ISight camera not showing

Haven't Skyped for a while but client has asked me to get set up, so have ditched all older and out-of-date versions. All the video tutorials show simple option to video chat as soon as I've found friends and contacts but I'm only offered phone numbers from my mac contacts and address book - no little camera icon ready to videoskype with. Do I have to wait for my Skype ID to be verified? (24hrs from new account set up apparently) Anyone able to help?
Tech Specs:
I have a late 2008 Macbook 2GHz Intelcore 2 Duo running 4GB RAM
Graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256MB
Running OX10.7.5 Lion
I've downloaded Skype version 6.3 which is the right one for my mac and o/s and have plenty of free space, so all system requirements met.
Any help gratefully received, many thanks

Same problem here.
It used to work, but now all of a sudden it's no longer an option.

iMovie '08: Built-in iSight camera not recognized
    it says:
    In Finder, navigate to /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/
Select the file com.apple.mio.VDCAssistant.plist and delete.
    Restart your system.
You should now be able to use your iSight camera with iMovie.
However, in Yosemite, it only has this file name
    com.apple.cmio.VDCAssistant.plist
and I don't want to delete it as instructed without someone who knows telling me it won't hurt my newly installed and thus far working well OS 10.10.1, with iMovie 7.1.4 on my iMac 24 inch, Early 2008, 2.8 GHz Intel Dore 2 Duo, 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2  SDRAM.  It worked with Leopard, and I don't recall having to use the above mentioned support page.

Contact Apple. I believe you have a hardware issue there if it's not showing up in your System profiler.

    * just shutting down my computer and taking the battery out for several hours
    any Help pls
because i mast to use it as soon as possible in a conference

    *A few suggestions.........*
Try running repair permissions from your HD and afterwards run +repair disk+ from your software install DVD.

To fix your iSight, shut down computer. Reboot in safe mode (press power button and then hold shift key down). After computer boots, restart again. Hopefully, your iSight will start working again.

    Welcome to Discussions, radarina
The restart was a the best first step.
Next, try all relevant suggestions from:

If your iSight problem still occurs in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested there often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
However, if your built-in iSight still does not work after carefully following all the suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, and if iSight does not show as a USB hardware device in your Mac's System Profiler, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
We will watch for your status update.

  • Built in isight camera not working with flash

My built in isight camera on my macbook works just fine in photobooth and in skype or ichat.. but just in the past week or so, it will not work when im on websites that use flash. I've seen some threads that say that I need to go into settings and make sure that the camera chosen is the USB. When i go into flash settings, the only options are Google1, Google2, or Built in isight. It doesn't work with any of them. Does anyone have any idea how I can make it work again?

Your problem is not the same as that posted by the OP, and your system info shows you using Mac OS X (10.5.6).
For your symptoms with this system, I suggest you do the following:
    (1) Apply the 10.5.8 Combo Update using the following process:
      • Backup your Mac and turn off Time Machine
      • Disconnect peripherals and restart Mac
      • Use Disk Utility to repair permissions
      • Download and install
       http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
      • Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that finishes the update.
      • Test whether Flash works for you now.
(• Turn Time Machine on later when you are satisfied that the update worked.)
    (2) After applying the 10.5.8 Combo, if you are still having problems, download and install the latest Flash player compatible with your system:
      http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/
Also check any other third-party browser plugins or other add ons. Apply all available updates and uninstall any third-party items that are known to be incompatible with your system.

  • (Slow Network): iSight camera not working in iChat since Leopard upgrade

I have a different type of iChat video issue. My Power Mac G4, 867 MHz, 1 GB DRAM is a supported Mac for the Leopard upgrade. I've successfully installed OS 10.5.
Also my Power Mac meets the iChat Conferencing Requirements for 1-on-1 Video Chat per the OS 10.5 system requirements and the application note here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301050
My iSight camera is connected via Firewire to an Apple Cinema Display, which feeds back to the Power Mac G4.
    1) When I boot from my 10.3.9 Carbon Copy Cloner backup my iSight works in iChat (at least locally to see myself) without any issue. Green light comes on and shows me locally on video and audio sound bars. Before the OS upgrade the iSight worked fine for live video conferences with iChat 2.1.3 under Mac OS 10.3.9
    2) Running OS 10.5 when I go to iChat 4.0's preferences video pane the following message is waiting "This computer does not support video conferencing."
    3) With Leopard iChat 4.0 the Connector Doctor under "capabilities" says "(Slow Network)" for 1-on-1 Video Chat and won't even show video locally or turn on the iSight's green light.

    Fixed!
My Power Mac Quicksilver G4, 867 MHz. problem with (Slow Network) in the iChat Connection Doctor, no video preview or video iChat since upgrading to OS 10.5 Leopard and iChat 4.0 has been solved with the following posted towards the end of the thread below. I can finally see my video preview with iChat 4.0 and have also video chatted successfully with one other user.

  • Isight camera "not connected" but IS in USB configuration

My iSight [BUILT-IN] camera keeps being reported as "There is no camera connected" in 'Photo Booth', though it Does show up in the USB configuration of System Profiler, and most times still functions OK using Google Video Chat. (for the first 'known' time, it did not work for Google this past week)
So far, resetting the SMC has corrected the problem, but only for a few hours.
Is there a COMMAND I can give the MacBook to do what the SMC "fixes"?
Why is it being controlled by "System Preferences - Other - Flash Player"   instead of "Hardware"??  It seems that I Can Not just set it to "Block" because this also asks if I want Google Mail to be "allowed", which is my video chat method.
There are NO other users (a TEST account is set up for when I sent it to Apple last year, but that is Not Used); I simply would like to sometimes run Photo Booth to image the room or do a new profile pic, but this Constant Problem stops that.

  • External iSight Camera not working after update installed?

a couple of weeks ago I turned on iChat and up popped a window that said i needed to update the (external) iSight camera i had plugged into my minimac (firewire). followed the instructions and did just that. little greenlight glowed happily, rotated lens and opened iChat--little green light blinked off and then iChat showed that the camera was not turned on. tried turning it on and off by rotating the lens, unplugging firewire and also restarted computer...no change. looked for update to firmware and downloaded 1.0.3, only to be told it does not work with OS 10.4 (bummer).
had a back up camera, plugged that in and no problems...trouble is roomate recently got the pop-up screen when he was using it and, thinking he was doing me a favor, 'updated'...so now have 2 cameras that do not work and no answers to be found on the posts or the apple support site.
    any ideas?

    (1) Assuming you are not ANY having other problems with your Macs and that your Mac OS X Maintenance is up to date, you can concentrate on the iSight part of your system(s).
Restart your Mac with no unnecessary peripherals connected and try the suggestions here:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93240
    (2) If your iSight still does not work with any app, check for Possible hardware or software conflicts with iSight.
    (3) I cannot tell whether your mini is an iNtel or PPC. Apply the appropriate Combo Updater as follows if you still have the problem:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • For PPC, download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update (PPC).
    • For iNtel, download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update v1.1 (Intel).
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
    (4) If your problem persists after trying all of the above, the problem may be with your iSight itself. The fact that you got that notification after you had previously been using your iSight successfully under OS 10.4.x, and the fact that the updater ran for you and your roommate under OS 10.4.x, makes me think there may be something wrong with your iSights. The Tiger (10.4.x) OS includes all the necessary earlier update (including iSight Firmware 1.0.3) and installs the Firmware update if necessary at the time you installed Tiger or first connected your iSight. Therefore, the Firmware update should be unnecessary and should not have been identified by Software Update... as being needed (unless someone has improperly thrown away some OS X files.)
As you note, iSight Firmware 1.0.3 will not run except on Mac OS X v10.3.7-10.3.9 (or, it now seems, if something is wrong.) If you have access to a Firewire-equipped Mac that is using one of these OSs, you can try applying the update to your iSights using that Mac.
    (5) If you cannot find a Mac that is still using Panther, or if applying the update does not resolve your problem, contact your Apple Authorized Service Provider for professional service. Ask your AASP if he wants to see your Macs, too, to check whether their software has been modified or damaged.

  • Macbook Retina Display isight camera not working - graphics freeze

I recently bought a base MBP-RD and can say that I am overall impressed with it, though I have found a couple issues already. One of them is related to the iSight camera which for some reason doesn't work. The camera appears in system profiler, but it shows as "camera not detected" when trying to launch application like iChat, Skype, FaceTime, etc. I already tried re-installing OSX Lion, and still not working.
I have also found some weird issue with graphics where it freezes a series of frames when going to Mission Control or App Expose.
I am returning this computer as there are other things I didn't like, but overall pretty impressive (no LED battery indicator, no Lock slot, no sleep light indicator...)
Please reply if you have same issue.

i think Macbook Pro is a good computer but plenty of issues, since day one.
i received my computer with space bar cracked. i figured this out @ night when the keyboard backlight was.
then my USB port ***** on it, it does not read all.
even after the update no go the USB port does not  work all the time with the apple usb to ethernet adapter.
while if i install vmware it does work on the windows in VMware environement.
my Camera also is not being detected    how can i fix the camera.
please do not tell me go to genius bar, they are all but not genius, if you have issue they ask you to format they do not know how to troubleshoot.
Conclusion problem with macbok retina version:
    isight Camera wont detect
USB port Does not work with all devices.
Space Bar key broken from manufacture.

  • ISight camera not working with Myspace Karaoke

Hi guys! I searched the forum and couldn't seem to find anything on this...I'm trying to upload an audition for Glee on Myspace using my iSight camera. The audio seems to be recording fine, but when I try to play back what I've just recorded there is no video. I checked the settings and everything seems to be connected fine but it's still not working. Any idea why this is happening or what I can do to fix it? Thanks so much!

    Hi,
A look here show me the Video shown is Flash based.
This would make me guess that the Record feature is also Flash based.
This should give you access to a Settings panel that you will have to tick the Allow Box and possibly select the camera from as well (icon to the lower right)

  • ISight Camera not working with Skype

    Hi,
2 days ago my kids were skyping and everything was fine, then I turned off my iMac and the next day Skype wouldn't use my iSight Camera. In the settings it shows that it is using the iSight Camera but not picture! I made an update from skype but it didnt help. I restarted my computer, reinstalled skype nothing.
I am not a big pro with computers, so if you have an explanation, PLEASE be detailed in your explanation.
    Thanks
    Lucy

I know this is an older thread BUT I've been dealing with this issue for the past four days and this is what I found... (perhaps if it helps another person....)
Assuming you've already checked while on a Skype video call that your camera isn't turned off...
    FIRSTLY
Open Skype Preferences to verify your settings.
(prob in your downloads, applications folder or on your desktop)
Then at the top your screen, next to the Apple Icon you should see Skype:
Select Skype, then scroll down to Preferences.  Verify settings.
(Mine, for example, under the "Calls" Tab was set to autoanswer so I can check on
my dogs while away and tell them to get off the couch!)
    SECONDLY
Make sure another apple app isn't hijacking your camera.
Open Finder, Devices, Applications, then look for IChat
Once open, Select iChat and scroll down to preferences.
(For my settings, I don't use IChat SO I changed the "default IM application" to Skype,
    under General settings tab.)
    Select the green Audio/Video Tab
and uncheck "Open IChat when external camera is on"
    THIRDLY
I verified that all other Apps using the camera weren't open.  My insight camera worked
when I opened Photobooth,  IChat, Facetime and ICamSource (a monitoring program)
    - just didn't work with Skype!
From Desktop, go to Apple Icon, select "Force Quit Finder", then scroll down and
close everything that uses the camera.
    FINALLY
From Desktop, go to Apple Icon and select Restart (pic same as above).
Upon restarting, once the screen blanks out hold down the following keys all at once:
Option, Command and P and R keys.
For me, I heard the computer "restart song" chime twice before letting go.
    (PRAM and NVRAM settings)
    http://http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
I tried a Skype video call from an Iphone to Mac Desktop and it went through just fine!

  • HT1338 internal camera not showing up on MacBook Air

The internal camera is not showing up on my MacBook Air in either Photobooth or Facetime

    • If Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
suggestions do not help you, (the "reset" suggested there
often restores normal function,) continue with the following.
    • Use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions and then
download and apply the latest Combo Update.  For ML Mac OS,
the current one is at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1581
    • Repair permissions again immediately following the system restart
       that completes the Combo update.
Properly applying the Combo version of updates can sometimes correct software problems, but, if your trouble is caused by a hardware problem, there are no user serviceable parts of the camera.  For hardware help, contact an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
(Apple has changed the built-in camera's name on newer Macs from "iSight" to "FaceTime" and then to "FaceTime HD."  Regardless of the name of your Mac's built-in camera, the same info and troubleshooting applies.)

  • USB/DirectShow camera not showing in NI-MAX

I've got a Point Grey Chameleon CMLN-13S2M USB 2.0 camera and it is not showing up in NI-MAX.
I'm well aware of the Directshow registration problems with the PGR cameras, and as far as I can tell the camera is properly registered.  It shows up with no problems in AMCAP, a simple Directshow viewer, and also in Skype.
I just uninstalled the PGR drivers and spent a while going through the registry to delete all references I could to Point Grey and PGR.  I then reinstalled the 32 bit version of the latest drivers, v2.5 beta 2.  I also upgraded the camera firmware to the latest.
    I'm running
    Labview 2012 SP1 f2, 12.0.1
    Vision development module 12.1.0
    MAX 5.4.0f0
    NI-IMAQ 4.7.2
    NI-IMAQdx 4.1.0
Any ideas?  This is a side project and I've been working on it off and on now for more than a year and I've got to get this camera working.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Yes, I still see the camera with other DirectShow viewers after the reinstall.  The latest Point Grey drivers give the option to register the directshow drivers during the installation.  I assumed that this worked since the camera shows up with the other DirectShow viewers, but I also manually registered the files according to the instructions in your links just in case.
I believe that a year or more ago ago when I was running an old version of LV (2009, I think) it did show up in MAX.  I had upgraded a few of the LV components piecemeal, but when my university upgraded to 2012 I decided to uninstall and reinstall with the latest versions of everything.  I have never seen it listed in MAX, red x or not, since I uninstalled the old version to upgrade.
I have used a camera from a different company and it worked fine.
I found that the 32bit directshow cameras are listed in the registry at
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{860BB310-5D01-11d0-BD3B-00A0C911CE86}\Instance
and I verified this by modifiying the "FriendlyName" registry key for the camera that does show up and observing that the name changes in MAX.  The point grey camera is listed here in the registry but does not show up in MAX.
