ISight Lcd replacement question

I have a 17" G5 iMac 1.8ghz with iSight and the lcd has been cracked. I've found many replacements around the web, but does anyone know why some say will not work with iSight models? For example, if I found an lcd from a 17" G5 1.8 ghz without iSight, which is the same machine, this lcd won't work?? i know the isight won't and that's fine. just lookin to replace the lcd. If anyone knows if it will work, just without the isight or knows why it wouldn't work, could you please help ?? it would be appreciated either way !!! thanks in advance.

Hello rog (rogerdale)
(1) You are now posting in the iSight forum.
You are already getting sound advice on this problem at your other post about this topic,
  http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10661272
and you have already determined that your Mac is an iNtel Mac, NOT a G5.
(2) Your posted System Info still shows iMac G5 intel 17". To reduce confusion for those trying to help you, you should correct this (remove "the "G5) next time you are logged into  "Discussions. (If you don't know how to change your System "Info, you can do so via the "My "Settings" link in the upper "right quadrant of each "page.)
(3) Your posted System Info also shows that you are using Mac OS X (10.5.1). If that is correct, you should download and install the latest version of OS X for your system:
  http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
Once updated, use "My Settings" to correct your OS version number, too.
(4) A search for iNtel iMac user installable (do it yourself) items shows that users can upgrade memory:
  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3011
However, the search did NOT show that replacing or upgrading the display or video card, the parts of your Mac that may need service, is a recommended operation for users.
Having tried all troubleshooting methods available to you and other users in your original topic on this problem, you should now contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for service.
The Apple Technicians can use their technical information, test gear, and diagnostic software to accurately identify your problem Even if you are technically capable of replacing internal components, the AASP's diagnosis may yield an estimated cost to repair your Mac that is less than buying parts based on users' guesses.
See the iMac Service FAQs for more info on your service options:
  http://www.apple.com/support/imac/service/
(5) You ask:
... this lcd won't work?? ... If anyone knows ... why it wouldn't work, could you please help ??
If you still want to proceed with replacing your display by yourself, you are more likely to get other users' answers to your part interchangeability question by posting the question:
 • at your other, original, existing topic   - or -
 • in the iNtel iMac Forum that has already been suggested to you in your other topic:
  http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=189
For a definitive answer, contact your AASP.

  • Compatible LCD replacement?

    Hey everyone,
    I'm a little new to this as this is the first real incident I've had with my mac that I haven't been able to get assistance with directly from Apple. (If it was a PC I wouldn't waste my time but it still works perfectly) My LCD cracked when my friend's dog knocked it off of an end table. The original LCD in it is a Samsung LTN154X7. I checked some websites and have found a few videos showing how to replace it yourself because I've heard Apple charges quite a bit for an LCD replacement. If I wanted to pay that much I'd just go get a new Macbook. Local repair shops quoted it at about $600-$800 (which once again, being a college student, I don't have the cash to pay that much for something that doesn't look that difficult.) Anyway, my main question is this: a lot of sites advertise a much lower price for a "Compatible" screen but any reviews I've read state that most people do not want a compatible screen. Does anyone know if the "compatible" screens are that much different than the original Samsung? I'd like a screen that is pretty much the same quality as the one I had/have. Also, I've noticed there are a few different versions of the LTN154X7, such as the LTN154X7-L02 and L03. Does anyone know what the difference is between the original and the L02 or L03? Anything I've read says that its just differentiating between glossy and matte (my original is a matte, which I prefer to glossy screens). I just don't want to purchase the L03 because it says matte and then have it not be compatible because my terminal only says LTN154X7. These may be really silly questions, but I want to make an informed purchase so that I don't tear my Macbook apart and end up wasting my efforts to find out that the screen I purchased is of horrible quality or doesn't connect right. If anyone has any expertise on this subject, I'd greatly appreciate it. Also, If anyone knows of any trusted sites that have good deals on replacement LCD screens, suggestions are welcome!
    Thanks!
    (and yes, I know I need to update my OS, that will be my next purchase.)

    My LCD cracked when *my friend's dog* knocked it off of an end table.
    My only advice to you is to either get your friend to pay for the damages or make a claim with your homeowners carrier if the accident happened at your home. If your friends home, make a claim under your friends homeowners carrier.

  • Need instructions for 17" LCD replacement...

    Need instructions for the original (non-ALS) 17" LCD replacement...
    Ive replaced everything else, time to replace the LCD, but need the procedure to do it.
    Thanks

    Before you do surgery on your imac, go to applications, system preferences, displays, and see if you can adjust the brightness. My screen was significantly darker after I upgraded to 10.4.3 and I was able bring it back to life. For some reason the upgrade caused the brightness button to regress to 0 on a scale of one to ten- hope this works for you

    Hi Miriam,
    You clearly know what you're talking about regarding DIY jobs, so if I may, I'd appreciate your assistance.
    I need to replace the LCD screen on a friend's iMac G5 20".
    Will the instructions here suffice:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imacisight_internals/imac_g5_isightinside.html
    Or should I be looking at another page ?
    Many thanks.

    You are threadjacking, you should start another thread with your question. However, look [here|http://www.appleselfrepair.info/imac-g5-17-inch-isight-08-2006/remove-the -lcd-display.html] for instructions on how to remove the screen, and then click on the instructions at the bottom for a post on replacing the screen. The instructions are for a 17", but the principle is the same for 20". If you need more helps, look at http://www.jimwarholic.com/2008/07/how-to-repair-apple-imac-g5.php.

  • A lot of users with white screen after lcd replacement!

    Hello!
    So i have a macbook air with a broken hinge.. replaced the screen assembly as in the guide on ifixit. All ok, but after replacement the screen is white with light vertical stripes. Now i have done some research and found out there are a lot of users with the exact same problem but none with a solution.
    I think the reason why the screen turns white (most of the times) is because of the lcd modelnr en most importantly versionNr! The lcd model of the macbook air original is: B133EW03 but there are 4 versions of this screen: 0,1,2 and 3 respectively. In this link (page 3)http://www.ttsystem.ru/data/B133EW03_V1_Others_0204.pdf you see V1 is an upgrade of V0, in the way that the EDID codes have changes and so the OS has to send different codes to the lcd for it to 'understand'. I couldn't find the exact changes in V2 and V3 but i'm guessing it could be similar.
    So my question is could this be possible?? is it possible or does anyone know you need the exact same lcd screen (model en version) when you replace your lcd screen?
    Another very strange thing is that my macbook air shows some discrepancies:
    The bottom case of my macbook air says A1304 and the serialNr off course. But the motherboard shows the A1237 model..Step 14! (In this ifixit guide http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-MacBook-Air-Models-A1237-and-A1304-Displa y-Assembly/855/1
    Also OSX gives me the data:
    MacbookAir 1,1
    1,8ghz core 2 duo 64gb ssd (which isn't a a1304 model..)
    but the same SerialNr!
    When i check the specs online using the serialNr i can see it's made in week 50 of 2008.. in my opinion it's impossible it's a a1237, because apple introduced the a1304 in october 2008..

    I had the same problem with the LCD after replacing hinges and could not figure this out.
    To solve the issue, I bought another A1237 of eBay that apparently had no HD/SSD, but it arrived with a swollen battery.  I removed the bad battery and replaced and moved SSD over and "Voila"...it amazingly light up...........

  • Picked up iphone #3, (3rd replacement) question and observation

    Ok, working on iphone #3 (first one had battery issues, second one had display issues).
    Question: Under my system info (call 3001#12345#), my new phone says firware.
    I could have sworn my previous phones said firmware (with the 'm' included).
    Anyone mind checking their phone and seeing what it says ?
    So this new phone has a '7' series LCD, my first one had a 5, the second one was another '7' series.
    Ive noticed that on this new phone, the display is noticably brighter than the second phone I had that was a '7' series. The brightness level at the 1/4 make is eqaul to what the brightness was at the 1/2 mark on the previous phone.
    Pretty weird. Wish they would have gotten these inconsistencies and other things ironed out prior to launch. Two phone replacements in less than a month is ridiculous.

    Yeah i just checked mine and it says firware. and my lcd panel id is 5755136. No clue what any of that means lol

  • T400 LCD Inverter Questions

    Hello Everyone
    I'Ve got a few questions about the LCD Inverters. First of all:
    Is there a difference between 41W1479 and 41W1478? There must be, because they are different numbers, but wherein lies the difference?
    Secondly, I've built in a 41W1478 card where there was a 41W1479 before. Had lots of flickering in the first try, then re-installed the card, and after that, it stopped working completely. Any idea on what i did wrong?
    Looking forward to your answers

    The inverter that was inside before didnt work (screen was all dark), the new one was flickering. Then i turned it off, re-connected the inverter, and when i turned it on again, the screen was all dark as well...
    Are you sure its the motherboard? because replacing an expensive part isn't really the solution i was hoping to find, tbh

  • LCD Replaced under Applecare with an inferior one!

    Had some problems with an LCD so it was replaced under warranty by a large London repairer.
    This (supposedly new?) one is worse!
    The repair took 2 weeks - now I have to go through the loop again - after being on the phone repairing disk permissions? with the support guys.
    Question is - how many times do I have to go through this loop?!$£%
    And is this the sort of poor QA I can expect from Apple authorised repairers?

    When you say that it's worse, are you saying that it looks worse than the original one, or that your LCD was replaced with an inferior model LCD? Apple's warranty stipulates that Apple must use replacements that are at least functionally equivalent to your original equipment. I think this is going to be an issue in the future if people with white iMacs ever need to have their computers replaced under warranty and Apple starts replacing them with aluminum iMacs that have screens that are, specs-wise, far inferior to the screens in the white iMacs. This wouldn't have been a problem in the past because Apple's new generation iMacs have always been superior to the generation they replaced, and people who had to have their discontinued computers replaced often ended up with much better models. But now that Apple has cheapened the iMac line, especially for the 20" model that now has a 6-bit TN screen with a mere 160 degree viewing angle in contrast to the white 20" iMac that has an 8 bit ISP screen with a 170 degree viewing angle, I don't know how Apple is eventually going to be able to honor its warranty.

  • IMac G5 17" 1.9ghz isight need replacement screen info

    My kids knocked over my imac 17" desktop and the screen cracked and has a big black broken section to it now. Id like to replace it.
    I've been searching online and I am unsure what is the best method to replace it. I took the machine apart and found the model# of the screen on its label.
    screen =
    LM171W02
    I have found a few of these on ebay and other sites but they are sparse not to mention expensive.
    However on ebay there seems to be more imacs like mine on there for sale and my options are far greater if im looking for a used computer instead of just the screen by part number.
    So my question is: do i need to buy this exact screen and/or my exact imac model (intel 1.88ghz 17" isight) model no: A1173
    OR is this screen a universal screen that works in all of the 17" imac models?
    it would greatly open up my options if it were the case. Does the fact that its an isight make a difference? or the processor?
    thanks for the help.
    jeff

    Rick,
    You're posting in an Intel forum, you mentioned your machine is a G5 which would be a PPC based machine. Therefore I'd recommend posting in the correct forum.
    Best of luck.

    I run one XP drive for games (primarily Flight Simulators) and music/video (CD/DVD) conversion (Danisoft/SlyFox).  Mostly stuff that I have yet to find an equivalent that will run on Mac OS.  I run one drive with Lion: MSOffice for Mac, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, etc (main use drive).  I run one drive with Snow Leopard: still have some stuff that requires Rosetta but is little used.  (Thinking about creating a Snow Leopard partition on my Lion drive and using my current Snow Leopard drive for additional storage.)  I run one drive thatis purely storage.  Everything is backedup to a 2TB Time Capsule using Time Machine. Op systems also backed up to Hitachi 2TB G-Drive using Carbon CopyCloner as well as all important files backed up there as well.
    Video card failed.  Ifixed it using the ‘bake it in the oven’ trick. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7um_hZYom4)  However, still thinking about replacing the card.  There are three Apple part numbers foravailable/comparable video cards.
    630-9898 – This is the part number ofthe card currently installed.  Best pricefound is $586.37
    661-4642 – This card is listed as newwith no choke.  Best price found is$242.00.
    661-4854 – This card is listed as new‘with Choke’.  Best price found is$246.00.
    Then, I see where some are replacingthe NVIDIA cards with ATI’s.
    5770 – $249.00 from Apple.
    5870 – $449.00 from Apple.
    QUESTION
    Based on my current gaming on the XPdrive and the primary use of the Mac OS drives being general purpose (with moreand more getting into iPhoto and iMovie), what are the feelings of the community on which replacement vid card to purchase?  (Note: To date I have not had any issues with noise or smoothness using the 8800.  But who knows what I might want to do in the future and I want to be prepared as best Ican without spending the $1500 on that really high end card.)
    TIA

    You should look at those Apple version of the ATI Radeon 5770 and 5780 video cards.  They are the current mac pro cards but will work in 2008's.
    The 5770 requires one aux power cable and the 5870 requires two.  Both have two mini-displayports and a dual link DVI port.

  • Very simple XSLT string replacing question

    Hi,
    This is a really simple question for you guys, but it took me long, and i still couldn't solve it.
    I just want to remove all spaces from a node inside an XML file.
    XML:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <root insertedtime="2008-05-01T14:03:00.000+10:00" pkid="23421">
       <books>
          <book type='fiction'>
             <author>John Smith</author>
             <title>Book title</title>
             <year>2 0  0 8</year>
          </book>
       </books>
    </root>in the 'year' node, the value should not contain any spaces, that's the reason why i need to remove spaces using XSLT. Apart from removing space, i also need to make sure that the 'year' node has a non-empty value. Here's the XSLT:
    <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" version="1.0">
        <xsl:strip-space elements="*"/>
        <xsl:template match="@*|node()">
            <xsl:copy>
                <xsl:apply-templates select="@*|node()"/>
            </xsl:copy>
        </xsl:template>
        <xsl:template match="//books/book[@type='fiction']">
            <xsl:copy>
                <xsl:apply-templates select="@*"/>
                <xsl:attribute name="id">101</xsl:attribute>
                <xsl:call-template name="emptyCheck">
                    <xsl:with-param name="val" select="year"/>
                    <xsl:with-param name="type" select="@type"/>
                    <xsl:with-param name="copy" select="'true'"/>
                </xsl:call-template>
                <xsl:value-of select="translate(year, ' ', '')"/>
            </xsl:copy>
        </xsl:template>
        <!-- emptyCheck checks if a string is an empty string -->
        <xsl:template name="emptyCheck">
            <xsl:param name="val"/>
            <xsl:param name="type"/>
            <xsl:param name="copy"/>
            <xsl:if test="boolean($copy)">
                <xsl:apply-templates select="node()"/>
            </xsl:if>
            <xsl:if test="string-length($val) = 0 ">
                <exception description="Type {$type} value cannot be empty"/>
            </xsl:if>
        </xsl:template>
    </xsl:stylesheet>The 'emptyCheck' function works fine, but the space replacing is not working, this is the result after the transform:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <root insertedtime="2008-05-01T14:03:00.000+10:00" pkid="23421">
       <books>
          <book type="fiction" id="101">
             <author>John Smith</author>
             <title>Book title</title>
             <year>2 0 0 8</year>2008</book>
       </books>
    </root>The spaced year value is still there, the no-space year is added outside the 'year' tags'
    anyone can help me, your help is extremely appreciated!
    Thanks!

    You should add a template for 'year' :<xsl:template match="year">
    <year><xsl:value-of select="translate(.,' ','')"/></year>
    </xsl:template>and remove the translate call in the 'book' template.
    It would be better to add a 'priority' attribute at each template so it would be explicit which template to use because match="@*|node()" could be interpreted by another transform engine as the unique template to be used !
