ISight, FireWire Port, eMac

I am trying (to help a friend) to connect an isight to an eMac running OS X 2.8 -- there are 2 FireWire ports on the side. When I plug in the cord, the camera's light turns on for about 3 seconds. iChat has no indication that there's a video camera attached. The System Controller does not even mention FireWire ports. I have read thru this topic and tried unplugging the computer (& camera) for 1 hr & then turning on the computer to reset the FireWire ports. Nada --
Will the camera turn on if the ports are not "hot?" I DO see them on the side of the computer! They ARE here! I have nothing else to test the camera on -- or to test the ports with. Any thoughts?
I took off the back and pushed anything that looked remotely like a button -- There was nothing, really, that pushed back! I took out the cards and reseated them. I unhooked the board and reseated that, too. In the Apple Sysyem Profiler, under Devices and Volumes, the FireWire Port says () --
I am beginning to think that this eMac 10.2.8 is not capable of video. The iChat turns on when I plug in the iSight, however there is no indication that it has video power like on my iMac -- There's no video tab here. There's no iSight listed in the system profiler.
Is that possible that I can't use video on this machine?
Thanks!
(Please disregard MY computer stuff listed -- this question is NOT about MY computer)
Thanks!

need to upgrade iChat & iSight -- Then all's well.

  • Imac G5 won't start with Isight plugged into the firewire port.

I went to turn on my Imac today and it wouldn't start. After checking all the usual culprits (power strip, outlet and power chord) which were not the problem, I proceeded by unplugging all the external devices from the back ports. After unplugging the computer for a few seconds and plugging it back in (which I read resets any power issues), it turned back on. I plugged my Isight camera back in and turned it on and the computer suddenly shut off. I reproduced this quite a few times and it did the same thing. It won't even turn on if any device is plugged into the firewire port. Does anyone have a clue of what this conflict could be or experienced anything similar.
I would greatly appreciate any input.
    Thanks in advance,
    Daniel

Welcome to Discussions - try resetting your PRAM, if that doesn't work, I'm afraid there is something wrong with your logic board, where the firewire bus is located. The best thing to do would be to take it in for servicing.

  • ISight via a firewire port on an OXFORD IDE external drive

My Powerbook G4 has an OXFORD IDE external hard drive connected to its one firewire port. Having connected my iSight camera into a spare firewire port on the ext HD neither iChat not iMovie recognise it. If I plug my VideoCam into the ext HD both iChat and iMovie are able to use it. How do I tell iChat and iMovie where to find iSight?

    Hello Peter,
A "not uncommon" problem. iSight draws significant power and can be picky about what and how it shares your Mac's Firewire port(s).
See the Possible hardware or software conflicts with iSight. FAQ for my best suggestions.

  • EMAC 1.2 mg 2 Dead firewire ports

EMAC 1.2 mg, 2 dead firewire ports neither will mount, but have power

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You should reset the Power Management Unit (PMU) by removing the user access panel and locating the push button switch to the right of the drive connector and just below the right end of one of the two DIMM slots on your logic board. To do so…
    • shut down the computer
    • unplug all cables EXCEPT the power cord from your machine but not from a grounded AC source
    • place it face down on a stable, level surface
    • remove the user access door by removing the center screw which mounts it to the frame
    • equalize your electrical potential to that of the machine by touching the exposed metal case
    • once you have done so, remove the power cord from your machine
    • do not move around, which would change your electrical potential
    • press the PMU reset button ONCE and once only, as second and subsequent presses can crash the PMU itself, and rapidly drain your backup battery
    • wait 10 seconds, replace the AC cord and power on the computer using the case mounted switch
Replace the plate, place the machine upright, and reconnect your keyboard and mouse.
Plug in a FireWire device to see if it appears in the Finder as a mountable volume and verify this by using the Disk Utility if it is a storage device.
If your issue has been resolved, it is the PMU reset which has done so. If you have not but still have power available at the FireWire interconnect socket, then your FireWire PHY controller is likely damaged, a condition which requires a logic board repair or replacement.

  • My external hard drive and cd burner does not appear on the desktop of my mini.  Using Firewire adapter from old to new firewire ports.

I have a new Mac Mini (2013) and older external hard drive (Lacie) and cd reader/burner (EzQuest).  Both have the original Firewire ports and the Mini has the new kind.  I bought a cable with both kinds of ends but I plug them in and they don't show on the desktop.

From what I've heard, sometimes certain devices will not have full functionality if they are FireWire 400 with an 800 adapter. Take Apple's original iSight external webcam. It had FireWire 400, and people report using a converter cable will give them video, but not audio.
When I first got my mini, my usb cd burner wasn't recognised by Finder or Disk Utility. After repairing disk permissions and a reboot, it worked fine.

  • Recent Leopard Update Messes up Cinema Display Firewire Ports

Okay, this is really odd. I have a Lacie Porsche DVD-RWDL Firewire drive hooked up to my Mac Pro via my 23" Cinema display. The cinema display firewire cable was connected directly to the back of the mac pro. Lastly my iSight was connected to the open firewire port on the Lacie. This worked just fine for the longest time under both Tiger and up until very recently in leopard.
Now tho the DVD Drive is not recognized by any programs (Toast, etc) or by System Profiler (Unknown Device) when it is connected to the cinema display. Oddly enough it is detected when connected directly to the mac pro (or for troubleshooting sake I tried my G4 cube w/ Tiger... it also detected it). On top of that the iSight will work when plugged into either the Lacie or the Cinema Display... so its not like the cinema display's pots are dead (the USB works fine).
This is pretty obscure I know... but has anyone ran into something similar? I figure its either some very, very weird hardware problem or or one of the many recent updates to leopard has things acting goofy.
    Thanks

I have a similar problem with my 20" cinema display. Try unplugging and replugging the device. That's been working for me, although it is an annoyance.

  • Firewire Port out to lunch! Formac Studio goes with it! Help!

There was a nasty thunderstorm last night in my area. My computer was off the entire time, but upon restarting hours later, I found both my firewire ports out. This morning, one of them came back to life- but when I plugged my Formac studio into it- it no longer is recognized. I tried a few different attempts to get the other port back into action- but no luck. Anyone with suggestions? Anyone have a similar problem with Formac Studio going dead (I did email Formac as well)
    Thanks, Matt

I was having problems with my Formac, iSigh and 8 FW drives.
G5 2x Gighertz, 4gig RAM, two internal drives and the above.
Everything would work until I put the computer to sleep, upon wake-up, neither the isight or the formac would produce an image. Both were just black screens. I would have to unmount the drives, disconnect and reconnect all firewire to make them work again.
I have two firewire hubs, one connecting the isigh and the formac (connected to the FW 400 port) and the other to the 8 drives (connected to the FW 800 port).
After trying just about every combination between the iSight and the Formac, I used a different cable than the original cable with two magnets which the Formac uses and connected it to the Hub with the 8 FW drives. This got me to the point where all I had to do was reset the Formac and both the Formac and iSight would work without disconnecting and reconnecting all the FW devises.
But it also got me thinking what would happen if I used the Formac FW cable to connect the hub to the FW400 port. Maybe that cable would help stabilize the connection... Since it came with the Formac, maybe it would work better for video, right? Well, I connected the Formacs cable to the hub and to the FW400 port. The computer immediately shutdown! After that, neither the 400 nor the 800 ports work. The hub smelled like burned circutry and 3 of the 8 drives have damage to the file structure.
Needless to say I am fumming! What the **** is this cable from Formac? Why does it have what appears to be two magnets? and why would they sell this cable that has the potential to damage an entire system costing thousands of $$s?
I'm doing a file recovery now, but don't have my hopes high on that...
If this cable caused all this, Formac should be put out of business!

  • Older ACD USB/Firewire ports and a Thunderbolt MBA.

I have an older Apple Cinema Display (20) and a Thunderbolt MBA.  Can I use the Firewire ports on the ACD if I use a Thunderbolt to DVI adapter?
Specifically, I have an older iSight external camera (Firewire based) that I would like to use with the ACD whilst the MBA is in clamshell mode.  With the Firewire ports on the ACD, I'm intrigued by how I might access them with the MBA.
    Is this possible?
    TIA,
    eznet

Same here. Since a few weeks, my MacPro ejects USB HDD's as soon as I write or read data on it.
(no I haven't installed something new at this time and all HUB's and HDD's have their own power supply, and yes they have been exchanged, so its not a broken cable or so !!!!!!!!)
After a reset of the NVRAM and PRAM its better for an hour or so, then starts to eject again.  I've seen a lot of communities with exact the same question, but never a solution for it. There is also nothing in the support tab of apple.
Hope someone here can help me out or due to the fact that this is a AplleSupportCommunity, a Apple-Employee may starts to do his job and help this huge amount (I guess there are hundrets or tousand) of mac-user with exact the same problem....
btw: don't agree with MACATTACK2010 that this is a hardware problem, cause there are a lot of people in the
net that ask the same question with brandnew Hardware. I think it's an OS or an Update Bug, or may both.

  • Dead firewire port

Seems my firewire port suddenly died. I tried plugging in my iSight and it's not detected, and I tried a firewire hard drive as well, and that is not detected.
Any steps I should try on my own before contacting Apple for APP repair?

After installing firmware password protection, I found out that it disables your firewire ports.
So I disabled the password, but my firewire ports are still dead, i can use targetmode, but my mini never mounts, I tried connectiong isight and it didnt work also, I did some research on this and found the code that checks the firmware for this setting.
is located on the file IOFireWireController.cpp
it looks to me as if the security-mode is set to none, once it was set to anything else other than "NULL" value it will still disable the firewire. so i tried to set it to NULL also but no luck. My Firewire is dead, and also my other laptop that had a firware password has the same problem. I've tried:
    altopt+of
    setenv security-mode none.
    rest-nvram
    reset-all
    return.
    Then
    reset the PMU.
    but nothing.

  • ISight FireWire with 2010 Mac Pro

I just picked up an iSight FireWire Camera off Craigslist. Since my Mac Pro does not have a FireWire 400 port I picked up a Belkin FireWire 800/400 9-pin to 6-pin cable.
When I plug the iSight into the rear FireWire 800 port iChat starts and the green light on top of the iSight camera is illuminated. I can see video clearly, but there is no audio. I check System Profiler and System Preferences and everything is listed and selected as they should be.
Does anyone have any ideas why I would not be getting any audio?

  • Firewire port & power

    Hello All,
Did Apple alter the power configuration for the firewire 400 ports? I have an adapter (iFire??) that I use to run an old set of the round HK speakers (originally for an old iMac. The adapter takes power from the firewire port and also plugs into the sound out port. It worked fine on my old G4 PB 1.5 and it does work on my wife's new black MB but it doesn't work on my brand new MB C2D.
Any thoughts. The firewire port does work in syncing an old iPod and runs an old iSight camera. Should I have this looked into??
    Thanks....

It would seem so. When I moved from my PowerBook G4 over to my new MacBook Pro I had the same problem with my iFire. At least you know it's not just you...
Looking around the forums it seems like the power output has dropped on the new systems. There are quite a few postings centered around problems with hard driving getting power from Firewire.

  • Older iSight (Firewire 400) on New Mac Mini Intel (Firewire 800)?

Hi! I have an older iSight camera (circa 2003), model number A1023/EMC no. 1950, which uses the older FIrewire 400. It was purchased with one of the first gen Mac Mini's (PowerPC) which I still have.
I've upgraded and now have a new Mini with an Intel Core 2 Duo, and the newer Firewire 800 port. I have a Firewire 400->800 adapter, and when I plug the iSight in, the green light on the camera lights up, but then goes off. The system doesn't recognize the camera (System Profiler/Hardware/FIrewire). iChat doesn't see a camera.
    This is the adapter:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HMTV1I/ref=oxya_ohproduct
Under the profiler/firewire, I see " Firewire Bus: Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec" but no entries for the camera.
Is the problem in the adapter? The computer, or the camera? Is there a way to force the Firewire 800 port speed down to 400? Don't know what to do. Thanks for any advice! --michael

    Hello michael
Connecting your iNtel min's Firewire to any Firewire 400 cable automatically sets the correct speed.
If your iSight and cable will work with other Macs and if Firewire 800 devices will work with your new mini, perhaps your new adapter is faulty.
My method for verifying external iSight function is explained here:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
You will need to add your adapter to the other connectivity devices (ports & cables) that must be tested.
If other Firewire devices can be recognized by your new mini, the next tests I would suggest is to connect your adapter, FW-800 cable, and iSight to your old mini to see whether it still works there. If not, and if you have reset your iNtel mini's Firewire ports, the cable or adapter you have may be defective.
If iSight works with the new cable and adapter on the old mini but not with the iNtel one, apply all relevant suggestions from Apple's iSight Troubleshooting article to your new mini:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
The reset suggested there sometimes restores proper iSight function.
One other possibility is that a different brand of FW800 cable might work for you. Depending on which FW800 cable you are using, this thread may be of interest:

  • Installing a Firewire port into a G3 IMAC

A G3 CRT IMAC with OS9.2 was donatd to our little cable TV station.
It has USB ports, but no Firewire ports. However there seems to be some sort of access expansion hatch.
Question: Is it possible to install a Firewire port on a G3 IMAC of this vintage?
We do community TV and would like to use it as a simple off-line editing computer.
    Thanks,
    Dave Gordon

If this is a tray-loading iMac, you might still be able to find one of Sonnet's Harmoni processor upgrades which also includes a Firewire port. But it's probably not worth the money unless you could find one really cheap. Newer iMacs with Firewire ports show up on eBay regularly for under $100.00, and eMacs frequently appear well under $300.00.

  • Firewire ports seem shot

I connect my iSight & LaCie External Harddrive to my 2 Firewire Ports and I noticed the computer wasn't recognizing these hardware devices, so upon shutdown, unplugging the computer & ultimate restart.....i found that the computer would then recognize these devices....but 5mins later they would vanish. I called Apple Care & we did a hard reset (I think that's the term) or basically started it up holding down 4 keyboard keys ......that fixed the problem, yet again for only 5mins. The AppleCare guy told me that I had to take the computer apart and hit some reset buttons, I really really don't want to take my computer apart.....can anyone else think of a solution. Or are my Firewire ports shot?

    Hey Chris,
This article about troubleshooting" may help you out. Most likely the tech had gotten down to resetting the SMU. Here's an article on resetting the SMU for the RevB and RevC iMacG5s. If the technician talked about taking off the back, you my have a RevA iMac, and you will indeed have to take the back off to access the SMU reset switch. This article has a description of how to reset the SMU for RevA iMacs. I was having this problem with a bad device resetting my Firewire bus. I put the device an another mac and yes indeed, it was not just the iMac. I got a new device and the problem went away. So maybe it's your LaCie drive that's causing the problem? If you have access to another mac you might try it (don't tell your friend what you're doing though...) heh heh.
Let us know how you're progressing, or if this is helpful.

  • Firewire ports go bye-bye

Suddenly I am unable to use devices through my firewire ports. They do not show up in ABOUT THIS MAC, More Info.
    Any clues.....????
    Gracias!!!
    emac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    biffff,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
A momentary powerglitch or plugging in a Firewire device with a faulty ground likely caused teh Firewire bus's fuses to latch up. Reset the eMac's switching Firewire bus triple fuses by removing all peripherals other than the keyboard and mouse, then removing the power cord from the side of the eMac (to remove the trickle current drawn by modern electronics even when nominally off) and waiting 15+ minutes. Then reattach the power cord only and restart. Check Apple’s System Profiler (in Applications/ Utilities) and confirm that the Firewire bus is recognized. Reattach peripherals one at a time, checking System Profiler after each to confirm the addition is recognized. If Firewire drops put of System Profiler after adding a particular device, repeat the process but swap a known-good Firewire cable with the suspect device; that will let you narrow it down to the device or to the cable. An Uninterruptible Power Supply will protect the Mac from power glitches and brownouts.
