ISight / DV-PAL project problems

I'm trying to export an iMovie project I've made back to a video camera, but it's coming up with the message that because it's an iSight project, it can't be done. I didn't select iSight as an option when I created the project, and haven't used iSight to import clips - they were all from the camera, so I don't know how it's happened. I've tried to copy and paste the clips into a new DV-PAL project, but when I do, some content is missing and in places it's the wrong part of the clip.
Do I have any alternative other than starting from scratch and editing the whole thing again?
Thanks

marknian,
"iSight the default setting?"
I'm not sure. I believe iMovie senses the iSight camera presence and adjusts accordingly.
Here's what I'd try. Choose Share>QuickTime>Full Quality and then import the resulting file back into a newly created iMovie project.
Make sure that you choose DV as the video format for the new project and that in iMovie>Preferences>General you have 25 fps selected.

  • Can some explain 1080i and 1080p which is better for a pal project in HD

I am new with these type of codec, plus which one is better for a pal projects not NTSC. Also I want to know if there would be any problems when I take a project that is done in Pal and move it to NTSC would there be some frame problems.
    thanks

I like the p footage better because it looks more like film, plays better on the computer, and looks better in web streams... as far as going to NTSC in the end, Compressor's "advanced format conversions" or Graeme Nattress' Standards converter does a fine job of PAL to NTSC... Edit in the native format you've shot though, then in the end do the standards conversion. You needn't worry about anything special here...

  • Images importing with a NTSC timebase in PAL projects

Importing a series of jpeg images (various sizes) into a PAL project is resulting in the clips created having a NTSC timebase (Video Rate of 29.97fps). Not a big problem, but annoying as a clip that is set to 3:12 goes onto the timeline with a duration of 3:10.
Has anyone else had this happen?

When you say : «bad idea not to export at least a master in full res» how can I do this ?
What I meant was that for EVERY single project you work on you should always at the end export a QT movie self-contained with same settings as a Master.
So that is something to do next time you edit and complete a project, for this particular situation you posted about I told you already what to do.

  • Reexporting DV PAL project to 2K or HD

I'm interested if enyone  knows iif it is possible to export what was first done as an DV PAL project to some bigger format?  All the orriginal materials are big and it shouldn't be any problem to use it in 2k or HD project but postproduction was originally done as DV PAL.
    Pls Help!
    Thank you

This sounds like you are hoping it would only take a magic button to make it happen, which is slightly naive (no offense), meaning, no, there is no such thing. If you want the full quality back, you will have to walk the full mile in post again. That doesn't say you cannot work based on the existing project, but short of e.g. using the scale comps script that comes with AE and rigging up a few expressions to auto-size, this will still require a lot of manual work. Effects values will simply require to be adjusted to retain the look (obviously, a 3px blur will not do much at HD when it notably softens at smaller res) and working at the larger res may reveal imperfections that didn't matter before. Even things like type looking different at different sizes will require manual intervention....

  • Pls help! Audio out of sync -  PAL project

    Hi,
I have run into the annoying audio out of synch problem
I have a PAL project put together in FCP HD 4.5 and exported as "mpeg1 dvd - all" in compressor.
By the end of the 15 minute project the audio is out of synch by more than 1 second (25 frames or more).
I really need to get this project burned tonight so I guess I have 2 questions....
Given what I already own, (Production Suite), what steps do I need to do to get this project finished tonight - ie compressor settings, fiddling etc etc
And secondly, what do I need to do to properly fix this bug - for it IS a bug - so I don't run into it again.
Many thanks for all you help in advance.

    kennymillar-at-mac-dot-remove-this-bit-dot-com

I used compressor to export as MPEG2 (I chose MPEG 2 High Quality 60 Minute) and it created an aiff file, which is also out of synch at the end of the project by more than 1 second.
    So that didn't work
Please someone give the guys at Apple a shake and ask them to get this fixed.
in the meantime, can someone please help me achieve this simple task.

  • Freeze Frame Duration Selection Is Incorrect When Using PAL Projects ?

I have done a search of the FCE and FCP forums but can find no information. This was originally posted in the FCP forum but is equally applicable to FCE.
Over here in Europe an apparent bug has been noticed connected with FCP 5.1 and FCE 3.5 (which is based on it) when using PAL projects.
To begin with, the default Freeze Frame time in the User Preferences is 12 seconds yet when stills appear in the Browser they are the normal 10 seconds.
If the duration in the Preferences is altered, the actual time of the picture in the Browser or Timeline is always five sixths of the time set.
This curiously is the same figure you get if you compare NTSC and PAL frame rates. PAL has five sixths the number of fps as NTSC.
So if in the preferences I set 6 seconds, I get 5 seconds in the Browser. Three seconds gives an actual time of around two and a half seconds and so on.
I must stress that it is only FCP 5.1 and FCE 3.5 that appear to be affected.
Earlier versions eg. FCE 1.0.1 and FCE 3.0 behave perfectly.
We don't know the situation with FCP 6 as we have not yet had the opportunity to test it.
You can replicate the problem by altering your Easy Setup to DV-PAL and look at the Freeze Frame Duration in the preferences.
Then import a photo into the Browser.
Alter the duration in the preferences and import another photo.
I am sure you will see that there is a large discrepancy between the chosen duration and the actual.
Is this a known problem and is there a simple way around it ?
    Ian.

    CORRECTION !
It has been pointed out that the Freeze Frames are NOT affected by this bug - only the IMPORTED STILL PICTURES.
Incidentally, for any PAL user whose maths is not too good (like mine), here is a table of corrections:-
    Freeze Frame Discrepancy.
From Final Cut Pro 5.1 and Final Cut Express 3.5 onwards there is a bug that makes the chosen Freeze Frame time WHEN IMPORTING STILL PICTURES differ from the actual time when using PAL settings.
This table tells you what time (in seconds and frames) to set your preferences in order to achieve an actual time:-
    Desired Time.......... Set Preferences
    01:00.......... 01:05
    02:00.......... 02:10
    03:00.......... 03:10
    04:00.......... 04:15
    05:00.......... 06:00
    06:00.......... 07:00
    07:00.......... 08:10
    08:00.......... 09:10
    09:00.......... 10:15
    10:00.......... 12:00

  • 720x480 menu size in PAL Project

    Hi there...
I've just started using Encore CS5 and have a problem I never experienced in CS2 previously.
I've made a PAL project, but whenever I create a menu, it creates at 720x480 which is NTSC size and clearly wrong. I can't find any way to change this to the correct size. Help!

When you create the Encore project, it has an option for NTSC or PAL. Once you select PAL, the Encore library will give you PAL size menus.
Edit: I realize you say you created a PAL project, but I cannot get it to create an NTSC menu when I set the project to PAL. Check your project settings to see that it is PAL.

  • Is there a way to convert an existing NTSC project to a PAL project?

I searched the Encore CS3 manual and all four Encore forums before starting this thread.  Apologies if I missed the answer.
In Encore CS3, apparently one is only allowed to specify NTSC or PAL when starting a new project.  If I try File->Project Settings on an existing project, I can change the Authoring Mode between DVD and Blu-ray, but the Television Standard edit box is grayed out and cannot be changed.
I often need to release projects in both NTSC and PAL standards, and it is a royal PITA to have to start a new PAL project, import the exact same assets as for my NTSC project, then rebuild all my menus, buttons, timelines, chapters, etc.
Can the conversion be done?  Am I missing an obvious method?  If not, why is it that the same assets can only be bound to a given standard when importing?

I understand your concern. I don't know for sure yet myself as the client had yet to mail the discs to Italy last time I talked to them.
However, I would check to see if the people on the forum are saying they won't work because they made a mistake in changing the parameters in ifoedit or if everything was correct and it still didn't play. Also, once you make the discs, even if everything is correct, they certainly won't play in American DVD players that aren't multi-region.
Also, ifoedit is a really simple free program you can download. If you google it you should be able to find it quickly.
From the quick look at the link I gave you, it looked like a rudimentary explanation of how to do it. I need to find for you the web site I found when I did this a couple months ago. I know I saved the info somewhere on my hard drive. I will try to find it later tonight after my kids go to sleep, ha!
Yes, the files you need to change are the ones that are created when you export to folder in Encore. The .VOBs and the .IFO extensioned files (that you open and edit in the program). After you change the IFO files, you can take those files including the .VOBs into a dvd burning program like nero or roxio and burn a dvd-video (not data).
If you have to change the language of the menus and all that, than you'll have to re-author the dvd in encore anyway you may as well do it through encore.

  • NTSC assets cannot be imported into PAL projects.

Hi, i have exported .mov from FCP and when i try to import it into DVD Studio Pro i get the message,
NTSC assets cannot be imported into PAL projects, WHY, it is not an NTSC asset ?
    HELP
    Paul

Do not use H.264. Use Pro Res or send the timeline straight from Final Cut to Compressor an a PAL preset (or one that you make yourself.) I prefer sending out self-contained versions in case I need to re-rencode or want to make items for various formats.
Movie setting up Compressor *in case you need it) is [here|http://www.dvdstepbystep.com/compressor.mov] Make sure to use PAL and/or make sure you make your preset PAL

  • Authoring a DVD for both PAL & NTSC regions - convert pal project to ntsc?

    Hello gurus
I have programmed and built a DVD in DVDSP for PAL regions. But my cleint has come back to me and asked for an NTSC version.
I have re-encoded all assets for NTSC but am now struggling to find a simple way to convert the programming. DVDSP is asking me to remove all assets and menus and basically re-programme the whole disk again...
Do any of you peeps have any quick fixes???
    Thank you in advance
    Jay

There is no reason why you can't save the PAL project as a new project - NTSC version - then take out all the assets that are video (and therefore PAL) then change the project to NTSC settings. This way the basic structure is there - you will need to reconnect stuff etc and you may find that buttons you have created "disappear" from the menu screens (due to the different frame size of NTSC and PAL)
I have done this in the past where projects had scripts and the like and were fairly complex - it's not ideal but might save some time in redoing the project

  • Ntsc dvd from pal project

I am working in an off-line HD PAL project (at DNxHD 36) on Avid Media Composer and I need to create a SD DVD to send to the US. I exported my sequence as PAL QT and now I've brought it into Compressor on my Mac but I'm a bit overwhelmed by the format conversion options. Any ideas about what to use would be gratefully received. I have DVD Studio Pro + Toast 8 too.
    Thanks

In Compressor 2 (at least the one on one of my machines) in settings->Apple-Advanced Format Coversions you will see options for PAL/NTSC and you can start there and convert to the high end NSTC then encode to m2v. You should see some HD Uncompressed formats that should work to make a good self contained movie then encode that to m2v. I found the two step process as oppossed to sending straight to NTSC m2v (or really PAL) seems to work a bit better quality wise.
Definately test on short sections if you can to tweak because the converions can take a long time depedning on the machine and length of material.

  • False error message of overlapping timecodes in PAL project

I am working on importing a .txt subtitle folder for a PAL project and an NTSC project. I have the same document for flowing the subtitles for PAL and NTSC except that the PAL uses colons in the timecode and NTSC uses semicolons.
The NTSC project flowed the subtitles in perfectly. The PAL says that I have overlapping timecodes. I do not. Any clues to why I have this bug?

Thanks Guys. I forgot about my post because I figured it out right after I left it. Any timecode that was 00:00:03:28 00:00:04:00 or 00:00:03:29 00:00:04:01 gave me the issue. I shifted them so that they wouldn't overlap the second and all was well.

  • Cannont add NTSC to Pal project

    Hi,
Ive been busy on this the last few days lol.
after using the "best quality dvd " settings in compressor, I go to import the assets into DVDSP but it says " cannont import NTSC assets into PAL projects"
    1. how is it NTSC and since im in Europe Id like a Pal project. what dvd settings am i doing wrong in compressor?
    Sean

    Hi seanie84
Check your timeline. It sound as if you have made your project in NTSC and not in PAL.
FCP has a default of NTSC when you start a new project from new unless you change all the defaults when you installed FCP.
If not this then your film footage maybe NTSC and when you first put a clip on the time line it would have asked you if you wanted to set the timeline to the same as the clip, if you said YES then it could be that, if so make a new timeline and then copy all footage from old timeline and if asked say NO to "the make timeline same as footage".
If your footage is OK from your timeline, then check your DVD settings in compressor and make sure they are PAL.

  • Is it common for imac 20" isight to have noise problems?

    Hi there,
I ordered imac 20" isight and currently waiting for delivery. I am getting woried over these "buzzing noise" and other noise problems reported over and over again here on these boards. Can more experienced users of these boards, apple insiders and anyone else give me your opinion:
Is it common for imac 20" isight to have noise problems?
I am really considering to get 17" if there is any real information it is considerably more quiet.
    Thank you in advance.

    We have a new 17" and 20"
The 17" is virtually silent, the 20" there is some fan noise.
I find it annoying, although it is 100% quieter than my old PowerMac, which I got used to!

  • After Effects export as Premiere Pro project weird PAL/NTSC problem

This post is not a question. It's here, because I've found a solution and want to share with You.
I've noticed a strange problem during export from AE to PR.
    Ok, here I go.
    AE = After Effects CS3
    PR = Premiere Pro CS3
My AE project is D1/DV PAL Widescreen. It is a sequence of slideshow with some video effects applied. I needed that sequence in PR. I was happy to find a new feature - export as premiere pro project (new for me - i am pretty rookie ;). Thaks to this feature I have saved most of my disk space that is always to low. But, like every first try, this one was not perfect too. I had two problems.
    Problem no 1.
I opened exported project in PR and saw message like "video effect AE.CC COMPOSITE not present".
Whole composition was working perfectly except that one video effect that was fundamental for this project.
*Solution was as easy as it can be. I've just copied that effect from AE plugin folder to PR plugin folder. It worked for this.
    Problem no 2
Like says AE Help "When you export an After Effects project as an Adobe Premiere Pro project, Adobe Premiere Pro uses the settings from the first composition in the After Effects project for all subsequent sequences."
Project settings in PR was exactly D1/DV PAL Widescreen. So where is the problem You ask?
Therefore why my Timeline works in NTSC 29,97 frame rate if all settings match PAL 25 frame rate?! I don't know.
*Solution to fix this annoying bug is to create a new project in PR with all settings for D1/DV PAL Widescreen in this case. Than just import that PR project exported from AE. Now timeline works like it should in PAL frame rate.
    That's it.
I hope this post is helpful, because I didn't find any answer for this here in Adobe forum.

Who's says that Microsoft can't debug?
I used msconfig, first disabling startup items, -same result.
Enabled all startup items, disabled all non-microsoft services - AE worked!
I re-enabled each service in turn until AE crashed.
The fault was related to an item for a video streaming device I have in my house.  It was Monsoon-multimedia's Vulkano Service.  Sometimes under the old name of Hava, this is an app that acts like a sling-box to send my Cable TV to my screen.  It does load a couple of virtual devices in device manager, and uses a proprietary codec.
I uninstalled the vulkano streamer application and rebooted the external Vulkano device.  I reinstalled the Vulkano and verified it connected to the device and could stream.  Once it did, I tried AE again and IT WORKED!
I wonder if simply rebooting the Vulkano would have fixed it.  Its like opening the garage door to turn on the refridgerator.
    Thanks for the help!
    Jim
