Is your 3GS sluggish and jerky on 4.2.1?

How's your phone performance on 4.2.1? When I open apps or folders, the screen doesn't open smoothly. It's jerky and stutters. Sometimes games pause for a tenth of a second or so. It's not silky smooth like it was on 3.1.3. I was hoping the 4.2.1 upgrade would fix this, but it doesn't.
Is your 3GS silky smooth on 4.2.1, or does it stutter and pause?

I suspect a glitch in your OS. Every 3GS I've updated runs smoother & snapier. My suggestion would be to restore your phone as a "new" device in iTunes(not from backup), followed by syncing your content back to your phone. You will lose all saved data on your phone. Doing this will rule out any problems with the OS. If you decide to give this a go, first find & delete all the .ipsw files on your computer. There should only be one, but delete all that you find. You will have to turn show all hidden files & folders on to see them. The .ipsw is located here:
OS X: ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates
XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
7 & Vista: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
This will force iTunes to re-download a new copy of the OS.

  • Sluggish and Jerky scrolling on Macbook Pro (Retina)

    The Problem
Over the past few months or perhaps longer, I have noticed poor performance with scrolling and responsiveness of my Mac when browsing the web and performing normal functions. It was often sluggish or jerky.  At its worst, it was like watching a slide show when scrolling. The problem mostly represented itself when using web browsers, and worst of all in Google Chrome.  No application was completely immune, but some performed better than others.  Sounds like a Software issue right ?  I had attempted small and drastic things to try to solve the issue.   After I completely re-formatted and re-installed Mavericks on my Mac, and the problem persisted. Ugh... Contacted support, and they ran me through the usual PRAM reset and reboot stuff, but no real solution was found.
I finally found an obsecure document that suggested that it may actually be a hardware issue.
I determined that the issue was not due to poor performance of the OS, Software or general CPU/MEM utilization as I had been assuming for months.  After some extensive troubleshooting I determined that the Trackpad was in fact the issue.   Through recording Trackpad coordinates and troubleshooting the scrolling process, it was apparent that "when scrolling" the Trackpad was sending "sluggish/jerky" data to the OS.
    The Fix
After I found this, It was simple to find a lesser-known fix for the Mac which consists of Resetting the SMC.  The SMC is the controller for the Low-Level hardware (Trackpad included).  It is the general interface between much of the hardware in your Operating System.  How it was "corrupted" or made to perform badly is anyone's guess.
I ended up resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) which made a drastic difference for the better.
    Process for resetting the SMC:
For the MacBook Pro Retina Laptop (Non-removeable Battery)
Shutdown your Mac, ensuring that you Power it off completely.
Connect the Power Cord if not already connected.
On the Built-in Keyboard (Left Side) Press the Following Sequence:CONTROL-SHIFT-OPTION   once pressed, Press and Hold the POWER button (Hold for several seconds)
Release the keys at the same time.
Repeat (if you want,  I did)
Then Press the Power Button to restart the computer.
Hopefully Enjoy smooth scrolling and TrackPad movement.
To reset the SMC on other Mac Models,  Refer to the Apple Support Doc: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
    It Works Mostly
I still find that on occasion the issue re-surfaces for a short time, and is generally assiciated with high utilization of CPU.  But in all,  it's like having my brand new Mac back.
NOTE:  Please be sure that you troubleshoot and determine that this is the most likely issue.  Resetting the SMC is a LOW-RISK process, but Apple recommends that you only do it if absolutely necessary.
I Hope this helps someone else out.   After the countless hours of troubleshooting I have done on this, and in finding the ultimate solution,  I felt compelled to write it up on the forums for others to find.   Enjoy.

PRAM contains settings for a number of things. Resetting it cannot hurt and "might" fix the problem. As I indicated, if that does not help, take it in for service.

  • My trackpad is sluggish and jerky

I have a MacBook Pro (Summer 2010) with a dual-core 2.4Ghz processor. I am relatively new to Apple MacBooks (having been a Windows user for a number of years).
The transition from Windows to Apple is not that smooth or easy, I'd have to say!
What I am currently finding difficulty with is the trackpad. The experience is just not anywhere near as good as the most modest current Windows laptop.
    What! I hear you say?
My experience is that the trackpad is sometimes sluggish, sometimes jerky, the cursor sometimes sticks momentarily.
This affects my experience of Lion - so that, for instance, scrolling down through a document, I find that the scrolling motion stops, a dialogue box opens asking me what to do with the current page (reload, etc - five or so options). The vertical scrollbar at the right of the screen appears, and I decide at this point to scroll down the document using the scroll bar (which I am sure is not what is intended for the Lion experience).
I run Windows 7 on Bootcamp - and the experience on Windows 7 is again sluggish, jerky, sometimes intermittent.
I am wondering if the trackpad is faulty, or if I need to reset it in some way.
The experience is as if the trackpad (or even the cursor) was had been smeared with (digital) jam (which it hasn't!).
Can anyone help? Or am I barking at the moon?

Hi there.  This problem is talked about in at least four discussions on the apple support site, and none of them have a clear "silver bullet" answer.
However, my own experience with this problem (in my case, I'm lucky, it comes up more rarely) ... plus some of the responses, points to one thing at least:
The "jerky, sluggish trackpad" problem sometimes happens when the computer or its network activity is at a high pitch.   Whether it just bogs down the CPU, or if instead it's creating some extra wifi interference or something (ok, that one does sound doubtful) who knows.  But it's good to look at what kind of heavy network or CPU process might be going on during that "sluggish trackpad" time.
In my case, what triggered the jerky-trackpad symptom was when I had my Picasa application do a big sync which involved uploading 500 photos to google's servers. When that process ended, the trackpad was smooth as can be.
And what could it be in your case?  One person with the problem said that they just got their computer. That brings to mind the fact that when your computer is newly installed, it needs to do a big indexing of your hard drive for the "spotlight" search tool in the far upper right of your Finder screen.   When it's indexing, a moving dot appears in the middle of the magnifying-glass icon.   OR... any other big process.  Consider quitting all apps other than the finder... stopping a big download or upload or bit torrent (heavens no!) process.... thinking about oddball apps you have installed... etc.
Anyway, this is just one possibility for the trackpad problem... one that proved relevant in my case.

  • Does OS3.1 make your 3GS drag and seem sticky?

Since I downloaded os3.1 to my iPhone 3GS y'day it seems to nearly hang and be very 'sticky' doing anything including SMS typing, entering password, opening at all, etc etc etc etc. Is this s'pose do to be a fix/upgrade or a downgrade? Is anyone else experiencing this new 'speed' of the os3.1 on 3GS?
VERY VERY VERY FRUSTRATED WITH APPLE's SO CALLED fixes and upgrades lately; they are now too much like Microsoft - ship a clunker and then try to fix it. Too bad, Apple WAS a good product, but starting to question it.

I have two 3GS's on 3.1 and have no issue...
Have you tried a hard reset or full restore using "restore as new iPhone" yet??? Those two steps will typically solve most issues like this

  • I restored my 3gs iphone and now it shows only black screen with apple mark... dont know what to do?

I would suggest you try to update your iOS 8.0.2 to the latest iOS 8.1.0 with iTunes on your computer. Don't try to do the update on your iPhone, it takes time and some error always occur. After updating to iOS 8.1.0, if your iPhone can't restart properly, try Wondershare Dr.Fone for iOS trial version. It will say that your iPhone is not in normal mode, offering you the option 'restart the device'. Just click the button to let your iPhone restart.

  • IPhone 3gs reception and connection problems, HELP!

My iPhone 3GS is having mutiple issues, including battery life, making and receving calls, making and recieving texts, and connecting to the internet. Lots of calls that people try to make to me never show up, and ones that do drop. It takes a few trys to get my calls to go out. Texts are the same way. Internet is sluggish and has trouble loading things without WIFI. My phone also has an overall sluggish-ness.

I tried again to restore last night. But now, restore wont complete. An error comes up after the firmware download to the phone. Now the phone is in recovery mode?
I went this morning to the Apple store - no appointment, silly of me :\. they they didn't have any open appointments today, so I made one for WED Morning, untill then, I will pull the sim card and put it into my trust old Blackberry curve

iOS 6 can be loaded without problem on the 3GS.  Not all features are supported however.
With respect to your reading people are having trouble, what did you expect to see on this technical support forum?  People don't write in to state they have a trouble-free upgrade.

  • IOS 5.0 / 5.0.1 Playlist issue on 3GS/iP4 and i4S

I have a few iOS devices as noted above this issue is experienced on all of them
Post upgrade to iOS 5 the new "Split" ipod.app (music and videos) has performance issues with large playlists.
Performance issue arent the biggest issue, however large playlists can render the Music app unusable
If a playlist is large enough it will be extemely slow loading it the first time its used, after that. Closing the music app with a large playlist loaded renders the Music.app unusable without reconnection to a computer and iTunes.
When a large platlist is loaded and the Music app is loaded for the first time (either closed via the Multitasking bar or fresh after a reboot) the app attempts to load the playlist, after a short period, iOS 5 belives the app has crashed (as its busy loading) times the app out and force closes it.. further attempts at loading the app have the same result.
Making your playlist smaller fixes the issue, However it is not present on 4.3.3.
This appears to be a bug/performance issue on iOS 5, I attempted to submit a support request but all I get is the "Express Lane" support options.
Im Posting this here to help anyone else that might be expereincing the same issue.
To restore functionality of your music app without a restore (I read somewhere that someone was doing that with their 3Gs)
    On your PC/Mac
    Open iTunes
Select any large playlists (1000+) that are synced with your idevice (typically smart playlists) and limit or split them into smaller lists.
If this is not possible, uncheck these playlists in the Music tab of your iDevice in the sync properties.
    Sync the device.
The music app should now load and allow you to play at least something untill iOS 5.0.2 comes out (assuming Apple are aware of the bug)
##Note attempts to force another playlist via another app or via Siri will fail, the device will simply not play music, IE in the case of Siri, Siri will answer "Okay playing your playlist Purchased" and then nothing will happen
Im testing on my Ipad2 and another 3GS i have on 4.3.3 to tripple check this doesnt happen on 4.3.3, but i havent changed my playlists since the upgrade.. soo yeah

  • New iMac wakes from sleep sluggishly and requires password despite preference setting

My new iMac (Core i7) wakes from sleep very sluggishly and it requires a password despite the fact that I have de-selected this option in Preferences.
I have a new iMac.  I used Migration Assistant to move everything from my older Mac Pro, which was running Lion.  Under the Secucrity settings in Preferences, I de-selected "Require Password."
I use a bluetooth mouse and wireless keyboard.  Typically I click the mouse to wake up my Mac.  The screen comes to life and the cursor moves with the mouse, but...how can I explain this?  When I move the mouse in this situation, the cursor paints a gray swath over the desktop screen.  It looks like I am using a paint program.
After clicking the mouse repeatedly the computer becomes responsive and the password entry screen appears--most of the time.  I have tried to set it up so a password is not required, but usually I get this screen.  SOMETIMES, it behaves correctly--say one-fourth of the time.
Another problem...  When I shut the iMac off and then back on, it does not always link to my Apple bluetooth mouse.  I have to connect a USB mouse and re-link the wireless mouse.
I wonder if this is a software/OS issue.  My old Mac Pro had similar wake-up issues, and I wonder if Migration Assistant transferred them to my new machine.
Your thoughts and great ideas are appreciated.

I too am having trouble with my bluetooth mouse after upgrading to 10.7.2 and the associated iOS 5 upgrades.  The mouse keeps losing its connection.  I've turned bluetooth off, trashed the preferences, rebooted and repaired both the keyboard and mouse but the mouse keeping dropping out.  Keyboard seems ok.  Anyone have any ideas?

i updated my iphone 3gs today and as it finished rebooting it said the sim card was not supported, and im my phone it still says connect to itunes, how do i fix this

If your iphone has been unofficially unlokced then it will indeed be locked when updated.  Is this the case?

  • 3gs unlocked and jailbroke. everything works except data roaming, how can i fix this? in us

I have a 3gs unlocked and jailbroke on tmobiles network. everything works except data roaming, pdp athentication failure, how can I fix this?

Jailbreak voids your warranty.  It tends to brick your device, and you surrender any help from Apple or this forum.
You need to find your own path through this.

  • Premiere Pro CC(V.8.0) sluggish and crashes during Playback

    Issue:
Premiere Pro CC(V.8.0) extremely sluggish and crashes during Playback. My video won't play at all unless I render (which is no problem). I render all my clips and attempt to play it back. It usually will allow me to watch it the first time around. After that, the program freezes up or becomes extremely sluggish. I have even had a blank green screen pop up on my playback monitor. Sometimes the program will generate the message "A Serious Error has occurred" and will shut down. Other times, the program just locks up. I am not running any other programs except email.
    Here is what I've tried:
    Cleared all my cache files
Set my Mercury Playback set to "Software only"
Restarted the program and computer after doing the above.
Made sure I had no RGB Curves as an effect (as I did see that was an issue from other threads)
    Deleted all unused footage
Deleted all render files and re-rendered everything.
I am editing footage that requires Ultra Key. I am using a Three-Way Color Corrector. My video isn't even 1 minute long, so I would think it would be easy to render and playback.
Here is what I am working on (I know I need an upgrade - was hoping to after I finished this client's project):

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
