ISight and Parallels Desktop 3 for Mac

Can someone tell me how to get my built-in iSight to work with Parallels 3? I am using Windows XP-SP2 and a MacBook Pro 2.4.
Have selected the Built-in iSight in the Parallels USB options and that shows an iSight in Device Manager, but there are no drivers installed.
I tried making a Windows driver disk from the Boot Camp install, but when I try and run that install from XP is says that it has encountered an error and gives no options but Finish.
Thanks for any assistance

Hello Richard,
Unless you get some help from a Parallels user here, your best help for Parallels-specific questions like this will most likely be come from Parallels' application Help on your Mac or Parallels Support on the web.
If Help or the suggestions in the Parallels FAQ entitled My iSight doesn't work on Parallels Desktop for Mac do not help, try searching the Parallels Knowledge Base for other possible ideas. Beyond that, Parallels offers a wide range of product support options, including Free e-mail support.

    All,
A very interesting NOTE to this thread. In order to try and get the "ignore permissions" box to show up in GET INFO (so I could execute Matt the Magician's solution to file sharing issues)-- I ran the terminal command for disabling ACLs on my internal HD / start up disk (as indicated in the linked thread to BDAqua's forum).
Although I understand that this was useless for disabling permissions on the start up disk (as everyone here pointed out) and allowing me to see the "ignore permissions" check box - somehow it did seem to fix my file sharing problem...and that was the root problem I wanted solved in the first place! After doing the terminal command and a quick reboot, I went in and tested file sharing on the chosen directory and I can create new files or work from existing files in the directory, with both users being able to modify / and save from both machines and each machine sees the revisions and can build from them. Bottom line - I'm stoked and want to thank everyone for their help.
The only other tweak I made was going over to my wife's machine and instead of using her log in / password, I just used my name and password to connect to my main machine that was sharing directories. Maybe that's what fixed the problem or the ACL disable but either way...I'm up and running the way I want to be.
Hope this thread helps anyone else who has these file sharing / permissions issues with Leopard. Especially for anyone wanting to do such a simple file sharing set up between 2 computers. I wish I understood exactly which tweak fixed the problem, but at least it works the way I want now.
So happy to be done w/this one!
Thx everyone. Any additional input on what solved it is welcome, so my curiosity is quelled...

  • Is  mountain lion compatible with parallels desktop 5 for Mac?

I currently have Mac OS X. 6 snow leopard and want to upgrade to the latest version of Lion.  But I use Parallels desktop 5 for Mac.  Will this be compatible?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Only Parallels Desktop 7 and newer are supported on OS X Mountain Lion. Update Parallels Desktop before upgrading to Mountain Lion. Make a backup of your data with Time Machine and check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • 1 hv bought d Parallels Desktop 9 for mac. how to install without installation CD? jus hv activation key...

i hv bought d Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac. how to intall it without installation CD? jus hv activation key...

From what you say, you have probably opened Parallels Desktop. If you were not asked for your activation key, you will find a button called "Parallels Desktop" at the top left part of the screen, so press it, and you will find an option named "Activate" or something similar. Select it, and if Parallels Desktop is not activated, type the activation key. That's all.
Respecting to the window you are seeing now, you have to choose one option to create a virtual machine. For example, if you have got the operating system you want to install in a DVD (for example, Windows), choose DVD. If you have got the operating system installer in an ISO file, choose Image File. You can find more help in the Parallels website.

  • I have Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4, Quickbooks Pro 2010, Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac, Operating in Windows 7.  Are there any recommendations for running Quickbooks Pro 2010?

I have Mac OSX Lion 10.7.4, Quickbooks Pro 2010, Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac, Operating in Windows 7.  Quicbooks Pro 2010 is not responding or opening currently. Quickbooks does not support Parallels anymore.  I hear Apple Bootcamp is an opton.  Are there any recommendations for running Quickbooks Pro 2010 on Mac?

QuickBooks Pro 2010 for Mac is not supported in Lion. QB Pro 2011 will work, but I just got an email today that 2011 will not be updated to work in Mountain Lion. QB Pro 2012 will be updated for ML.
Be aware that the Mac version of QuickBooks is shamefully lacking in features compared to the Windows version. I do use the Mac version, but it has more features than I need for a small business, so it doesn't affect me. No one knows why Intuit seems to hate Mac users, but they show it every day.
If QB Pro 2012 for Mac can be downloaded as a demo, I would strongly suggest testing with it before making a final decision. You will be able to import the Windows data, but possibly not all of it, depending on the Windows version features you use.
Boot Camp allows you to install Windows on its own, bootable partition. When you boot to it, you are of course running Windows in every sense of the word. Just on Mac hardware rather than typical PC gear. Your Windows version of QB will work there without issue. The problem is having to boot back and forth between Windows and OS X, depending on what software it is you need to use at the time.

  • Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac ( Windows)

Is Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac ( Windows) a good system to add onto your mac? Or Will it make it slow?

As Ttut says, Parallels runs as an application, so there is absolutely no OS X performance decrease when Parallels is not running.
The good news is that you can download the Parallels 7 Desktop Trial and try it out for a few days before you decide to purchase it: http://www.parallels.com/download/desktop/ (But you still need a full copy of whichever Windows version you will use in order to test Parallels.)
The fastest WIndows performance on a Mac is achieved without Parallels. Use Boot Camp to install Windows and then boot directly into Windows at start-up. It is comparable to running Windows on a similarly-configured Windows PC. But with Boot Camp, you must reboot to switch back and forth between OS X and Windows.
But if you absolutely MUST use both Windows AND OS X applications at the same time, Parallels can do it. Both Windows performance and OS X performance are diminished by about 50% when both operating systems are running at the same time. Processor-intensive applications like graphics, photo, and video editing suffer the most noticeable performance hit. Text editing applications suffer the least. Online browsing experience depends upon the website visited. Flash-heavy websites suffer a lot.
Check the Parallels website and be certain that your MacBook has enough free hard drive space and enough RAM.

  • Norton in my Windows' Parallels desktop 7 for Mac?

    Hello,
I,m new in the here and with Mac. I'll be grate for the help.
Will I protect my iMac if I introduce Norton in my Windows' Paralles desktop 7 for Mac?
    Thanks
    Gl0

    Hello:
IMHO, NEVER use Norton (or any other A/V software) on a Mac.  There are no viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none.
What you do with Windows is up to you.  In answer to your question, your Windows and OS X systems are separate.

  • Parallels desktop 10 for mac

    Hi all,
After using apple's pages, I find it difficult to use effectively. Hence, I am intending to install the pc versions of microsoft word, powerpoint and excel onto my mac. My question is: using parallels desktop 10, is it possible to use pc versions of word, powerpoint and excel without installing windows os?
    Thanks.

You might find the Office for Mac 2015 15.8.1 Preview a practical alternative to the cost of Parallels, Windows, and Office 2013. I installed this Preview suite on a 2014 MBA with Yosemite 10.10.2.

  • Parallels Desktop 8 for Mac

I am not sure where to post this, but I really want to use Paint Shop Pro again except that there is no Mac version, so I was wondering one thing: do I have to install a Windows OS before installing Paint Shop Pro? or would installing paralles desktop be enough to install it and use it?
    Thank you,

I, too, am stuck with having to use Windows platform software (Nvivo 10) whilst I wait for the Mac platform release. I'm trialling Parallels Desktop 8 on my MBP running OS10.8.3. So far I like the functional ease of Parallels and that will help when I come to processing video files edited on the Mac side in Final Cut and then dropped into Nvivo for analysis. Do you - or anyone - know much about VirtualBox functionality?
I have never embarked upon this shared system before and once Nvivo releases the Mac version I will switch in a heartbeat. However until then I am saddled with the shared hard drive...Does VirtualBox have the same ease of functionality and the like? I'd rather open source for 6-8 months than invest heavily in Parallels and Windows...
Any advice offered will be greatly received!

  • I'm a bit confused, do I purchase Windows 7 full version, or Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac? I am currently running on OS X Mountain Lion.

I'm new to using Mac, however my new job requires me to work on Windows...Go figure, right after I JUST buy my new iMac...anyways, I was told to use bootcamp, however I'm getting different opinions as to what I'm supposed to purchase...Do I just buy Windows 7 or the Parallel Desktop for Mac?
    Thanks in advanced!

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.
A Windows 7 installer disc is a requirement for Boot Camp and the virualization software.

  • Parallels Desktop Software for Mac

My husband has several business CD Programs, provided by his customers, that can only be opened with Windows. Will Parallels Desktop for Mac work with OS X 10.3.9? This would be his only purpose in purchasing the software. Efforts to get an answer from the Parallels website have been fruitless. Figured if anyone would know it would be Apple folks.
    Thanks,
    Helen Donnelly

Parallels is designed only to work on Intel Macs. Since Intel Macs all originally came with 10.4.4 or later, logic would say that Parallels does not work with it.
Therefore I'd be looking for a PowerPC solution from my FAQ* http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
Note, you also have to be extremely careful with such programs as many are provided on non-standard disks which may not work with a slot loading drive, if that's what you have:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58641
If you have a slot loading drive and the disks are obviously nonstandard http://www.macsales.com/ offers a variety of tray loading drives that work well with the Mac.
A slot loading drive has no "cup-holder" type drawer (NEVER should it be used as a cup-holder!) that comes out, and just lets you insert the disk in a slot on the machine.
Edit: the iMac G4 has a tray, but it is very hard to eject manually, and therefore I'd still use an external optical drive as opposed to the one internal to the iMac G4. If you have another model Mac, please let us know.

  • Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac

I just purchased Parallels and when I open my Windows, there was a notice to install an AntiVirus program.
After doing some reading on the Net and calling Parallels Customer Support, what I read and what the Cust Support recommended was that I should treat this Parallels Windows just as though I were operating a PC. Therefore, yes get an antivirus program.
Any suggestions for an AntiVirus Program, that would run well with the Parallels Program/Windows 7 ???
    Thank you.

I read all the reviews, have bought  and used - and detested - Kaspersky, it really is annoying and slows things down.
Something may be needed but KIS?  Malewarebytes and SAS (SuperAntiSpyware) may or may not be the best, but they perform admirably. And own and used KIS and PURE for years.
Notice they offer "CleanMyMac" which isn't that junkware?
I think the reason so many security suites for Mac are terrible might have to do with what is not being shared and how closed the API are, even though it is a *nix foundation.
