IS YOSEMITE AIRDROP NEEDS BLUETOOTH?
After updating to yosemite we have to enable bluetooth for transfer file via airdrop. This will take lot of time to transfer. Last version we have not face this type problem while using airdrop - wifi. Could you please send us a remedy?
When Bluetooth is on and not connected it uses very little power as described earlier. As Ralph9430 said, you can turn it off in Control Center.
If you would like to tell Apple it should be turned off when turnign AirDrop off, let them know here, www.apple.com/feedback and click on the appropriate link.

I have downloaded Yosemite but my bluetooth keyboard is not recognised
after downloading and installing yosemite, my apple bluetooth keyboard is not connected with my mac mini.
as a result, i can't write the password to get inYou might need to connect a wired keyboard and then go to your bluetooth pane and reconnect your wireless keyboard. You should always have a cheap wired keyboard as backup hardware.

My neighbour's Mac Book Pro shows up as discoverable in my Bluetooth list on my iPad Air. How can I block her Bluetooth device? How can I prevent her pairing with my device? I need Bluetooth to stream music on my Bose system. Thanks!
If your device is discoverable, the other BT device would try (I am not sure if that would be successful). If it was, it would appear in your system preferences>Bluetooth.
Take a look at this re: security:

This is from another Apple article:
Use Bluetooth
You can wirelessly transfer files between computers—even Mac to PC—using the Bluetooth File Exchange utility. You can even browse selected devices and retrieve files remotely. For extra security, you can stipulate that only trusted devices be allowed to connect to your Mac, and 128-bit over-the-air encryption is also available

P.S. Since I have not had the issue, I have not researched this before. Thank you for making me look into BT security

When we "ON" AirDrop, the bluetooth is automatically switch "ON", but when we turnoff AirDrop, the bluetooth is not turned off.

I've formatted the computer, reinstalled the OS and checked the drive for errors and I've found nothing so far.
Would be very grateful for any thoughts/tips on what to do here...

Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
I upgraded to Yosemite after having not updated my software since purchasing my iMac about 5 years ago. (I know, bad...) I have an external hard drive that has 20,000 pics on it and I need to know if I should leave it plugged in during the update. I'm afraid if I do, something will happen to my pics. But at the same time, I'm wondering if I unplug it, will the new iPhoto recognize the "old" software and be able to open up the pics on my external hard drive? I know this can be a problem because I tried opening my EHD on my neighbors computer and our iPhoto versions were different and it wouldn't open on hers. Thank you in advance for you help!
When I go to the EHD and try to open it that way, it says the iPhoto library must be updated. Should I just let it update that as well? People have told me to copy my pics to the EHD and store in a safe place, but will I have to get it out and update it everytime I do an update so that the software will be compatible?
Before you let iPhoto update the iPhoto library make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library. Updating a large library can take a long time, and if something should interrupt this update, the library may be left in a inconsistent state. It is much safer to have a backup you can revert to, just in case.
But at the same time, I'm wondering if I unplug it, will the new iPhoto recognize the "old" software and be able to open up the pics on my external hard drive?
Are the "Pics" on your external drive your iPhoto Library? Or simply folders with image files?
If your iPhoto library is on that drive, what is the filesystem of this external drive? -
Need Bluetooth Peripheral Device Driver
Dell PC O/S Vista. BlackBerry 8830 World Edition. Local service provider is Cellcom
Just updated my software: PC to BB Desktop v4.5.0.16 & BB Handheld v4.5.0.138. Upon reboot of PC I get a message 'Found New Hardware' with three options; 1) 'Windows needs to install driver software for your Bluetooth Peripheral Device'. or 2) 'Ask me again later' or 3) 'Don't show this message again for this device'. I choose 1) 'Locate and install drive software'. PC tries but cannot locate driver. Next window, 1) Insert disc or 2) I don't have the disc. I choose 2) 'I don't have the disc'. Next window, 1) 'Check for a solution' or 2) 'Browse my computer for driver software'. I've tried both with no success and receive a message the 'Windows was unable to install your Bluetooth Peripheral Device'.
Any help from this forum would be appreciated.Actually this is how I fixed this issue (thanks to Ghostie3599).
PREAMBLE: Bear in mind this is a Research In Motion issue, and not a Microsoft issue. The Blackberry software should have the appropriate .INF files that allow Windows to install the correct device drivers for all detected Bluetooth Peripherals.
Go to the Control Panel and choose the Device Manager applet
You should see two items called Bluetooth Peripheral Device being listed with an yellow icon, meaning that they can't be"used" due to missing drivers.
Right click the first Bluetooth Peripheral Device and choose Update Driver Software...
When asked how do you want to search for the driver software, select the second option Browse My Computer for driver software
When asked for what kind of hardware this is, select the option Ports (COM & LPT) and click Next
At the Update Driver Software Dialog, click on the bottom option that is preceeded by a green arrow Let me pick from a list of device drivers from my computer
In the next dialog, make sure the option Show compatible hardware is NOT SELECTED
From the list of Manufacturers at the left, select RIM Virtual Serial Ports
The list of Models at the right will drill down to RIM Virtual Serial Port.Select this model and click Next.
You should get a confirmation that the driver was successfuly installed.
In my case, following these steps gave Windows vista the hint that the other Bluetooth Peripheral Device would work with the same driver. So after doing these steps for the first Bluetooth Peripheral Device, I got both devices working OK. However, if you still have the second Bluetooth Peripheral Device being listed with the yellow icon (i.e.: missing drivers), try repeating these steps to see if it works. If it doesn't, then the Bluetooth Peripheral Device might be something else (i.e.: not a virtual COM port).
Hope this helps!

Yosemite problems with bluetooth
I have my MacBook Pro and i upgrade it from 10.8 to (Mountain Lion) to 10.10 (Yosemite) and I´m having problems to connect devices to its bluetooth: a Sony phone and Snow Leopard Mac. My bluetooth will not recognize any device or show it "not connected".
To solve the problem I looked after the LMP version (0x6), I tried to reset the SMC and the PRAM but it didn't solve my problem.
hope i was clear in my description, thanks.I have same issue once I loaded Yosemite. The worst part is that The Apple store sells the Bose Mini..... I love my Bose Mini and I fear I will never be able to use it again.
Apple Product Manager should be fired for this travesty. The quality control around this product launch is suspect....Blue Tooth is one of the major tools most people are using these days....get with the program Apple!!!!! -
OS X yosemite glitches NEED HELP
Once I've up graded to OS X Yosemite Ive noticed multiple problems:
I can only start my computer in SAFE MODE (computer does not work normally)
When the loading screen comes up it FREEZES (everything freezes)
when logging in (freezes)
after typing my password the loading bar doesnt even load all the way and it freezes
when on safe mode half my screen is blinking
also no sound
I've restarted my computer countless times, same thing over and over I cannot use my computer. anyone know what I should do? this is tiring
not sure if im the only one with this problem but hope someone can help1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Is there any ocasional Cache cleaning with Yosemite ever needed?
Just curious if there is ever any need or benefit to do any type of Cache cleaning with Yosemite? Thanks, Bill
How to maintain a Mac
1. Make two or more backups of all your files, keeping at least one off site at all times in case of disaster. One backup is not enough to be safe. Don’t back up your backups; all should be made directly from the original data. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
2. Keep your software up to date. In the App Store or Software Update preference pane (depending on the OS version), you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis.
Keeping up to date is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Don't install such modifications unless they're absolutely necessary. Remove them when they are no longer needed. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all system modifications that you use are compatible. Incompatibility with third-party software is by far the most common cause of difficulties with system updates.
3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, such stuff is useless or worse than useless. Above all, avoid any software that purports to change the look and feel of the user interface.
It's not much of an exaggeration to say that the whole "utility" software industry for the Mac is a fraud on consumers. The most extreme examples are the "CleanMyMac," "TuneUpMyMac," and “MacKeeper” scams, but there are many others.
As a rule, you should avoid software that changes the way other software works. Plugins for Photoshop and similar programs are an obvious exception to this rule. Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction. Some are malicious. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery.
Only install software that is useful to you, not (as you imagine) to the computer. For example, a word processor is useful for writing. A video editor is useful for making movies. A game is useful for fun. But a "cache cleaner" isn't useful for anything. Cleaning caches is not an end in itself.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve. Do not rely on "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
4. Don't install bad, conflicting, or unnecessary fonts. Whenever you install new fonts, use the validation feature of the built-in Font Book application to make sure the fonts aren't defective and don't conflict with each other or with others that you already have. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. Deactivate or remove fonts that you don't really need to speed up application launching.
5. Avoid malware. Malware is malicious software that circulates on the Internet. This kind of attack on OS X was once so rare that it was hardly a concern, but malware is now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against malware, but you can’t rely on it—the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness—not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must come directly from the developer's website. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from the web, without your having requested it, should go straight into the Trash. A web page that tells you that your computer has a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with it, is a scam.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.
6. Don't fill up your disk/SSD. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a startup failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem.
While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage use and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move seldom-used large files to secondary storage.
7. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
To use a Mac effectively, you have to free yourself from the Windows mindset that every computer needs regular downtime maintenance such as "defragging" and "registry cleaning." Those concepts do not apply to the Mac platform.
A well-designed computing device is not something you should have to think about much. It should be an almost transparent medium through which you communicate, work, and play. If you want a machine that needs a lot of attention, use a PC.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it. -
Help needed: Bluetooth App problem
Hi all,
I am trying to create a bluetooth app using j2me, but i am stuck and i need some help. The bluetooth app i am trying to create is a simple 2d tic-tac-toe game, which uses bluetooth to pass messages between devices in order to play the game. I can send these message in the MIDlet class, but i can't use these methods to send message from the canvas class which is used to create the tic-tac-toe user interface. I have the code available on request if anyone would like a look.
Any help would be great, thanks the help in advance.I can send these message
in the MIDlet class, but i can't use these methods to
send message from the canvas class which is used to
create the tic-tac-toe user interface. And WHY can't you do that? If you want help, you'll have to give us some more information... -
Yosemite/Safari/iTunes/Bluetooth
In the middle of using my computer, while on Safari, listening to iTunes, a song will stop and a super loud white noise at volume 11 takes over and won't stop unless I push pause, close my MacBook and/or shut off the power to my bluetooth speaker. This never happened prior to Yosemite. Please help me stop this. The noise is insanely alarming and scares **** out of me and my cats because it happens for no discernible reason or cause (except when switch from one web page to another).
Thank you.SMC and PVRAM resets do not change the issue with Bluetooth and Yosemite view this threadSudden loud static noise on bluetooth headset and you'll find many of us have exactly same problem that hasn't changed loud outbursts and dropped connection as well as mouse and keyboard losing connectivity only this trick helped me but not a fix for outburstsThe standard setting prevents conflict with other Bluetooth devices. If you'd like better audio though, you can change the settings with this terminal command:
defaults write com.apple.BluetoothAudioAgent "Apple Bitpool Min (editable)" -int 40
This command works in other versions of OS X, but the Bluetooth Audio problems seem worse in Yosemite than previous versions. The number 40 is the sound quality setting. Note: a higher number could cause compatibility problems with other Bluetooth devices, so start at 40 and work your way up. -
Need bluetooth headset that is compatible with the iPhone and a blackberry
Alright I have a blackberry curve right now because Ive been waiting for 2.0 to come out.
Now that its here, I need a little bit more time to to gather up the funds to get the phone, but I need to get a bluetooth now for work.
I'd like get a bluetooth now that I can use on my blackberry temporarily and then use it on my iPhone instead of having to fork over money twice.
Now I really want to get the dock for the iphone and I think I have seen pictures of a dock for a phone AND bluetooth?
Am I correct that this exsists?
I've seen the apple bluetooths and they dont have a ring that goes around your ear like most and I'm worried that just sticking it in my ear is not solid enough.
Normal music earphone buds dont seem to fit comfortablly in my ear, so I'd rather having something hanging from my ear as opposed to stuffed in it.
So is there a bluetooth headset with an ear ring that will plug into an apple phone dock for charging?PsychedelicWonders wrote:
Can you buy a universal hook to clip on the apple earbud?
Yes. I have heard good things about this product:

I mean is there any rumor about them coming out with a new apple dock for 2.0?
Not that we've heard, though I'd imagine that one will be coming eventually.
If they are, and there is a universal hook that will clip on their ear piece, I would prefer to stick with the apple gear.
Apple doesn't make one to my knowledge -
Need Bluetooth for a Software Download Tryout?
I was trying to download Adobe Photo Elements 30-day tryout and after clicking--
"Adobe Photoshop Elements.pkg.sit" the error message is: "No Bluetooth Hardware Found"
This is the 2nd time I have tried to download software & the only default application is "Bluetooth"
1. how do I disable this (even though I do NOT have Bluetooth) or change application preferences?..Hey iBod--
I do have StuffIt expander 10.0 installed. (btw--Thanx for the StuffIT acronym--I kid u not, it was an ah-hah! moment for newbie me)
Anyways, an error message came up #17537: couldn't open Adobe Photoshop Elements.pkg. And any other attempts to open this sit file w/o dragging it into StuffIt brings up the Bluetooth Does Not Exist message.
(My disk utility says my HD is o.k. & I do have enough memory.)
Grr. After all this drama, I'm just ready to A) go & buy the Photoshop DVD software w/o trial B) get a USB Bluetooth D-Link (though I still don't know why Adobe insists I need this to open this file) or C) buy the StuffIt DELUXE 10.0. Either way, I'm out $40-$80 (not LOL)
Oh wells, thanx for your reply & trying to help I appreciate it. -
File sharing between Macbook and iPhone 5s? AirDrop or bluetooth
Just purchased my first Macbook ever! I'm catching on quickly however I've run into a snag with file sharing between my other Apple devices.
How can I pair and send files between my MBA and iPhone 5s?
I've made the change in system preferences to allow file sharing, yet still pops up on my iPhone that my MBA doesn't support this.
Also I've enabled Airdrop on both devices yet I can't seem to get that to work as well. Any help or advice would be appreciated. I would love to be able to easily send pictures or documents from my MBA to my iPhone 5s via Airdrop and vice versa.
Thanks in advanceRegarding AirDrop, note the quotation below from: iOS: Use AirDrop to wirelessly share content
You can't use AirDrop on iOS to share with OS X users, and OS X users can't use AirDrop to share with iOS devices.
The iPhone has limited bluetooth profiles and the only supportde connection between an iPhone and a computer is for tethering (sharing the iPhones cellular data connection). iOS: Supported Bluetooth profiles
