ISight firewire and the Xserve...

I can not get this thing to work. Anyone else try it?

Hello Carl.
I do not use Xserve, but my external iSights still work without problem on both of my Snow Leopard Macs.
All driver software for external iSight is installed as part of Mac OS. _No separate software came with either of my external iSights_. Perhaps Xserve is different?
Here follow some things that you can consider +if they make sense with Xserve+.
(1) From your posted system info, I see you have access to Macs running both Mac OS X (10.6.4) and Mac OS X (10.6.2). Does your external iSight work on any of your SL Macs?
(2) Does Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 give any hints applicable to your Xserve issue?
(3) Have you tried installing the applicable 10.6.4 Combo Update while your external iSight is connected? I do not know whether the installer checks for Apple peripherals, but it seem possible to me that the installer might be testing Firewire to see if external iSight software components are needed.

  • Cardbus slot (And therefore firewire and SD card??) performance very slow after Windows 8.1 update.

    Hi All,
Just updated to Windows 8.1 64 bit from Windows 8. The Cardbus slot speed/bandwidth has dropped considerably to the point that it is now unusable since the update. It worked fine before, although I had a similar problem in the past which was cured by a BIOS update. Since the RICOH chip that controls this slot also control the Firewire and the SD Slot, I was wondering whether these are also affected?
Does anyone else have the same issue? I expect it affects all computer with this chip: T61/X61/R61 etc etc.
Would someone who is on Windows 7 64 bit or Windows 8.0 64 bit mind sending me the pci.sys and pcmcia.sys files so that I can try rolling the drivers back to a previous version?

    Hi @PriyanshuJ ,
I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publically post ( serial numbers and case details).

  • How can I use the built-in Isight camera with an external camera (usb/firewire) at the same time?

How can I use the built-in Isight camera and an external video camera at the same time?
I'm wanting to stream over Oovoo/Skype/etc. using 2 cameras.
    Thanks

Simple question with a not so simple answer.
    (a) If you mean that you want to run multiple apps simultaneously using a different camera with each app, you may encounter computing power limitations.  Digital video is processor intensive.  The only way to know if your Mac can do this it to try it.  If the video does not work together but each app works when it it the only app running, you are likely overloading your Mac's ability to process and/or move all the required data in your data bus.  You can get a better indication of whether this is the case by watching your Activity Monitor utility while running the apps you want to use.
    (b) If you mean that you want to have more than one compatible camera connected to your Mac simultaneously for ease of changing between video sources, some, but not necessarily all, apps you are using to operate your camera(s) allow you to select between your cameras.
How you select among connected cameras depends on which application you are using. Here is how camera selection works in a few examples:
    (1) For iChat, you can choose which iSight you use in the "Camera:" choices bar in iChat > Preferences... > Audio/Video that appears when more than one compatible camera is connected. Although your camera choices will be different, the choices bar will look something similar to the Preferences settings shown here:
If you cannot see the "Camera" choices bar, your Mac is recognizing only one (or none) of your cameras. In that case, consider the suggestions fromhttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 for iSight problems or refer to your other camera's documentation for help.
This particular choices bar solution applies ONLY to iChat. Most other applications also have settings that allow you to choose which camera to use. However, they do not all work the same way.
    (2) For instance, iMovie HD's camera choice is NOT set via Preferences. When you have more than one compatible camera connected, iMovie6 HD uses a drop-down menu choice something like this (depending on which version of iMovie you use):
Note: Because I had no built-in iSight connected when I made this example, and because my external iSight was not connected, the drop-down menu showed only "Time Lapse." Because your Mac has a built-in iSight, your built-in iSight would show in the drop-down menu even when no other camera is connected. Connecting an additional Mac compatible webcam should allow you to choose either camera.
Other iMovie versions work slightly differently.
iMovie 9 (from iLife '11) uses a different camera choice button shown in this article:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/9.0/en/mov39f84285.html
iMovie 8 (from iLife '09) is slightly different as explained in this article:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/10172.html
In general, you can use your Mac's help for the application in use to find out how to select among more than one connected camera.
    (3) Photo Booth in Snow Leopard 10.6.x and later uses the Photo Booth > Camera menu command to select which camera to use.
Note for readers with older Mac OS X: The previous version of Photo Booth that came with Tiger (10.4.x) is such a simple, basic app that it offers no menu selectable choice. Unless your built-in iSight is already occupied as the camera being used by some open application before you launch Photo Booth, Photo Booth will use ONLY your built-in iSight.
However, you can use the trick from ¶ 4 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302781 to let Photo Booth use an external camera.
(If you have an external Firewire camera connected, it may be used in preference to any USB webcam. If that is a problem for you, merely disconnect the problem Firewire device.)
    (4) For FaceTime, launch the app and click the Video menu item.
If your Mac recognizes more than one connected compatible camera, a "Camera" section listing the cameras from which you can choose will appear there. Clicking on the desired camera name will let you select the one you want as shown in this image from my Mac Pro and LED Cinema Display:
If your Mac recognizes only one compatible camera, the "Camera" section will not appear in the Video menu, but FaceTime will automatically use the connected camera that is recognized by OS X.
    (5) I do not use Skype oir Oovoo.  For those or other apps, see Help for each app for info on how to select your desired camera.

  • Imac G5 won't start with Isight plugged into the firewire port.

I went to turn on my Imac today and it wouldn't start. After checking all the usual culprits (power strip, outlet and power chord) which were not the problem, I proceeded by unplugging all the external devices from the back ports. After unplugging the computer for a few seconds and plugging it back in (which I read resets any power issues), it turned back on. I plugged my Isight camera back in and turned it on and the computer suddenly shut off. I reproduced this quite a few times and it did the same thing. It won't even turn on if any device is plugged into the firewire port. Does anyone have a clue of what this conflict could be or experienced anything similar.
I would greatly appreciate any input.
    Thanks in advance,
    Daniel

Welcome to Discussions - try resetting your PRAM, if that doesn't work, I'm afraid there is something wrong with your logic board, where the firewire bus is located. The best thing to do would be to take it in for servicing.

  • Firewire and USB hard drives won't mount on Xserve - 10.5.8

I have a triple interface drive set for rotating backups, and they've stopped mounting on my Xserve. Disk Utility can't see them at all, but System Profiler sees when I plug them in. The drive specifics for the volume are missing, but they ID correctly. Same drives plugged into an iMac and a MacBook Pro mount perfectly every time, both over USB and Firewire. Disk Utility via the iMac shows no problems at all. I've tried rebooting the Xserve... doesn't help.
I kinda need my backup to run on my server. Thoughts on how to resolve?

Sounds like you should be posting to the Xserve forum.

  • ISight (firewire external) and Adobe Onlocation software

Adobe requires a firewire to work with onlocation.
Is the external ISight firewire camera compatible with onlocation?
Has anyone tried to work with this on a Mac?
Specifically, I want to use the wave generator and vectorscope feature within the Adobe software.

    Hi,
I have no information on this.
Having said that I have not heard of an App that could not see an External iSight.
I did find this http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405857.html that lists known issues and some problems with some sample rates and Audio Card abilities.

Yes, use a Firewire cable and the FW to Tbolt adaptor.

Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

No, you can not directly attach one drive to two computers at the same time, period. In particular, you can't use it for Time machine this way.

  • Our iMac (intel, 11.2) freezes up when using Time Machine for Back Ups.  We have 16GB of RAM and the BU drive is 1 TB on firewire.

A FW cable would be far faster & Easier, but with Ethernet you need a compatible version of Migration Assistant running on both Macs.

  • What camcorder would you recommend to buy that has the firewire and ability

to upload directly to imovie? I have a JVC MG20 which is great but gave me all sorts of complications in adjusting/changing settings etc just to get it into imovie. Im now intending on buying a new one in the next few months which will make my life simpler and i would like peoples opinions and recommendations. The JVC i have now is a hard drive style which i like, dont want to mess around with dvd discs in the camcorder, much rather do my editing on the mac and make a dvd from that.
    Thanks for any advice given...

Really any Sony or Canon that has firewire and DV Tape...do not get a DVD nor a Hard drive camera, though. They are NOT compatible with iMovie at this time.

  • Hooking mac mini up to emac with firewire, and using emac as the display

Is this possible? Would it work to hook up the mac mini via firewire to the emac and use the emac disaplay to run the computer? Thanks

    I second that!
This is a question that is asked with remarkable regularity, and while it is possible to connect the two systems and to 'run' the mini either as a remote hard drive (a very expensive way of gaining slow external storage) or remote control it, the former is an inefficient use of the mini and the latter only allows you to open a window onto the mini from the host system, where performance is somewhat limited.
Better in this sort of situation to sell the old system and use the money to buy a new display for the mini, or if the old system is needed and funds very limited, to look for a used display.

  • Lost the access to the first partion  of the firewire drive and the data ?

    Hello to everybody,
after i moved 5,5GB Data from my internal harddisk, HFS+ , to my external Firewire drive, FAT 32 formatted for compatilibilty with a PC, i lost the access to the first partion of the firewire drive and the data. At first after having appearently finished copying the data a lot of ununderstable numbers and letters appeared on the first partion and couldn't be opened.
Using first aid showed the following messages:
