ISight and iMovie

Does anyone know how to use iMovie with the neat fun-house mirror distortions available in iSight? When I use the iSight camera to make a video clip in iMovie I cannot access the cool image distortions available when I use the iSight camera by itself.

Yep, that's it. Didn't want to pay for an add-on, but I just may do it this time. Thank you so much for your quick answer and solution. This is my first time using Apple Discussions to solve a problem and am amazed that my first experience was so positive. Thanks again.

  • ISight and iMovies Editing Problems (File Size)

I recently used my MacBook Pro to record a live business related training. The trainer was using PowerPoint. After recording, I began to edit by separating some of the audio from the video (which I've done numerous times after recording with DV camera), then deleting some video and inserting some .jpg files of the PowerPoint slides to sync with the audio. But everytime I separated a piece of video from the audio, the file size grew tremendously even after I trashed the unwanted video. Note: my .jpgs were extremely small files. After a while, my file was more that 100 gigs. although it began at about 4 gigs. It got to the point where I couldn't even open the file. Does anyone know why this happens when recording with iSight? Also, I couldn't import even the original file into Final Cut Pro for editing. How do you get the file from iMovies to Final Cut?

  • Built in iSight and iMovie HD not connecting.

I would like to make movies with my iMovie with my iSight but I am having trouble doing this. When I go into iMovie [which is the newer version and should work with my iSight] I get a blue screen that says "No camera attached." That does not make any sense whatsoever, it works with iChat and Photobooth.
When I went to the apple store I was told to delete the preferences, which did absolutely nothing. I have tried everything I possibly can...it is just irritating me now. Ha. Can anyone give me some advice with this!?
    iMac PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Great links!
It did not work with iMovie HD (5) -- when I unplugged the Firewire camera, iMovie says "No Camera Attached" and does not switch to the built in iSight..
    Article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61929
says... "To use the built-in iSight included with some Macintosh models, use iMovie HD 6 or later."
so, I am looking for a hack basically.
    Thanks!

  • ISight and iMovie Audio Sync Solution

So I've been trying to figure out why the audio was out of sync by a couple of seconds.
The solution I found was turning off audio filter for the camera.
    iMovieHD >> Preferences >> Import
Just unchech the box and it appears to work great now.
Post a reply if this has helped you. Thanks.

How can i use the built in iSight in my new iMac to capture video in iMovie?

I've just verified that Quicktime Broadcaster will also import from the built-in iSight. Quicktime Broadcaster is a free download from Apple:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/broadcaster/
It can be a bit tricky to set up. Since it is designed for live broadcasts, it wants to compress everything pretty heavily. But it does work. There are detailed instructions on MacDevCenter:

  • IMovie, iSight, and 96 BM zero second clips...

Hi, this has never happened before, but I have a problem. I recorded some acts at an open mic with iSight and iMovie, but Imovie recognizes the clips as only zero seconds long, and the clips are all black. Nothing plays. I would assume nothing was recorded, but each clip has a differen't file size, revealed when I control click "get info". Any help would be appriciated! Thanks!
PS. I am using the latest version of imovie, and os x. I also have 768 MB of DDR SDRAM, and while I recorded using the isight I could see what I was recording in Imovie.

it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)
apple-i says that it is a quicktime movie when the clip is on the desktop

  • Isight is not working on ichat and skype, however will work on photo booth and imovie.

My isight will not work on ichat or skype, saying that there is no camera connected. isight will work in photo booth and imovie. It shows up in the system profiler. Have tried resetting SMC. Help?

    (1) Here is how I would proceed to isolate the underlying problem that requires corrective action.
    • Shut down everything.
    • Then restart modem and allow its self-test to complete.
    • Then restart router or wireless access point (if you have them) and allow self-test to complete.
    • Then restart Mac.
    • Use  > Software Update... (Update your Apple software if not current.)
    • Then test Photo Booth or iMovie with no other apps else running to ensure they still work.
    • Then quit your test app and try iChat with no other apps else running.
    • If iChat works, quit iChat and try Skype with no other apps else running.
    (2) If iChat works but Skype does not,
    • Verify that you are using the latest version of Skype that is compatible with your OS X (10.5.8) Mac.
    • Update if necessary.
    • Then test Skype again with no other apps else running.
    • If Skype problems remain but your camera works with everything else, Skype's comprehensive support system should best be able to help you use their product with your system.
    Start here:  https://support.skype.com/
Or, click this link for help specifically related to Mac video calls.
You can also search or post for help with your problem in Skype's dedicated Skype Discussions for Mac.  The Skype users who post there may have already solved the same problem.
If nothing else works, you can even sign in and ask for email help directly from Skype's Technical Support people.
    (3) If you still have trouble with more than one app, you may need to use Disk Utility to:
    • repair permissions,
    • repair your disk,
    • or even reinstall Mac OS.
If you reinstall OS X 10.5, use the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update to return to the latest version in one update step.

  • Low sound levels in Photo Booth and Imovie

I am a new Mac user and I am trying to record a short video to email using the built-in Isight camera. I have tried to use Photo Booth and Imovie and both of them produce videos with very, very low sound levels. You can barely hear it even when turned up to the max. I have checked the Sound preferences, and it is set to the built-in microphone, about mid-level. I've tried cranking it up to the max and with and without Use ambient noise reduction checked. It has no effect. How do I get a decent sound level? It is unusable at this point. I've updated my Software and repaired permissions, and still no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the response. I checked my midi audio settings and they are at the suggested rate. I called up an Apple support tech, and after trying a few things he basically said the internal mics are junk and go buy an external one. In the mean time, I've cranked up the sound levels to max, so I can hear it a little, but there is a ton of background hiss. I've done a web search and several people have reported this problem. so I think it might be something besides junk mics. Why do they install them if they are completely unusable? Thanks again. I'll try trashing the sound pref's too.

this is my first attempt at using iMovie-and i iSight camera>search: here's what it sez>
You can capture live video with your built-in iSight camera and import it directly into iMovie HD.
To capture live video with a built-in iSight camera:
    1. Open iMovie HD by clicking its icon in the Dock (or choosing Applications > iMovie HD).
    2. Click the mode switch to set iMovie HD to built-in camera mode.
    3. Click the camera icon to the left of the mode switch and choose Built-in iSight from the pop-up menu.
    4. Click the “Record With iSight” button in the iMovie monitor to begin recording. The video you see in the iMovie monitor is recorded as a clip in the iMovie Clips pane.
    5. Click the “Record With iSight” button again to stop recording.
You can record video as long as your iMac has enough disk space to store it.
well, the first problem is >2. what are my options after clicking Dock icon:
create a New Project (never had one)
Open an existing (again, never had one)
Make a Magic iMovie >>now that's interesting, but what the hey is it? Directions didn't mention this?
what should i do: Magic or New ??
So i'll choose Open New...name it "taDec"
    Problems Immediately!!> gotta create and store> oh my...but i get a screen/window named "taDec" > ((frig the spellin' !!))
where's the "mode switch"?>>there isn't a "mode switch"> nor is there in "the menu"...?
there is nothing about "i Sight camera" anywhere....so it can't be chosen....
yeah, i'm still searchin'......trying to make a video of me with a friggin tooth ache trying to use "HELP"!((and this 'Forum'> note this, i'm takin' 6 asperin and a large vodka Egg Nog! > it better get better!!
(this 'Earthmouse' is starting to act weirdlhy too.....(-:
    m

Create a New Project (of course you haven't had one it's new!) and choose a location to save it to.
Throw the Mode Switch from the scissors (Edit Mode) towards the left where the picture of camera is (Capture/Import Mode).
(As you can see I don't have an iSight attached)HTH

  • ISight with iMovie

I'm trying to use the built-in camera (iSight) with iMovie. I get a message to connect a camera. But I want to use the built-i camera.
I have used it in the past, but then I had to do a re-install and after that I cannot connect to the camera. Can anybody help me, please?

What about re-installing iMovie/iLife again? Please tell me how to do that again...
You may find some instructions in this direct download Leopard Installation and Setup Guide
Or post in the iMovie forums for custom installation instructions.

  • Isight in imovie

hi! probably a dumb question but i really am no techie and i tried to look for it in the tutorials but i couldn't find it.
i'd like to record a simple video blog on imovie hd using my built in isight. how do i go about doing this? i have no idea where to click :S

Do you have iChat AV on your computer?
    Taken from iMovie Help:
"Capturing live video from an iSight camera
You can capture live video from your iSight camera directly into iMovie HD.
IMPORTANT: To use iSight with iMovie HD, you must have iChat AV on your computer. If you can't use iChat AV, then you can't use IIDC cameras such as iSight with iMovie HD.
To capture live video from an iSight camera:
Open the privacy shutter on your iSight.
Click the mode switch to set iMovie HD to camera mode (shown above).
Click the camera icon to the left of the mode switch and choose iSight from the pop-up menu.
Click the Record With iSight button at the bottom of the iMovie monitor.
The video you see in the iMovie monitor is recorded as a clip in the Clips pane.
Click Record With iSight again to stop recording.
You can record video as long as you have enough disk space to hold it."
I also noticed that you are not at 10.4.9, that may have something to do with it.

  • Recording video using external iSight and audio using wired input

I would like to be able to record video using an external iSight camera I have from my old powerbook, but I don't want the audio to record through the internal microphone...I want it to record through a wired input coming off a mixer...is this possible?

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
"..is this possible?.." ..I don't think so. By connecting an external FireWire iSight camera, iMovie expects both the vision and the sound to come in down the same FireWire cable.
If you need to use a separate audio input, you may be able to do it by connecting a FireWire-capable camcorder (..a tape-based miniDV or HDV camcorder which uses a FireWire connection to attach to a Mac..) and then feeding your mixer's output to the camcorder's external-mic input ..at very low volume, of course, so that you don't wreck the camcorder's input.
This entails using a camcorder which does have an external-mic (or line) input. That way, the picture from the camcorder will go straight into iMovie, as will the audio which is being fed into the camcorder ..thus both reaching iMovie via the camera's FireWire connection.

  • I want to record 5+ hours with iSight in iMovie'08

I am trying to record my dog while I'm at work using my iSight in iMovie '08. The only problem is that when I come home to playback what's been recorded, it's only recorded approximately one hour and 45 minutes. Is there any way I can make it record for the entire 5 hours that I am away? Thanks!

    Welcome to Discussions, Fran.
    Some suggestions for your consideration:
    (1) As a dog lover, my best suggestion is that you take pooch to work or change jobs to a place that allows it. Being a pack animal, puppy will miss you HORRIBLY while you are away unless there is some other part of the "pack" there.
    (2) iMovie should work if you have space. However, digital video takes a LOT of space (220 Mb/minute!), so a lack of free space will cause problems for you.  To work properly, OS X also needs additional free space beyond that required for file storage. For "5+ hours" of recording with iMovie, check to be sure that you have about 100 Gb of available space on your hard disk.
If space is a problem and you cannot delete enough of your files for sufficient room, you might consider storing or moving your video library to an external hard disk.
    (3) Also, to reduce processor load for capture and recording, quit all other apps before starting your iMovie session. Do anything else you can to reduce processor and disk workload while you record, too.&ensp.For instance, if you use wireless, turn off your Airport card.
    (4) Be sure your Mac is running at its peak. Your system info shows that you are still using Mac OS X (10.5.3). Unless there is compelling reason to the contrary, you should update to the latest version of Leopard. If you do not want to upgrade to Snow Leopard, use 10.5.8.
If you upgrade to 10.6, follow its instructions. Otherwise, I suggest the following method for updating your OS:
First, use Disk Utility to repair permissions.  Then download and apply the 10.5.8 COMBO update:
      http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
Repair permissions IMMEDIATELY again after the restart that finishes the installation.
    (5) One other alternative is to try a different application for your video recording. Although many apps can record movie or video clip, I usually use QuickTime Pro. QT Pro is easy to use, and it has a Preferences... > Recoding setting that allows you to change the recording quality to capture smaller files. These smaller video streams might work better for the long duration recording you want.

  • Using built-in iSight w/iMovie on the Intel iMac? Help!

I just got a new intel iMac- and the instructions for using the built-in iSight camera to record video into iMovie 6 are really difficult to find- and most seem to refer to either earlier versions-
Can anyone give me a quick walk through, or point me in the direction of instructions for the built-in iMac and iMovie 6? I'm having a heck of a time figuring it out.
    Thanks.
    I looked at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61929
& other applications aren't on, etc.-

Welcome, Sheila. For what I know about built-in iSight, see Built-in iSight ( Late 2005 -> ). There should be little problem using your internal iSight to record into iMovie 6 if you have the slider under the edit window set at the "camera" (import) icon rather than the "scissors" (edit) icon.
Your questions are more likely related to using iMovie. If the above link and iMovie > Help on your Mac do not get you going, try Apple's Mac 101, Lesson 13: iMovie HD tutorial. That should get you going.
If you need more help with iMovie 6, try searching or posting in the iMovie HD 6 Discussions area.
