ISight disables 'idle'

After some complaints from 'buddies' I have established that, on my system, having the iSight camera connected (with its aperture open) disables the automatic 'idle xx minutes' indication (that is my indication as seen by others) on iChat. Thus I continue to look available even if I am long away from my machine. I am not sure if this is a mistake in the code, some specific conflict on my system or whether it has been set this way on purpose for some arcane reason, but it is certainly a nuisance! This has nothing to do with any other program's (eg screen saver, screen dim, sleep..) perception of 'idleness' which behaves normally. I have tried trashing iChat prefs with no change, and things work this way regardless of the 'automatically open iChat when camera is switched on' setting in iChat video prefs - do others get the same behaviour?

Hi Will,
This info is kept in com.aple.ichat.AIM.plist
You can tell this as the Date Modified and time will change as you change the iChat preference - Block other from Seeing I am Idle setting.
However it seems to be an invisible part of the .plist as I can not get it to display in Prpoerty List Editor (with Developer Tools) or TextEdit.
As to why it is doing this I am not sure. Deleting the .plist may help.
Actualy, MacOSXHints at this page suggest it may be in one of the other .plists but the tread is fairly old and things have changed with iChat 3.

  • High school computer lab: turning off iSight, disabling Photobooth

We purchased new iMacs for our computer labs, and the iSight camera plus Photo Booth have been nothing but needless distractions since the school year began. I think that it is UNACCEPTABLE that Apple did not foresee the need to turn these cameras off and provide a way to do so in system preferences, rather than forcing people to rely on a command line hack to get this done.
I also find it incredibly stupid to provide people WITHOUT administrator privileges the option of changing the account pictures through Photo Booth. This is just idiotic. All of the account pictures for our public accounts (where all system preferences are locked) have been changed to photo booth pictures and it takes time to change them back on 90+ computers.
Yes, I know that Photo booth access can be disabled, but it is like it never entered Apple's mind that these computers might be used in computer labs, otherwise, (a) the option to turn this camera off would have been provided, and (b) they would not have included an option in an application which allows a person without admin privileges to change an account's picture. If the ability to change an account picture is turned off, shouldn't photo booth know this? Stupid.
    Just venting.

I have sent apple my feedaback because I have a similar problem. I have a mobile MacBook Lab and can't seem to find a way to disable the option in Photo Booth that sends the photo taken to the users login account picture. This cuts down on my administrative efficiency because I have to change the user account pictures back to its original. The problem that there is no option to disable the "send to accounts feature" in a school enviornment is the students who use photo booth to take obscene photos and then send them to the accounts picture.
Please help me with a solution. Is there is a way to recreate the Login window to it's, original established set of account pictures, after a user logs out of their account? These MacBooks are used by many different grade levels including 1st and 2nd graders and I cannot expose them to the obscene login pictures.

  • ISight disabled while screens are locked? ARD 3

    Hi there,
We've recently set up a system on our iMacs with built in iSight cameras, whereby a snapshot is taken every thirty seconds and uploaded to a server via ftp. After a spate of recent break-ins we're hoping to get a recorded history of what happens in our labs outside working hours.
We have this working with both cron or launchd and it all works fine except we have recently set ARD 3 to lock the screens outside opening hours and this seems to disable the iSight camera so that no snapshot can be taken.
I'm just wondering if anyone knows if this is intentional or if anyone can think of a work around!?
    thanks!
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I do experience the same problem; it seems like there is a problem in screen-refreshing? Only where I move the mouse cursor, the underlying window becomes partially visible. Like zanyjudy described: it looks "blocked"
    What can I do?
I am running the latest version of remote desktop on a MacBookPro 10.8.5 and a MacMini Server 10.8.5. Both are connected via Gbit-LAN or 50 Mbit DSL

  • How to disable idle logout from Yosemite?

    Hello,
My iMac logs me out after being idle for an extended period of time, usually 40-60 minutes. Generally I am streaming a movie from my iMac to my Apple TV when i notice it as when it logs off it quits playing the movie. It is very irritating.
I have done the following as per google & forum searches
    - Gone to Security in Sys Pref and ensured that the Require Password after x is unchecked - Done (was never checked)
    - Gone into Energy Saver to make sure that the computer is set to NEVER sleep display (<-i know this is unrelated) or computer, as well as ensure that Put Hard Disks to Sleep is unchecked as well.
At this point I am not sure what else to do, is it perhaps a system process that is initiating this? Can I tell in a log some how?
    Thanks,
    James

    Hi ..
System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General then click the Advanced tab.
You may be prompted for your admin password to proceed.
The window offers a time limit for log out determined by minutes of inactivity
    Make sure that's not checked.

I have trying to use a MacBook with OS 10.4.10 from school on Skype. I can see and talk with the other person but they cannot see me. I think the built in iSight or camera is not engaged but I cannot find a way to activate it. Any advice?

When iSight is activated you will see a green light. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090

  • Disable built-in iSight or otherwise enable External Webcam

    Hi All,
I'm trying to take pics directly onto a MacBook. Don't need anything fancy, so PhotoBooth would suffice, but I need more control over where the camera is pointing than lifting and trying to aim a laptop. We have a Logitech 9000 but we can't get photobooth to use it. We tried tying up the built-in iSight with another app: this just causes photobooth to open with a blank black screen. We tried an applescript to disable the internal iSight (script "Intel Mac iSight Disabler" from [email protected]): this caused photobooth to launch with an error "No Camera" icon.
Anyone know either a way to disable the built-in isight and have an external webcam work OR an app that does basically what Photobooth does but with the ability to choose the camera?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hello Jeff.
    (1) Re-enable your built-in iSight. The script you mention disables ALL USB webcams when any are disabled.
To use a different (must be compatible with your Mac) camera, occupy your built-in iSight in another app that lets you select the camera BEFORE you launch Photo Booth. Then, when you launch Photo Booth, it will automatically connect the webcam that is not already in use. For more details, scroll down and take a look at (3) in this link:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11033260&#11033260
It deals with built-in iSight and the iSight in an LED Display, but the idea is the same.
    (2) For more info on alternative webcams, take a look at this use Tip:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2018211
Depending on the exact model of your Logitech, macam drivers apparently may allow it to work with your Mac. More info at the macam site:
      http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/cameras/index.php
Depending on how much budget you have and whether you have trouble making your Logitech work, you may find buying a new "UVC" webcam to be a simpler solution for a second webcam.

  • Can I disable isight?

    hello
I work at a college and am having trouble with students using the isight camera on internet chat sites. I have run a iSight Disabler AppleScript 2.0 which disables the isight fine on over half our intel imacs, the only problem is that on the imacs which have final cut pro version 5 on it, it will then not open the FCP software at all - it comes up with an error.
Can anyone please help me?!?!? Is there anything else i can use to disable the isight without it affecting final cut pro??
Putting tape across the camera will not work either as the students will just pick it off.
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated!!!!
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, misticgirl
I do not use FCP, but I know that iSight Disabler AppleScript 2.0 is for iNtel Macs. Do your problem iMacs have iNtel or PPC processors?
If they are iNtel iMacs, have you restarted FCP after running the Script? I found this Screenshot (on the techslaves.org info page.) The dialog box says: "You need to restart applications which use the iSight driver after applying these settings." My interpretation is that "applying these settings" means clicking the "Enable iSight" or "Disable iSight" button.
I can find no FAQ, other technical support, or contact info in the techslaves.org pages. However, the techslaves.org info page warns that iSight Disabler AppleScript 2.0 has been tested only on OS X 10.4.8 and only on MacBook. There is no mention of any testing with FPC. You may want to ask about that at techslaves.org's "Talk" or "Suggestions" forum.
If you get no help here, I suggest you pose your question in the Final Cut Pro Forum. You may get some suggestions there.

Barring some unusual circumstance, there should be no need to disable your built-in iSight because YOU decide when to use your iSight.
Some apps such as iChat allow you to enable and disable the webcam from menu commands.
Other apps such as Photo Booth only use the camera when you click the button.
However, if you REALLY want to disable, scripts like this one can easily disable and enable iSight.
      http://techslaves.org/index.php?page=62
However, be aware that it simultaneously disables ALL USB webcams when active.
Although I do not recommend it, you can manually disable your built-in iSight by removing the "QuickTimeUSBVDCDIgitizer.component" file from your computer's HardDriveName > System > Library > QuickTime folder and restarting your Mac. Your built-in iSight should no longer work with any app.
P.S. Manually moving, renaming, or deleting files outside your Username/Documents folder
is generally a BAD idea unless you KNOW how it will effect OS X.

  • Isight internal and external swaping

I would like to know if there is anyway that I can use my external isight camera instead of the internal. I have tried the isight disabler but it still doesn't fully do it. It ends up turning it back on. I know that my Macbook pro (2008-2009)does recognize it but I doesn't use it.
I have my iSight plugged to the firewire cable which is the old firewire which does work with my ibook G4. Then to that cable it is attached to an adapter for the new firewire port for the Macbook Pro. The laptop slows for about 20 seconds recognizing it but doesn't show up in sub-menues to choose "Available Cameras" in any application.
    Here's what happens:
Start iSight disabler and disable the camera inside the laptop.
Start Quicktime/Photobooth/iMovie to start a new recording it reverts back to the internal.
I go back to the script and enable it in frustration. (funny)
Now I am willing to take all your responses to help me with this problem.
    Thank you in advance.

tried a diffrent cord and it did work but now i dont know why the flex stand i bought for it doesnt work for it. now i need a new stand....

  • Oracle idle time

    Hi all,
In one of our test database(11.2.0.1.0),we want to disable idle time out for developers.
There resource_limit=true and default profile has been assigned to all users, where idle time is unlimited.
    Also SQLNET.EXPIRE_TIME=0.
But still the session gets ORA-03113 error, if the session has been idle for long time.
We want the session not to be disconnected.
By default,is Oracle following any idle time out limits.
    Need your help

You may have issues that are not linked to timeout. Please check your database instance alert log:
    $ oerr ora 3113
    03113, 00000, "end-of-file on communication channel"
// *Cause: The connection between Client and Server process was broken.
// *Action: There was a communication error that requires further investigation.
//          First, check for network problems and review the SQL*Net setup.
//          Also, look in the alert.log file for any errors. Finally, test to
//          see whether the server process is dead and whether a trace file
//          was generated at failure time.

Hi, I'm trying to upgrade an iPhone 4 from iOS 6.0.1 to the latest version (7.1.2) but facing the dreaded 3194 error in iTunes. I have tried everything from resetting my hosts file to disabling my firewall and anti-virus but the error just will not go away.. it occurs right at the end of the restore process after the software has been restored and is being verified. I looked through the update log and it seems to be an issue with updating the baseband. Copying a section of the log below.

    Hi Md. Abdur Rahman,
Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
If your iPhone 4 is restarting unexpectedly, there are a few things to do depending on how frequently this is happening.
If it is restarting intermittently (from time to time), you may want to back up your data and restore the iPhone to factory settings:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings - Apple Support
If the same thing occurs, this article suggests contacting Apple Support for more help:
If your iOS device restarts, displays the Apple logo, or powers off while you're using it - Apple Support
Make sure your iOS device is up to date. If you still see this issue after updating, contact Apple Support.
    Sincerely,
    Jeremy
