ISight built into iMac not recognised

My iSight was working fine for a year then suddenly ichat / photo booth / skype all stopped recognising it. They all say no camera connected.
I tried resetting Pram - this worked once then never again.
I tried resetting the power unit - again this worked once then never again.
I thought it might have been related to 10.4.10 update as it seemed to stop working around that time (although i didn't notice it). But install of Leopard didn't fix it either.
Any ideas anyone?

  • Help - iMac not recognising speakers

    Hi All,
I hope this is posted in the right place, if not my applogies.
I've got a 21" iMac from 2009. I've tried to hook up some speakers today (old Sony speakers from my PC) and the iMac doesn't recognise when they are plugged in to the Line Out port - however when I plug them in the headphone port they work fine…
How do I get the iMac to recognise the speakers through the Line Out port? Is there any difference between plugging them in to the Line Out port and just plugging them in to the headphone port?
They worked fine on the PC and I'm puzzled…
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Adam

I believe that the port on the back of your iMac that you think is "Line-Out" is actually an "Audio in / optical digital audio in" port.
Therefore there is no sound coming out of it.
There is no reason why you shouldn't be totally happy using the Headphone jack for your Sony speakers.

  • IMac not recognising iPad2 or iPhone

Whenever i plug my iPhone 4s or iPad2 into the USB and ocnnect it to my iMAc, the iMac won't recognise it.
Nothing at all happens - it will only charge. Usualy iTunes or iPhoto will open up and recognise my device, but not now.
I am running the latest software, I've tried restarting all my devices- but nothing works.
It must be an iMac issue, I'm running iTunes 10.5.3 which is the latest.
    Can anyone help?

OK, let's try a couple of resets it's possible they may work. Do each reset 2x please.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After you have completed both resets 2x then re-open iTunes with one of the devices (iPhone or iPad) connected and see if they show up in Devices. If not you now know how to show or hide them. If they still don't show up then re-tread the support assistant steps per the link I provided in my last post. If they still don't show up you will need to call AppleCare or visit your local Apple Store or AASP for some help.
BTW have you tried different cables & USB ports to eliminate a connection problem.

  • IMac not recognising Sandisk 16GB SDHC card

    Hello everyone
having real difficulty downloading to iMovie content from my Canon Vixia HF100. The Sandisk VideoHD card I purchased will not under any circumstances be recognised by my iMac running 10.5.5. I even purchased a dedicated SDHC reader, but still to no avail. The only way, and then after much messing about, to get the video off the card is to directly connect the camera to the computer.
Has there been any issues with this card that anyone knows of? Should I go back to a standard 16GB SDHC card?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

"The only way, and then after much messing about, to get the video off the card is to directly connect the camera to the computer."
    That is the recommended procedure.

  • IMac not recognising connected mouse

Hi just to clarify the previous post. The imac was previously connected to a wireless mouse. This was replaced with a wired mouse (too battery hungry!). All was fine for 2 months before suddenly an error which said "your apple wireless mouse may turn itself off at any time. Replace or recharge batteries ASAP. " As the mouse does not allow clicking I am stuck on the home page which loads on start. Is there a way via keyboard command or other to get to try and disable the recognition of this wireless mouse - which incidentally was disposed of 2 months ago.

    It's fixed itself thanks

    • Use Disk Utility to repair permissions and then

  • IMac not recognising Install disk

My late 2006 iMac wont recoginse my restore disks, ive recently fitted it with a new HDD as the other on failed, i formatted it as Mac Journaled and it will only recognise 10.5 upgrade disk, the problem is, i need to put 10.4 on to upgrade, what shall i do?

Make sure the disk is REALLY clean. No smudges or scratches. If that doesn't help you should be able to order a replacement set from Apple.

  • Imac not recognising firewire HD

I have a LaCie external hard disk and I've connected it via firewire but it's not seeing the disk. It used to work fine when I had it connected via USB to my airport express but I need the firewire connection to do a full (and faster) backup. Any ideas? Thanks.

Have you tried resetting the Firewire port and the PRAM? See these two articles if you don't know how:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
If it doesn't work, check LaCie's website to find out if you have the latest firmware for their drive. If you do, e-mail LaCie support and tell them of your problem. Their e-mail address is firewire AT lacie.com.

  • IMac not recognising external drives or memory cards

    Hi,
I've been using both a Lacie external drive and a standard SD card from transferring files and images on my computer for ages, with no problems. I have two issues, possibly related, possibly not.
    1) I accidentally removed my Lacie drive before it had properly ejected the other day. The message that I had done so popped up on the screen so I plugged it back in, (as the Mac will usually fix this when it happens) and it never opened up in my finder. Tried restarting machine, but it still cannot even see the drive. It's an old external drive, and was backed up, so I put the problem down to that and almost forgot about it.
    2) Today I plugged in the SD card from my camera to transfer some images. After the transfer, I ejected the card correctly, then reinserted it to do a last job. Again, nothing in the finder. It's like neither of the devices are even there.
I've checked finder preferences to make sure that I can see external hard drives - this is on.
I've done the old fashioned restart too. No luck either way.
An additional point is that my BACKUP drive IS visible in finder.
    Any ideas?
I'm worried now that I shouldn't plug in any external drives, especially my work ones, just in case there is something seriously wrong.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I have an imac G5 with iSight built in. My iMovie HD 5.0.2 does not recognise my iSight. iSight works fine with Photo Booth and in iChat (video preview, I've not actually used ichat for real). For the Internet, you should set up a router on your modem, this router will route the packets to any device on the local area network.
If you use the iMac as a router, like if you connect the Ethernet cable from your modem to the iMac, then broadcast a Wifi signal, the iMac will have to remain on all the time, at full power. Thus drastically shortening it's lifespand.
A router is only about $100 or so, offers much better security as it's like a large guard, someone has to hack through router first to get your iMac or other devices.
If it breaks, you buy another 5 years later for another $100, so your not placing all that always on wear and tear on your expensive iMac.
Apple's airport routers are pretty good, easy to set up and have automatic firmware updates, plus music sharing etc.
Set up properly you will be very secure
WiFi security issues, at home and WiFi hotspots

  • First time starting up iMac, USB keyboard not recognised

i have tried to set-up my imac, however the keyboard is not recognised and says that i have to turn on my bluetooth keyboard when i have  a USB keyboard and it will not go on to the next step.

    Hi manocchio1994,
Thanks for contacting the Apple Support Communities. I understand your keyboard is not recognized when connecting if for the first time and I know how frustrating that can be. There is a fantastic article available for USB keyboard troubleshooting I would recommend.
None of the keys on my keyboard work
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1996
Troubleshooting your Apple USB Keyboard Step-by-Step
If your keyboard keys still aren't working after trying the steps in USB Basic Troubleshooting, try these steps, in order, until you've come to a resolution.
    ▪ Unplug all devices from your computer, including your mouse and keyboard, as well as your printer, scanner, cameras, iPod, external hard drives, and hubs. (Warning: Some devices, like iPods, may require you to perform steps before it is safe to unplug them.) If you have a hub, don't forget to unplug it as well.
    ▪ Plug your keyboard and mouse back into your computer firmly and securely. Take special care to make sure that the connector is completely in the port. (USB plugs fit into ports one way only, and won't plug in if you try to plug them in upside-down.)
    ▪ If that still doesn't work, try plugging your keyboard in to the other USB ports. Be sure to try them all. Check to see if the keyboard's Caps Lock light turns on when you press it, and try typing in one of your applications, such as TextEdit.
    ▪ If your keyboard works in one of your USB ports but not all, your computer may need service to resolve an issue with its USB port or ports.
If your keyboard doesn't work in any of your computer's USB ports, it appears that your keyboard isn't functioning properly and needs to be replaced. You can order this part online. Order a replacement keyboard.
If needed, I suggest resetting the System Management Controller as well. Those steps can be found in the following section of this article.
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

    Thanks for reaching out,

  • Imac USB not recognised

Hi everyone, my iMac does not recognise anything I plug into the USB- not my Garmin, nor Kindle, not even a USB memory stick. I have tried everything, it just doesn't see it! Anybody got any ideas? Thanking you in advance. karen

Could be simple Finder preferences causing you to not see drives on the desktop. By default, later versions of the Mac OS present an overly-clean Desktop by hiding all drives. I give this "feature" a rating of:
    1) Make sure you are in the Finder ("Finder" appears next to the black Apple icon at the left end of your menubar).
    2) select "Preferences" from the Finder menu and make sure the "General" tab is active
    3) Check all the boxes at the top of that tab:
Now any mounted drive of server will appear on the Desktop. Not as pretty as the default but much better if you actually use the computer!
