Isight gives black screen.

MBP 2010, bought in July. Running snow leopard 10.6.8. The built-in isight is not working with Photo booth and Skype, but is working perfectly with the FaceTime app. isight does show up in system profiler under USB high speed Bus. In Photo booth and Skype the green light does not turn on and there is only a black screen. Also in Photo booth, after the count down the picture is snapped but it is a black screen again.
plese help!
Thanks in advance.

(1) Uninstall (follow Skype's uninstall instructions) Skype.  Then restart Mac, use Disk Utility to repair permissions, and then test Photo Booth again. Follow the suggestions in Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 article.
(2) If Photo Booth still fails in your normal login account, try in another user account.  Create a new user account if you do not have one, but do NOT use the "Guest" account for this test.
(3) If Photo Booth works in the new account but not the old, you can log back into the old account and reset your Photo Booth preferences to see if that corrects the Photo Booth problem there.
If you need help resetting preferences, here is how:
• Do NOT launch Photo Booth.  Quit the app if it is already running.
• Navigate to your User Home/Library/Preferences folder.
• Delete (move to trash) the com.apple.PhotoBooth.plist file there.
• Launch Photo Booth and test its operation.
(4) Once you have Photo Booth working again, you can install the latest Skype compatible with your system.
(5) If the above does not help you get it working, post back the results you got when you tried each of the above.  We will offer specific suggestions based on the details in your reply.

  • Installing Win 7 via Bootcamp on 27' iMac 2010 gives BLACK screen, BLINKING cursor error (BSBCE)?

    Hi All,
All coments appreciated regarding thiis issue.
    I have a 2010 27' i7 2.93Ghz iMac with 8Gb ram, 2Tb Seagate, and 256 Samsung SSD.
I am running 10.6.8 with all updates on the 2Tb Seagate (has BC 3.04), and 10.7.1 on the Samsung (has BC 4.0).
I have tried over a dozen times to install Win 7 (both a 32 bit Professional edition and a 64 bit Ultimate edition) on BC partitions on both drives. These have been all on separate occasions of course.
All installs result in what appears to be a successful install, but when the machine reboots to launch Win 7 for the first time, I ALWAYS get a black screen with a blinking cursor error (BSBCE).
This is not the 2009 video card driver issue problem reported so widely and referred to in the Apple article TS3173. I had that model previously and the way around that was to connect a second monitor/LCD for the installation.
No this is a new and separate issue.
And I am no nubie. I have used IT for over 25 years and teach networking courses in the Win and Mac environments.
The problem appears to be in a corrupt boot loader install.
I have used both WIn 7 install disks to do a repair each time. The repair says it is successful but after rebooting all I get is the black screen and flashing cursor, with no keyboard response. I have used both Bluetooth keyboards and USB keyboards. Nothing seems to make a difference re getting WIn 7 to boot after the install on either drive.
I have also used the Bootrec commands in the command window. They all return a successful outcome but when rebooting I see the ever familar BSBCE.
Now,,,,,here is the real puzzle. I copied my previous Win 7 Ultimate install using Winclone before I sold my older 27' iMac.
If I restore that install to the 2010 iMac Win 7 boots fine!
So some error is happening on my current machine when the bootloader/bootmanager is being written to the BC partition.
The problem is there with the BC on both 10.6 and 10.7, and these are different versions of BC!
Now to further complicate the problem, I manage 12X 2011 21.5' iMacs in a lab at work. Win 7 Professional 32bit installed on these machines just as it should (same disks that produces the black screen flashing cursor).
I have read that some people thing it is a Boot Rom version issue, and there may be some substance to this as WIN 7 installs so easily on the 2011 iMacs in my lab.
I called Applecare about this and went through the procedures outlined above. The guy was very helpful and sympathetic but he had no answer to the problem. His suggestion was to pull the SSD out and do it again with only one drive. As the machine can ship from Apple with both of these drives I really do doubt that pulling the SSD would make a difference.
Mac OS 10.6 and 10.7 work fine, no problems on both drives, so I don't think it is a drive issue.
    OK Mac gurus...over to you.

I have a bookmark for iMac w/ SSD and hard drive.
There is also the 'req'd reading' in http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
with one article on Black screen w/ iMac 2010.

  • IPhoto gives black screen when I try to use Slideshow or Edit

    Hi:
I have a new Powerbook Pro with Snow Leopard and iLife 09. I can see all of my photos in the library, but when I try to go to full screen view, or try to edit a photo, I get a black screen. For the full screen view, the thumbnails are aligned at the top of the screen if I move the cursor there, but the screen remains black where the photo is supposed to be. I tried rebuilding the library (option + control when launching iPhoto), and deleted the iPhoto plist file in the library - preferences folder, but the problem persists.
    Thanks

Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. +*The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.+*

  • Lighting Effects Gives Black Screen

I am using Adobe Photoshop CC (2014) and when I try to use lighting effects all I get is a black screen.  The image is 8 bit, I convert it to a smart object, but when I select FILTER>RENDER>LIGHTING EFFECTS another window pops up and instead of seeing the light and circles it is just completely black.  Any help would be appreciated.

That usually means a problem with a video card driver.  Have you updated your video card driver from the GPU maker's website?

I too am having Minecraft problems.  I've managed to fix the black screen issue by launching minecraft with the script posted in this thread.
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/opt/java/jre/lib/amd64"
    java -Xmx1024M -Xms512M -cp minecraft.jar net.minecraft.LauncherFrame
Some people have reported that simply installing the updated LWJGL libraries has fixed the black screen problem but it didn't work for me.  If you're unsure how to do this, you basically drag and drop them into the proper subdirectories of ~/.minecraft

  • Windows client connecting to VDI server causes SunRay to give black screen

I login as a user to the SunRay and everything is fine. Then I test logging in via the RDP client on windows XP. I have to pre-supply the credentials but that works fine to. Then the SunRay goes to a black screen with just the mouse pointer. How do I get back to my desktop on the SunRay?
    -Jody

Hit Ctrl + A on a Sun Ray or Ctrl + Alt + (Bksp + Bksp) to reset the session and go back to login screen --> authenticate --> Logged In ?

  • Bootcamp issue, removed windows, still gives black screen on restarting

I made a mistake of trying to install windows on my mac (just because netflix does not support OS X :(). The installation of windows was not succesful (it gave up in a few seconds, probably the CD had a problem). So I used BootCamp assistant and used the remove partition and windows option.
Now everytime I restart the mac, it tries to boot up in windows and gives me that black windows screen you get when you install windows (no disk found etc). It seems everything from Windows has not been removed. THe only way to boot into OS X is now to use the option key, but I would like to get rid of this problem since I don't even have windows.
    Any hints?
    Thanks

Go into system prefs and see which disk you have selected as the start up disk.

  • Playback gives black screen after a few times

    Hi!
This is my problem. I just installed Adobe Premiere CS6. After trying it a few hours the program has allready frozen a dozen times and unexpectedly quit a few times. Is there some major bugs in the CS6? (One of the recurring problems is the playbutton in the playback window to stop responding. Nothing happens when I click it) Also, I can't find the adobe upater anywhere on my computer, but once in a while it opens atuomatically so it has to be here somwhere. Where is this program located and how can I manually check for updates?
But, the biggest problem is this: when I add a clip to the timeline it first plays back just fine. But then, after adding another clip to the timeline, or a few minutes later, it suddenly doesn't playback anymore. It plays the sound, but the window is just black. The only way I've been able to get the picture back is by restarting the entire program.
I'm very new to Premiere Pro, has up until now only worked with InDesign and Photoshop so it might just be something I'm not understanding how to do but it seems like very strange behaviour to me.
I work on an iMac with OS X 10.7.5
    Adobe Premiere (6.0.0 (319 (MC: 264587))
    Help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks!

I just tried to install Premiere on my new MacBook Pro as well but I'm still not able to playback the picture. The sound works but the playback screen is completely black.
MacBook Pro (Retina) OS X: 10.8.2.
    Adobe Premiere Pro CS6: Version 6.0.2 (072 (MC:264587))
Source Footage: Quicktime (56 gb in one file): Apple ProRes 422, Linear PCM, Timecode.
I also have some smaller clips in this Quicktime Codec: H.264, Linear PCM.
No error messages. Sometimes the program just freezes and I have to force quit it. Or it just won't playback.
It was a entirely fresh install of the software. I'm a member of adobe cloud so I downloaded it from the application manager.
I'm also running photoshop and inDesign which are working just fine. At the time i launched Premiere no other Adobe programs where running. Just programs as: textedit, mail and evernote.
    No third-party codecs installed.
Tried to update Premiere with the latest updates but that didn't do any difference.

  • MacBook's iSight yields black screen.

    • The iSight DOES show up in the System Profiler
    • The Green LED DOES turn on
    • Hooking up an external iSight works just fine except for PhotoBooth
    • The microphone seems to work just fine as well
Am I out of luck here? Sadly, my warranty ran out exactly 1 day prior to the problem occurring!!
Is there anything else I can check on?
    Thanks!

    Good news, Anthony
Happy to see that you have Photo Booth working with your external iSight.
If you are using a built-in iSight with Flash-based video websites, select the "USB Video Class Video" Camera setting. When you use your external iSight, set Flash's webcam camera setting to "IIDC Firewire Video".
Based on your pictures and your list, some of your hardware or A/V-capable software like Delicious Library might be causing conflicts with iSight or iChat.
Some users report that plug-ins installed by Delicious Library cause conflicts. However, Delicious Library is trouble-free for other users. Therefore, your Delicious Library problem might be a result of interaction with other system components not used on all OS X Mac systems. Check Delicious Library Support for help or use their "contact us" link for specific help from the people who know Delicious Library best.
If Delicious Library Support cannot help you resolve your problem with Delicious Library, the only way I know to troubleshoot that problem is to erase your disk completely and then reinstall the software that came with your Mac. After updating your OS X and the Apple Software installed when you installed OS X, install Delicious Library and test to see if it works. If it does, install one of your other applications and test to see if Delicious Library still works. If Delicious Library doesn't work now, you have found the conflict. If Delicious Library does work after adding the next app, add another and repeat the test. This will be a LOT of work, but I have no better suggestion to offer for a Delicious Library problem.
The "Yes" and "No" in your application list does not tell me which iSight (or both) do or do not work with the specified apps. Before we continue with each of your individual apps, I will offer the complete list of suggestions that have helped iNtel Mac users resolve the "no camera...", "camera in use...", and green or black image window problems for their built-in iSight.
None of the suggestions is complicated, but the only way to find which one will work for you is to try them one-by-one until you find the one that fixes your Mac. If you still have problems with your built-in iSight after considering them all, it is possible that your problem may be hardware related. However, some of the following suggestions may let you avoid a visit to your Apple Service Technician for professional help.
    (0) Disconnect any unnecessary peripherals while you do your testing to rule out possible conflicts.
    (1) Restart your Mac. Sometimes that is all that is required.
    (2) If you use VMware Fusion to run Windows on your Mac, consider disconnecting iSight from your Virtual Machine as recommended by user "The.VCI" in this post.
    (3) If you use an HP printer/scanner with your Mac, consider the "daemon" suggestions from user "parkersal" in this post.
    (4) Check for any running applications, Login Items, or widgets that can use your iSight. (It is easy to forget widgets like Mirror in your Dashboard.) As explained in Apple's iSight "Your camera is in use by another application" message, iSight can be used by one application at a time.
    (5) (This suggestion cannot apply to your Mac if ANY app works with your built-in iSight. I leave this suggestion here for possible benefit of some other reader whose built-in iSight will not work with ANY app in ANY user account.)
If someone has removed the QuickTime file shown in MacOS X Hints article to purposely disable your built-in iSight, you will need to restore the file to its correct location in order for your built-in iSight (or any other USB camera) to work.
    (6) Try every suggestion re: Built-in iSight in How to Troubleshoot iSight. Be sure to include the checks for whether the problem is "application-specific" and "user-specific".
Click here if you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting.
    (7) If resetting or the other troubleshooting suggestions do correct your problem, try the following:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update.
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
    (8) Some iNtel Mac laptop users have also reported success after unplugging their Macs and leaving the battery out for half-an-hour to overnight. You might want to try disconnecting EVERYTHING, including both power and peripherals, for a few hours to see if it help you. (For other readers: To date, no desktop iNtel Mac users have reported that disconnecting has helped them.)
    (9) If none of these suggestions work, contact your retailer, Apple, or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for professional help.
    (10) If one of the above suggestions fix part of your problems but leave some still troubling you, or if you want to continue to try fixing your problems without help from an Apple-Authorized Service Provider, please post another list showing which apps still do not work with which camera (or both.)

  • HT2090 isight camera black screen yet recognised in system profiler - snow 10.6 OS

anybody have a means to sort this out without having to go to an apple store?

    Hi,
I would try a Safe Boot first.  (This will take longer than a normal Boot and you will need to Restart afterwards).
If it were an older OS I would also suggest going to System Preferences > Displays and making sure the display is set to Millions.  (My MacBook Pro does not have this option in Snow Leopard so I did presume Snow Leopard does not have it).
With some laptops there have been some issues with the cable up the back of the screen pulling loose with regular and frequent use of the lid, but this will not apply to you based on your specs.  (it does take time to appear and is also somewhat rare). However it seems enough contact with the camera can make it appear in System Profiler and power it on but not give a pic.
If a Safe Boot does not work I would also try a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD (or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
This is actually "less" destructive in that it clears less memory items than Safe Boot but they are different enough to warrant trying.
Do you have an older version of iGlasses installed ?
The one for Leopard does not work for Snow Leopard.
Do you have  Web Browser open ?
This may point to  Google Video Chat Plug-in and Flash Conflict.  It would be rare to allow another app to access the camera even if not displayiong a Pic.
(Chrome Installs the Plug-in as does the standalone download).
Knowing  what "any application" exactly you are trying might help us pin it down.
Any additional downloaded  apps that can use the camera ?
Do you happen to have something balck in front of the camera ?

  • WMV plugin gives black screen. WMV works outside Firefox. Already uninstalled/reinstalled.

I was having trouble converting and MP4 file to WMV using WinAVIVideo Converter. I needed to download a new set of codecs which fixed the problem. I was able to convert the file and play it in Windows Media Player. However, if I load the WMV file to a website and click on it there, it will not play in Firefox. I've tried disabling all the plugins other then the Windows Media Player plugin and I tried uninstalling the plugin and reinstalling it. None of those things has worked. Is there a updated Windows Media Player dll that I could install?

My english is fine (i read well at least)  .
    At first message i said
    I have created /X11/xorg.conf & can start X server...
I =can= start x server --- its mean that startx works fine & i can see 3 windows with clock . And if you mean that i dont want use x -config, then for what all this manipulations with reinstalling was?
Besides "Xorg -configure" & "x -config /etc/xorg.conf" are different things for me, because one create the basic config, while second test this config. So i thought you mean that i have to create it from scratch without using any commands
... Damn.. i just have read english & russian beginner guides. Russian says: "after installing xorg u have to create conf file, using Xorg -configure, then test it with command X -config /root/xorg.conf.new & IF IT WORK - copy to /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I didnt find that in english version .
Well, thank you for your patient & help . I think, that problem is solved (i think - say me if i wrong)
But i still want to know, why x -config /etc/xorg.conf give me that black screen + freeze, so if anybody knows - plz, message me.

  • GS60 Ghost Pro 2PE Black screen issue

    Hi,
After almost 2 months of usage one day the laptop screen started going black after logging in but the backlight is working (system still running fine, even works with HDMI) and it kept doing so at random times after desktop loads. I am writing this on HDMI because the display is not usable. Sometimes the issue would go away for some days then it starts again.
Removing/reinstalling drivers and even reinstalling OS did not help, safe mode also has the problem and even I tried win 7 installation which gives black screen at setup stage. I almost tried anything software related but no lock, I also updated the bios.
Unfortunately MSI service is far and it is costly for me to get there. Is it a common issue among this model?
This guy has the same problem(see video), please read his first comment:
I used MSI online support and they told me to update the EC but part of the process says remove the battery! How can I remove it while this model's battery is embedded inside it and is no removable? EC update did not help too.
    Thanks

I sent it to RMA, they could not identify the issue ... now after 20 days they say their gonna send a new one. They got some money from me because they said they only had the SSD version available, while mine did not have to SSDs.  This Iranian distributor called Matrix is very disappointing.
I am really worried that it might happen again with the new GS60 too. It was my first experience with MSI and it was not a good one
