Isight freezes up then causes my modem to freeze up

I am having a consistent problem everytime I try to use my Isight camera with iChat. After a few minutes, the video and sometimes the audio freezes up. I can restart it by disconnecting the camera and restarting the session.
But the bigger problem is that after this occurs, my internet connection slows down to the point of a crawl. Re-booting the computer does not solve it. I have to reboot my cable modem (comcast) and my VOIP modem (Motorola/Vonage) since everything locks up.
I talked to Apple and they have no idea. Any help??

Thanks!

Hello dknopper,
Unfortunatly, yes and no... what is your speed on the cable, up and down.. It would be helpful also to know if there is a router or how the computer is connected.. After Permissions Repair, shutdown/restart and w/no other programs working, is the problem the same?
My daughter was on comcast in Chicago, but switched to DSL as she had some problems. Frankly, it sounds like virex or some other program is taking the CPT time.
To eliminate cable problems, run this speed check several times a day to see what kind of results you get:
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
Do it both w/and w/o iChat running and let us know.
(For reference, my Download speed is 4108Kbps Upload 443Kbps)
In the meantime, perhaps someone else will come up with a suggestion?
Respectfully,
Bill Gallagher

  • ISight freezing

My iSight is freezing up on opening. When I hit the small video camera button on the iChat box, the My iSight box comes up....and then the picture freezes. Nothing I have tried can get the video image to behave normally. Running OSX 10.4.4 on a Mac Mini, iChat AV 3.1.1 (v429), and the iSight camera is up to date on firmware as far as I can determine. The only odd thing is that when I look for iSight information through System Profiler it shows 4 iSight units! There's only one connected to this Mac. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Peter

Hello Gilbert, no nothing has changed except perhaps a recent Apple Software update. I did unplug and change the Firewire ports that didn't help at all, but I have not repaired Permissions, I'll try that. Thanks for the suggestions.
    Regards, Peter
did you recently change anything, update anything,
    etc.?
    did you repair permissions?
try unplugging the iSight, restarting and then
plugging it back in, preferably to another firewire
    port.

  • Built-in iSight Freezes when iChat Connection is established

I'm attempting to iChat with friends who have an iMac Duo from my Macbook. Both our cameras work just fine. This has been confirmed using Photobooth. However, the moment we connect their camera image freezes and I receive no image of them is transmitted to me. We've used Connection Doctor to confirm that no video signal is being received on my end, but their getting signal just fine from me.
Things we've made sure of are.
    1. We know from Photobooth and iChat before connection is made that their camera works fine.
    2. We know there are no blocks in place.
    3. At an Apple Operator's suggestion we are both using 100kbps setting to rule out bandwidth issues.
    4. We have both followed the instructions of this article, http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208
One Apple operator suggested we reinstall iChat AV, but there is no way to do so from the Apple website. The Apple Site only goes up to 2.1, and that won't install.
My friends and I are good Apple people with .Mac accounts using iChat (a Mac service) with Mac Products. Also, we both have current Apple Care protection plans. Basically, we're all APPLE! Please help us.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, bobthecopywriter
Sorry you are having problems with video chat. Until you get more good suggestions from Tony, here are a couple more things you can consider:
    (0) Unless you have already tried restarting, shut down everything. Then restart your modem and wait until it finishes its self-test. If you use a router, restart it and let its self-test run. When all self-tests are finished, restart your Mac and try again.
    (1) If the restart does not get things working for you, when you post back, please let us know whether you and your problem contact can successfully text chat. Also, can you successfully audio chat?
    (2) It will usually be simpler to fix one problem at a time. Both you and the chat buddy you are trying to contact should test with others to determine which system is the source of the problem. See this list of Buddy Names for iChat Test for names of testers you can add to your buddy lists.
When testing with anyone other than the "Auto-Respond Test Accounts", I suggest that always text first. Successful video is very unlikely if you cannot get a successful text connection.
    (3) If you cannot connect with anyone, check your internet service, connection, and Check your Broadband Speed. Post back both your DOWNLOAD and UPLOAD speeds.
We will try to offer more specific suggestions based on your responses.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • Occasional iSight freeze.

    Hi:
I use Sightspeed as my video chat software. I would love to use iChat, but the infamous "XXX did not respond" problem has beaten me to a pulp and the Sightspeed alternative has worked well.
    But here's my question.
Every time I turn iSight on, both iChat and Sightspeed compete for the camera...and sometimes the camera freezes (i.e., the green light goes off). When this happens, the only way to un-freeze it is to unplug the Firewire, then plug it in again.
Any thoughts on how I can avoid this? I don't mind that iChat activates whenever I turn on my iSight, because it's a simple matter of "Quitting" iChat. But I'm not terribly happy about my iSight freezing.
FYI...I always turn off iSight between video chats (i.e, twisting the ring and closing the aperature). I assume that others do the same, although maybe I'm wrong about that.
    Thanks.
    Sal

Any thoughts on how I can avoid this? You can stop iChat AV from automatically launching by deselecting the
"Automatically open iChat when camera is turned on"
checkbox near the bottom of the window that opens when you choose the iChat >Preferences... > Video menu choice. I set mine this way.
(I also do NOT have iChat AV as one of my System Preference > Accounts > Login Items that automatically launch at start-up.
iSight can be picky about how and with what it shares your Mac's Firewire ports and the QuickTime audio and video services that is uses. In addition to being aware of Possible hardware or software conflicts, it is good practice to have only one application that uses iSight open at a time if you are having problems. Using only one app at a time avoids OS or software confusion about when you want iSight to work with which app.
re: turning iSight off, see How to turn iSight (really) off.

Wifi is not available where I come from. I have broadband connection where data transmission is through cell sites then to USB modem connected to a computer. The modem draws power from the computer. Will this setup work with the ipad?

iPad requires Wifi (or 3G /LTE) to connect to the Internet. You cannot connect a USB modem to the iPad.
You can create your own WiFi hotspot through your computer for your iPad to connect to, if your computer supports this functionality. All Wifi Macs and many Wifi PCs do. Check your computer manual for how to do it.

  • Isight freezes when importing

purchased isight and upgraded to imovie HD, when I try to record video clips isight freezes however it continues to record sound. Anyone out there have this problem and maybe suggestions on a fix?

Have you tried running a disk repair/ permissions repair and other troubleshooting ideas listed in the following link?
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=89736
Also, I did read somewhere that folks were having problems withe firewire that came with the iSight itself. You may need to replace it.

  • Help...program will freeze, then cause entire computer to freeze

This problem used to be extremely infrequent, but lately (as in the past 2 weeks) I've had this problem at least once a day (sometimes 2 or 3 times).
I did do the recent software update, so that might have something to do with it...anyways, I'll be using a program (say, Safari) and Safari will freeze on a webpage. I can still move the mouse around, but it's stuck on the color wheel thingy. I can't click on anything, so I usually just shut the computer down by holding the power button down, then restarting the computer. The other day, it was Mail that caused the color wheel of death to pop up. Then today, Thunderbird (email application I very recently installed b/c both Mail and Entourage crapped out on me) froze, and again I had to restart the computer.
Does anyone have suggestions of what might be wrong and any advice to fix this issue?
    Thanks!

I've just purchased a G4 17" and forive me if everyone else knows this already but--I was having the same kind of stalling until I checked the running processes and saw this faxjobmgr program using 50% and more of the cpu even while it wasn't doing anything. You need to remove it from the startup items and then kill it, kill it, kill it.

  • ISight Freezes in Photo Booth, then dead

I have a 1st generation macbook and all has been good since except my isight stopped working. At some point, it would run 2 to 5 seconds in photo booth and then freeze. Close PB and green LED stayed on. Had to do a hard shutdown (not a restart) to get it to turn off. The first time, I erased the plist for PB and it solved the issue. A few weeks later, dead again, but tryed all proposed solutions (plis, repair permissions, ...etc - EZ Jim) and nothing work...still starts a few seconds and freezes; then all apps tell me it is in use, even under another account. Funny thing is: To run a test, I installed the drivers on XP (in parallels) and the isight works 100% in parallels. Go back to OS X, and still not working. (NB: The cam appears in the system profiler with the correct FW version). I'm running 10.4.11 and have the impression this had started since the last apple update (security update)...can't remember installing anything new except for an aftermarket battery which works 100% at the moment. Sorry for the typos and crappy writing. Best regards.

  • External isight freezing since last software update

    Hi,
Since I installed the last update, my external iSight works for a time and then freezes. The internal iSights in both computers are fine. I even tried on the iMac reinstalling everything clean, but it froze even with just the operating system and updates in place. I used the external one with my Macbook Pro just a couple of weeks ago to record a class for a student teacher I was working with, and it worked fine. The only other change I have made is to try a bluetooth mighty mouse, but that shouldn't affect both computers. I do use this from time to time in the classroom and need it back! Help!
    Any ideas or work arounds?
    Thanks

    Hi Mike,
My Answer would be a "Don't Know" on this.
I have only ever connected via Bluetooth to my son's phone to download some pics.
I would guess there is a sort of check that runs every now and then that checks what is attached. It is probably this that cause a pause or delay and upsets everything.
It seems that in the BlueTooth (System Preferences) pane that you can match or pair things which may help.

  • Isight freezing up on receiving end

I IChat with my son who has a MAC with sim OS yet His reception of me freezes after different priods of time (10-20min) We have both changed all setting in Ichat pref and quicktime yet still have problems. Any other suggestions?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, jrsbarfarm
If you think your iSight may be causing the problem, you can check it using the suggestions in How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional.
If iChat is your only problem, we will need some more info to help you:
    (1) Please tell us what Mac OS you are using.
    (2) What Mac and what Mac OS is your son using, and is he using iChat or some other app at his end to connect with your iChat?
    (3) Do you use Cable or DSL broadband?
    (4) Does your son use Cable or DSL broadband?
    (5) How are each of you connected to broadband (Cable or DSL)?
    (6) If you use wireless connection, tell us whether your wireless network is password protected. Also please tell us what make and model of Modem you use and the make and model of all other devices connected to your internet service. Include VOIP and game boxes, wireless routers or access points, other computers, etc.)
    (7) If your son uses a wireless connection, tell us whether your son's wireless network is password protected. Also please tell us what make and model of Modem he uses and the make and model of all his other connected devices. (Include VOIP and game boxes, wireless routers or access points, other computers, etc.)
    (8) List which "ichat pref" settings you include in "all", and tell us what the setting each of you is currently using for each of those settings.
    (9) Post the specific "quicktime" setting each of you is currently using?
    (10) Do either of you experience the freeze with any other chat buddy?
We will be happy to offer specific suggestions based on the details in your response.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • Consistent iSight Freezes

    Hello,
Got my two teenage daughters each an iSight camera for their iBook G4s. They share a room and a high-speed cable. I live five blocks away, and have a PBook G4. The cameras were working fine for a few tries, but then kept freezing on us.
I had one daughter turn off her computer to see if that was the problem. It wasn't. Sometimes it freezes, then comes back, other times it freezes and tells us that it signed off due to lack of activity for ten seconds.
The freezing begins from twenty seconds to two minutes after both ends seeing images and hearing voices.
    Help, please.
    Frankie G.

Hello, Frankie. This may be as simple as lack of Mac OS X maintenance or having another application(s) open when starting iChat AV and initiating video.
It might also be a temporary problem with the AIM server for your area. Before you spend a lot of effort on this, try it two or three days in a row. If the problem persists more than a day, you will need to take some action.
All parties who are using Tiger (10.4.x) should consider all suggestions from Help for iChat AV 3 Problems that are relevant to their respective systems.
All of you can Check your Broadband Speed. Especially those using cable broadband should check at a few different times of day to see whether your service is particularly slow at some time. (DSL is not so prone to speed variation.)
Those new to iSight might also consider the additional suggestions and tutorial links, etc., from Using iSight with iChat AV. If applicable, try the suggestions about unhooking wireless, VOIP, and or other connected devices while trying to trouble shoot your issues.
If you do not want to try all of these suggestions on every computer, try test connections from each Mac to several users. That will let you know if one or more of the Macs or locations is the source of the trouble. With so much available portable equipment, you can also easily Test your iSights to ensure they are functional and that it is not just one location or set of communications devices that is causing the problem.
To test outside your own small area, if you do not have several others to test with, you can find both autoresponders and links in here for some Buddy Names for iChat Tests.

  • IMac G5 w/iSight freezes up with distorted screen

I have a 20in iMac G5 with iSight and it isn't even six months old yet. At least once a night the screen turns goofy, not really pixilated but kind of crosshatched. (usually from the bottom - up) The mouse still moves but nothing is clickable and I can't get to my dock. Force quit doesn't work and I am forced to restart. I thought I had it narrowed down to two applications that caused it, but last night it froze up while re installing software and listening to iTunes.
As you can tell from my name I am a convert from a pc. I work on both a mac and pc for work and I haven’t had a problem with the Powerbook at all. I love it. I wish I could say the same about my own machine. Currently, I find the new commercials ridiculous with the pc constantly freezing up and the mac is fine. My pc didn't freeze up half this much. I am frustrated because I just lost my recent work for my final project for Grad school and I could have thrown this thing out the window last night. Can someone please help with my frustrations.

No it was an "Recognized by Apple Computer, Inc. as an Apple authorized reseller with demonstrated expertise in providing consultation and service for Apple computers." That quote was taken right from their site.
I thought the same thing as you. There was no way it was a font but I am relatively new to troubleshooting on a Mac so I didn't argue.
This is the place where I brought it and I don't ever recommend anyone else go there - http://www.macpros.biz/
Have any other ideas? I am stumped. I don't really want to take it back there when
    1. I know just as much as they do.
    2. They charged me $63 to tell me they couldnt find a problem. How much are they gonna charge me to keep looking?

  • Built in isight freezes

Lately, whenever I'm trying to take a picture with photo booth or record a movie with imovie, at some point the picture will freeze. The rest of the application works perfectly; I can look at my other pictures on photo booth or edit my clips on imovie, I just cant record anything new. It's like the webcam itself just stops working entirely, and the best part is my computer wont quit the application. It just sits in my dock, no matter how many times I hit "force quit." The only way to fix this is to restart my computer entirely.
    It's really getting annoying.

    Hello shullke
    (1) You can try the relevant suggestion for built-in iSight in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight.
It seems that you have already verified that the problem is not "application-specific." Be sure to also check whether the problem is "user-specific". Click here if you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting.
    (2) If resetting or the other suggestions do correct your problem, you can try the following:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update v1.1 (Intel).
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
    (3) A few iNtel Mac laptop users have also reported success after unplugging their Macs and leaving the battery out for half-an-hour to overnight.
    (4) If none of these suggestions help, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for a professional check.
