Isight and skype issues

ive been using my firewire connected isight to talk to my girlfirend back home while im in rome for the quarter. everything has been going fine, im on my 15 inch powerbook g4 and she just got a macbook. isight has been fine, no real issues except for the horrible internet here.
anyways, i let my friends download skype beta for mac so they could use my camera to talk to people back home and it seems that ever since then my camera does not function properly. i can use it to see myself and all that goodstuff, and my computer recognizes it fine in the system profiler but it wont connect, citing an error -8. i have a whole log on what happens if anyone want to read it. i know its not her camera because i used a new intel imac to talk to her isight to isight on the same network.
anyways, i was thinking its a settings thing and skype modified my internet setting which wont allow my ichat to connect to hers properly. if there is anyway to reset this or any other ways i could fix this please let me know.

I installed Skype and contacted a friend. I can see her, but she can't see me.
The problem appears to be with my iSight; the Skype preferences can't detect a camera.
    I'm on a Macbook running 10.5.2.

  • ISight and Skype?

Does Skype 1.4 or 1.5 (Beta) support video for Mac? The FAQ for Skype says to go to "Tools> Options> Video" to set up video, but I don't have a pulldown for "Tools" nor can I find anything in the Preferences that looks like video set up. Any help anyone can offer is appreciated. Thanks, Andy

Uhm...Blonde moment. No I wasn't, but now I am and it works great. I seem to have missed that part of the webpage. Thanks much.
I have sucessfully used the video from Mac to Mac. Has anyone seen any problems going Mac to Windows?

  • Gtalk and Skype issues

I have already created a skype and gtalk account on my device but when ever i try to use any 1 of them or just tap on New Im option under Conversation it says" Availability must be online to perform this action". is this a bug or am i missing something.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

"Conversation it says" Availability must be online to perform this action". is this a bug or am i missing something. "
Well yes, since both are IP based applications you have to be "online" with a tcp/ip,sip protocol running.  This does not mean that you have to be online via WiFi - if you have a compatible dataplan from a carrier that allows the protocols you can do skype/gtalk calls via gsm or 3G.

  • Isight alternatives and skype

Because of the price and discontinuation of isight; i too am looking at using, to be precise, a sony DCRHC38E MiniDV Handycam.
I will be using it with an ibookG4 (2005). I will use a 4(handycam) to 6(ibook) pin firewire cable to connect the two.
    Two questions.
    1. Does this type of set up work with skype?
    2. Is this a suitable video camera for this use? (i have not purchased it yet)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, tague
Unless you get more specific answers here...
    (1) You can find excellent help for Skype-specific questions like this one in the Skype Help pages. In addition to the Users Guides, Forums dedicated to Skype issues, and other help resources, you can even ask for individual email help directly from Skype.
    (2) Your DCR-HC38 may work. You should take your iBook with you and try it before you buy. My old Sony DCR-TRV17 and DCR-TRV70 mini-DV cameras both work very well, but they are both now discontinued. Some of the newer Sony camcorders are not Mac friendly, but I do not know which, so it will be necessary for you to test. Please let us know what you find.
One other thing that could cause problems. You specify DCRHC38E. Is that a PAL camera? You may need the DCRHC38 NTSC version to work with your Mac, but again, a test will answer this question.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • ISight with Skype and aMSN - inverted picture

When I use iSight with Skype or aMSN, the picture is horizontally inverted and no longer functions as if I'm looking into a mirror like with iChat.
There are no options in either program to change this (that I can find). Does anyone know of a solution? I would like flip it horizontally so the image is as if I was looking into a mirror as per iChat.

    Hello Mr_Harley,
Did you get enough info from Tony (Defcom) to consider your question Answered?
I know of no cheaper solution to your problem for both Skype and aMSN than the $8 iGlasses suggestion than Tony offered, but there may be individual solutions that some aMSN or Skype users could recommend.
If you are willing to consider different software for each application, you can search the great Skype Help pages for Skype-specific help or post your question in the Skype for Mac OS X forum.
For a aMSN-specific solution, try a search or post in the aMSN Forum.

  • Firewire iSight and 10.4.9 Issues

    Ok,
So we have this Firewire iSight camera. It works fine when plugged into 1 mac. However when we plug it into another mac, there is no power light coming on.
I did plug in an external FW400 drive and it worked great.
I think the issue is that there is iSight driver software on the machine as it never had an iSight before.
I attempted to download some software for it from Apple however it only supports Panther.
Now I know these things shipped with some software. How do I get my hands on some Tiger compatible driver / software for this camera?
    To sum:
The target computer has operational firewire ports
The iSight works on other computers
The iSight MUST work on this particular machine as it is for a user.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Ok.
Now I know these things shipped with some software.
No, they didn't. All the software you need for iSight is built into the OS. You can add applications that can use your iSight to those that Apple bundles with the OS or the Macs it sells (examples, iChat, iMovie, etc.), but all "drivers" are built into OS X.
Restart your Mac with no unnecessary peripherals connected and try the suggestions here:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93240
If your iSight still does not work with any app, check for Possible hardware or software conflicts with iSight or iChat.
I cannot tell specifically which Mac and OS are giving you difficulty (10.4.9 in the subject line but 10.5 in your System info), but if you are using 10.4.9 on a PPC Mac, you can try the following before seeing your Apple Service Technician:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC).
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.

  • ISight  and PC for skype

I read that it was difficult to use iSight with XP, but is it impossible?
I have a Mac at home and a laptop from work with XP. at the moment, the Vskype is only for PC, and I want to get the iSight to use with both?
    thanks.

    Hello HPNY
I read that it was difficult to use iSight with XP, but is it impossible?
Based on what I have seen here, the answer is yes unless you are willing to accept partial function. To use iSight to its full potential, you need a Mac.
As I recall, about a year ago, one person posted that he made an iSight work properly with XP by editing the code in a Windows video driver to correct the gamma to usable, experimentally derived, values. I did not fully understand it, but, if this is within your capability, you might want to consider using an iSight as your PC webcam.
I asked him to post the specifics of what driver he modified and what values he used, but he never posted back the info. If you get it working, please post the info back here because this is a frequently asked question.
Some users claim that they can make either audio
    b or
video work with a particular PC application, but nobody else has reported that both audio and video work simultaneously.
For instance, Johan Dam, "There is a program for iSight for Windows Xp?" msg # 2.1.1.1.1, Jul 3, 2005 reports that the Splitcam app for his PC lets him use iSight for video only.
My best suggestions are in the iSight and the PC FAQ.

  • Standalone iSight and Snow Leopard

I have a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard installed on it and an Apple Display that doesn't have a built-in camera, so I thought I would buy one of those iSight cameras (through Ebay) to be able to use it through Skype and iChat.
Could anyone please tell me whether a standalone iSight (1) would work on Snow Leopard, and (2) with the 800 firewire port (I have 400-to-800 adapter). Thank you.

    nycgraphiste wrote:
Thank you for your responses. Sorry I couldn't get back to you any sooner.
    NP
So if I'm getting this right, not all of the iSight cameras work, ...
    You are correct.
No broken iSight works. Your problem is how to find out whether one is broken before you buy it.
The issue for me is that external iSights are NOT rugged devices, and you have no idea how it was treated or used during its existence. Moreover, all external iSights are now old (by consumer electronics standards,) and they no longer covered by Apple Warranty.
Therefore, unless you can physically test or have an Apple Technician check any external iSight before you buy it, you are at the mercy of the seller if the one you buy does not work for you.
... only the ones with the updated firmware, is that so?
    Not so.
Firmware Updates do NOT enable external iSight, they only "Improve" performance. Regardless of any Firewire iSight's Firmware (Product Revision) level, external iSight ought to function. If not, the iSight, cables, connections, your Mac, or your Mac's software that operates iSight requires service.
To test and troubleshoot any external iSight, you can use the suggestions in "How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional":
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
If let's say I get one with the old firmware will I able to update it through the Software Update ...?
Probably not with a Snow Leopard Mac.
If you decide to buy an external iSight, and if you need to apply the Firmware 1.0.3 updater but your Mac's Software Update... does not work, my suggestions on how to do it are at
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10084429&#10084429
And what does it mean “if you can find one that works?”
It means what the standard US English words say. As noted above, unless you or your Apple Technician can check a particular iSight, you do not know that it works.
    What's UVC webcam?
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USBvideo_deviceclass
I might look into other cameras, but ...
Any working UVC webcam can work for you. More features and quality cost more, so buy what is prudent for your budget and needs.
If you are interested in saving money and already have one, any Mac-compatible, Firewire-connected, mini-DV camcorder can function as your webcam.
    What do you think?
In addition to my thoughts already posted here, see this user tip:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2018211
I agree with most of the comments and references there.
All I need it for is ... Skype...
For dedicated use with Skype, sort for the Macintosh-compatible webcams that Skype sells:
      http://shop.skype.com/webcams/
They should certainly work well with Skype, so you might want to consider one of those.
With your 10.6.x Mac, should you eventually decide to try some other webcam video things, many of the other apps listed in the following link can also work with the webcam you buy:

Does anyone have any ideas that could help us? I am having her download skype to see if thats more successful but this is going to be our primary mode of contact for the next year and I am REALLY worried. We are both using external iSights and we tried audio with and without them plugged in.
Everytime either of us tries anything it gets the the stage where it says "connecting" then gives the error message.
Any help would be really appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Stephen Miller

    Hi,
Hotels are notoriously difficult for iChat because of the way
    1) the ports are not always open
    2) the number of people sharing the connection.
For Mail you probably have POP and SMTP server set for one location and the hotel's ISP is not letting you go to those though their server. Web Mail may be the only way around this.
Ask the hotel if they have the ports open for iChat.
You may not be able to do much about the Bandwidth/user issue.
I take it you have done the Quicktime setting as you have posted before.

    Hi
Have you enabled skype video, goto skype prefs/video make sure you have a tick in the "enable skype video" box and a tick in "start my video automatically".
What version of skype are you using as it is now 2.0.0.6 http://www.skype.com/download/skype/macosx/index.html

  • Facebook and skype notifications

I have a lumia 920 and can't get fb and skype notifications work.
The worked just after the installation of the apps, but then they stopped working.
The apps are fine, I just don't see toast nor tile notifications.
Any ideas? This isn't a borderline issue for a smartphone..
    Fabio

I'm not talking about FB chat. That is ok on my phone.
I'm referring to facebook notifications instead (comments, likes and so on):
Me tile has too much limited functionalities (for instance no groups notifications..), thus I installed FB Microsoft app.
In the app notifications are sometimes working. But most of the time I couldn't get them, even after a long time after their publishing.
It seems to be a facebook app issue in this case, but is it possible on a smartphone to lack social functionalities like this? I'm not talking about minor socials web sites, but Facebook.
The forum is plenty of topics describing exactly this issue, but no solutions yet.
    Does someone have any news?
    Fabio

  • Hello, I've updated the iPhone I have got I have a problem I hope you respond to some of the applications no longer work, such as the safari and skype and many applications are no longer working with the ios7.0.4

Hello, I've updated the iPhone I have got I have a problem I hope you respond to some of the applications no longer work, such as the safari and skype and many applications are no longer working with the ios7.0.4

    Standard troubleshooting...
    1. Try a Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the slider.  Slide to power off.  Restart by pressing the sleep/lock button until you see the Apple logo.
    2. Try a Reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
    3. Remove apps from Recently Used (multi-tasking) list...
    - From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
    - Swipe up on the app preview card to remove it from the list
    - Press the home button when done.
    4. If still a problem restore with your backup.
    5. If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.
    6. If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.
