Isight Camera Off

OK, gang, sorry if this question is a repeated one, but I went through 7 of the 33 pages and failed to find a helpful answer, so here's my problem.
The first time I plugged my camera in and turned on ichat, then hit the video I was amazed at how trouble free and simple it worked. I recently moved my computer from one room to another, plugged everything in the same except now when I open Ichat and hit the video there is no picture and just a black screen that says "Camera Off". Any ideas how I turn the damned camera back on again? I tried plugging it into a couple of different slots and no go. Anyone else solve this problem?

Well answered, Ted! +++
(Gregor, the answer is in your iSight Users Guide (Manual). If you can't find yours, you can download a current one from http://images.apple.com/support/isight/iSightUserGuide.pdf.)
Happy Holidays to you both!

  • MacBook built-in iSight camera off center

    Hi Folks,
Is there any way to re-align the built in iSight camera on a MacBook? In order to be centered in the image, I have to turn my MacBook about 8 or 9 degrees to the left. If I am sitting directly in front of the camera, I am off-center. Any help is appreciated. My girlfriend and I both have MacBooks, and her camera appears to be aligned properly.

Barring some unusual circumstance, there should be no need to disable your built-in iSight because YOU decide when to use your iSight.
Some apps such as iChat allow you to enable and disable the webcam from menu commands.
Other apps such as Photo Booth only use the camera when you click the button.
However, if you REALLY want to disable, scripts like this one can easily disable and enable iSight.
      http://techslaves.org/index.php?page=62
However, be aware that it simultaneously disables ALL USB webcams when active.
Although I do not recommend it, you can manually disable your built-in iSight by removing the "QuickTimeUSBVDCDIgitizer.component" file from your computer's HardDriveName > System > Library > QuickTime folder and restarting your Mac. Your built-in iSight should no longer work with any app.
P.S. Manually moving, renaming, or deleting files outside your Username/Documents folder
is generally a BAD idea unless you KNOW how it will effect OS X.

  • ISight cam on, but Monitor off ?

    Hi guys,
tried looking for this question in the forums and nothing...
I currently use a Macbook Pro and the latest version of Mac OS X. I also have the Macbook Pro connected to the Flat HD TV.
My question is: How can I turn off the Monitor on the Macbook and be able to use the iSight Cam during video chat.
Currently, the Macbook Pro is open and both monitor and TV shows the same video. To save monitor life, I would like to turn this off but keep the cam on..
    Thanks

Found my own answer at MacForums.
    here's how to do it..
Close your macbook - it goes to sleep, make sure the power adaptor is plugged in.
    wait 5 seconds,
with a wire or wireless keyboard press any keys and wait about 5 sec. The Mac should wake up and show the monitor screen on the external monitor.
After 1 minute, you could open the Macbook Pro monitor cover and the monitor should stay turned off. Allowing you to use the iSight cam with the monitor off and saving the life of the monitor.
Hope this helps other people who's been trying to do this too.

  • ISight Camera not working and green light won't cut off

Ok, so I used to use macs all the time (exclusively) then I left for a few years, and now that I am back I have had a great experience so far except for this oddity...
I have no idea why but all of the sudden my little green light beside my built-in isight camera won't go away, I am not even trying to use it in any application. When I do, however, try to use it in photobooth for example it yields nothing but blackness. So, to troubleshoot I figured I'd try two things:
Re-installing Mac OS X from scratch using the CDs that came with it (no big loss, I wanted to customize the installation anyways)
Reset the SMC (I am used to resetting PRAM and stuff like that, so it's been a while for me)
Both of those have yielded no change.
I would have searched the forums for answers but apparently that feature has been turned off temporarily to help "improve support", or something I read rather quickly earlier lol
So I call upon you, Mac Geniuses, to please come to my aid...surely there is something else I can do to fix the isight on my macbook. I just got it, granted I got it refurbished from Apple, I expected nothing less than top notch from Apple as they have always delivered before.
Thanks in advance for any help!!
    -Joshua

Ok, my mistake...When I went to reset the SMC I noticed when I upgraded the memory the retention bar that holds things *around the battery, I guess* into place wasn't in there the way it should be, the metal tab wasn't in it's little slot, so I fixed that error, then went on with the procedure and then no more problem
I'm an idiot, Apple rules, I'll be the first to admit it LOL
    Have a great day!

  • Isight camera wont turn off

My isight camera was working fine, then all of a sudden i went to take a picture with photo booth and the photo booth screen where i would show up is all green. I tried restarting and shutting down but it wont work, i dont have the any applications open for the camera and the light by the camera is green indicating that its on. I dont know how to turn it off.

I had a similar problem with my iMac when I first got it.
Have you installed 3rd party RAM? If I remember correctly, that was my problem. Replaced it and everything worked fine.

  • How do I turn off the iSight camera?

I've checked earlier discussions here on this and am not getting help with my specific question. The problem is that periodically, seemingly randomly, I notice that the iSight camera is on. At the moment it appears that no iSight-using application is running. How in that situation do I turn the camera off.
And while I'm at it, it's occurred to me in the past that someone/something else has got control of my camera. Is that possible? I mean, they're not gonna get anything very interesting on me, but thought that that could be what's going on is a little unsettling.
    Thanks.

    Hey Eric,
These guys are correct in that Skype, Linphone, FaceTime, Google+ and many other conference or chat programs / apps will turn on your built-in iSight or FaceTime camera if it is available.
You may want to read https://discussions.apple.com/message/22752712#22752712
Just keep in mind if you disable it with permissions,  simply running the disk-utility "Repair disk permissions" will make the camera work again.
If you are able to use the terminal program with root privilege enter the following lines using Mac OSX 10.6
    chmod 000 /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreMediaIOServices.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/VDC.plugin/Contents/MacOS/VDC
    chmod 000 /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreMediaIOServicesPrivate.framework/Versions /A/Resources/VDC.plugin/Contents/MacOS/VDC
    chmod 000 /System/Library/QuickTime/QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer.component/Contents/MacOS/Qui ckTimeUSBVDCDigitizer
    Or these if at 10.8
    chmod 000 /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreMediaIO.framework/Versions/A/Resources/VDC.plugi n/Contents/MacOS/VDC
    chmod 000 /System/Library/QuickTime/QuickTimeUSBVDCDigitizer.component/Contents/MacOS/Qui ckTimeUSBVDCDigitizer
    chmod 000 /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/CoreMediaIOServices.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/VDC.plugin/Contents/MacOS/VDC
To make it work again you can change the 000 to 755 and run the commands or simply run the Disk permissions repair.

  • ISight Camera clicks off when activated

I have been using my iSight camera for several years. Recently, whenever I turn it on, the little green light comes on indicating the camera is in use. But, almost immediately I hear a click and the camera goes off. If I disconnect the firewire cable for a minute and then reconnect it, the light will come on again, but once again, it will click off. I believe the clicking is a thermal overload switch in the camera. Does anyone else have this problem and can it be repaired at a reasonable cost?

  • ISight camera turns off 1 second after starting

When the iSight camera turns on (green light turns on) it stays on for one or two seconds and then goes pssst and turns off. Audio chat works but Video Conferencing does not. Interesting to note that the iChatAV thinks the camera is attached. iSights (we have two) both work with 10.4.2 on other computers but not on any of our computers running 10.4.3. Have already downloaded the update to QuickTime. Any ideas?

If your iSight does not work with any of the tests suggested in How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional, have it professionally checked by an Apple Service Technician.
If your iSight worked for iChat AV video chats before the 10.4.3 upgrade, try the suggestions in Help for iChat AV 3 Problems.

  • Mid 2009 13" MBP iSight camera bad picture quality in photo booth

My daughter's stock mid 2009 13" MBP 2.26 ghz intel core two duo has a problem with the isight camera. The isight camera is built in to the screen. The isight camera works some of the time flawlessly and other times it comes out real grainy and with small colored pixels all over the screen like colored static (about 20% to 30% of the photo booth screen is affected but the rest of the screen outside of the photo booth app is unaffected). She only uses it in photo booth but we've tried the iChat app and the same thing happens there too, once she couldn't get the MBP to connect to the isight camera (it just showed a black photo booth screen), so she closed the lid of her MBP and reopened it and it worked. All of the software and firmware is up to date and we've tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC, it didn't do anything to fix the problem. It seems like there's a wire loose in the computer from the screen to the computer base, only because I can move the screen back and forth and the picture quality changes, the amount of static on the picture will move, go away or get worse. I had the screen changed in early 2010 (January or February) (the MBP was about 5 or 6 months old then) at the apple store under warranty due to dirt under the screen's glass (manufacturing defect). The photo booth picture static problem comes and goes, but here lately it comes more than it goes. The screen in general is in good shape and doesn't have any detectable problems with it, it has a good picture and no dead pixels, the problem seems to be only isolated to the isight camera. Can some one help with this problem? How long of a warranty is given on the warranty repairs (like the screen change they did in early 2010)? If apple does a repair on it and finds a wire that has rubbed the insulation off of it on a hinge causing a short and the isight problem, as a result of a sloppy repair from the first warranty repair, will they cover it under warranty again even if it's been over a year since they changed the screen? Also how honest will apple be if they do find out it is a problem caused from the first screen replacement, will they own up to their mistake? If I don't agree with apple's repair decision, can I get a second opinion from an outside source, third party, and if it's diagnosis different than apple's and can be proven, can I still get apple to do and pay for the repairs and labor if it turns out to be their fault from the first warranty screen replacement?
The reason why I'm asking is, I took my wife's white macbook in about a year ago for the famous cracked top cover replacement (under warranty) and when I got the computer back, the isight camera didn't work, so I gave it back, they took it apart a look at it and said there was nothing wrong with it and gave it back, then the screen wouldn't come on so after 4 hours at the Apple store they decided to send it to Austin, TX. for repairs (I'm in Ft. Worth TX.). Apple in Austin said it needed a new main board. They said the old one had water damage to it. We never had water anywhere near the computer, not even in the same room. It was working fine when we took it in, we took it in just to get the plastic top case, that cracks all of the time, replaced under warranty. And then they wanted us to pay for an $800 main board because some how while they were doing the top cover replacement it got water damaged. I argued with them and they finally gave me a one-time offer of them paying for half of the repair and labor or if I disagreed or left the store I would have to pay the whole amount if I chose to have the repairs done. So I ended up having to pay $467 for a year old macbook main board that was water damaged in their possession during their repairs. I like Apple and their products but I am worried about giving my daughter's MBP over to them for repairs because of this incident, it's an honesty issue with how honest they will be with what they find because they won't give back the old parts for analysis by a third party to verify their diagnosis.
Thanks for any info and advice anyone can give.

    Hi,
As a personal note I find long posts like this hard to read if they are not broken up in to paragraphs.
As I say it is  a personal thing.
I can give you some information about the camera and laptops over the past few years.
Basically in early Laptops of the MacBook Pro and MacBook range the cable did tend to fray at the point where it passed through the hinge.  It did take a well used laptop that had the lid open and closed frequently to cause this.  (your 2009 model might just be in that group - I have no firm dates or models I am afraid)
Later models have this rerouted so that this does not happen.
However the cable has then tended to get pulled from the camera end and become loose.
This On Line Self fix site has pages about some models  (The one I have linked to may not be yours)
I have linked in to later pictures in the sequence but there are navigation points to work back to the start.
Note:- they use pretty specifc specialest tools as well in these pics.
Doing this would certail Void any Warranty you have left.
From Posts mainly in the iChat and the iSight areas I have gathered that it seems common for Apple to replace the Screen as a whole rather than fiddle with getting solely at the camera.
Apple has this article on Trouble Shooting an iSight
Basically it says try several apps then try logging in on another Mac User account to see if it is App based or User based or in fact System wide.
If System wide then resetting the SMC/PMU is the only suggested fix.  (Which I did read you had done)
In addition to that I would add that testing should be done in different lighting conditions.
Lighting in the evening or dark that is good enough to read buy is not always good enough for the camera or is not illuminating the right areas.
Some people have reported that Starting the computer in Safe Mode (then Rebooting afterwards) seems to help.  (it clears out some caches and starts up with reduced extensions)
As to actual Repairs and any Warranty that may still be in place I cannot say.
I can say that when people post about problems with repairs a certain stores someone else will tend to post that their experience was different.
You seem to report two different experiences with the two computers yourself.

  • Built in isight camera not working with flash

My built in isight camera on my macbook works just fine in photobooth and in skype or ichat.. but just in the past week or so, it will not work when im on websites that use flash. I've seen some threads that say that I need to go into settings and make sure that the camera chosen is the USB. When i go into flash settings, the only options are Google1, Google2, or Built in isight. It doesn't work with any of them. Does anyone have any idea how I can make it work again?

Your problem is not the same as that posted by the OP, and your system info shows you using Mac OS X (10.5.6).
For your symptoms with this system, I suggest you do the following:
    (1) Apply the 10.5.8 Combo Update using the following process:
      • Backup your Mac and turn off Time Machine
      • Disconnect peripherals and restart Mac
      • Use Disk Utility to repair permissions
      • Download and install
       http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
      • Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that finishes the update.
      • Test whether Flash works for you now.
(• Turn Time Machine on later when you are satisfied that the update worked.)
    (2) After applying the 10.5.8 Combo, if you are still having problems, download and install the latest Flash player compatible with your system:
      http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/
Also check any other third-party browser plugins or other add ons. Apply all available updates and uninstall any third-party items that are known to be incompatible with your system.
