ISight audio input no available on sound preferences

Hi All
My isight worked fine on both my G4 Powerbook and My G5 PPC until recently - I tried plugging it intp my G5 but although I can conect and people can see me during iChat they cannot hear me. I tried to change the settings in
iChat 3 > Preferences > Video > Microphone
But the Isight is no longer available as a input.
I tried the same in Sys prefences > sound > inputs
But again it is not showing.
The camera works fine for sound (and shows up on iChat and Sound Prefs) on my G4 powerbook.
I've looked through the forums but not found a solution to my problem.
Hope someone can help as this is very frustrating:)
Peace

G5 2Ghz Dual   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hello Sonorous. It sounds like a Firewire or connection problem with your G5. You will need to do some trouble shooting to find the underlying cause of your symptoms.
Be sure you do not have any Possible hardware or software conflicts on your G5.
Then try the tests and suggestions from How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional on your G5, particularly those related to your connecting cable and Firewire. Reconnecting the cable plugs, the 5 minute shutdown, changing cables, or merely swapping cable ends will sometime resolve problems like yours.
If the Firewire suggestions do not help, and if your Mac OS X maintenance is not up to date, test again after performing maintenance.
If the problem is limited only to iChat AV, consider the troubleshooting suggestions from How to get iChat AV working again. If your only problem is iChat AV, and if the problem began after applying a recent update, you may need to download a fresh copy of the update from the "Downloads" link at the top of this page a reapply it.
Applying the 10.4.6 Combo Updater suggestion may also correct your problem. 10.4.6 resolves a number of issues with older versions of Tiger like the Mac OS X (10.4.3) version you show in your System Info.

  • I'm trying to plug an external audio device (tape deck) into the audio input. In the sound preferences pane I'm only getting the built in microphone as an option. I tried restarting without effect. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

For some reason the option to select switch the audio port to 'input' is not coming up.
    Thanks.

If your computer is running Snow Leopard, and is not at 10.6.8, you could use
Software Update to get final Combo Update 10.6.8 v. 1.1 for Snow Leopard.
Aside from that (you may have already done so) here is a free-running
application that may help your line-in audio, by the name of LineIn
    http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/ and it suggests possibilities.
There also are USB input methods using those for audio; not sure what
is still available, a few great ones no longer were. One from Belkin a few
years ago, called the iMic, offered great options over USB.
Hopefully the free application can help.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Audio input is not playing sound.

I have a HP Touchsmart 2. I run windows 7 home premium Bit. Whenever I plug my headphones into the left headphone audio jack you can barely hear any sound.  For instance if I was playing a movie you can hear some of the background sounds (background music but no speech) faintly.  I have checked the master volume and everything is up. The audio plays fine when nothing is plugged in.  I haven't messed with any of the settings.  The other week I did install Rosetta stone and started using there headphones/microphone that plugs into a different port on the right hand side.  All audio seems to be coming through the USB por ton the right hand side now.  I don't know how to change settings back.  Please help!

Apparently the Audio Midi Setup configuration did not imply that it wasn't stereo. I was not using Audacity correctly to record stereo - but now I am. Problem solved.

  • HT3625 I don't have a "Use audio for:" menu in my system preferences

When I go to system preferences and try to follow all of the directions in the article, there isn't any menu or anything that says "Use audio for:" when I'm on the input tab of the sound preferences.  How can I get my MBP use the audio input instead of detecting it as an audio output?

    malcolm007,
Here is a pin description of the 4 pin connector, there impedence and shunting that needs to be taken into consideration, not to mention the response curve that this is optomized for,ie:headset mic response. There could be potential damaged cause by incorrect matching and shunting (shorting certain pins to ground) you might consider calling Apple and see what their response is. You can even try experimenting at your own risk, I myself can make no recomendation and would advise against it as you could risk damaging your device. I found no data that would allow an informed decision on my part. The audio quality would most likely be sub par for a music type of application anyways, as it is most likey optomized for the headset mic as prviously mentioned.
USB interfaces are cheap and most sound good and will definatly provide a safe and flexible way to get in.

  • All audio input dead -- internal mic, USB mic

Hey folks, for some reason my iMac G5 suddenly will not recognize any sources of audio input.
In the Sound pref pane, the "internal microphone" option under the Input tab is not even there anymore. Only line-in.
In addition, when I check input levels with an external (USB) mic, I get zilch. Otherwise, the USB on this machine works fine, and furthermore this same mic works without a hitch on a G4 Powerbook.
Since this is happening on two very different hardware channels, it must be a software issue.
I've tried resetting the system's audio by restarting, running Garage Band, running Audacity, anything I could think of. Nothing works.
As to what could have triggered this change, three events happened recently around the same time involving audio on this machine: iTunes 10.0.1 update; Rogue Amoeba SoundSource update from 2.0 to 2.5; and a PRAM reset when I recently had all audio output also die. (The PRAM reset fixed the output issue.)
    Any ideas?

  • No audio input devices on Satellite L100-120

    Hello!
I have Satellite L100-120 Notebook. I have problem setting up audio capture device. Sound works just fine, but there is no audio input device (disabled in sound manager).
I have Windows XP SP3 installed.
    sound driver is sound-psla0-xp-31100
    any ideas?

    Hi there,
did you already tried the genuine sounddrivers from conexant? Maybe your audio input device works after installing the sound card manufacturers driver.
Another reason could be the SP3 which brings besides the benefits some driver related problems with, would be also a option to check the microsoft knowledgebase for some fixes or workarounds.
Just search for conexant sound driver and maybe you will find something.

  • ISight microphone no longer available in Audio Preferences or iChat

I have an iSight camera that was working with my Mac Mini when I first got the camera. But somewhere along the line the microphone vanished from the list of audio sources available in the Audio Preferences, or iChat, or anywhere else.
    The camera works fine.
I just can't access the microphone.
The camera and microphone itself work fine when plugged into another computer. I even sent the iSight back to Apple, but the one I got back has the same problem, so it's something about my machine or the software environment.
I have been upgrading my software regularly, but I don't recall any correlation between an upgrade and the microphone stopping working. However, since I wasn't using the iSight regularly I could have missed this.
I see the Apple_iSight and AppleFWAudio kexts loaded:

... the microphone vanished from the
list of audio sources available in the Audio
    Preferences, or iChat, or anywhere
    else.Does that really mean that
when iSight is plugged in it is not an available
choice in the System Preferences... > Sound >
    Input device list?
Yes, that's correct. The iSight is not visible in the System Preferences... > Sound > Input device list.
If so you may have a faulty Firewire cable.
    I don't think so, because:
    * This iSight works fine -- video and audio -- on another machine.
    * The video and audio travels over the same data lines in the Firewire cable, and the video works fine. Cable problems would affect both audio and video.
Does "or iChat" mean, when iChat AV is the active app
and iSight is plugged in, that "iSight Built-in" is
not available in the iChat > Preferences... >
    Video > Microphone: Choices Bar?
Yes, that's correct. The iSight doesn't appear in that list of choices.
When iSight is plugged in and iChat AV is the active
app, is there a tick (check) mark next to iChat >
    Video > Microphone Enabled ?
Yes, but the menu choice is greyed out.
What other apps are "anywhere else": iMovie,
QuickTime Pro, what? Please list all apps you know
    have the problem.
iMovie HD: can record from iSight, but there is no audio.
Garage Band: iSight is not available among the choices of audio inputs.
AU Lab (in Developer Tools): iSight is not available among the choices of audio inputs.
If you have added anything new to your Mac, consider
    Possible hardware or software
    conflicts.
Aren't there useful diagnostic logs somewhere? I'm used to copious debug output (from drivers, especially) when problems occur on my Linux systems. Is there somewhere to turn up the verbosity of the debug messages?
I sometimes get the feeling that the Mac is trying to hide important details about problems from me, and treating me like a baby. I mean, I have and know how to use a kernel debugger (though not yet on the Mac), oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers; I should be able to get the information I need to diagnose problems, rather than trying shotgun solutions.
If you haven't kept your Mac OS X maintenance up to
    date, try that now.
I have repaired permissions; I will try a disk repair although I have no reason to believe that there are any file system problems (again, there are no debug messages in the logs that would indicate something like that).
Consider applying the 10.4.5 Combo Updater using the
method in How I Update My Mac OS X.
    I'll try this too.
If you do not get help here or in Mac mini
Discussions, my only remaining suggestion is that you
take your Mac mini, iSight, and Firewire cable for a
professional check by your Apple Service Tech.
My nearest Apple Service Tech is over 50 miles away.
I'd prefer to find a fix here if I could.
    Thanks for your help,

  • ISight audio not available in boot camp?

    Hey everyone,
I'm running windows xp sp3 on my MBP17" just purely as a gaming side of things.
Anyway, I can't seem to get the audio from the isight mic available in any application.
I went to the audio setup in control panel and it only shows Realtek HD Audio input and Realtek HD digital input for the voice recording options.
Neither seem to be getting an audio signal when I talk.
Any ideas what I can do to get this working or am I out of luck?
The mic works fine in OS X. I have the latest bootcamp drivers and I'm running windows XP SP3 with the latest updates. The iSight camera works fine as a video device but no audio.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

never mind...fixed it myself by going into the realtek hd sound effects thing
    thanks though

  • Isight with another audio input?

I want to record a video with isight but with another audio input other than the built in microphone. I have tried changing the input in preferences - sound - input but that doesnt seem to apply with the audio in photo booth.

    (1) Yes, for many common problems, location really does matter, although I think not for this one.
    (2) Photo Booth is such a simple fun app that it offers few configuration options, although the latest version (Photo Booth 3.x) adds the ability to choose among connected cameras. However, there is still no menu choice that allows you to select among microphones. The only way I know to change mics is to change the system microphone in your Mac's System Preferences... > Sound > Input like you tried to do.
You do not say what sound input you want to use instead of your MacBook's internal microphone. I have tested my Photo Booth with my Apple LED Display, external iSight, and Logitech Desktop mics. All worked. Testing again after you shut down (not "Restart") your MacBook and then start it up again.
    (3) If you still have trouble, test with QuickTime instead of Photo Booth. QT lets you change the microphone source by clicking QT's Preferences disclosure triangle as shown in this image:
You Mac's choices will be different than those shown in the image, but any sound input source that is recognized by your Mac will be there. Any mic that works in QT should also work for Photo Booth when selected in your Mac's System Preferences... > Sound > Input. After selecting the mic, say a few words and watch the "Input level:" meter to check whether the mic is working.
After selecting your other microphone, the blue indicator lights in the sound check "Input level:" meter in Preferences should flicker when you talk. If they do, the mic should also work with Photo Booth.
    (4) If your alternate mic works with QT but still fails with Photo Booth, try resetting your Photo Booth preferences. If you have never done it, here is how:
     • Restart Mac
     • Navigate to the "com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist" file in your Home ( ) > Library > Preferences folder.
(Be sure you are in the Home Folder preferences folder, not your System's.)
     • Throw the "com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist" file in the Trash
     • Launch PB and test again.
    (5) If the PB problem persists, apply the 10.6.6 Combo Update using the following process:
      • Backup your Mac and turn off Time Machine
      • Disconnect peripherals and restart Mac
      • Use Disk Utility to repair permissions
      • Download and install http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349
      • Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that finishes the update.
      • Test PB again
(• Turn Time Machine on again when you are satisfied that the update worked.)

  • How can I get my audio input and output devices back? I have no sound and cannot see any of the devices in Audio MIDI Setup..??

Hi, I tried to set up a new output audio device on my mac that would have multiple outputs (iBox Twist speaker and my internal speaker) but when I went to click onto one of the iBox Twist (there were 2 options available: iBox Twist and iBox Twist Stereo), Audio MIDI Setup crashed and when I finally got that back open, I found that there were no audio input or output devices to be found. My sound is working, as when I turn on my iMac, the starting sound still plays, however the volume control in the menu bar is no longer a black colour, but grey and when I try to change the sound on my keyboard it does not change. This already happened to me once, and after 3 hours I managed to fix it very simply (switching off Mac, unplugging power cord, leaving for 15 seconds, plug power cord back in and switch Mac back on, holding Alt, Cmd, P and R keys until you hear the Starting Up sound twice) however this same technique that fixed it once before is not working this time and I am still stuck without sound. I have tried Repair Permissions, rebooting in Safe Mode, Hardware Test and checking for Software Updates. Has anyone else had this problem and managed to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me!

In case anyone has had the same problem as me, I have just managed to fix this by doing the following:
    Switch off Mac
Switch back on in Safe Mode (Hit power button, then hold Shift key until a loading bar appears at the bottom of the screen).
    Switch off Mac again
Remove power cord and wait 15 seconds
Plug power cord back in and hold down the keys alt, cmd, p, r all at the same time until you hear Starting chime for a second time and hopefully your audio will back.

I have an HP Pavilion dv9700 Notebook PC, Product LC329UA#ABA
There is no sound/audio input in jack, 2 headphone jacks instead
I want to hook up a device which uses the input in jack for my turntable
Have seen part 449763-001 described as Genuine HP Audio PCB + Cable for dv9000 series. Audio and infrared (IR) circuit board - Contains the IR receiver, microphone, line-in, and headphone jacks
Is this true, or is it the same board currently in my laptop with 2 headphone jacks?
If only 2 headphone jack board available, is there an alternative usb device that has an audio in jack I could use?

I recently discovered this and the fw800 is also gone. For audio, this will work http://store.griffintechnology.com/imic

  • After OS Upgrade, System Preferences won't recognize audio input/output.

When I got an iPhone, I had to upgrade to OS 10.5.8, as well as upgrade Safari (to 4.0.3) and iTunes (to 9.0.1) for everything to run smoothly, and it does.
However, since I went though the motions last week with these upgrades, System Preferences or Utilities doesn't want to recognize my audio input/output jacks. It won't recognize when I plug in my stereo or my headphones. I hook up my computer to my stereo all the time to listen to music in the living areas of my apartment, and now I can't because it isn't reading the jack.

I just installed a Sound blaster extreme gamer fatal1ty pro sound card. I've got it working but when I try to open Audition #.0, I get the error about audio input not activated. I can play but I can't record. when I try to, I get a message about the ASIO driver is invalid and change settings in audio hardware. When I go there, the option for input is greyed out. Consumer cards like the X-Fi/Audigy series from Creative Labs are not good choices for recording. They're great at gaming (I have an X-Fi on my game machine) and playing movies on your PC but for professional audio applications one needs a professional audio card.
