Isight In Macbook Dead???

The isight camera in my macbook all of sudden is no longer being recognized by the system. Is there anything i can do?
Thanks

i've been frustrated with this problem for months now. unfortunately my warranty expired a while back and taking my macbook to an Apple store is not an option for me due to location.
i carry my macbook with me as i use it for work and for about two months after i bought it, i was pleased to say i had no qualms with the way it worked. that changed soon after. when i went to open photobooth i received a message that said:
"...there is no camera attached or the camera is in use by another application."
diagnostics proved that my beloved macbook was no longer recognizing my built in isight as hardware on my computer. my "ichat" said that there was no camera attached. this news seemed strange as i had changed NOTHING on my computer that would have resulted in this. i began a proactive search looking for any store that could provide me with this part or any hardware fix that could prove useful in fixing my isight but i received no answer. there is no green light. there is no recognition of a connection. my isight seems to be...DEAD! recently i found a blog site that provide an answer. it said to update my EFI 1.0 and SMC 1.1 firmware. i did, but that again did nothing for my camera issue.
i can't send my computer in, i have no way of getting to an Apple store, and there doesn't seem to be a place where i can buy a replacement isight for my macbook (that's not to say it would even work if i replaced it).
my question to you all is what do i do? i am in a dark place right now, no green light, no green screen, just black...what do i do? any ideas would be well appreciated. thanks.

  • External iSight on MacBook Pro - but not in iChat!

    Hello all,
I'm considering the purchase of an iSight camera on ebay to use on my MacBook pro.
Does the Mac fully recognize the camera across all applications? For example, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, QuickTime Pro, etc., etc., etc.
Does it recognize it along with the built in one for everything? Is there a way to set it in the preferences as the default in case a given application only recognizes a default camera rather than giving me an option?
    Cheers,

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Aaron
I'm considering the purchase of an iSight camera on ebay to use on my MacBook pro.
Even if the iSight you are buying through an internet auction site is a NOS (new, old stock) iSight, it may not be covered by Apple Warranty. If the seller is not providing you service guarantees or warranty, you may be interested in considering Apple's iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions.
Moreover, if the one you buy is used, you may also want to be certain whether the connectors, cables, and mounts that meet your needs are included.
Does the Mac fully recognize the camera across all applications?
It does for Skype and the apps (caveats as listed) in this list of Some Applications You Can Use With iSight. The only way to really know whether an app will work with iSight is to check the System Requirements for each application you contemplate using with a webcam.
Does it recognize it along with the built in one for everything? Is there a way to set it in the preferences as the default in case a given application only recognizes a default camera rather than giving me an option?
Some applications allow you to switch between multiple cameras when you have more than one connected. Such apps would let you select between your built-in iSight and an external. iMovie and iChat AV are two that do this. See the documentation for other apps to determine whether they have the ability to select between multiple connected cameras.
I know of no way (or need) to set the preferences for a default camera. Applications that will not allow switching between multiple cameras will recognize only the one their software expects. Apps that do allow switching will let you choose which you want.

  • How do I transfer files from PowerBook to MacBook. (dead screen PB)

Problem is, the PowerBook 1400C has a dead screen. So I can
boot it up, but that's it. Is there a way to hook up the MacBook
to the PB so the PB is seen as an external hard drive? There
are no firewire or usb ports on the PB 1400. Just want to get
    some documents off of it.

I think you'll have to take the hard drive out and install it in an external enclosure.
Target disk mode won't work on Macs that are old enough to lack a native firewire port. And if the screen is dead, I don't see how you could connect via ethernet and enable file sharing.
Edit: From googling, I see that a video out port was optional on (some?) PB 1400's. If you have one, can you get it to boot with a monitor? Then file sharing would be an option.

  • External iSight w/MacBook Pro?

    Hi all,
I currently have an Intel mini w/external iSight camera. Can I use that camera with the MacBook Pro instead of the built-in iSight camera on the MacBook?

    Bill,
    Tried a 3-way iChat yet?<<</div>
Not yet...the L.A. connection works ~16 hrs./day in public TV now (the best post-production producer in that city, imho...and having worked for her as an audio post guy on Rescue 911 for 5 1/2 years I think I'd know <G> Oh, we were married too <GGG>).
The WA. connection raise organic veggies and sells 'em on weekends, as well as 'kettle corn'. Peak season at the moment for the veg stuff, not much time for Mac recreation. Come about Oct. they can relax, and use the MacBook Pro 17" as their portal on the world. Smart folks, but the old expression holds true...What do you get if you work your fingers to the bone? Bony fingers They really work hard.
Myself, I like the mini, but heck, I'm supposed to have the slowest Mac??? <GGG> Ordered the MacBook Pro 17" from Macconnection, gonna send the mini & iSight external to the other L.A. person. I'm hoping all goes well as regards iChat/video. Did I mention how irritating this forum is if one chooses to edit a post? Consider that done

  • Maximum FPS recording with built-in iSight on Macbook Pro

Does anyone know if the built-in iSight on the Macbook Pro has a limit on the recording frames per second? I'm trying to make record some clips using iMovie, but it only records at 15 fps. I tried Quicktime Broadcaster with settings at 29.97 fps, but only got slightly better (17 fps). Do I NEED QuickTime Pro in order to record at 30 fps (29.97) or is this a hardware limitation?
    Thanks in advance!
    J

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, itjaslee
Until you hear from some MacBook users, here are two things you can try:(0) Best video quality requires much more light that what I (and most others) consider normal room light. Try using much brighter lighting.
As explained in this Apple kBase article, iSight switches to 15 frames-per-second to improve picture quality in what it considers "low-light conditions."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93235
This Apple kBase article gives you some more particulars about best types of lighting, etc.:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93273
Both were written for the external iSight, but the same tips may help you.
    (1) Best video quality requires lots of disk space and processor power. Your MacBook Pro has a very powerful processor, but any processor can be overloaded by the user.
Almost all external drives will be slower than your Mac's internal drive. Record direct to your internal (startup) drive. If your internal drive has less than 10 GB available, free up some space. OS X slows down when your drive gets too full.
If you have more than one applications running when you notice your problem, restart you Mac, launch only the application you are using to record, and check your frame rate again. If you need to post back for other suggestions, you might confirm that:
    (a) your 15 fps is the actual recording speed versus the playback speed on your Mac.
    (b) you have set the QT Broadcaster settings to 30 fps. To change the QTB frame rate, click the "Video" tab and check the box for "Enable Video Stream." Then set the frame rate and disable the video stream to make your recording.
    (c) you have set iMovie HD's default frame rate per this help instruction:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/HD/en/im172.html

  • Built in iSight in MacBook isn't recognized by any programme

I own a MacBook with a built-in iSight, which isn't recognized neither by PhotoBooth nor by iChat nor by iMovie. PhotoBoth tells me it cannot open because no camera is attached or the camera is in use by another application, the other apps simply don't recognize it.
Well, there is no other application running, only one at a time. But the camera isn't shown at the USB:high-speed bus section in the SystemProfiler neither.
I have already tried to contact the hotline, which didn't help but rather worsened the problem - afterwards I wasn't able to even start the computer, thanks to their help. However, this got resolved later - just vanished, luckily. Well, but I will not call the hotline anymore. The problem with the camea persisted, remained the same.
As I'm living in Austria (Europe), I'm not able to visit an AppleStore. So I hope one of you will be able to help me.
    Thank you,
    Daniel T.

Well, you were right: it didn't. I had some hope for it helped others, see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=674970&tstart=0
Anyway, I will try to reset the PRAM and the PMU once more and if that won't help, I will send my MacBook to the service.
    Thank you for your help.
    Daniel T.

  • Isight on macbook (internal) not working

okay, I reinstalled (full) the macbook and once I came onto the account picture screen, the camera box displays only green with a strip of static on the top. Once that was done, I decided to test photobooth but still the camera doesn't seem to be able to get any image, just green! Is this a software problem or hardware? Before reinstall, it worked.

My macbook had the same problem. It began after I installed bootcamp, which I have since updated to 1.1. Whenever I boot into windows xp and then back into Os X, the isight stops working. In photobooth I get a blank green screen with a few scribbling lines of static at the top, but in ichat I get the "in use by other application" error.
I tried a system X reinstall, a bootcamp reinstall, zapping the PRAM, etc. etc. What really killed me was that the isight camera continued to work FINE in windows, but not at all in Os X (I could almost hear Bill Gates snickering).
The solution turned out to be resetting the power management unit by unplugging, removing the battery and holding down the power button for 5 seconds. Works without having to zap PRAM after.
The annoying thing is that I have to do this EVERY TIME after I have booted into windows if I want the camera to work in Os X.
As other users have pointed out, bootcamp now includes a package that updates the isight firmware.
Interestingly, this does NOT happen on my intel iMac, only the macbook.
I'm hoping for a more elegant fix.
    Anyone else?

  • Trouble using external iSight with MacBook Pro

So I bought a macbook pro and 23inch external display, decided to go on ebay and get an isight camera, found one brand new in the box....the problem Im having now is it will not work for audio, video works just fine but no audio, I have set up the proper resources but no dice, is this an issue or is it the isight?

    Hello Russell Wittmann
So external iSight can give both audio and video if the application you are using to operate the iSight supports both functions. Many applications have preferences or menu items that can effect iSight operation, so check your settings.
Connect your iSight directly to your Mac and use the suggestions in How to test your (external) iSight to ensure it is functional. If you continue to have problems, the suggestions on that page will help you troubleshoot to find the source of your problem and fix anything that is user-correctable.
There are no user-serviceable parts in iSight, so if everything you can do fails, your iSight will need professional service unless you can exchange it for one that works. If the external iSight you bought on eBay is not covered by warranty from either Apple or the seller, see your local Apple Service Provider for service.
If your iSight needs parts that you or your Service Technician cannot locate, http://www.synaptech.com may be able to help you obtain those that are still available.
If your iSight needs service but you do not have access to an Apple Service Provider, see Apple's iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions to request service directly from Apple.

  • Trouble using external iSight with MacBook Pro (which has built in camera)

    Hey Jim,
Have a question for you. I have a new MacBook Pro 17". I also have a 23" Cinema Display, and a left over Firewire external iSight camera (which I used to love).
Frequently I "dock" my MBP with my 23". I either use the dual-screen between the two, or I close the lid on the MBP, let it go to sleep, then wake it back up with a BT keyboard or mouse, letting it go to a single-screen mode on only the 23" Cinema Display.
So, I'm trying to use my external Firewire iSight with my MBP, and I'm getting mixed results -- the best of which is where I am getting some video with regular, occasional freezes with the picture being split (like a v-hold problem on an old TV). After a pause it goes back to smooth video.
I guess primarily, I'm wanting to know what the world of two iSights (FW and built-in) look like, and can they work together? I cannot for the life of me get this FW iSight to work consistently, but I know it works perfectly in another G5 tower (which has no built-in camera).
    Any suggestions or guidance?

    Hello Exivus
... two iSights (FW and built-in) ... can they work together?
You can have two iSights connected at one time, but, as explained in Apple's iSight "Your camera is in use by another application" message, iSight can be used by only one application at a time. (my emphasis)
Different apps select between multiple connected cameras in different ways. For instance, iChat > Preferences... > Video settings can select which camera to use with the iChat app, but iMovie 6 uses a drop-down menu as shown in this picture:
The suggestions in How to Troubleshoot iSight should help you determine whether one of your iSights is causing trouble. I suggest you test each one separately and without your external display or other peripherals to rule out possible conflicts.
After you are certain that your iSights are working individually, test them when both are connected. After your system successfully passes these tests, you can add your external devices back one-by-one to be sure one of them is not causing the problem.

  • Using External iSight with MacBook Pro / iMac.

    Posted in both forums.
Internal iSight is great, but the external iSight offers so much more flexability, and been able to position the camera where you want it is much better than tilting the screen and moving the computer.
So can you use external camera's with the MacBook Pro's and iMac's?
    *nathan

    Great! Thats awesome.
Have you tried it? If so, does the Mac automaticlly switch to the external iSight, or do you get an option to choose between internal and external.
    Thanks,

  • Using external iSight with MacBook Pro crashes iChat

I use my Macbook Pro in clamshell mode with an external display. I bought an external iSight so that I could use iChat AV. I have the appropriate adapter to convert the Firewire 400 cable to Firewire 800 which is compatible with my '09 MBP 17" (2.8GHz).
Every time I connect the iSight, iChat will launch, and then will crash (SPWoD). I can not recover unless I disconnect the iSight, at which point iChat is able to fully launch.
I tired changing both iChat and Photobooth to 32-bit mode (hint from another thread), but that did not help.
As a test, I connected the iSight to an iMac with both FW400 and FW800 and the iSight works perfectly with either connection. iChat AV then allows me to then select which camera I want to use in its preferences.
Both my Macbook Pro and the iMac are on OS X 10.6.2. iChat crashes regardless of if I am using the MacBook Pro in clamshell mode or not.
    TIA.

    Here are my answers ...
    Thanks for that info, bryanus
Between this info and your latest response to Ralph, there are so many possibilities that I cannot yet identify the source of your problem. More troubleshooting is needed to identify the cause so we know what to fix.
Your used iSight may be causing the problem. Because it is easiest to troubleshoot, I suggest you test the external iSight next. The following will either eliminate your external iSight as the cause of your problem or let you know whether it will require professional service.
If the testing I suggest below shows that the problem is related to iChat ONLY, stop the testing I suggest and follow Ralph's expert suggestions for troubleshooting and correcting iChat.
Don't worry about the "clamshell mode" issues at this time. Until you get your external iSight working reliably with your MBP, keep the external display disconnected.
Additionally, to eliminate possible network problems as a contributor to your problem, when testing (internet) connected apps like iChat, use the same ethernet connection when you test both Macs. Even use the same ethernet cable (no wireless) connection to all Macs.
Also, to test problems with launching iChat, _disconnect both Macs from the network_ to see if iChat will launch properly with a connected external iSight but no internet or network connection.
You have already done some excellent testing, but you can use the additional suggestions from the following link (including other subject links on that page) to test the remaining user-correctable possibilities:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
Pay particular attention to *possible conflicts*, testing with more than one cable and/or adapter, and testing the external iSight on more than one Mac. If possible, it would be also good to use your same cable and FW Adapter to test your MBP's function with a different and known-good external iSight. If you have no other access to a working external iSight, your local Apple-Authorized Service Provider may be have one that he can use to check your MBP connection.
If your external iSight can connect reliably to other Macs, or if a different, known-working, external iSight also gives trouble on your MBP, the problem must be either in your MBP's physical Firewire connection port or in the software on your MBP.
Unless you find a fix while trying the above, we can offer suggestions for the particular problem(s) you identify based on your troubleshooting, so give as much detail as you can about your findings when you post back.

  • ISight on MacBook Pro works intermittently

So last week I was Skyping with someone and all of a sudden my iSight stops working. I switched over to Photo Booth to see if it was working and Photo Booth told me "There is no camera connected". I grabbed a screen capture(to show the Apple technicians what I was experiencing, if I can't resolve the problem on my own). I checked the system profiler and it didn't show up in the USB hardware device section. I then restarted the programs that use the iSight camera(Skype and Photo Booth) and everything was fine. I've since experienced the problem twice and have reset the SMC(experienced before and after the reset). I still have Apple Care for a few months, but was curious if someone had another suggestion for a permanent fix. My I/O board and logic board have both been replaced in the last 6 months.
    So... What should I do?

For any iSight problems, first try restarting the Mac. If the problems persist, try all relevant suggestions from:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
If your iSight problem still occurs in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested there often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
However, if your built-in iSight still does not work after carefully following all the suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, and if iSight does not show as a USB hardware device in your Mac's System Profiler utility, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
If your problem only returns when you try Skype, consider http://tinyurl.com/2bs3tk4
If you have ever used CamCamX, check for the CamCamX5.component file and delete it if you find it.

  • Isight on macbook pro 15' was freeze

I just wonder? how come the isight built in was freeze on macbook pro 15' when we play with ichat?
We've try already to format the HD and put a new system on it but the symptom still persist. Try already upgrade it with a higher OS X upgrade but same story. reset nvram, reset pmu but still the symptom persist?
Thought this problem appear not because software issue, more to hardware issue. Is it the problem with the camera that build in display bezel/part of it.
Please sharing and advise us if you have same story or how to fix it?
    thanks for your time:)

    Hi Abdul,
When you go to the Blue Apple icon and About This Mac and then the More Info button - does the Camra show up in the USB listings ?
Also check in your Hard Drive > System/Libray/Extensions for Apple_iSight.kext. Is this file there ?
