The Main difference is their visibility or rather the scope of the varibles differs depending on whether they are stored in the session or the Servlet Context.
    When you say that an Object is stored in the session then it means that the Object is available to the application for duration of the particulars user's session i.e. as long as the user's session is active the Object is available though not for others who will have a different session and so will not be able to access this information.
    Whereas, when you add the Object to Servlet Context you are setting up the object to be visible throughout the application for duration of the application itself and for any component that is art of the application
    So if we have a list of Object storage/sharing mechanisms listed in descending order of object life span/visibility then we have:
    Application - ServletContext
    Session - HttpSession
    Request - ServletRequest
    Page

    We need to implement a fast solution for reporting to our existing web application. Application is totally based on stored procedures written in PL/SQL.
    We have already java classes for drawing different types of charts
    named Chartdirector (http://www.advsofteng.com/)
    This library can create chart images in memory.
    I have already read about calling java classes from PL/SQL and SQLJ too.
    My questions are;
    1. Is this safe to include classes to database and create
    reports by using loadjava in real life. I mean not in theory, in real life?
    2. Is there any experiments of the audience about this method?
    3. Would it be any performance problems about this?
    4. Should i prefer to use any Java container and jsps instead of this method?
    I will continue to research for necessary steps after i could see the light :)

    Yes.

    Experiments and actual implementation - yes. It works. Granted, it does not always work as easy as running the Java code from the command line. But it does work.

    This is a potential problem with any software code.

    To be honest, I prefer not using Java for web graphics as I'm not impressed with the quality and flexibility of the graphs generated. I prefer using (and paying for commercial use) for the JPGraph classes for PHP - and using that from PL/SQL (via Zend Core for Oracle).
    Another option is to use SVG and generated SVG directly from PL/SQL. But this requires a browser plugin and SVG also does not look that great. (this is btw what Oracle's HTMLDB does and uses)

    You are not supported to create a HttpSession by java client. Only J2EE web container can create it.

    ServletConfig serves a very specific purpose, a means to get configuration parameters from the web.xml INTO you servlet. AFAIK, it doesn't serve much purpose beyond that...
    ServletContext provides the mechanism for a Servlet to communication with the Container. You can get path information, use it to store application wide attributes and parameters, etc.
    The two really have absolutely nothing in common. So to answer your rather vague question:
    "The difference b/w ServletContext and ServletConfig: Everything."
    Do you have a more specific question? Is there a particular thing (like maybe the fact they both have methods named getInitParameter and getInitParmaterNames....) that is confusing you?

    here I send You the class with the main problem. The call queryDataSet.refresh();
    is the timeconsuming part.
    We are using WL6.1sp2, Oracle 8.1.7 with classes12. In our environment we can
    not use connectionpools.
    It comes back with a timeout AND the data. Calling it again immediately it takes
    2/3 of the time the timeout is set.
