Isight causes Time Machine to stall

Hi everyone,
I've been struggling since getting Leopard to get Time Machine running. It has run intermittently for me, but usually just starts backing up and stalling after a period of time. I seem to have found a fix I thought I would post for other people struggling with this problem--if you have an old, external isight camera, disconnect it! It doesn't matter if it's actually "on" or not.
I realized that I used to have a similar problem with Carbon Copy Cloner, and taking the isight off fixed it in that instance, as well. I should point out that this problem has occurred across two different iMacs, so it's not likely a weird fluke. Something about the camera interferes with the backup process.
Cheers!
Tony

Good info, Tony!
If you are using a Firewire hard drive as your Time Machine backup device, my guess is that you are experiencing a Firewire conflict with your external iSight.
I am using one of my internal drives on my tower Mac for my Time Machine backups, and I do NOT share your problem while my external iSight is connected. Time Machine backups do pause while my iSight is active, but backups proceed normally with my iSight connected and on, even when iChat is open and connected to my iSight.
External (Firewire) iSight users who must use external drives for Time Machine backup might want to choose a USB drive as their backup device if they do not want to turn Time Machine backups off while their iSights are connected. Doing so would likely eliminate problem you experience.
Cheers,
EZ Jim

  • New unibody macbook pro time machine backup stalling/stalls

I have been using time machine to back up my Macbook Pro 17 (First Gen), I have 2 external Western Digital Drives connected via USB in a RAID (Striped) Configuration. Everything has worked fine for months and the backups are quite snappy...
I just changed to a NEW Unibody Macbook Pro 17 and formatted the drives, set up the RAID configuration again from fresh in disk utility and reset Time Machine and said OK when it requested to use the drive for backups.
The process gets some way into backing up... sometimes 7GB, 13GB, 17GB even 70GB and then just stops. The hard drives(at least one of them anyway i cant tell exactly) spin down and the file count in Time Machine window just stops. There is no error message and the window just stays there saying its backing up but there is no external HD activity. I have to cancel the backup (which sometimes - but not always - causes everything to stall until i unplug the drives by whipping the USB cable out). Everything then works fine i dont need to restart and it just brings up an error message saying that Time Machine failed to backup...
    Any ideas??
I do have antivirus software installed (VirusScan) but i have had that on my previous machine aswell so it cant be that...

I have a MacBook C2Duo (black 2008) customer who has upgraded to 10.5.7 with a new internal and external hard disk and a fresh install of the OS. After doing this, Time Machine constantly stalled at 12.55 GB when backing up to an external disk (USB2). After a lot of reading on the net, I think the problem marks the re-emergence of an old bug where the mdworker task used by Spotlight to index drives is crashing and starting to take up to 99% of the CPUs. At this point, TM simply does not have enough CPU time to work and crawls almost to a halt.
I messed around for a while with Activity Monitor watching the mdworker crash and it is very predictable. Time Machine buddy does not pick it up because of course TM is still working albeit at a snail's pace.
Since mdworker is very associated with Spotlight, I tried setting Spotlight to not index any folders—same problem.
Finally, I set the TM destination drive to be a Private drive in the Spotlight Preferences and it finished without an mdworker crash.
It might be a temporary workaround or it might be coincidence that TM worked this time, so YMMV and Apple should look at this too.

  • Time Machine Restore Stalled

I had a failure of a 160 Gig hard drive on my 17" G4 Powerbook 1.67Ghz (2 gig ram, running OS 10.5.5). I bought a Western Digital 250Gig Hard Drive to replace the bad drive. I have an ongoing back up from Time Machine. After installing the new HD I inserted the OS 10.5 DVD and asked it to RESTORE from Time Machine. The process began without a hitch.
When I left last evening I was at about 63% complete and the display said I still needed about 24 hours to complete the RESTORE process
It is now the morning of day three of the restore process.
I arrived this morning to a black screen (as expected). I touched the keyboard to awaken the machine's display as I had over the past two days ... to see the restore processes progress ... nothing happened. The light (next to the latch was burning bright. I touched "enter", I touched "return". Nothing. The display would not come to life. I waited.
After another ten minutes, still nothing after repeated attempts to awake the machine via typical means. So then I touched the "power" button for about a half second (not long enough to shut the machine down) and the display came to life. I was relieved, but only for a moment.
The display showed 67.7% restored. Only a few percentages above 12 hours ago. Very strange. I thought, "I'll check the log to see if there is any indication of why the slow process has slowed down even more.
No cursor is visible. No track pad input in noted o the screen. Crap!
Now every 5 minutes or so the display goes dark (as I would expect) but it will only wake up when touch the power button, and still no cursor or mouse visible.
Now after an hour of watching the screen, re-awakening the screen, and watching for progress ... I'm still at 67.7% restored and no indication of trackpad activity or mouse on the screen.
I have googled "Time Machine Restore Stalled". No helpful posting under that search.
Any ideas? Feel free to forward this discussion anywhere you think would be helpful.

    One last piece.
I connected an external USB mouse. It was immediately recognized. I checked the Installer Log. Nothing looks strange.
Time Machine is still locked at 67.7% even now after another 5 hours of waiting.
Should I stop the RESTORE process and begin the three day process again?

  • Time Machine Erratic/Stalls

Add me to the list of people experiencing major troubles with Time Machine. I've been trying to use it for over two month, and have been going crazy trying to troubleshoot the difficulties. The trouble is that TM randomly stalls during the backup process. It just stops backing up; it doesn't freeze anything, or cause any other noticeable problem, and it doesn't produce any error messages in the Console application. Occasionally, it will, after very long periods, pick up and produce a completed backup once or twice a day. Now, however, it is trying to do its initial backup (after a re-formatting of the external drive), and will not complete it (it stalls at about 120 GB of 197 GB).
I had a one-week period, where it actually worked the way it should--performing hourly backups. That was, I believe, after I did a reinstall of Leopard--an archive and install, to solve other problems Leopard was having (the new Photoshop not working, the disappearance of the PDF print button, etc.). But for some reason it stopped working on the hour.
In the process of troubleshooting, I've tried Time Machine with two different, new 500 GB external drives--a LaCie, and a Western Digital MyBook, the first a USB drive, the second a firewire/USB (I tried modes of connecting for MyBook one). I've reformatted both drives various times, using both the APM and GUID partition map schemes. I've tried reformatting each drive several times, even zeroing out the data once when erasing the disk. I've done various maintenance scans of both external drives and my internal drives using both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior 4.0, and have corrected whatever errors have appeared.
It's very frustrating, but apparently not restricted to me. Any help out there?

Thanks for the tip Matthew - I can't say definitively that this has solved my Time Machine woes long-term, but I can say in the immediate, it has solved the problem and aloud a successful full backup.
I have been plagued by TM issues since the last update to 10.5.2. It will go days working perfectly, and then all the sudden stop working and report either that it could not create a file, could not write to the disk, could not read the disk, or even couldn't find the disk. Other people have reported success with various formatting/partitioning solutions - all of which I have tried and provided immediate resolution, but then TM fails back again after a couple of days. I have attempted to use various drives and connection methods all with the same result. This has become very frustrating and made Time Machine about as useful as my old Dell sitting in the corner.
I hope this fixes the problem long term, I will update at a later time after it has been successful for more than a few days. I also hope Apple is listening!
I just recently switched to the Mac and am very happy with it - save this one on-going and rather large issue.

  • EFI Update Causes Time Machine Problems

After the EFI update today (10/12) Time Machine will no longer mount its disk image on an external network drive via AFP wireless connection. The external drive is presented through Ubuntu 8.10 with Netatalk 2.03. Anyone else having this problem yet, or better yet have a solution?

Fixed it! Mounting it in Disk Utility and repairing the file system worked. It should be noted however that I can't confirm the update was the cause of of this problem but, its some kawinky-**** huh?

  • I have a brand new external hard drive (the Lacie Porsche p9230.) Why do all my attempts to do a time machine backup stall? (usually immediately)

I have a brand new 3T external hard drive (the Lacie Porsche p9230.) I manually backed up several big files from my computer ok, but all attempts to do a time machine backup just stall, usually after only a few K are backed up.  hours go by, no progress.
The first time, it did 3 gigs in just a couple minutes, it then got to about 9 gigs, then nothing for 2 hours.   all subsequent attempts have done merely a few k, or megabytes, then all just stopped, still appearing as if they are proceeding, but with no results over a long time.
It could indeed be the hard drive on my computer itself, but aside from this the computer functions normally, though slow (it's old, 2009.)
As stated. I WAS able to manually back up a folder exceeding 250 gigs in size, and then another of about 14 gigs.
So, why can I nt do a time machine backup, effectively?

All is not lost yet. Lets take it from the begining. By default, the OS is set to mount and drive plugged in. And for the most part it does work. If you haven't already done so, pop open the external case and make sure all of your cables are well seated.
    Next
    Plug in the drive.
    Fire up Disk Utility
In the window pane on the left-hand side, select the drive (selection with the size information of the drive ie - 232.9GB WDC WD2500. . . .)
Click on volume format and make sure Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is selected
    Click on the Erase button
After a couple of minutes is should be done and mounted on the desktop
You can also use Apple System Profiler as a troubleshooting tool. Fire it up and select Firewire from the selections. This will bring up a list of all of the devices it can discover and talk to. If your drive is there and working, it should come up with the drive information such as size, manufactor, etc.

  • Time Machine backups stall

Since updating to Mavericks it's very hard for me to get a complete Time Machine backup. Time Machine is backing up to an AEX moubnted harddrive and I never had any problems before the update. Now most backups will stall and I;ll notice a few days later and stop the backup and restart it. Sometimes this works but it usually takes 3 or 4 tries. Tried repairing permissions on my startup drive but that didn't help. Not sure what to try next.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Copying Mac App Store Apps may cause Time Machine to fail

    Hey folks,
My Time Machine backups started failing the other day with the "error occurred while copying files" error (asking me to run Disk Utility). I ran DU and the drive checked out fine. I eventually checked the backupd logs (Console> filter "backupd") and found that TM was stopping with Error: (-41) SrcErr:No Copying /Path/to/a/file/inside/aMacAppStoreApp. Then saying the backup stopped with error:11.
So I deleted the App and ran the backup again. This time it gave me the same error  on another MacAppStore App that I had installed. So I deleted that one too and then TM backup run successfully.
    Background:
    - There were only two MAS Apps installed (the two referenced above: Quick Note, ARD).
    - Both were installed after being downloaded to a different computer, copied to this one, and then a copy made into the Applications folder. They were working fine.
    - When I "installed" the Apps, I did not do a drag/drop copy, I did a copy/paste.
    - There were two copies of the each App on the filesystem. 1 copy in my "software installers" folder and 1 copy in the Applications folder. Only the copy in the Applications folder failed to backup. The unused copy in the installers folder backed up fine.
Once the backups were working. I then moved the Apps from the "software installers" folder to the Applications folder. I opened the applications and they worked fine. I then ran the backup and it worked fine as well.
So I'm not sure if Time Machine was failing because of my unusual way of copying them into the Applications folder or what? Thoughts? Either way, it seems like a strange thing to cause TM to completely fail.

It's not copy protection issue since after I recopied the App (using drag/drop) the backup worked fine.
You are allowed to copy MAS Apps from one computer to another and run them as long as the target computer is either authorized for the same MAS account or you login to the account that purchased the App.

  • Time Machine Backups Stall out

    Hello,
I thought I had this resolved when I replaced the backup drive.  Time machine backups of my server stall out.  They start seemingly fine, but eventually they will reach a point where the progress bar just stops progressing.  I can find nothing in any log to indicate why this may be happening.  I replaced the backup drive and backups resumed normally until I noticed today it started stalling again.  I have tried resetting time machine by stopping the service in sys prefs, deleting the time machine plist in the root library, and restarting time machine and choosing the drive.  This did not resolve the issue.  Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help.
    Nick

Had the same problem that I resolved.
Went to bed with time machine stuck at 49.8% complete, thinking by the time I awake, it would finish.
Awoke to find it still stuck at 49.8%
Noticed the backup drive's light was off, so I figured if I could wake up the drive, it may resume loading.
I awoke the drive by going to the menu, then click view log.
After a few seconds, the backup drive light turned on, and the progress bar started moving again.
In about 4 minutes, it completed its restoration.
Seems we have to figure out these things on our own.
    Shame on Apple.

  • Time Machine freezes/stalls now that I have a new external HD

I have been using a LaCie HD for years to back up my computer with Time Machine. All has been fine. I have an iMac/OS 10.5.8. But a few months ago, I got an EZQ 1 TB external HD to store my video. The Time Machine is still set to store my backup on the LaCie. But now, every so often, Time Machine will freeze up and stall while trying to back things up. I can't force quit anything, so I need to do a hard restart of the computer. It takes forever to reboot, and when it does, it can't find my EZQ HD. What's going on? Thanks for the info.

    Kyrak21 wrote:
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried all of them, but I'm still having problems. Could the new hard drive be messing up Time Machine, even though they are not connected?
    Possibly, directly or indirectly.
Is Time Machine backing-up anything on the EZQ drive? If so, exclude it for a while and see if the problems stop.
How are these drives connected to your Mac? If they're not on separate ports, try that if at all possible, at least temporarily. If a hub or daisy-chaining is involved, try connecting directly if at all possible. Those should narrow down the possibilities.
If not, it's possible that OSX is having trouble with the EZQ, slowing things down, but not too badly until Time Machine also needs some resources. What happens if you eject and disconnect it -- do the problems stop?
Another way to see what's happening is to watch your CPU usage via the +Activity Monitor+ app (in your Applications/Utilities folder). When it starts, select either +All Processes+ or +Active Processes+ in the toolbar, and sort the list by the +% CPU+ column, so the highest numbers are on top, and select the CPU tab towards the bottom. For this purpose, also select +View > Update Frequency > Less Often+ or Normal from the Menubar.
Various processes will "spike" up and down normally as they do things, then are idle, so you need to watch it for a while and get a feel for the processes that are using the most CPU, and the +% Idle+ at the bottom.
Let it run; try to keep at least the first few lines visible at all times, so you'll be able to see them when your Mac slows down or freezes. When that happens, see what process(es) are using the most CPU.
If the process(es) involved aren't familiar to you, post their names here (and or check this out: http://triviaware.com/macprocess/all)

  • Not sure if Time Machine is stalled or not

I'm backing up with Time Machine for the first time; I just upgraded to Snow Leopard a couple of weeks ago from 10.4 (on a Macbook Pro), and been having problems, so the Genius at the Apple Store recommended backing up with TM, erasing my disk and reinstalling 10.6. The disk I'm backing up to is connected via firewire, and although I've been using it for some time I reformatted before this, GUID, Extended Journaling. The first couple times the MBP crashed in the middle of the backup. Then I got an automatic "software updates available" message, so I updated with the hope that that would help. The system has not crashed yet, but I noticed that the progress bar is not showing ANY progress...I don't mean slow, but none in the last 25 minutes. The blue in the bar is still cycling but it's been reading that it's backed up 27.53GB for the last 25 minutes. I've read in other posts about some wonky progress bar issues with Time Machine; anyone have a guess as to whether this is crashed, or merely pig slow?

    cfdoyle wrote:
I had actually just downloaded carbon copy cloner yesterday, and the mac crashed 7 hours into backing up.
That's not good. Did the system crash, or did CCC crash and cause it? You should be able to restart and have it do an "update," so it doesn't have to start over. What kind of drive were you backing-up to? 7 hours sounds terribly slow, unless you have a very large system.
The Genius at the Apple Store said one of the advantages of Time machine is that I can wipe the drive, reinstall the operating system, and then reload not only the files from my backup but also the applications, with all of their system files. It would easily take a day for me to reinstall all my software from CDs, not to mention how much software I've downloaded and don't have disks for.
That's correct (see #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum), but you can do the same with a clone.
One of Time Machine's advantages is the quick hourly incremental backups of changes; you have an excellent chance to recover a previous version of something that was changed or deleted in error, or somehow came up corrupted.
As I said, I'm a fan of TM. But it's not perfect, and for this particular one-time use, CCC or SD will be more reliable, since you can test it.
Like many folks here, I do both: full Time Machine backups and a CCC clone on a separate HD. No app is perfect, and all hardware fails, sooner or later. I would never erase my boot drive without two full backups.
The Genius also said that my hard drive could be getting close to failure (3 years old with heavy use) even though it passes all the tests...which is one reason why I am concerned about getting a solid backup ASAP.
    Oh, yes, absolutely.

  • Time Machine restore stalling on brand new 15" MBP (OS 10.10.1)

    Hi,
Just bought a new MBP 15" and thought the migration process would be as easy as it's been for me since the intoduction of Time Machine. However for some unkown reason the Time Machine restore in Migration Assistant is stalling about 60% through,,, (saying 26 mins remaining for hours now).
Has anybody encountered this on new computers running Yosemite? I am restoring from a Time Machine Backup via Thunderwire. Previous computer is in service with Apple, but was running the same version of Yosemite and all.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Time Machine backup stalls in 10.5.5

I noticed yesterday that my Time Machine backup was stalled... and that no new backup had been made since Tuesday, shorty before I installed 10.5.5. I've run Disk Utility on my 1TB Hitachi drive and tried copying to and from it, and it appears to be fine.
I've restarted several times, turned Time Machine on and off, and reselected the drive, and the result is the same every time. Time Machine prepares the backup a while, finds 1.5 Gb of files to back up, and then either stalls or works so slowly that it never comes close to finishing.
Anyone have any ideas what is going on? Is there any way I can narrow down the problem?
Also, is there anyway I can roll back to 10.5.4? That would at least tell me for sure that the problem is 10.5.5.

That's OK. If you take a look at the Console logs Time Machine is reporting that your backups need "deep traversal". That's fine. Time Machine knows what is wrong and how to fix it. Let it do it's thing. If you have alot if data, it may take quite awhile.
After your update to 10.5.5 Time Machine realized the system no longer matched what it looked like during the previous backup. So it has determined that it's earlier catalogue of what-should-be-where is 'untrustable'. So it is going to go item-by-item comparing the before and after of your system. It knows what it's doing - let it do it!
    Hope that helps.

  • Time Machine has stalled

I am backing up my Mtn. Lion MacBook Pro to a Drobo connected via Firewire to my Snow Leopard server. I am backing up over WiFi.
The backup failed a few days ago. I have tried mount the backup. I repaired the backup by connecting the Drobo directly to my MBP. The Time Machine backup started again, but it stalls in the KB to low MB range of 6.5GB. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why?
Thanks in advance for the help.

No, that's not normal at all. What model of the MBP do you have? How is the external drive connected (USB 2, USB 3, Firewire 400 or 800, etc.)? Answer those questions and also check out these Time Machine FAQs.

  • LaCie "Eco Mode" causing Time Machine problems

I just purchased a LaCie P'9231, which is advertised as an Apple Store Exclusive. I've been having problems with it and Time Machine and I'm starting to think its due to the Eco Mode feature. I'd rather have the HD on all the time and turn "Eco Mode" completely off and I've unchecked the "Put the Hard Disk to Sleep..." option in Energy Saver. Still I'm looking at it right in front of me in Eco Mode (so it didn't help). Any drivers to instal or are others experienceing this problem? Thank you so much!!!!

I just encountered essentially the same problem with a new LaCie "USB 3.0" 3-terabyte d2 drive (part of their new "v3" series). Although it's called the "USB 3.0" drive, it actually has ports for eSata, USB 2.0, USB 3.0, and Firewire 800 -- I use Firewire 800.
The manual says you can turn off Eco Mode using the LaCie Desktop Manager. I want it turned off because I have several drives and waiting for them to spin up one by one every time I use my Mac is unacceptable. Desktop Manager's Eco tab has a single button that takes you to the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, where I always have the 'Put the Hard Disk to Sleep..." option turned off. The manual says this will stop the drive from spinning down in Eco Mode.
Nevertheless, the drive always spins down after a few minutes of inactivity. Worse, it will NOT spin back up when I open the drive's window or drag a file onto it. Instead, it freezes the Finder so that I can do nothing on my Mac -- among other things, I can't drag the drive icon to the trash to dismount it. I have to turn the drive off using its power switch, which of course brings up an alert telling me that doing this might damage the drive and instead I should dismount it first -- and then the Finder comes back to life. According to Desktop Manager, I could also set up the button on the front of the drive so that pushing it will cause the drive to spin back up. I haven't bothered to try that because I am unwilling to have to turn my devices on and off by pushing hardware buttons all the time.
LaCie tech support just sent me a message telling me that the drive is designed so that you cannot turn off Eco Mode. That is directly inconsistent with the manual, so I assume tech support means that they still don't have the firmware in the drive working right. They released a firmware update in late August that supposedly fixes a wake/sleep problem, but reading between the lines of the tech support messages I received, that apparently relates only to a problem when your Mac goes to sleep -- I have mine set so that it never sleeps.
Bottom line: unless and until LaCie revises the firmware to allow the drive to keep spinning all the time -- as advertised -- this product is essentially unusable to me.
