ISA 2006 slow response, connections timeout, maximum limit reached?

Hey guys,
I've been having an issue with a client's ISA Server for the past couple of weeks and haven't been able to understand why this is happening.
They have a couple of ISA Servers Enterprise Edition in an array. This ISA Servers give Internet access to the entire company. They have significant amount of traffic through a Cisco Iron Port that all the users proxy settings are configured to this device
and the Iron Port forwards the requests to the ISA Servers.
This implementation have been working fine for months, until a few weeks back that started to have slow response problems from the ISA Servers.  Analyzing the reports from the ISA Servers, I've noticed an increased amount of traffic a few times this
has happened and mostly from the Iron Port. The Cisco people says this increase amount is due to the fact that the ISA Server stops responding and new requests are made at the moment from the device. We have configured the Iron port IP in the exceptions of
the Flood Mitigation Settings of the ISA Server, and configure it to take more than 20,000 connections.
Still after this configuration, the same problem raised a couple of days back. The ISA Servers stops responding and they need to be forced shut down and restarted to get them back to work.
There are also some errors from some other internal IPs that it reaches maximum connection limits, but these are about 10 errors like this only. I was thinking maybe there are some infected computers or something but they said that they scanned the ones
that show the errors and nothing is detected.
From the ISA reports of the time of the incident, I saw that it reached more than 15,000 concurrent connections. More than double of what it usually handles throughout the day.
I don't know if there is like a connection limit that the ISA can handle before it hangs of something?
Is there any ideas on what can be happening with this?
Thanks for any replies!
Eduardo Rojas

Hi,
Have you check the Event logs on the ISA Server? Any error?
You could use ISABPA to do some basic troubleshootings.

    Hi ,
My database is 10.02.0.4.0 on Solaris 5.9.
We are using Oracle 10g AS as Application server to

we have configured enough settings on datasource and connection pool parameters.
At Oracle Level 150 session, Processes 300 has set.
what could be the reason for End user getting problem like "Slow response","Connection Tiemd out".

  • Internet is working very slow through ISA 2006 Srever

    Hi,
We are using isa server 2006 for accessing internet service, but internet is working is very slow.
When we ping the public DNC its show the lot of delay time.
And in ISA alerts its display the following error messages:-
1."ISA Server is no longer experiencing a SYN attack".
    2. The request was denied because the number of connections per second allowed for the [System] Allow DNS from ISA Server to selected servers rule was exceeded.
I am new for ISA 2006. SO, Plz provide required solution if anybody face such type of problem.
    Thanks and regards ,
    Ravi Singh

    Hi,
Firstly, it is not recommended to configure a DNS Server on the External Interface of the ISA Server.
I suspect this issue may cause by some worm/virus infected computers from your internal network. Please run antivirus software on both ISA Server and internal clients.
Besides, I recommend you to check in task manager or performance monitor to see if there are Heavy disk load and resource consumption, high CPU load, high memory usage and high network bandwidth consumption issues.
You can also enable logging of traffic blocked by flood mitigation:
In the console tree of ISA Server Management, click General. In the details pane, click Configure Flood Mitigation Settings. On the Flood Mitigation tab, select Log traffic blocked by flood mitigation settings.

  • Outlook Exchange Directory Connection - Slow Response

    Hi All
We are in process of migrating from Exchange 2007 to 2013. Clients are Outlook 2013.
Users who are migrated to 2013 are experiencing outlook timeouts regularly throughout day (we do not run in cache mode).
I am noticing that Outlook Connection is reporting slow response times for Exchange Directory connection (screen shot shown below) i.e. 1000ms or above. All other connections are fine.
When outlook times out - I notice that connection to Exchange Directory is the one that times out also.
I suspect a GC / DC issue - perhaps Exchange is querying GCs outside of site? and that's causing timeout? WAN connections between sites are slow (1.5Mb or below).
But my AD team tells me there is nothing wrong with infrastructure. :-)
Could someone assist me in identifying the cause?
    Thanks in advance
    Anthony

    Hi Anthony,
Please use OWA to check whether the migration completed successfully.
I noticed that you are not under the Exchange Cached mode, please try to turn it to Exchange Cached mode to have a test.
Please try to run Outlook under safe mode to avoid some AVs and add-ins.
I also found an related blog, collect some information for your reference:
These default Keep-Alive intervals are NOTs home networking devices and/or aggressive network devices on the Internet. Some of those devices are dropping TCP connections after as little as 5 minutes (300 seconds)
of inactivity.  When one or both of the two default connections are dropped, the connection to the Exchange server is essentially broken and not useable.
To address this issue, we are recommending setting a registry key on the Exchange CAS to change the default Keep-Alive from 15 minutes (900 seconds) to 2 minutes (120 seconds):HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
    NT\RPC

  • Slow response when using Xcelsius web service connection witn input values

We've been very successful in using the Xcelsius Web Service Connection. We've recently moved forward toward using input values when calling a web service and having issues with response time. Without input values, it takes 3 - 6 seconds to retrieve and display the results in Xcelsius, but, when using the input values to the web service, it takes about 27 seconds for Xcelsius to retrieve and display the results.  Does anyone have experience with fixing slow response associated with using input values for a web service connection?

    Hi Sharone,
What's the version of your Xcelsius and BOBJ server?
I'm asking because using the last version of BOBJ server (BOXI 3.1 SP 3) you have new services on CMC just to help Xcelsius to work better with WebServices.

    Rodrigo.

  • Connectivity Error through ISA 2006 firewall

    Hi all,
i have problem connecting to my main database for syncronization, when i try to connect my clinet machine to the server over the internet directly to my main server it works but when i try to connect trough the firewall it gives me TNS:operation timed out... even though i have 1521 & 1526 ports are open on my ISa 2006..
please suggest do i need further listenr configuration...
    thanks in advance..

For 8i and a shared server architecture, such a configuration (init.ora) should work:
    local_listener="(address=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(host=hostname)(port=1521))"
    dispatchers="(address=(partial=true)(protocol=tcp) \
    (host=hostname)(port=5000))(dispatchers=1)"
    dispatchers="(address=(partial=true)(protocol=tcp) \
    (host=hostname)(port=5100))(dispatchers=1)"
    dispatchers="(address=(partial=true)(protocol=tcp) \
    (host=hostname)(port=5200))(dispatchers=1)"
Listener's port is set to 1521 as usual, dispatchers are set to fix ports 5000,5100,5200 (port numbers as an example). These number have to opened by the firewall administrator.

  • TNS Listener Connecting issue through ISA 2006

We have Oracle 8i installed on?a Win XP Professional workstation, and pretty much as it comes - we haven't?changed many config. parms.
We have a basic ISA 2006 firewall, and when the Oracle machine is not behind it we can contact it without ay problems. However, when we put the machine behind the firewall we can 'tnsping' it, but cannot contact it with SQL*Plus
I have 1521 Port Opened in my ISA 2006 Firewall
i set USE_SHARED_SOCKET = TRUE under Windows registry on Oracle Server, Firewall & on the Client.
My tnsnames.ora is somewhat like this...
    L.world =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    (COMMUNITY = oracle.world)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Host = 127.0.0.1)
    (Port = 1521)
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORCL)
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    M.world =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS =
    (COMMUNITY = oracle.world)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Host = 213.XXX.XXX.XXX)
    (Port = 1521)
    (ADDRESS =
    (COMMUNITY = oracle.world)
    (PROTOCOL = TCP)
    (Host = 213.XXX.XXX.XXX)
    (Port = 1526)
    (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = ORCL)
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
I've run a trace on SQL*Net and the problem seems to be as follows:
    1. The client contacts the server using its external IP address.
    2. Oracle responds with a packet which contains the?INTERNAL IP address of the machine. (i.e. the machines IP address on our local intranet)
    3. The client attempts to contact Oracle using the Oracle machine's internal intranet IP address.?Of course this fails because only the external address is valid outside the firewall.
    4. SQL*Plus responds TNS-12535: TNS:operation timed out???
    Can anyone suggest ....
    what to be done now

I just went through something similar. Have you tried the setting to make request appear to come from the ISA server rather than the original client in the configuration rule? I'm not sure how you examined the packet, so I can't say my situation was exactly the same, but it sounds very similar and that solved it for me.

  • Slow Response Sun ONE 6.1 SP3 Win 2003

My Sun ONE web server is processing my JSP pages very quickly when serving one session at a time. However when there are 4 or more active sessions, it slows right down. Response time goes from 2 seconds (1 active session) to 60 seconds (multiple active sessions) for a single JSP page. I've been running the performance monitor to see if I can notice anything, but nothing seems to stand out. I have tried manipulating the Keep Alive settings and the Performance settings within the Magnus Editor but there hasn't been a noticable improvement.
I've recently upgraded to SP4 to see if this solved my problem, but there was no imporvement.
This server is an HP DL380 with dual 2.8GHz Xeon processors & 2 Gigs of RAM. There is a lot of available disk space. I'm running Windows 2003 and it's up to date with all the latest patches.

The JSP's are simply Hello World JSP's (however I created these type of JSP's for testing and they do respond slowly as well when these are multiple sessions).
These JSP functioned fine on iPlanet 6.0 SP1 (JDK 1.2.2) without any slow response on Win2K and inferior hardware.

  • Tomcat 4.1:connection timeout error

Hi. I got a HTML form that allows a user to enter freehand SQL statements and send them to an DB2 database via a SQL Java servlet. After the query executes, it returns an Excel file containing the resultset of my query. Unfortunately, I got a query that when executed, my browser returns "The page could not be found..." due to connection timeout. With another query with different set of criteria, it runs fine-so my Tomcat is running fine. I've executed the same exact query in Excel via JDBC-ODBC bridge Java application and it ran fine and also executed the same query in QMF for Windows, and it ran fine also. So this lends me to believe I need to configure my Tomcat somehow, I presume the connection timeout limit.
Is there a way to remove or increase the connection timeout limit?
    Thanks in advance.

Arrrggg!!! That didn't work. Here's the error message:
"The page cannot be displayed There is a problem with the page you are trying to reach and it cannot be displayed.
    Please try the following:
Click the Refresh <javascript:location.reload()> button, or try again later.
Open the home page, and then look for links to the information you want.

Does this mean my company's firewall administrator has set a connection timeout limit? Or is it still my Tomcat's configuration?

  • OAS 10.1 3.1 0 OC4J JDBC Connection/Timeout settings

I am fairly new to OAS, and am trying to resolve a intermitent issue,
I have an OAS 10.1.3.1.0 with a deployed EAR file I was provided by a supplier containing mainly PL/SQL based logic, which configured the OAS to ask a middle tier for a an external to pass data to it via Stored Procedure and then usiing the deployed package connect to an external Oracle DB and insert the data.
Oas is running on a Windows 2003 platform that has no problems or connectivity problems, how ever intermittenlt the OAS stops uploading data to the external Oracle DB. Some custom external logging details this as a communication at the time it occurs, how ever there are no comms issues. A quick restart of the OAS windows service resolves the issue.
Apart from upgrading OAS to patch set 5, the only other thing I considered could be causing the issue is how OAS is handling the session timeout or connection pool.
I can see the following settings for the JDBC connection I am using, I wondered if anyone could advise anything that could be changed? I am not sure the implications on setting the validate connection to True and also not sure why maximum number of connections is set to -1?
    Connections
    Initial size of Connection Cache
    Minimum Number of Connections
    Maximum Number of Connections
    Connection Retry Interval (seconds)
    Maximum Connection Attempts

  • TCP Connect Timeout

Does anyone know of a way to increase the TCP connection timeout on Linux (RedHat ES 3.0, 2.4.21-9.0.3.ELsmp). We currently always keep a "dead" server in our imqAddressList for failover. The server has nothing listening on the portmapper port, 7676. When I telnet over regular Internet it takes less than a second to get a connection refused response:
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refusedWhen I telnet to this server over a low bandwidth satellite connection, I get a timeout after 3 minutes:
    [root@client# time telnet server 7676
    Trying X.X.X.X...
telnet: connect to address X.X.X.X: Connection timed out
    real    3m15.393s
    user    0m0.010s
sys     0m0.000sWe currently have 3 servers in our imqAddressList and imqReconnectAttempts is set to 0. However, since one of the 3 servers is dead, 1/3 of the time it takes over 3 minutes to get a connection. I'd imagine that the socket connection from IMQ is exhibiting the same behavior as telnet.
Is there anywhere that I can tweak this timeout?
    Thanks,
    Aaron

You need to call connect on a socket set to non-blocking mode with fcntl, and then use select with a timeout to limit the amount of time you will wait for the connect to complete. If select returns because you timed out, then close the socket and return an error. If select returns because of an event on the socket, you use getsockopt to determine if the connect succeeded or not.
See Stevens, Unix Network Programming Vol 1 for details. Comments in the code I'm looking at say page 411.
    Hope this helps.

Please let me know if any other data would be usefull.

    Hi,
I expect the error details in CF9\runtime\logs\coldfusion-out.log will like provide a clue as to problem.
For a more long term plan I think you should do what you can to migrate the ACCESS data to SQL or some other database.
    HTH, Carl.

  • Troubleshooting slow response to email via vpn

I've just adopted a vpn 3000 concentrator, and am totally learing this, so my apologies.
What could be reasons within a VPN enviroment that people are having slow response to email. (excluding issues with servers)
From a network perspective I can trouble shoot slow response, but how would a vpn enviroment be any more different to troubleshoot.
Naturally VPN is going to be much much slower, but taking 10 minutes for multiple users to get their email seems odd. LAN users get there email within seconds

    Hi:
I'll tell you, I used to have the exact same problem at my last company.
We had an Exchange server for email and everyone used Cisco's VPN client.
Email was so slow, it was ridiculous sometimes. Everything else was OK, though. Other applications were OK, and network management was also good. It was just Exchange.
I know that Exchange is notorious for being delay intolerant, but this was bad! and it seemed to get worse with time.
Anyway, I dont know if you have done any troubleshooting yet or not, but you would definitely want to focus on the MTU settings for the VPN connection. Remember that IPSec adds overhead that may cause the ethernet frame to exceed the network's allowable MTU, so the packets get fragmented and reassembled at the receiving end. This can be a very slow process. And some applications are not very tolerant of fragmentation, like SQL and, I think, Exchange, too.
The problem with client VPN is that you would have to adjust each user's PC MTU. With site-to-site VPN, you can, of course, set the maximum segment size of the entire tunnel, so all users sitting behind the tunnel will be forced to conform to the tunnel's stips.
But you can try doing that on a few PCs to see if anything changes. I changed the PCs MTU using freeware called DR. TCP/IP. You can download it for free and it will allow you to change the PCs MTU very easily -- just a few keystrokes, instead of having to go into the registry and get stupid with Windows.
Change the output segment size for the PC to, say, 1400, and see if that improves anything. You would also want to change it on the 3000. I forgot how to do it on the 3000.
    Victor
