Is your portal layout really cool?

Hi,
I am preparing a portal presentation and I would like to include some really cool examples of layout.
If you thing that your portal is cool, you can send me a screenshot with your portal welcome page. (please see my email in my profile)
If there are issues in showing company logos etc, please note and I will anonymize it.
As a "thank you bonus for your help", I will put all screenshots in a powerpoint and send it to back to all contributors who emailed me.
During my projects, I have seen some very impressive and some very unusual attempts in layout. I think this can be very interesting.
Please, do not misunderstand me. I don"t want to solicite portal graphics, I am curious about pushing the limits of portal design.
Thanks
hs

Hi Holger,
I appreciate your attempt to collect cool portal layouts or themes.
Unfortunately I have no customized layout at hand.
Maybe the idea is worth a blog or a wiki page here at sdn. I thought very often about some kind of "portal theme contest".
Any more supporters here at sdn? Any comments from SAP?
Greetings,
Carsten
P.S: I'm very very interested in your resulting ppt. Maybe I will try to create a new portal layout just for you!

  • Portal layout

    Hi,
    We are planning to use weblogic portal 8.1 beta version.
    We have various user groups exist in our system (physician ,caregiver....).
    We want to have different home page layout for these groups .
    For example for physician, the home page may be of 2 column layout and for caregiver
    it may be of 3 column layout.
    In portal 4.0 there was a concept called "group portal" and we can assign different
    page layout for these group portal.
    Can we have something similar to that in 8.1b version.
    I know a new concept introduced in portal 8.1b version called "role".
    Do I need to create various role to fullfill my objective?
    Do I need to create different user segments for that ??
    Thanks,
    Anju

    The documentation for the basic info on how to create a layout using regions is at
    http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_15/portal.1014/b13809/lookfeel.htm
    Most of the pages I have created are the typical two-column layout in the middle (left column being the "narrow" column, right column being a specified no. of pixels or a percentage width) with a "header" region above and a "footer" region below, both of which cover the width of the regions in the two-column area. Each of those areas may also have multiple regions within it depending on what content will be published there and how you want that content display (ex. one portlet region with all display options and one portlet region without display options, and one item region.) Warning: the whole creating regions thing may drive you nuts trying to get them to do what you want them to do. :-) Play around on a few test pages to get the feel of creating and editing regions - adding portlets and items to the regions to see how they will look. Once you have figured out your page layout and how you want all your regions setup, I recommend creating that layout in a Portal Template -- under Navigator > Page Groups > Shared Objects > Portal Templates -- that can be applied to any pages in any page group that needs that layout.
    To get the beginnings of a 2-column layout page with a header and footer region: Create two regions below the initial region that is on a page. In the middle region, create a region to the right. Edit each region to define its region type (portlets, items, or sub-page links), size, and other attributes.

  • Portal is blank after modifying com.sap.portal.layouts.framework

    Hi Experts,
    Using SAP EP 7.0 SPS 18 and NWDS 7.0.18
    I downloaded the par file com.sap.portal.layouts.framework because I wanted to increase the width of the detailed navigation panel. I imported it into NWDS and in the WAandNavPanel.jsp I modified this line
    <hbj:page title="Portal Page">
         <hbj:gridLayout   id="GridLayout1"  width="100%" cellSpacing="2">
         <hbj:gridLayoutCell rowIndex="1" columnIndex="1" width="20%" verticalAlignment="top">
              <lyt:container id="navPanelContainer" />
         </hbj:gridLayoutCell>
         <hbj:gridLayoutCell rowIndex="1" columnIndex="2" width="80%" verticalAlignment="top">
              <lyt:container id="workAreaContainer" />
         </hbj:gridLayoutCell>
         </hbj:gridLayout>
    </hbj:page>
    To this:
    <hbj:page title="Portal Page">
         <hbj:gridLayout   id="GridLayout1"  width="100%" cellSpacing="2">
         <hbj:gridLayoutCell rowIndex="1" columnIndex="1" width="25%" verticalAlignment="top">
              <lyt:container id="navPanelContainer" />
         </hbj:gridLayoutCell>
         <hbj:gridLayoutCell rowIndex="1" columnIndex="2" width="75%" verticalAlignment="top">
              <lyt:container id="workAreaContainer" />
         </hbj:gridLayoutCell>
         </hbj:gridLayout>
    </hbj:page>
    I then selected 'Quick PAR Upload' from NWDS and selected 'Include the source code of the portal application' and 'Deploy PAR' checkboxes and then deployed.
    Now when I login to the portal, its just a blank screen. What did I do wrong, and how can I fix this please?
    Regards,
    Marshall.

    Hi Marshall,
    Just a couple of notes for you:
    Changing the SAP namespace to your own/client namespace is a good idea, though you'll need to copy all referenced Portal objects if possible.  In addition, every support pack or patch will require you to recreate this PAR file using the original SAP source as the underlying code may have changed.
    All that said, the easiest way to check out a change is to make a change directly to the PAR file and upload.  I do this when working with a local Portal install (not the development one).
    Another point, make sure when you upload it via System Admin/Support/Runtime Tools/Administration Console (or something like that); that you get a valid version number when you upload.  If you don't, that indicates something is wrong with the PAR file.
    Maybe a test for you would be to take the existing PAR file, and upload it again without modification to see if there's a problem; then do it again, but this time just adding some space or something to the file (no code changes).  Keep baby stepping till you work out what code is making the screen go blank for you.
    Regards,
    Matt
    ps. I hope you've solved this by now...Otherwise ask your friendly SAP expert (who may be handy) how to do it.  Alternatively, publish exactly the change you're making and we can review it.

  • Error: Custom portal layout

    i designed a portal layout for my ... portals, tested on my machine and everything was allright but after that I deployed the app on other domain(different computer, different SO, same WLP version) and I discovered an issue when trying to create pages with my layout, cause I couldn't see the controls to handle the content on a placeholder, hen I editedt the layout(just the html.txt) to show one more placeholder, deployed once and for my surprise I could see the controls on the new placeholder but I couldn't on the other one...and I really really do not understand what is happening... any ideas

    no it is not the problem, i added that last column just for testing purposes, i thought it was not going to be shown properly but it did, in fact everything is ok in my computer but at the other domain i'm having problems witth one column and i do not understand why cause the last column is jus a copy. of it... maybe the problem is with the placeholder...

  • Your portal's performance

    I was hoping to get an idea from other customers what was the performance of your portals. I know this is an inexact question, so I fully anticipate inexact answers as well. I was looking at ways to speed up performance and was wondering what response times i should be targeting for "fast".
    My portal info:
    6.1 MP1
    mostly community pages / publisher
    mostly guest access
    ~20k pages / day (as of this week, most of which is a load balancer health check)
    response times are usually around 1-3 seconds
    home page response time is much faster (200-400ms) probably because it stays in cache
    often pages will take 5+ seconds if it has not been visited in a long time
    Portal contains a fair amount of UI customizations
    I was also wondering if anyone has moved to adaptive layouts yet and can comment on the change in performance that they see.

    A couple things I always go through when working on improving performance...
    1. To separate your portals performance vs the portlets performance, load a portal page with all the portlets minimised or removed. Take a look in the source of the page right at the end and you will see some stats there regarding the amount of time taken to build a page. Compare the difference between with all the portlets and without. That way you know where to focus your attention.
    2. Use http compression (gzip) on your web servers, this will help reduce the size of data transfers to a users browser.
    3. Use a tool like the YSlow plugin (firefox & firebug) to profile browser performance, this will check things like how many scripts/css/images are being downloaded. 9 times out of 10 I find this is where the real gains are made in performance of portals.
    Adaptive layouts are fantastic! It means you can get a designer/web developer to do the work, and if you are coding it yourself no more loooong development turn arounds. Just remember to cache them and you should not notice a difference.

    Hi everyone,
    I am having a problem with my Mac OS X 10.7.5 mac book air , there are constant pop pups and small windows with ads blinking constantly opening up on my safari in front of everything?? it is constantly interupting me and makes me mistakingly click on it then another new windows open behind the one im using..
    I am not too sure if thats a virus or trojan.. I always thought that macs didn't get virus? this looks like one to me… any experts around? please help me fix it with your instructions? really don't know what to do... thanks

    Those are not viruses. You have probably installed some malware:
    The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
    An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
    Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
              Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
              OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
              OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
              About file quarantine in OS X
    If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
    From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
         is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
         the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
         techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
        your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
        from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
        you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

    "If you exceed your iCloud storage limit, photos and videos won't upload to iCloud, and your library will no longer stay up to date across your devices."  Really?  Can't we support the existing "last 1k photos will be available in the cloud" model?  If we don't do this, won't this kill auto-sync of new photos from iOS devices to our libraries on our Macs (if the Mac's Photos app has auto syncing with the cloud turned on) once we go over our 5gb limit?  I have 350GB of photos in my Mac Photos library - I am not going to pay $20/month for 1tb iCloud storage.  Please advise, Apple.  Thank you.

    I agree and am baffled by this also.  At first I was really excite about this new feature.  Mostly because I would be able to seamlessly sync videos along with my PhotoStream.  I just assumed there would be some systematic way to handle large libraries.  Like removing older files as the current PhotoStream does.  However, it appears that this new feature will simply 'shut down' when you reach your storage limit.  This just makes no sense to me.  I would have to double check, but I have all my photos and videos in iPhoto and stored on a 3 TB external hard drive and I think the full library is over 1 TB.  So, even if I was willing to pay $20 a month for photo syncing (which I am not) I couldn't do it because my library is too large.  Again I am just baffled why Apple cannot blend this new service with the existing PhotoSteam model.  My favorite aspect of PhotoSteam is that is uploads all my iPad and iPhone Photos to my Mac for permanent storage and it seems this is lost in the new version.

  • Really cool Website Effect

    Hey all,
    I ran across
    this website yesterday.
    Was wondering if anyone had the foggiest idea as to where to start
    to achieve a card-flipping effect like this. I've seen some stuff
    on page turning in 'Flash Hacks' but I think this brings it to a
    whole other level.
    I'm thinking it might have to do with backface culling, or
    some sort of 3d rendering in actionscript, but the cards behave so
    realistically, that I think it could be a tween as well...
    Any ideas would be appreciated! If no ideas, just check it

    Pavan,
    You do u want to  edit com.sap.portal.layouts.framework.par  . this pars is only for layouts. If you want to change the width or create a new layout then u can use it.
    Deploy the par with different name than satandard name.

    I can't create a full .par from a copy of the com.sap.portal.layouts.framework  component because when I create the .par for upload it in the portal, this .par file just includes the portalapp.xml. • Did You Know You Can Change Your Inbox Layout?

    Verizon Message Center  uses  can now choose the layout of their inbox.
    It can be Classic Layout with a simple list of your emails. You just need to double click an email to read it in a full screen.
    Or it can be Preview Bottom layout with a list of your emails with a preview pane at the bottom. The preview pane size can also be adjusted to the size that works for you.

    Cool features. I stick with the classic. The first thing I do on any mail client is turn off the preview pane. I guess I am old school and was taught previewing a message was the same as opening them without asking. Not always safe. Especially if it is a new bug in the wild.
    But most software should stop stuff from executing without asking. Microsoft was burned by this many times. Now they even ask to download the pictures with outlook.

  • How does your portal's content management work?  Are you happy with it?

    It would be great if there was some sharing of how people have configured their content and document management through the portal, and how happy they are. I'm assuming almost everyone is on Publisher and Collab, but do you use them in a special way? Anything customized?
    I'm currently looking for ways to make our system more flexible and easier to create new content areas. Also, uploading documents is a huge pain.
    Html Content: Publisher
    Customizations:
    We include edit pencils at the top of each content item visible for people with edit access to the community.
    FCKeditor instead of default rich text editor, with image upload
    links to KD cards and community pages are transformed into adaptive tags on save
    Issues
    There is clear separation between what a 'content editor' and a 'community manager' is able to create. Any creation of new portlets or changing of anything falls on the community manager. Content editor feels very restricted as they only have control over what is inside the boxes, and can't create new 'pages'. This leads to stale content.
    Documents: Collaboration
    We use collab for documents because we want to be able to publish different versions of the same doc to the KD, without breaking any links that we have created to that existing document. We use snapshot queries sometimes to display documents, but more ofthen than not we just use a KD picker to display a single document, and this means we need to be able to update the card without breaking the link.
    Issues
    Training users to go to collab to upload documents is not easy, and then publishing is difficult as well. There is no multi-document publish. Publishing sometimes fails and times out, and the document can be deleted from collab and still exist in the KD. Also, custom properties that we add to cards in the KD seem to vanish, but hopefully upgrading to the latest versions will help.
    I'd like to investigate creating helper functions to make the job of uploading documents to the correct folder in collab easier. The tool would upload to the right folder, and then publish to the KD if necessary.

    Very good thread!
    We are using publisher for web content as well as documents.
    The documents are crawled into the KD using the publisher crawler, and we use a "link to document" custom button that build automatically the PT:Tag link to the KD card that represents the crawled document.
    So really all the links to documents stay valid only if the KD card are not deleted and recreated...(otherwise, the links are broken...and i did not find a better way to handle this better yet)
    We also use the "Edit/Create" buttons for all our publisher content in order to allow content editors easy access to the publisher content to edit/add.
    The main pain points we have is that the preview is not very useful...previewing only the content of your portlet does not give you a feel of what the complete portal page will look with your new content. If there was a way to view the portal page (with all the publisher portlets on it) in preview mode, THAT would be useful.
    And because of this, content managers are not very comfortable to create/edit the content in PROD directly (because they really want to see the end product of their editing process...i.e. the final portal page) and i don't blame them...
    Which leads to another huge pain point: When creating content in Staging for example, it is hard to push it to PROD when ready. And even if you use the import/export feature (which is not great either because you can only export folder instead of being able to pick and chose the content you want to export), you need to have someone (infrastructure person who have access to servers) move the publisher export zip file...which makes the whole process more cumbersome than it should be, really.
    Publisher should be multi-environment aware...What i mean is that it would be great if a single publisher instance would allow to push the content to different environments (i.e. STG first, and then when it looks good PROD) as the content mature towards production state. (products like Documentum -I know it is not the same planet compared to publisher but still...- do this flawlessly)
    Last the free text editor is not awesome and i don't like that when you add a link to another item or image, it automatically puts the absolute path in there...that makes it harder to migrate.
    I have not tried to replace the free text editor...What is your experience with FCKEditor??

  • Query - copy layout - really need this

    Hello,
    is there a way, a workaround, or what so ever to
    copy / download a Layout of a Query.
    (and then import it ... )
    I really need this so please explain me how I could do this!
    thx in advance!
    greetings
    Steven

    Micky,
    I already knew how to transport a query itself but my problem
    is that there are "layouts" designed (and assigned) to these query.
    so when i want to copy or transport a query, i also want to transport/copy the
    layouts that are created...
    example: Query Q has 2 layouts assigned to it (L1 and L2)
    so now, I want to copy Q > Q2 so that it also has those two layouts included
    so if you know a trick to copy a query (with the layouts inside - or a way to assign these layouts afterwards)
    please let me know!!
    thx already for your reaction
