Isight connect via ip address

I just bought an imac (first time mac user) and i would like to use the isight camera to connect to my parents (who are deaf) video phone via ip address. Can this be done? I don't see a way to do it with ichat is there another application that i can use?

Welcome to Apple Discussions, jonesyusa
You are right that iChat will NOT connect directly to your parents' video phone.
If your parents use some kind of Sorenson video phone, try the suggestions that
helped user BroadwayBound96 at this post:

If your parent's video phone is by another vendor, substitute that vendor's name and contact info in the suggestions offered in the above link.
The only other difference is that iChat System Requirements for the new Leopard version of iChat (iChat 4) is shown in this Apple knowledge-base article.

  • VCN only while connected via internet address?

I have scoured all the posts here, and searched every phrase I could think of, and read the manual to find the information I am seeking, but I cannot seem to find an answer. I have found similar posts/complaints but no solutions.
I have ARD 3 on my MacBook Pro, and I use it from my office to assist my wife, who works at home, and my mother, who lives in Canada.
My wife's PowerBook is correctly configured in the System Preferences > Sharing > Services pane. She is on a fixed 10.x.x.x IP address behind and Apple Airport Extreme, with ports 8283 and 5900 forwarded correctly to her machine.
My mother has a cable modem (COGECO cable, Canada), fixed IP address, an NO router.
In both cases, firewalls are disabled on their machines.
In ARD, I can see both machines by their DNS names in the list. Status says "offline", but if I open either of them, I see their screens and am able to rudimentarily control both machines. What I cannot do is any of the other Management tasks, like System Reports, client Upgrades, etc.
Is there something inherent in ARD 3 that forces machines connected over the Internt (vs. LAN) to only be controllable in VNC mode? Or am I missing something here?
One question: in the client computers, should the System Preferences > Sharing > Services > ARD > VNC viewers may control screen with password, be checked or unchecked, and does it matter if I am logging into the machines via an admin account I created on both?
Thanks in advance for any useful tips!

    Kevin,
it appears to me ... though I am a *total amateur* and only know what I've gleaned from these boards and the net in order to setup ARD for myself ... that for those using Airport networks (lots of us) it is necessary to manually open ports 3283, 5900 in the Sharing preferences under Firewall. If not, the traffic doesn't pass ... even on a LAN. So, you need to add a New configuration in the Firewall tab. (IOW it is NOT enough to simply select ARD in the "Services" tab).
This appears to me to be the problem with VNC over the net ... although I'm not sure that it's a problem really.
I have ARD 3 internet connections working on 3 locations. All of them behind Airport networks. When connected, "VNC On" appears under the "Current Status" tab in ARD 3.
I'm not sure if I'm connecting via VNC or not. I say this because, VNC has only been initiated remotely via "Change Client Settings" in the Manage Menu. It has NOT been set in the Sharing preferences on the client Mac. So ... is it ON or not??
Or ... am I getting a VNC connection because port 5900 is available and necessary due to it having been opened to accomodate the Airport network ? IOW ... is ARD 3 simply taking the route of least resistance ?
My own questions at this point are ...
    1/ Does it matter ?
2/ Is VNC, in my case, less secure than a 'direct' ARD connection?
3/ Is VNC faster or slower than a 'direct' ARD commection?
4/ Are there things that I CANNOT do with VNC that I can do with a 'direct' ARD connection?
5/ Would Ports 22 and 5988 help? (I've seen these mentioned in archived threads).
    Grant
(P.S. ... many thanks to those who contribute on this board. I know how frustrating it is trying to communicate this sort of thing to the uninitiated).

  • Wireless connects via MAC address, but not with essid.

I have an eee 901 using the zeneee901 kernel. I got wireless to work out of the box to an extent. This will probably be easier to exlain just posting the commands.
    ifconfig ra0 up
    iwlist ra0 scan
    iwconfig ra0 essid *essid here*
    dhcpcd ra0
    TIMEOUT GOES HERE
    iwconfig ra0 ap MACADDRESS
    dhcpcd ra0
    Connected!
This wouldn't be so bad except I can'tuse Wicd. This was happening way before I installed Wicd btw.
    What's the deal?

R00KIE wrote:The way you do it I don't know, but in wicd you can select an option to associate by essid instead of mac address and it works fine for me.
Someone else might be able to answer your question. Maybe you can consider using another network connection manager, would makes things easier. Although knowing why it doesn't work is also good
That's good, but I can't find that option. Where is it?

  • Connecting via MAC address?

    Guys,
For some strange reason, one of our suppliers needs to install a device (Nortel Meridian media card) which cannot have an IP address configured on it.
The supplier engineer swears blind that on other sites, he can connect to this device just by using MAC address.
Is there a way to communicate with this device just using destination MAC address? I have scoured the internet with no luck so far.
We have Catalyst 4507Rs with 12.2.20 IOS.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
If it cannot be configured with an IP address, what network layer protocol does it use, if any? You can certainly communicate with it, assuming that the application being used to communicate with this device uses the same upper layer protocols. As long as the ethernet headers are compliant, the switches will forward them based on what is in the mac-address-table.

  • Restricting access via MAC address?

    Hello,
Could someone please tell me how to restrict access to my wireless network (and internet sharing) by only allowing computers with a certain MAC address to join?
    I'm kinda stumbling around here
    Thanks,
    Jonny

Sorry if I wasn't being specific enough...
I have my eMac set up as a Software Base Station, which streams internet & Airtunes to an Airport Express. I have it set up this way, because my ADSL modem is connected via USB (so it's a bit of a workaround). As a result, I have Internet Sharing switched on, so I can access it from all my other macs.
What I want to do is to stop other people from accessing my eMac's internet connection. If I set up a WEP password for Internet Sharing, I lose my Airtunes facility... so I was thinking another way might be to restrict access to the connection via MAC address. I only want my other airport card-equipped macs to access the internet connection and network generally.
    Surely it's possible?

  • Setting up new imac on network using dhcp nut not getting a valid ip address. Same happens when I try to connect via wi-fi. IP address being assigned is 10.45.190.195

Have new Imac that I'm setting up. Company is using DHCP to manage IP addresses. Mac is plugged into netgear hub along with a PC. Mac is getting an invalid IP address of 10.45.190.195. PC is working fine. I've powered the hub on and off. I've renewed th DHCP lease on the Mac many times but IP address always comes back as 10.45.190.195. I've plugged the network cable directly in the network port bypassing the hub. Same result.
Having the same issue when trying to connect via Wi-Fi,
    Anyone experiencing this issue?

I see what you are saying. When I lived in the dorms, I was set up in bridge mode because we had that type of modem. My question now is do I distribute a range of static IP's or share a public? Either of these settings give me errors where the starting and ending DHCP addresses conflict. I use 10.0.1.1 and 10.0.1.100 and this error no longer seems to persist, but then I am not able to connect to the internet and the amber light keeps flashing- along with my computer showing that I am still connected to the TM.
Thank you for your support so far.

  • Script to get Serial number of a Dockingstation via IP address of connected laptop

Is there a script to get Serial number of a Dockingstation via IP address of the laptop ?

If the vendor exposes it via WMI on any level it's possible using Powershell or vbScript by leveraging WMI.
    GET-WMIOBJECT win32_bios -computername 10.0.0.10
in Powershell will pull up BIOS details on the laptop in Powershell for a remote workstation of IP address 10.0.0.10
It would depend on your vendor (IE: Dell) where in WMI the Docking station might make the change.  I would hazard it as "probably not" though.

  • Can't connect via Ethernet

I have an iMac G5 iSight and have been using Airport successfully to connect to the Internet via a DW6000 satellite modem. Since I have now retired and will no longer be using a Powerbook, I decided to stop using Airport and attempted to connect via a hardwired cable from the iMac to the Modem. It refuses to work. The settings show that it has acquired the correct address from my provider and is properly connected to Direcway via DHCP. I have rebooted the modem and the computer, renewed the DHCP licence all to no avail. The information says that although the Ethernet port is active, it has an internal address and cannot be connected to the Internet.
By the way, I was able to connect to the Internet via Airport or Ethernet with my G4 Powerbook. But I can't do it via Ethernet with the iMac.
What can I do to get this working?
    Griff

    Problem resolved!
I don't know what the problem was. I just tried again. This time I did not reboot the computer. I shut down the modem, attached the Ethernet cable and fired it up again and this time I was connected!
So I really don't have an answer except that it just decided to start working.

  • Powerbook G4 can't connect via ethernet but connects via airport

We have a small office network connected to an Efficient Networks DSL router that's managed by our isp. The router has 4 ports and a linksys 8 port switch is connected to one of those ports. Another D-Link wireless router/switch is connected to another port.
2 i-macs connect without problem via ethernet cable. They are set to DHCP and get 192.xx private addresses. Both run 10.4.5. Another older imac running 9.2.2. also has no problems.
I recently purchased a powerbook G4 and it will not connect via ethernet to the Efficient networks router. At first it was connected to the linksys, so decided to connect it direct to the Efficient Networks router. With DHCP, it acquires a 169. internet address which is self generated (i.e. no real connection). I tried to give it a static private address (talking to the isp provider). They could see the powerbook but saw all zero's (presumable mac address). By the way the Powerbook works perfectly at home connected via ethernet cable to a D-Link router connected to a cable modem so it's not a physical problem. I even checked the ethernet cable I used in the office with another computer - no problem.
When I switch to airport in the office, the powerbook connects to the network and the internet. I get some strange warning messages showing the server's and the router's private ip addresses. I click ok, and the powerbook finds an unassigned private ip address. It's the only way it will work, but it causes problems, because I can't connect to one of the network printers. Speed also isn't great.
Can anyone give me advise how to proceed. I am no expert on this stuff so keep it as simple as possible.
    Tks

    Tim,
Thanks for your help. Here's what I've done before reading your e-mail. The D-Link DI-524 wireless router is connected to the Effiicent Neworks DSL router as you mentioned. One ethernet port of the EFF.Net. router is connected to the WAN port of the DI-514.
Because I have a D-Link router at home which works flawlessly with my powerbook, I decided to connect the ethernet cable of the powerbook to the D-Link which has 4 ethernet ports. Lo and behold, the powerbook acquired a private ip address and connected to the LAN and internet!
When I connected the powerbook direct to the Efficient Networks router, it could not communicate. I believe that there must be some software incompatibility between the powerbook and the Efficient Networks router. By connecting to the D-Link, the D-Link assigned an ip address to the powerbook, and it could connect to the server, lan, etc..
Only problem is that I have a Brother network printer that cannot connect to the powerbook. My powerbook cannot find it on the network. Because there is a linksys switch connected to the efficient networks router's third ethernet port, maybe as you said, going through the D-Link via DHCP (when the Linksys is also acting as a DHCP server, might cause this type of problem. What do you think?
As a final note, other imac G5's connected to the linksys switch (which then connects to the Efficient Network's router) have no problem connecting to the lan or internet and have no problem connecting to any of the printers. When I put the powerbook on that switch, I could not connect to the internet - i.e. whether connecting via the lynksys switch or direct with the efficient networks router - same results: no internet connection whether manually or via DHCP.
So the imac G5 has no problem with the efficient networks router but the powerbook G4 hits a brick wall. The G4 likes the D-Link router. I am concerned (and I will have to check this) that if I turn off the dhcp server feature from the D-Link, that whatever software issue crops up between the powerbook and the Efficient Networks router, will rise up again, because the D-Link will act like a simple switch (just like my linksys switch), and we'll be back to square zero. In any case, no harm in trying. This may be the cause of the Powerbook not seeing that Brother printer (even though it sees another printer and other macs).
Having spent hours reading about network problems, I think it's safe to say that macs have problems with certain routers. Why a G5 works and a powerbook G4 doesn't is beyond me, but clearly software must play a role.

  • The iTune Remote App has stopped finding my iTunes library when connected to wifi from my main router, but works fine when connected via second wifi router on the same network (different SSID)

I'm running iTunes Remote App from a couple of iPhone 5's and a first generation iPod Touch. iTunes is running on a PC - Windows 7. My home network runs two Wifi Routers, each with a different SSID. I've had no problems with the Remote app running this set up for the last 8 months but recently the App can only find my iTunes library when the iPhone/iPod is connected via one specific router, when connected to the network via the other router, no iTunes library is found. I'm also running an Apple TV and it's the same as the iTunes Library, only visible via the one SSID.
Everything else seems to work fine when connected via either router, eg Internet on the iPhones (definitely via wifi)
I've tried renewing the lease on the iPhone wifi connection, restarting everything.....several times.....
It used to work fine, this only seems to have been a problem in recent weeks
Any help or advice would be much appreciated
    Thanks
    Ian

It turned out to be the firewall settings on our router. Her machine was sending traffic that our router interpreted as a DoS attack and blacklisted her Airport's MAC address. That's why it would work fine if she switched to Ethernet.

  • Question regarding ONT connection via Ethernet and Cable cards

    Hi,
We recently upgraded to Fios Quation 150Mbps/65  plan. We are not getting the advertised speeds (we only get like 5mbps upload) so verizon is sending a tech to switch the ONT connection from coax to ethernet.
I have 2 questions regarding this new setup:
    1. If the ONT communicates with the Fios Actiontect router via ethernet instead of coax from now on, How will the set top boxes and Tivo-esque cable card powered device I currently have connected to coax, talk to the verizon system from now on, if coax is taken out of the equation? Will fios signal still flow through the internal coax wiring of the house? And moreover, I was under the impression that coax was the way set top boxes communicated and derived independent ip addresses from the Fios router, for on deman purposes and what not. How will this work from now on?
    Quiestion 2.
Right next to the wall where the ONT sits, theres's a basement office where we have a PC that connects to the Fios system  via an Actiontect MoCa adapter (ECB2500C) which I assume derives it internet connection from the Fios Actiontec router which sits upstairs in the living room.
Again, with the Coax about to be disabled next Friday in favor of ethernet connection from the ONT, I assume this PC will be left without internet because of the lack of internet signal in the coax? Is this correct?
Question 2.5 If my above assumption is correct, since this office is right on the other side of the wall where the ONT sits outside the house, would it be possible to run an ethernet wire through the wall that connects straight from the ONT to an ethernet switch inside the office, from which I would derive a connection for this basement PC (properly firewalled of course) and then, from said switch, continue running the ethernet wire that would ultimately reach the Actiontec Fios router upstairs from which the rest of the house derives it's internet?  and would this setup affect in any way the propper functioning of the cable boxes in the house?
I'd appreciate your input and any help you can provide so I can have a ballpark idea of what to tell the Fios guy to do when he comes on Friday.
    Cheers.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It's not valid to have two devices connected to the ONT, PC and VZ Router.  Must be a single device. The ONT locks onto the MAC Address of the first device it sees. Since you have TV you should have the VZ router as the internet facing router.
    Other options:
    1.  Have the VZ Router located next to the PC in the basement and then use Wireless for all other PC's.
    2.  Have the VZ Router located next to the PC in the basement but run one wire upstairs and connect a switch where other PCs and devices can connect via a wire.
    Hope that helps.

  • Unable to connect via wireless, printer is online.

I am using a Photosmart plus 209a via wireless.  There are 3 notebooks connected. 2 will print but my Dell Studio (Win 7 Pro) will not. It was previously connected but now unable to connect.  I have uninstalled all components using level 3 twice. Have used the Print/Scan tool.  Downloaded the full SW package and the Basic driver SW. I process a job and it gets to the spooler and then "print job failed".  I can view the control panel via IP address. I can view network settings and print wireless test page through HP Solution Center.  Why am I unable to connect?  I was able to use via USB but this is not an option.

It sounds like there is something different on the Dell Studio since it works from two other computers on the same network as the Dell Studio.  It also sounds like you are able to access the EWS of the printer by using its IP address.
Are there any other errors messages regarding the printer?  If so, what are they?
Is there a third party firewall installed (e.g. Norton, Kasperksy, BitDefender, etc.)?
Is this Windows 7 Professional 32bit or 64bit?

  • IBook G4 Can't connect via Ethernet?

While we were away lightning took out several devices. Among them was the Airport Extreme Base Station and the cable modem. The modem has been replaced. I have an iMacG5 and an iBookG4 both running 10.4.11. The iMac can establish a connection via Ethernet (all this happened yesterday so I have yet to replace the Airport). The laptop apparently won't accept an IP address from the router/modem and won't connect to the internet.
I did see a message saying that my network settings had been changed by another application but don't know if this figures in the mix.
Anyone have any ideas how I ought to approach getting the iBook back online?
