Is X11 Part of Leopard?

I am uninstalling an Open Office version that required use of X11. When I originally installed it, I swear X11 was part of that install. I am removing OO 2.4 and was going to remove X11 as well, but I'm told in the OO forum that X11 is part of Leopard and should be left alone. Is this the case? Did I maybe install over a version of X11 when I originally installed OO???

yes, X11 comes with the OS.

yes, that's what happened. I would leave X11 alone. there is no harm in removing it but you might need it later.

  • X11 libraries in Leopard?

I have (I believe) a fairly standard 10.5 installation, and I'm trying to compile.. Well, I'm trying to compile T.38modem, which requires OPAL which requires pwlib which requires libX11. Kinda dumb, but whatever.
The problem is that in /usr/X11/lib, I have the following:
    Brians-mini$ nol libX11.*
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 14 Mar 3 2008 libX11.6.2.0.dylib@ -> libX11.6.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 18 Feb 20 17:53 libX11.6.dylib@ -> libX11.6.2.0.dylib
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 14 Feb 20 17:54 libX11.dylib@ -> libX11.6.dylib
Anyone see anything odd with that???
So, where am I supposed to get libX11.dylib? (or .6.2.0.dylib, or whatever)
    thanks

It's your machine. What else has been scrambled on it? No way to tell. If you have more problems later on, how do you know that something else wasn't corrupted?
MacOS X Security gets a lot of press, but incompetent programmers are a much greater threat. When you give your admin password to an installer, you give that programmer complete control over your system.
I've been burned by this myself. I installed some software that did recursive chmod and chown operations on system directories. What a mess! I used Repair Permissions to fix it, but weeks later I discovered that it had also trashed my Photoshop installation. Repair Permissions only repairs Apple software, not 3rd parties.
I have no good answer for you. You just have to be very careful. Before you give out your admin rights, make really, really sure you know what is going to happen and agree with it.

  • Reinstall X11 on Snow Leopard

What is the best way to uninstall X11 from a system that has been upgraded to Snow Leopard?
Then I'm going to reinstall X11 from the Snow Leopard disc.
I'm motivated to do this because I'm seeing some flaky stuff from a unix application and I suspect that X11 may be the cause.

    Bill Scott wrote:
One problem I ran into is that a newer version of X11.app was released that never made it into SL. If you have software compiled against that, reinstalling SL X11 isn't going to fix it for you.
Good point about recompiling. The problem application is one that I compile, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my previous Leopard X11 was the culprit and compiling against the Snow Leopard X11 will fix things.
I too noticed that SL X11 is an older version of what what ultimately available on Leopard. Strange.
I'm keeping my eye on the xquartz wiki for an update for SL.

  • Is PHP part of Leopard Server?

I am about to install a PHP program called Jomscocial which is a community program for a website that is hosted on my server, am I correct in thinking that PHP is standard on the server etc.

There is a php environment present within Mac OS X Server 10.5, yes.
Do check your software for what php extensions might be required. There are a few php extensions around that Mac OS X Server lacks, which means you'll potentially be rebuilding php for your box. The folks over at TopicDesk have a few documents, including one covering how to [add GD2 to php on Leopard Server|http://downloads.topicdesk.com/docs/AddingGD2_to_PHP_on_OS_X_Server_10_5Leopard.pdf]
Also be cautious around Internet-facing php installations in general, as packages based on that are common security targets; your servers will be attacked. (Not may be attacked. Will be.) Stay current, and stay paranoid.

  • Is Xcode 3.0 released or only part of Leopard preview?

I was reading that Xcode 3.0 was 'released' today, but it has not been posted to the ADC Member site (yet)? Anyone know if this new version is going to be available like the other releases on the ADC member site, or if it is only going out with the Leopard preview's for now? Thanks.

I believe it was probably "released" to those who got
the Leopard preview. I think the biggest proof of
    that is
this page, which claims Xcode 3.0 was written in
Objective-C 2.0. As such, it certainly won't run on
Tiger, at least until (if?) Tiger gets updated with a
    new Objective-C runtime.
I tend to disagree. Apple doesn't expect developers to use an IDE that is only good for the latest OS release. Most programs I am familiar with support 2 or 3 releases back. They have made it so easy to create Universal Binaries that load the appropriate version depending on what chip is present -- it is hard to believe that recognizing the current OS is difficult. Also, they say that ObjC 2 is completely backwardly-compatible with ObjC, which suggests that it is a superset of the original.
Developers have always had to make choices of embracing new technologies (like CoreData) vs. supporting older releases.
I suspect we'll be seeing Xcode 3.0 is a matter of days or weeks. Maybe Premier and Select members will get a short period of exclusivity. If the numbers I have heard are correct (XCode 3.0 >1.2 GB download and 750,000 ADC members), then Apple is looking to serve up about a PETAbyte of data!
    I wonder
    1) When will it become cheaper to mail everyone a DVD?
    2) How much of that 1.2GB bulk is due to their backward approach to Internationalization? Instead of having you list the languages you want, they sent all of them and make you remove the ones you don't want.

  • Installing x11 for Snow Leopard

Some weeks ago I accidentally deleted the app x11 from my iMac (I have the version 10.6.8).
Now I am trying to install a game that needs that app. I've tried to download and re-install the x11 from the Apple website, but when I'm installing it, a message shows up saying that "x11 can't be installed. a more recent version of this software is already installed". but that's impossible, since I deleted it! I've been looking through my iMac with the Finder and the app x11 doesn't show up, so it is definitely not in my computer.
What can I do to install the x11 in my iMac again? I don't think it's possible that the app still remains in my computer.

Without digging out my own install disc I can't be 100% sure, but selecting the application in Pacifist and clicking (I think) "restore to default location" or something similar should do all that's necessary.
Pacifist's instructions are pretty good, and their support team will usually be very helpful if you still have a problem.

  • X11 problem after upgrade to Snow Leopard - keyboard unresponsive

I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger.
I use Sun's Secure Global Desktop native client which runs using X11. It worked fine under Tiger, but since the upgrade it isn't working - the native client starts up (and starts the X server), it responds to the trackpad and I can focus on the login box, but when I type nothing shows up, so I can't log in!
I installed X11 with Snow Leopard and as far as I can tell it is running OK - Gimp seems to work. The SGD native client log says this:
    Smart card library loaded: /System/Library/Frameworks/PCSC.framework/PCSC
Smart card support failed to initialize (0x8010001d)
    Server version 4 3 0 915
    Client version 4 2 0 983
    Info: local X server available
Any assistance would be very gratefully received.

If other X11 apps are working except this one, then perhaps it's incompatible with Snow. To see if this is the case I would suggest installing Snow on a freshly erased drive (could be an external or other internal) and see if the problem is fixed. Could be the result of upgrading. You did upgrade Leopard, not Tiger, right? Can't do the latter without first upgrading to Leopard.

  • X11 broken by Snow Leopard

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard which broke X11. Previously I had installed something to get X11 working properly (possibly XQuartz but I'm not sure, all I remember is that it took days of fiddling to get X11 working under Leopard).
The error I am getting from X11.app is:
    dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/X11/lib/libpixman-1.0.dylib
    Referenced from: /Applications/Utilities/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11.bin
Reason: Incompatible library version: X11.bin requires version 15.0.0 or later, but libpixman-1.0.dylib provides version 13.0.0
I reinstalled X11 from the Snow Leopard CD, which recommended installing the latest combo update. I downloaded the latest combo update, rebooted, and repaired permissions, but I still get this error.
After reading yet other messages here I downloaded the latest XQuartz.app and this gives me this message:
    dyld: Library not loaded: /opt/X11/lib/libpixman-1.0.dylib
    Referenced from: /Applications/Utilities/XQuartz.app/Contents/MacOS/X11.bin

OK I found a file /libpixman-1.0.dylib which, once I removed it, fixed the problem. Is it a bug that the two X11 applications are both confused about which libpixman-1.0.dylib they are actually loading? They both were reporting that they were loading their own version of the library, but it seems that both were loading /libpixman-1.0.dylib

  • Safari no longer loads bookmarks after Leopard installed

I've recently upgraded to Leopard but since the upgrade I can no longer get to my bookmarks in Safari. I suspected that the file containing the bookmark info may have become corrupt, but after importing the file into Firefox, the bookmarks work fine. The problem seems definitely with Safari. Anybody experiencing the same problem? Any solutions?

  • Cellular modem is not recognised by Leopard

Hi. My CMOTech CCU-550 cellular modem worked fine with 10.4.10.
Since I installed Leopard, even after checking all the configurations I keep getting the message that "the device does not exist" when I try to connect.
My supplier tech support does not support (ie does not know anything about) macs...
Anybody out there with any ideas?

I'm using a HUAWEI HSDPA USB Modem to access the internet via GPRS 2G & 3G. (Vodafone NZ)
Activity Monitor in Tiger showed up and downloads in Network, in Leopard nothing.
Tiger's Internet connect is now part of Leopard's System Prefs > Network.
I use the modem status icon from there, on the menu bar, to get online.
Does System Pref > Network show the modem?
Do you have a Mac OSX disc from your internet provider? if so check for an update, reinstall anyway.
I often get the modem not found message after a restart. Unplug from USB count slowly to 10 and reattach, wait for a minute and try again. Try a different USB if available. If you have third party connect software from your internet provider try that, three or four times somedays. Try alternating with the menu bar option.
Mine tells me to use the Internet connect App which of course doesn't exist in Leopard. I use the menu bar option instead. Seems to take a while to get noticed some days
I use CheetahWatch software to keep track now Activity Monitor no longer works. It works, very well.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/33154
    Hope this helps.
Cut out again with modem not found ~ only had to try three times
It wasn't any better with Tiger.

  • X11 does not start on 10.5.5

    Hi,
I have installed X11 from the original supplement disc. When I dblclick on X11 symbol it starts something and then the docking bar starts to flash showing the X11 icon and then removing it again.
However no X-Windows screen is to see neither an X-Term or something?
What do I need to configure here?

The original X11 provided with Leopard is flawed.
After installing it do the following
    Go to http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki
Download X11.pkg version 2.3.3.2 (near the top of the pages) and the localization updates.
Install en then you should have a properly working X11.
You do not need to start X11 before starting an X11 application.
In particular you should not set the DISPLAY environment variable yourself.

  • Is Front Row part of the 'Bundled Software'?

With the Leopard update disk I got when purchasing my Mac Mini in February, is there an option to reinstall just the bundled software, without being forced to reinstall the entire OS?. Is Front Row part of that bundled software package?

bundled software means ilife ( iphoto, imovie, garage band, iweb and idvd). Is this what you are talking about? ilife is not part of leopard so it wouldn't be on the leopard upgrade DVD. if you want to reinstall it you need either a separate ilife DVd if you bought it or the original Tiger install disks that came with the computer. Insert the tiger disk, open it in finder and double-click on 'install bundled software only". this will reinstall ilife.
Is Front Row part of that bundled software package?
no. Front Row is part of the OS itself. you can reinstall Front Row fromthe leopard install DVD using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com>.

  • Rectangular text selection in Leopard

By accident I found that if I hold down the Shift + Option keys and drag the cursor with the trackpade on my MBP I get a rectangular selection of text. I can select the middle of each of ten lines, e.g. A Cross-hair appears as the selector-tool.
This has been a neat feature of Nisus Writer for a decade, hold down option to get a rectangular selection. I have mostly used it to remove items from a tabbed list, say take out the addresses to leave only the names and phone numbers.
But is is now part of Leopard? I did a little search of this forum, and came across nothing closer than the dictum that "selection methods are generally a feature of the particular application," but this works in Nisus, TextEdit, DevonThinkPro, and MarsEdit. Did not work for me in Safari, more's the pity.
Is there a pretty-complete guide to such features which doubtless do exist? Maybe in David Pogue's book on Leopard?

That did not work with my computer....
EDIT: Never mind I was trying in Safari... It does work in Text Edit...
    Neat...
