ISight functionality

I  have an old G4 Mac Mini (OS X 10.4) and the iSight camera that worked with it.  Can it still talk to anything?  Would it only communicate with other iSight users?  Can it be used to talk to FaceTime users?  Computer is at vacation home for occasional use.

You're welcome.
neilfrommd wrote:... wondered if iSight could expand utility of the old computer running 10.4; ...
If it still works, your old iSight should still offer every function that it every gave you without any changes whatsoever.
You can only "expand" your 10.4 Mac's utility if you upgrade the OS X system software and/or add application software that offers functions that your current configuration does not include.
neilfrommd wrote: ... From your responses I think I could use Skype...
You can if you have OS X 10.4 compatible Skype software on your old Mac.  If you do not, you can look for a Skype that is compatible with all of your system elements.
neilfrommd wrote: ... perhaps the new video chat service that Mozilla is introducing with the latest Firefox ...
No.  System Requirements for the latest Firefox show that PPC Macs are not supported.  Minimum Mac OS X is 10.6.
neilfrommd wrote: ... (assuming that translates to the Firefox alternative for G4s). Sounds like more effort than I ned to make...
As you can see from my response to your speculation about Mozilla/Firefox above, assuming is not productive.
Thanks for letting us know that determining the requirements is more effort than you want to exert.  Consider whether it might actually be faster or easier for you to determine the requirements than to write your questions here and wait for us to do the research and then write responses.
neilfrommd wrote: ... Maybe I can use the old iSight camera instead as a second camera with my newer Mac running Yosemite(?)...
You can -- IF your old iSight still works.
neilfrommd wrote: ... I don't know if FaceTime can handle two camera inputs.

  • Trouble with isight

Hi I am new to mac and own a macbook running 10.5.7 os x leopard but for the life of me cannot get the inbuilt isight camera working. I have tried everything and looked up things but havent a clue. I have done a shift control reset thing ...no luck... its not working in my ichat which is running 4.0.8 on an aim account. when I bring up photobooth there is just a line through the video camera sign. no lights seem to come onto the camera...and am a bit dumb founded as to what I can do to get it going....any help would be appreciated. thank you.

    Hello newtzy
Try all relevant suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090  If nothing else helps you resolve your issue, the reset suggested there frequently restores proper iSight function.
If your problem remains after trying after that, if your iSight does not work with any software application, and if your iSight does not show up as a USB device in your Mac's System Profiler, you have a hardware problem that will require professional repair. Contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service. (System Profiler is in your Finder > Go > Utilities folder.)
If your iSight will work with any application, (you can also test your iSight with the iMovie from iLife '08 or '09,) your problem is software. Post back particulars if you need help correcting a software problem. If so, please clarify which Mac you have. Your system info at the bottom of your post shows that you have a "mac ibook". However, your post says you are using a "macbook". Which model you have may effect our responses to your questions, so please clarify which Mac you have when you make your next posting.
    Cheers,

  • ISight & Adobe Flash Player

    Guys & Ladies,
I'm having a small problem with getting my iSight to work with Stickam's adobe flash player settings. When I click on the camera settings for Stickam's adobe flash player it shows no camera detected but a few minutes later it will work then it wont again. I repaired the disk permissions then reboot the computer still didn't work, I tried uninstalling the flash player and re installing it still didn't work. I'm running the new version of Mac OS X 10.6.5. What else can I try?

If iSight still works properly with everything else, consider these two possibilities:
    (1) If you have installed Google plugins, user OysterOyster reports that uninstalling them restores proper iSight function with Flash and Mac OS X 10.6.5.
If Google is your problem, the GoogleVoiceAndVideoUninstaller.app should be in your hard drive's Library/Application Support/Google/ folder. (not your home folder library)
At least one other user has reported that using the Google uninstaller worked for him, too.
    (2) Otherwise, user joew13 reports that installing the new Flash beta fixed Flash sites for him:
Clicking this link will download the beta --> http://tinyurl.com/2frejs4
Other users have also reported success after the beta update.

    (0) The first thing to use on any iSight problem is http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
For system wide problems, the reset suggested there often restores proper iSight functioning.
If the problem is only with the _one app_ that you are now using to record video, reinstalling that app may help.
However, if your iSight's color keeps changing in all Apple apps and in all user accounts you test, you may have a system software issue. You can test whether software will correct your problem by trying the following:
    (1) First, use Disk Utility to repair permissions.  Then download and apply the COMBO update for the Mac OS version that you use. You do not show which OS X version you use, but you can find it in the list returned by this search:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&product=&q=combo%20AND%20update
Repair permissions again IMMEDIATELY after the restart that finishes the installation.
Then test iSight again. (Repeat iSight Troubleshooting suggestions if necessary.)
    (2) If properly applying the Combo Update does not resolve your problem, you may have problems within the basic OS X software.
To test that, reinstall your OS X, update to the latest OS X version you use by using the process in (1) above, and then check again for proper iSight function.
    (3) If you need to post back for more suggestions, it will be helpful if you also post the following:
      • OS X version (you may want to add this to your Profile in "My Settings" when logged in)
      • Which app and version you originally posted about
      • Whether your problem is EXACTLY the same in every app and user account you tested
      • Which of the suggestions already offered you have used
      • Anything new you learned while trying the suggestions above.
    (4) We will watch for your status update and offer specific suggestions based on the details in your reply.

  • Built-in iSight not recognized on web browsers

    Hello,
I have recently updated plugins and my browser (Firefox AND Safari) said that an error occurred with the plugins and data had been lost. I know that a lost a few key plugins, and ever since, my iSight hasn't been recognized online anywhere. Facebook, YouTube, online schooling, and other thing you can think of. HOWEVER... it still works in the Skype application and in Photo Booth, iMovie, and other apps that are dependent on an app, not the browser. This is what makes me think it's related to the plugins. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Flip4Mac Windows Media Plugin 2.3.5

    Google Talk NPAPI Plugin
Flip4Mac Windows Media Web Plugin 2.3.5

I know some don't show up when I search for plugins on Firefox. Listed above was on Safari, which ahd more than Firefox. I don't think it's relevant because both browsers fail to recognize the iSight. If you need more details, please bring them up and I will try to find out more. Thanks again, and any help is welcome.

Several 10.6.5 users are currently finding problems with Flash based video web sites, perhaps due to timing differences in the various update cycles of the developers.
Therefore, check all third-party items like Flip4Mac, Safari "Extensions", web-based chat items, social web site "toolbars", your other third-party plugins, etc., to be sure you are using the latest versions compatible with your system's versions of OS X and browser. Uninstall any with known issues pending their next update.
If you are still having iSight problems but ONLY on Flash-based web sites, here are some things you can try. Depending on system configuration and installed third-party items, various users have reported different methods of restoring Flash video website functionality. Which might work for you seems to be a matter of what you have added to your system, so keep trying any relevant to your system until you find the one that might work for you.

Several users confirm that using the Google uninstaller works to restore Flash video functions.
Some other users, including those who do not use the Google plugins, have found other remedies.

  • Older iSight (Firewire 400) on New Mac Mini Intel (Firewire 800)?

Hi! I have an older iSight camera (circa 2003), model number A1023/EMC no. 1950, which uses the older FIrewire 400. It was purchased with one of the first gen Mac Mini's (PowerPC) which I still have.
I've upgraded and now have a new Mini with an Intel Core 2 Duo, and the newer Firewire 800 port. I have a Firewire 400->800 adapter, and when I plug the iSight in, the green light on the camera lights up, but then goes off. The system doesn't recognize the camera (System Profiler/Hardware/FIrewire). iChat doesn't see a camera.
    This is the adapter:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002HMTV1I/ref=oxya_ohproduct
Under the profiler/firewire, I see " Firewire Bus: Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec" but no entries for the camera.
Is the problem in the adapter? The computer, or the camera? Is there a way to force the Firewire 800 port speed down to 400? Don't know what to do. Thanks for any advice! --michael

    Hello michael
Connecting your iNtel min's Firewire to any Firewire 400 cable automatically sets the correct speed.
If your iSight and cable will work with other Macs and if Firewire 800 devices will work with your new mini, perhaps your new adapter is faulty.
My method for verifying external iSight function is explained here:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
You will need to add your adapter to the other connectivity devices (ports & cables) that must be tested.
If other Firewire devices can be recognized by your new mini, the next tests I would suggest is to connect your adapter, FW-800 cable, and iSight to your old mini to see whether it still works there. If not, and if you have reset your iNtel mini's Firewire ports, the cable or adapter you have may be defective.
If iSight works with the new cable and adapter on the old mini but not with the iNtel one, apply all relevant suggestions from Apple's iSight Troubleshooting article to your new mini:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
The reset suggested there sometimes restores proper iSight function.
One other possibility is that a different brand of FW800 cable might work for you. Depending on which FW800 cable you are using, this thread may be of interest:

    Welcome to Discussions, hairy scotsman
    (1) I suggest that you first disconnect your 24" LED monitor and separately test and troubleshoot the iSight built into your MBP until you are confident that your inbuilt iSight works properly and reliably.
Once your MBP's inbuilt iSight functions correctly, you can reconnect your LED display. Your LED display's iSight then should be usable again.
If you need help selecting which iSight to use with a given app, some info is available here:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11355158&#11355158
    (2) Merely restarting your Mac may correct your iSight's problem. If not, try all relevant suggestions for built-in iSight from:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
If your iSight problem occurs in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested there often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
If the problem is in only one app, resetting the preferences (deleting the .plist file) for that app may correct the problem.
    (3) If your MBP's iSight works, but your LED display's iSight does not, consider the suggestions in
      http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2400
    (4) However, if after carefully following all the above suggestions, one of your iSights works but the other neither works nor shows as a USB device in your Mac's System Profiler, you likely have a hardware problem with that iSight. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

I would like to add the following in hopes that someone will come up with a solution. The problem lies somewhere in Quicktime and the FireWire capture. I have the exact same camera and problem, and can assure you it has nothing to do with cam settings or DV LP. Once your system is stuck in this HDV mode, it would seem that regular DV can not be used again. I also have 2 other DV cams that are not HD. One is PAL, one is NTSC. I would further add that my external FireWire iSight no longer works in any application. I do not receive error messages, I simply get the spinning beach-ball of death.

I have run Cocktail, rebuilt permissions and re-installed Quicktime 7.1.3 four times as per Apples tech article 301852
I have used FCP Rescue 5 to clear preferences
I have captured footage from both regular DV cams to iMovie and then added the footage to FCP. The footage plays on the screen of both DV cams flawlessly via FCP. (I can also capture HDV in iMovie as well)
I have tried logging footage directly through the QuickTime application with both DV cams and my iSight and get the same beach-ball of death as FCP.
Why can iMovie work with these devices flawlessly yet QuickTime can not.
Why does it seem like the system is stuck in some kind of HD mode.
Just to point out the obvious:
I have no other FireWire devices other than the cameras and I only connect one at a time.
I have shut down, disconnected and re-connected before attempting to use the devices.
I have booted my G5 from a second system disk and everything (HDV cam PAL DV cam NTSC cam and iSight) function flawlessly on all the FireWire ports of my machine.
I have worked with FCP for about 6 years and Macs for 20. I understand the easy set ups etc.
Spent way too much time customizing my system to think about the clean install route, so I hope someone can shed some light on this.
    Thanks
    Lorne

  • User did not respond message...

I'm trying to set up my iSight at home, I have a wireless network, with my airport connected to a broadband router.
My colleague has the same set-up and we always get the same error message. When you try to create a video chat it freezes and says my computer did not respend (computer user name), not my iChat user name... Is this a problem with the airport & router???? all software etc is most up to date versions.
We tested the iSights at out studio on a fixed network with firewall and they were fine!!

When I am at my home office (with wireless network - airport extreme with broadband router), our iSights work fine. This is true if we use Bonjour or the Buddy list via internet. However, once I go away from this location and to another office ( (with wireless network - Linksys - broadband router), the iSight function does not work. iChat will allow us to communicate via text messages but not video. Evertime either of us tries to log in using the Buddy List, an attempt will be made (for a moment it acts like it will connect) at the other location; then returns a statement that the other person declined the offer to sign on.
When I contacted Apple, they say that it is a firewall issue and that I should read and implement the actions in: Using iChat AV with a firewall or NAT router. However, I cannot implement this procedure since I cannot get a new firewall setting to come up. It keeps telling me that another firewall is on and must be turned off. (Can’t find one to turn off)

  • Can't load flash based webcam since 10.6.5 update

since updating today, my webcam is no longer detected on any flash based webcam site (i.e. tinychat, meebo, etc). I have uninstalled and reinstalled latest version of the Adobe Flash plug-in, I have adjusted and checked all the proper settings in the Global Settings window for Flash. I've called Apple, they said call Adobe. I called Adobe, they said call Apple. You get the picture. Any ideas?

Several users are currently finding problems with Flash based video web sites, perhaps due to timing differences in the various update cycles of the developers.
Therefore, check all third-party items like Flip4Mac, Safari "Extensions", web-based chat items, social web site "toolbars", etc., to be sure you are using the latest versions compatible with your system. Uninstall any with known issues pending their next update.
If you are still having problems, here are some things you can try. Depending on system configuration and installed third-party items, various users have reported different methods of restoring Flash video website functionality. Which might work for you seems to be a matter of what you have added to your system, so keep trying any relevant to your system until you find the one that might work for you.
    (1) For those who have installed Google plugins, user OysterOyster reports that uninstalling them restores proper iSight function with Flash and Mac OS X 10.6.5.
If Google is your problem, the GoogleVoiceAndVideoUninstaller.app should be in your hard drive's Library/Application Support/Google/ folder. (not your *Home > Library* folder)
Several users confirm that using the Google uninstaller works to restore Flash video functions.
Some other users, including those who do not use the Google plugins, have found other remedies.
    (2) User joew13 reports that installing the 64-bit Flash plug-in beta for Mac OS X (DMG, 8.7 MB) fixed Flash sites for him.

or, to download the beta directly, click this link--> http://tinyurl.com/2frejs4
Several other users have confirmed success after the beta update.
    (3) User imagerle downgraded Flash to version 10,0,45,2 to restore Flash video.
If this older version is not available on a backup or an old install disk, it can be downloaded from Adobe's Archived Flash Players page:

  • USB Video Class not showing up

    Hey All,
I am trying to use some online websites that make use of the built-in iSight (Facebook, Chatroulette, etc), and my camera is not working. I know that in the flash player window that pops up you are supposed to select USB Video Class rather than built-in iSight, however the option for USB Video Class has disappeared. I have searched for USB Video Class driver but I have not been able to find one. Can anyone out there help me?
    Thank you.

  • Find Criteria is CS5 is not longer working.

    RE: CS5
    Operating System: OS X 10.9.4
I recently tried to use my Adobe Bridge 'Find Criteria' and it is not locating any files that have been tagged with keywords.  The keywords assigned to the files are still there when I click on the file.  However, when I do a FIND>Criteria>Results Match: If all criteria are met OR If any criteria are met - nothing works.  'NO ITEMS TO DISPLAY' comes up.
Note - If I go into a file folder after and open all subfolders associated with the main folder and then I do a FIND>Criteria it then locates those items that I opened each file individually.  These files will then be located in any search BUT not unless I go manually and open all files related.
Also, none of the Smart Collections worked either.  So I deleted them.  This was before I realized I had a much bigger problem.
FIND does not seem to locate anything unless, I physically go into all my files and open each one.  This would be extremely time consuming and not a solution.  Somehow something is disabling or something else? I can't seem to find any solution.
I've also gone into Cache and emptied anything related.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Finally found the problem and it's probably more simple than i previously thought. Although resetting the SMC, cold start and etc is probybly not such a bad idea any on an older machine to clean away the dust! it doesn't actually solve the problem we're discussing. You need to check which programs could be using, blocking or have changed isight priorities. After checking all programs i've installed since i can last remember using my camera I found i'd overlooked Airparrot. I'm afraid that if you install Airparrot then you'll likely lose iSight functions. Airparrot blocks video functions. Great eh.You need to completely uninstall it, drivers and all. Simply using the Airparrot uninstall tool didn't do the job for me. Airparrot's uninstall tool has a delete drivers button but it didn't work. I needed to use Terminal to delete the drivers.
If you havn't used the Terminal before then maybe you should read up first but you'll need to set a password to use the sudo actions. If you don't have one you can set a temporary one and set it back to blank again if you're not into using passwords for home use. Here are a couple of links that will explain everything:

Good luck. It worked for me!
