ISight external no picture recieved by others

Hi
Firstly Macbook iSight works fine when video chatting through lan to web - no problems!
Secondly G4 with external iSight 'appears' to work fine -ie picture preview, sound etc but when connected outside lan the recipient cannot see any pictures - sometimes they get sound. However if we connect using Skype video - no problem all works fine - on Skype and sometimes it can 'kick' iChat into working properly if then try and connect using iChat.
All ports on router and Mac opened as per the Ralph Johns instructions.
So why would the video on the G4 iSight not be recieved? Router appears okay if the Macbook can send and receive okay - problem would appear to be on the G4 then? But Skype video chats can work fine and sometimes the iChat video can work fine but not normally!
So what suggestions might you have please?
Cheers

Hi
First have you set the Quicktime streaming setting, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed, set to 1.5mbps(dont use automatic)
In ichats prefs click on video and change bandwidth limit to NONE.
Restart iChat.

My quick look did not find any drivers, but as stated in the first link that the search returned,

a working external (Firewire) iSight should be auto-detected, at least by Vista.
Although I no longer use Windoze, I have seen reports in Apple Discussions that Windows will recognize the Firewire iSight's camera. However, the microphone is different. I have never seen any verified report that Windows can connect to iSight's great microphone. While that may have changed in Vista or Win7, it seems to me that the only way to take full advantage of external iSight's full capability is to use it on a Firewire equipped Mac.
FWIW, while answering researching for this answer, I came across this blog that might be of interest:

If all else fails, the simpler approach may be to buy a Windows-compatible USB webcam. They come in great variety of prices (and features.)

In other words, when time machine backs up again, will it delete the files from the back up that I have deleted from my computer?

No, I do not believe so. Time Machine would keep all those now-deleted files in previous backups, and as time goes by those backups might be deleted if you needed room, but it would still keep one backup from each day in last month, as well as one from each week forever, as long as you don't start running out of room, then just the oldest would be deleted to make room if needed.
I use a backup drive about double the size of my drive to be backed up, so I would guess it will never get to the point where deleted files being replaced by new ones being backed fill up that drive to the point where backups actually have to get deleted.

How to upload all my pictures, contacts, and other things from my old iPhone

If you want everything copied over then you can copy your iTunes downloads over to your computer's iTunes library by connecting it and doing File > Devices > Transfer Purchases and you can then backup up your old phone via File > Devices > Back Up - you can then restore that backup onto your new phone (or iPad as this is the Using iPad forum).
    Backups and restores : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4079
Transfer content to a new device : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2109 (you can also backup/restore via iCloud, but not all iTunes content is redownloadble, so you might not get all items copied over).

    4. Press +.  This will make a list of recent contacts pop up.
    5. Click on the info button number of the contact you are trying to reach.
    6. Remove from Recents
    7. Try to compose another message
    8.  If the message attempts to send as blue (imessage), press on the message.
9 Option to send as SMS will appear (as long as they have SMS turned on.

  • Mid 2009 13" MBP iSight camera bad picture quality in photo booth

My daughter's stock mid 2009 13" MBP 2.26 ghz intel core two duo has a problem with the isight camera. The isight camera is built in to the screen. The isight camera works some of the time flawlessly and other times it comes out real grainy and with small colored pixels all over the screen like colored static (about 20% to 30% of the photo booth screen is affected but the rest of the screen outside of the photo booth app is unaffected). She only uses it in photo booth but we've tried the iChat app and the same thing happens there too, once she couldn't get the MBP to connect to the isight camera (it just showed a black photo booth screen), so she closed the lid of her MBP and reopened it and it worked. All of the software and firmware is up to date and we've tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC, it didn't do anything to fix the problem. It seems like there's a wire loose in the computer from the screen to the computer base, only because I can move the screen back and forth and the picture quality changes, the amount of static on the picture will move, go away or get worse. I had the screen changed in early 2010 (January or February) (the MBP was about 5 or 6 months old then) at the apple store under warranty due to dirt under the screen's glass (manufacturing defect). The photo booth picture static problem comes and goes, but here lately it comes more than it goes. The screen in general is in good shape and doesn't have any detectable problems with it, it has a good picture and no dead pixels, the problem seems to be only isolated to the isight camera. Can some one help with this problem? How long of a warranty is given on the warranty repairs (like the screen change they did in early 2010)? If apple does a repair on it and finds a wire that has rubbed the insulation off of it on a hinge causing a short and the isight problem, as a result of a sloppy repair from the first warranty repair, will they cover it under warranty again even if it's been over a year since they changed the screen? Also how honest will apple be if they do find out it is a problem caused from the first screen replacement, will they own up to their mistake? If I don't agree with apple's repair decision, can I get a second opinion from an outside source, third party, and if it's diagnosis different than apple's and can be proven, can I still get apple to do and pay for the repairs and labor if it turns out to be their fault from the first warranty screen replacement?
The reason why I'm asking is, I took my wife's white macbook in about a year ago for the famous cracked top cover replacement (under warranty) and when I got the computer back, the isight camera didn't work, so I gave it back, they took it apart a look at it and said there was nothing wrong with it and gave it back, then the screen wouldn't come on so after 4 hours at the Apple store they decided to send it to Austin, TX. for repairs (I'm in Ft. Worth TX.). Apple in Austin said it needed a new main board. They said the old one had water damage to it. We never had water anywhere near the computer, not even in the same room. It was working fine when we took it in, we took it in just to get the plastic top case, that cracks all of the time, replaced under warranty. And then they wanted us to pay for an $800 main board because some how while they were doing the top cover replacement it got water damaged. I argued with them and they finally gave me a one-time offer of them paying for half of the repair and labor or if I disagreed or left the store I would have to pay the whole amount if I chose to have the repairs done. So I ended up having to pay $467 for a year old macbook main board that was water damaged in their possession during their repairs. I like Apple and their products but I am worried about giving my daughter's MBP over to them for repairs because of this incident, it's an honesty issue with how honest they will be with what they find because they won't give back the old parts for analysis by a third party to verify their diagnosis.
Thanks for any info and advice anyone can give.

    Hi,
As a personal note I find long posts like this hard to read if they are not broken up in to paragraphs.
As I say it is  a personal thing.
I can give you some information about the camera and laptops over the past few years.
Basically in early Laptops of the MacBook Pro and MacBook range the cable did tend to fray at the point where it passed through the hinge.  It did take a well used laptop that had the lid open and closed frequently to cause this.  (your 2009 model might just be in that group - I have no firm dates or models I am afraid)
Later models have this rerouted so that this does not happen.
However the cable has then tended to get pulled from the camera end and become loose.
This On Line Self fix site has pages about some models  (The one I have linked to may not be yours)
I have linked in to later pictures in the sequence but there are navigation points to work back to the start.
Note:- they use pretty specifc specialest tools as well in these pics.
Doing this would certail Void any Warranty you have left.
From Posts mainly in the iChat and the iSight areas I have gathered that it seems common for Apple to replace the Screen as a whole rather than fiddle with getting solely at the camera.
Apple has this article on Trouble Shooting an iSight
Basically it says try several apps then try logging in on another Mac User account to see if it is App based or User based or in fact System wide.
If System wide then resetting the SMC/PMU is the only suggested fix.  (Which I did read you had done)
In addition to that I would add that testing should be done in different lighting conditions.
Lighting in the evening or dark that is good enough to read buy is not always good enough for the camera or is not illuminating the right areas.
Some people have reported that Starting the computer in Safe Mode (then Rebooting afterwards) seems to help.  (it clears out some caches and starts up with reduced extensions)
As to actual Repairs and any Warranty that may still be in place I cannot say.
I can say that when people post about problems with repairs a certain stores someone else will tend to post that their experience was different.
You seem to report two different experiences with the two computers yourself.

  • How to use built-in iSight & external Firewire iSight simultaneously?

The solutions I've found here and elsewhere, about launching iChat first so it "controls" the internal iSight and will force the firewire iSight to work, does not work. With Quicktime and Photo Booth, I stll get the feed from the internal camera.
iChat has a dropdown menu showing "Built-in iSight" and "iSight". But when "iSight" is selected, the message "Camera is off" appears.
What is the definitive method for using the built-in iSight and the firewire iSight simultaneously?  Thank you.

    Hi,
Several answer to the implied questions.
By Default iChat will choose the camera listed in the iChat menu > Preferences > Video section > camera drop down.
(If there is only one camera this drop down does not appear)
The External iSight may need it's iris opened if it is plugged in but you are being told it is Off.
However also you may benefit from ticking the check box about an External Camera at the bottom of the same pane.
    As for "Simultaneously" http://b-l-a-c-k-o-p.com/CamCamX.html
Other VJ type apps or that will do VJ type stuff are listed here under Movie Capture.

  • Imac iSight external video adapter

My original display on the iMac iSight is damaged. I noticed the external video port and may I assume that I could use it to run it that way. But the problem is figuring which adapter to use.  Somewhere is mentioned PN M9321 G/A and PN 9320 G/A but when I go to the store to purchase it it does not say that it is suitable for my PPC iMac. It does say that is suitable for intel I Mac. If anyone would please let me know what is to do.
    Thanks in advance

After a search in two different directions, I found some information on what may be the correct VGA adapter for mirroring the internal display to an external; a page link and a product number. Appears to be obsoleted, but a call to Apple (main online store, or local Apple Store) should let you know if you'll be looking for used online, etc. Could be there is a new part number for this, or perhaps some authorized reseller has old stock? or a lucky find.
The adapter in question probably fit a few different models of that vintage, so someone online may have one if it truly is obsoleted. Some look similar but do not work the same.

  • ISight: External Firewire 400 (My problem solved)

    Hi folks,
Like many others I have been unable to use my iSight and I discovered what my issue was. Maybe someone else is having this exact problem.
I have a 2009 Mac Pro with FW800. I don't have/didn't purchase a 800/400 adapter, but instead was using a Belkin PCI USB 2.0/Firewire 400 card I purchased YEARS ago. The several times I had tried to get this camera working I had nothing, but trouble. On a few occasions the computer would just boot to a black screen. I figured the card was damaged, but I installed it in my G4 DA running Tiger and it worked fine as well as the iSight.
Today I tried again. Same problem. The card was recognized in the profiler and USB worked in it, but still no iSight. I pulled my computer out and looked to see if one of the ports was damaged. What I did notice was the firewire ports are vertical and the top of the ports were slightly slid under the PCI slot cage dividers. I loosened the screw and gently moved the card downward and centered the ports in the PCI cage then re-tightened it. I plugged in the iSight and low and behold it worked!
The problem was when the plug was inserted into the firewire port the outside contact was touching the computer case and causing some kind short. If I hadn't gotten real close to the port to look for damage I would never had noticed it. So check the clearance of the firewire ports on your PCI card if you're using one and make sure the plug isn't touching.

Thanks for letting us know what worked for you.

    (1) Because you are asking about a non-Apple item, your retailer or Microsoft may have the best answers for how to use their product with your System. If you do not get the answer you need here, try those sources.
    (2) Your posted system info shows 13" MacBook Air (2010) Mac OS X (10.6.6) but you say you are using your LifeCam on an unidentified "desktop (external monitor)".
If you need to post back for clarification or more suggestions, please tell us what desktop, OS, and display you are using with your LifeCam. If you are using Windows® on a Mac, please tell us how you have installed it and what application exhibits the distortion.
Until then, I will offer some suggestions you can consider based on the assumption that you are using a Mac Desktop with Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later and are NOT using Windows®. If my assumption is wrong, stop now and post back the information requested above.
    (3) In Mac OS, *software runs webcams*. Everything you need is included in 10.4.11 (or later) and the app being used. Some third party software can conflict with the Mac's software.
Therefore, *if you installed any software that came with your LifeCam*, my first suggestion is that you uninstall it now. Be sure to follow the instructions on how to uninstall. Do NOT merely drag something to the trash unless that is what MicroSoft's instructions direct.
Restart your Mac and test again after uninstalling to see if the problem is resolved.
    (4) If your problem persists, search Help in the application you use with your Microsoft LifeCam Cinema to see if one of the topics helps you.
For instance, if your problem occurs when using iMovie, search Help for "aspect ratio" (without the quote marks.) You may only need to configure as explained in this article (also available in your Mac's iMovie Help):

  • Built-In isight not showing picture

    **Please Help!**
I have a built-in isight camera that is not working at the moment. I have tried everything that apple tells you about troubleshooting isight, created new account, repair permissions, empty caches, but nothing worked. Could not find isight preferences to delete.
When I open, say PhotoBooth, Skype, ichat, my camera turns on (LED green light is on) but no picture is showing up. Do not know if there us a setting that turns the image off and i might have somehow or what. It was working one day and the next nothing.
Does anyone have any solutions for this problem?

Ok, so i found the answer by calling apple support.
    They told me to
    1. Shut off the computer.
    2. Turn on the computer.
    3. RIGHT AFTER you turn on the computer, simeltaneously hold down the command, option, 'p', and 'r' keys. This will reset the computer. You want to reset your computer two times, for a total of three start-ups (or three biiiiings that you hear at the start of the computer.) DO NOT LET GO OF THE KEYS UNTIL the third biiiing (or startup sound)!
Once you hear that third biiiiing, just let the computer do its normal startup cycle. This process resets the perimeter RAM, which is used by applications such as safari and ichat.
    Good luck!

  • Isight grainy/fuzzy picture

    hi
I have had my macbook pro for 5 months now and my isight cam does not display the same clear picture that it showed me when I first got it. Is there any thing you can suggest I do?
    Thanks

I'd suggest resetting the power management.
Shut down, remove the ac power and the battery.
Press the power button for 10 seconds.
Put the battery back in and reconnect the ac power.
    Start the machine up.
Try isight see if this has helped.
    Best of luck

  • Isight (external) low frame rate

    Hi All--
Have had my external iSight for almost 2 years now (got it off of a friend). It has been working fine except for the past two days. Every time I would start a video chat my frame rates would drop immensely... I didn't have many things running at the time, just the normal when its worked before. I checked previous posts where they said to change the streaming rate, fix the permissions, nothing seems to work. I am running off of a router and on cable internet.
Any suggestions you can provide I'd greatly appreciate..as this just happened over the past few days.

What sort of Framerate are you getting ?
Read this page and scroll down at least to the Known Issue
    http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page16.html
Do you have any of these items ?
iChat 4 adds to this List with Spirited Away , non updated Seti@home Screen Saver and app and a couple of other things I have forgotten the name of right now.
Can you list anything you have installed in the last few days to see if it jogs my memory please ?

I've tried looking the answer up on google, but I've come up empty handed. Do I need to change permissions somewhere? I've tried setting everyone to have read and write acess on both machines and that didn't work either.
My macbook that works perfectly with the hard drive is running snow leopard. the other macbook is running leopard. i'm not 100% certain what brand my external is but it says firewire800/usb2.0 on it.

I bought a 160gb iPod classic every time I try to put music on my external hard drive only copy up to 1500 songs and then freezes Itune me and I can not close, asks me to restore the ipod as factory, and do nothing . I try to close the program and itune will not let me, I try to turn off the computer and I can not shut, I looked to see if the iPod disk errors and says it's okay. I restored it about 8 times and I've put music and videos but I always delete everything. I crushed and Selection Menu to enter diagnostic sistemade or ipod and I put the manual test where I enter the IO and q tells me everything is fine. I have already given several Format directly from the Windows 7 and anything either, I always delete everything from passing over 1300 songs and I congeal whole team. No longer have to think of this company because Apple gives no solution has this issue.
