ISDN BRI for Backup and remote Support

Hello,
is it possible to configure an ISDN BRI
to use them for Backup and if no Backup is up (primary connection works)i can use
the ISDN BRI for Dialin (Remote Administration)?
My Backup Solution works fine but i do not know, how i have to configure the ISDN BRI so, that acceppt my ISDN Call for Remote Administration.

You can configure 2 dialer interfaces one for dial in and another one for the dial out purpose.
make the 2nd dialer interface as a backup interface for your primary interface and define the floating routes accordingly..

Time Capsule stuck at Preparing for Backup, and internet TC latency issue

I have an iMac that backs up to my 1TB Time Capsule. I have had it since March. Suddenly it stopped backing up. It get's stuck at "preparing for backup" and never actually completes a backup.
I am also experiencing a HUGE latency issue with my internet connection. I am constantly having to use the 'refresh' page button in Safari.

Consider these factors regarding an extended period of "Preparing...". Consider each topic separately and do not attempt to act on all of them at once.
*Recent Crash or Other Major System Event* (Deep Traversal)
The reasons for this process are described in an article by George Schreyer. “During the preparation step it checks the FSEvents log for consistency. If it determines that something isn't quite right it has to rescan the whole disk. This can take quite awhile. A full rescan is always triggered by a crash, an unplanned shut down event or by booting from some other bootable disk between backups…. After a crash, Time Machine must scan the whole disk to determine what it has to do because it cannot trust the information that it left behind. Connected via an Ethernet connection, this phase would typically take 20 minutes on an older PowerBook. Being connected wirelessly stretches this phase out to over 3 hours.” [http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html]
According to the following KB article it can sometimes take a very long time if Time Machine begins this “deep traversal” and has to compare data inventories. This may apply to your situation, particularly if many Gigs of data are involved. (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1516)
*Anti-Virus Software*
Running anti-virus software can interfere with the backup process. Either disable it altogether, or try the suggestion outlined here, “If you use third-party anti-virus scanning software and have issues, make sure your Time Machine back up folder (Backups.backupdb on the Time Machine disk) is excluded from virus scanning.” (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1516)
*Software Updates* #
Installing new software, upgrading existing software, or updating Mac OS X system software can create major changes in the structure of your Macs directories. Time Machine will backup every file that has changed since the installation.
If you take a look at the Console logs Time Machine may be reporting that your backups need "deep traversal". That's fine. Time Machine knows what is wrong and how to fix it. If you have a great deal of data, it may take quite awhile.
After an OS update (like 10.5.5) Time Machine realizes the system no longer matches what it looked like during the previous backup. So it has determined that it's earlier catalogue of what-should-be-where is 'untrustable'. So it is going to go item-by-item comparing the before and after of your system. If you have just performed an OS Update then Time Machine knows what it's doing - let it do it!
*Spotlight Keeps Indexing Backup Drive* #
It may be that Time Machine can’t proceed or complete a backup due to a Spotlight indexing error. During this period, take a look at the Spotlight icon in the upper right corner of your screen. Is there a tiny dot pulsating in the center of the spyglass? Click on the icon. Is there a progress bar displayed? Generally Spotlight indexing is a good thing. But at time it may hang and never progress, preventing backups from taking place.
Go to System Prefs --> Spotlight --> Privacy Tab.
Drag your Time Machine disk into the window. It should now be among the items to exclude from indexing.
Now quit System Prefs.
Reopen System Prefs and remove ("-") the Time Machine disk from the window.
This should clear out Spotlights cache. Naturally, Spotlight should begin indexing again (maybe even for a few hours depending on how much data there is), but it should eventually stop.
*Reboot Time Capsule* #
Stop the backup from the Time Machine menu.
When the Time Machine icon stops spinning, unplug the TC from the wall outlet.
Wait 10-15 seconds.
Re-plug it in again.
After it has restarted (30-60 seconds), attempt another backup.
Time Machine will report “Preparing…” again, but it shouldn’t be lasting more than a couple of hours.

I have 2 auxillary disk drives for my MacBokk Pro. Time Machine uses one for backup and I use the other for storage, but I am unable to create a new folder or drag and drop files or folders to the aux drive.

I am unable to create a new folder on either of my auxillary disk drives. I can access the files and folders that were there when I transferred one of the drives from a PC. Time machine uses one for backup and I want to use the other to store photos which are large files. An help would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. If I reformat the drive will I be able to access the files on it from the MAC. I do not share the drive with a PC. The files were originally created on a PC which I no longer use. I do want to continue to access the files put there by the PC. I would like to not have to copy them over to the MAC hard drive just to use them. The second aux drive is new and works fine because it was formatted by the MAC. I can drag and drop files there and work with just as if they were on the internal drive.

Time Capsule best to dedicate for backup and usb external for other data or partition TC for dual

I have lots of video and photo and have 2TB drive on my iMAC and want to use TC for backup.
1) Since alot of video and photo, can plug in via ethernet or "cable/usb" vs. wireless to back up my main iMAC? Otherwise very slow via wireless and perhaps better to get Seagate Go Flex or WD and go Firewire right?
2) I do need and like to share other data shared vs. just TC to Time Machine Backup, reading this community input, can I confirm that best practice is to let TC have as much dedicated space as possible for Backup and mix partition to do 500GB per say for data on the TC?
Here's my use case:
1) Time Machine tied to TC for the 2TB via wired to main machine iMAC - I only have this 1 iMAC.
2) Like to share data with iPhone and iPAD some pictures, etc... so do this with USB port and see data on the shared drive via iPhone and iPAD - no need to backup - just viewing - but need wireless - how does iPhone and iPAD detect this device - do I need app or something to view shared drive stuff?
3) Like to share and light backup for couple PC Win7 laptops just to get files back and forth or share things between family member - nothing intense - but can PC win7 laptops see the shared drive via IP setup or something like that?
Sorry for multi questions - my first iMAC so still stumbling around to see what works best for me.

If I understand your question, depending on the signal strength, backing up over Wi-Fi can be rather slow. An Ethernet connection would be much faster, particularly for the first backup, which will the the largest. Backing up to a locally-connected disk will be faster still.

I'm not sure what you mean by "mix partition to do 500GB per say for data on the TC". It's not recommended to share the same volume for Time Machine output and other things.

If you mean that you need wireless to give an iPhone or iPad access to the Internet, a Time Capsule would do that. If you want to give those devices access to content on a Time Capsule, that's still an immature technology, although things may improve with iOS 5 or updates beyond that.

A WIn7 computer will be able to see files on the drive(s) of a Time Capsule. I haven't tried that, but instructions are available.

In the first instance, I'd use Onyx and run through its sequence of maintenance and tune up tools:
Verify, Maintenance, Cleaning.
I'd also reset the SMC and PRAM (Google them)
If that doesn't help then I'd look at System Preferences.. > Accounts > Login Items tab (not Login Options). Check what processes get started at login and decide which ones you don't want.
After that I'd use Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor to see if any processes are using a lot of computer power or if anything else nasty might be happening.
If none of this helped then my final step would be to reinstall OS X.

OK... now subtract the music. That's not part of the iPhone backup. Neither are apps, but in app data is.
Why are you asking? Did you get an error? If so, then clear out some disk space.

Migration 50 Laptop using MS MDT and USMT for BACKUP and DATArecovery

I currently manage a migration project for 50 Laptop via Microsoft MDT2010 and I use USMT for BACKUP and data recovery.
Obviously users have an Iphone and Itunes 10.x.
I would like to know what are the directories under Win XP I need to setup in order to backup the complete IPhone and what are the destination directories to inject them back into Win7 x86.

We want to make sure your photos are backed up successfully! Have you tried to stop the process and start it again? You can stop the process by stopping the Cloud and backup process completely in Settings>Applications>All>Verizon Cloud>Force stop. One it has stopped make sure you care connected to WiFi and try the backup again.

Heat up the bottom rubber mat with a hairdryer for 5-10 minutes to loosen the adhesive, then pull the rubber mat away from the bottom metal plate carefully.
Then use a screwdriver to remove the 10-12 screws to open up the case.

My Macbook Pro's hard drive is full from movies I have downloaded on itunes, so I need to store them somewhere else, ie not on my macbooks hard drive. At the same time I want to backup everything on the macbook. Is this possible?

You can, but the Time Capsule was really designed for Time Machine backups and there will be fight for space at some point in the future if you store a signficant amount of data on the Time Capsule drive.
You probably have not thought about this, but if your "original" copies of your movies, audio files, etc are on the MacBook now and you move them to the Time Capsule drive....your "originals" will be on the Time Capsule.
When....not if....you have a problem with the Time Capsule drive, you have no backups since your "originals" are on the drive that failed, and you lose everything.
A much safer strategy would be to add an external USB or Firewire drive to your MacBook and store all of your media files there. Then, Time Machine will backup both your MacBook and the external drive.
So, you have "originals" in one location and backups in another location. That's what a backup strategy is all about. In the event that one drive fails...and it will....you still have another copy on another drive.

Remote Site

-- SSID wpa
- Windows PDC with Active Directory, DHCP Server and local Data Storage
- ACS Version 3.2 for TACACS and RADIUS authentication --> External DB to Active Directory
Connection between Headquarter and Remote Site
- 2 Mbit ADSL
The problem is, that the wireless clients on the remote site get an ip address out of the headquarter DHCP Range 192.168.49.0 /24. The users on the remote site
most of the time only use the local data server in the remote office. With the actual design the hole traffic is switched over the 2 Mbit ADSL connection the the
WLC in the headquarter and back to the remote site. That works but it is not that performant.
The problem could be solved with HREAP, but what I think is, that it is not possible to have the same SSID at headquarter and remote site with different VLANs.
How can I achieve, that the clients on the remote site connect to the same SSID (wep or wpa), get an ip address from the remote site DHCP server (192.168.50.0)
and the traffic is switched localy.

Yes, putting the remote AP's in HREAP mode will allow the same WLANs to be available on the AP's but the traffic would be locally switched at the AP instead of being tunneled back to the controller. After you put the AP in HREAP mode you then would configure which VLAN you want traffic for each WLAN to be dumped onto for that AP.

How to partition external HD for backups and storage?

Hey All,
I'm just setting up a backup system for my computer for the first time and need some help. I have purchased Super Duper and a 1TB Fantom firewire external HD and am ready to start, but don't fully know how to begin. Here are some questions:
Question#1 - how do I partition the hard drive?
Question #2 - once I have partitioned it, can the partitions be changed down the road if I need to shift how I allocate the space?
Question #3 - if not, can you help me make guesses to how best to partition it? My internal HD has 74.41 gb capacity but is only using 31.94 gb right now. The fantom external HD uses up a lot of its space in formatting, so it actually has 931.24 GB available.
I was thinking of making two HD backup partitions so that I can alternate them for cloning -- say 70 GB each.
then I want a partition for my iphotos library - maybe 40 GB ( right now the library is 10 gb and I expect to be adding.
then a files partition for documents etc - probably 20 GB.
and a partition for video -- cause I am going to be starting a small documentary and will need to store video and editing. I'm new to this and really have no idea how much room it needs, but maybe 500 GB for starters.
is there some other sort of partition I should create?
any ideas are helpful.

The reference that baltwo points to is an excellent guide for a new drive. You also have very detailed instructions on creating backups in your SuperDuper Users Guide.
Everyone has their own style of backing up, so do what's comfortable for you. I schedule my backups to run in the middle of the night. They only backup the files that have changed since the last backup, so it shouldn't take that long. My log tells me that SuperDuper took about 14 minutes to perform last night's backup. It's also good to rotate so you have a system that hasn't been touched for a while in case you want that folder you trashed a week ago.
Yes, it is convenient to be able to boot from the clone to repair your internal and vice versa. For instance booting from your clone and running Disk Utility "Repair Disk" is a lot faster than using the DVD. Same goes for any utility you want to run that your internal needs to be not mounted to run like TechTool, DiskWarrior, etc.
It's good to keep another backup and keeping it on the net is fine (as long as you're not compromising any personal data). I really wasn't thinking of your house burning down but more along the lines of a hard drive failing when I made the statement about separate drives Yes, it is good to have a copy of your data "off premesis".given the need for extra free space for the system clones, if my HD is 74 Gb capacity with 32 GB used right now, won't I have plenty of space if I set aside 70 or 74 GB for that partition?Yes, even if your internal grows it should suffice if you stick with the 85% rule.
