ISight on 24" LED Freezes

I haven't been able to find a pattern, but camera freezes occur regularly during iChat (video) conferencing, and far less frequently during photo booth use (which may be because I just have it open).
I have the display connected to a 13" unibody macbook.
Opening iChat preferences, I'm able to switch to the built-in isight (on the closed macbook, which effectively turns off the camera), and then reselect the display isight and all is well... for a while.
Help?

If the suggestions on page 18 of the Apple LED Cinema Display User Guide manual don't help you,

Since FaceTime quitted a conversation on its own, the litte green status-LED of the camera is shining all the time, even in stand by and to restarts.
If I open FaceTime now, it can not find a camera.
    Does anyone know this problem?
What can I do against this?
It is really annoying. Since Mountain Lion some things really go wrong..

  • Give MacBook iSight priority over LED Cinema Display iSight?

    Hi all,
I have a new MacBook purchased in January 2010, which I hook up to a new Apple LED Cinema Display purchased a couple of weeks ago. Both the MacBook and display have iSight cameras built in.
I seem to be able to have both cameras working independently of each other within iChat and Photo Booth, but when I try and use a webcam on a website chatroom, no matter what I try, the camera in the display takes priority over the MacBook. I want the display camera to be disabled, and for the MacBook camera to work instead.
I have tried setting up the displays both as mirrored and extended, and tried moving the menu bar from display to MacBook and vice versa, but as soon as I enter a chatroom, the display camera is used.
I have tried altering the Flash settings in the chatrooms, but because both cameras are integrated and so have the same input settings, that doesn't work.
I have a feeling I am trying to achieve the impossible, but any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jonathan

    Hi,
    An Interesting one.
I am not sure there are any setting on the Mac to change this.
System Profiler is not "Dragable" to re-order the USB list.
Although it may be possible to use Terminal to re-order any list or priority that would be beyond my knowledge.
I would tend to go for the work around of using Photo Booth or iChat to make the unwanted camera Busy.

  • Display replaced...but iSight led doesn't work

I've a Macbook Pro (June '07) on which i've totally repleaced the display. They (the apple support) have mounted the new MacBook Pro display (Feb '08), that is as the old one, but with only one difference: http://nobi.com/nobilog/archives/001795.html
Now if i use my integrated iSight the green led doesn't turn on. Is this an internal cable-connection issue or does the led work just with the new MacBook Pros?

    Hello Marco
Try the suggestions in Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight.
Regardless of whether you can see a green led, if your built-in iSight does not work (meaning you can see a picture from your iSight) with any app in any user account, the repair job is not finished. Contact the people who worked on your Mac and ask them to correct the problem or credit you for what you paid for the part of the work that was not completed.
If your iSight works but you cannot see the green LED, you can decide whether a return trip to get the led working is worthwhile to you. I probably wouldn't bother, but you might want to have it made right. The most meaningful reason I can imagine to take it back ONLY for an LED fix is that a working LED might be important to someone to whom you consider selling your Mac at some future time.

  • Isight on macbook pro 15' was freeze

I just wonder? how come the isight built in was freeze on macbook pro 15' when we play with ichat?
We've try already to format the HD and put a new system on it but the symptom still persist. Try already upgrade it with a higher OS X upgrade but same story. reset nvram, reset pmu but still the symptom persist?
Thought this problem appear not because software issue, more to hardware issue. Is it the problem with the camera that build in display bezel/part of it.
Please sharing and advise us if you have same story or how to fix it?
    thanks for your time:)

    Hi Abdul,
When you go to the Blue Apple icon and About This Mac and then the More Info button - does the Camra show up in the USB listings ?
Also check in your Hard Drive > System/Libray/Extensions for Apple_iSight.kext. Is this file there ?

  • Apple  LED Cinema Display -- USB Port + iSight Camera not  working

I see an unusual problem with my brand new LED Cinema display. When i put my Macbook pro in sleep mode it deactivate all the USB ports and isight camera in LED Cinema Display. When I turn the computer back on I cannot use USB or iSight camera. I tried below solutions -
    - Restarting the Macbook pro and LED cinema
    - Completely draining the power in both LED Cinema and Mackbook pro.
    - Resetting Macbook pro.
    - Upgrading LED Cinema to latest and greatest firmware ( firmware update 1.0)
Did anyone encounter this problem ? If yes please post your thoughts or any solutions.

After numerous attempts of powering down/resetting the macbook pro and led cinema i was able to make the USB ports work. However I was able to successfully reproduce the problem once again by putting the mackbook on sleep mode.
I finally ended up shipping my led cinema back to apple for a replacement. I will try the test case with the new one when it arrives.

  • IChat AV Freezes with iSight Disconnect

Whenever I disconnect my iSight camera iChat AV freezes and I must force quit it. This never used to happen, is there a "proper" and "incorrect" way to eject the camera like there is with an iPod? I simply unplug the firewire cable, because I have never seen an eject button for the camera. I am using Tiger, and iChat Av 3.0.1 with the newest iSight firmware update. Any suggestions? Is this happening to anyone else?

    Hello Ryan.
is there a "proper" and "incorrect" way to eject the camera like there is with an iPod?
I have never tried unplugging iSight while I was in an active video session, but I do nothing else special.
Disconnecting iSight should be no different from disconnecting any other Firewire device.
    Any suggestions?
Try Ralph's suggestions. If you have them, be sure to try a different Firewire cable and a different Firewire port on your Mac to rule out connection issues.
If that does not find your problem, I suggest you try Mac OS X maintenance.
If that does not work, try the other suggestions in Help for iChat AV 3 Problems.
If you are chaining Firewire devices or using a Firewire hub or extender, please post the details.
Try Apple's procedure for resetting Firewire: See the What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire device link in the iSight Support Page.
Is this happening to anyone else?
    Not to me.

  • ISight not working in iMovie only

Today I encountered an issue with my isight camera in imovie. Yesterday I was able to record with it just fine, but now when I click on the 'capture' button in the import window and then select an event location, the capture video screen freezes (though the cursor still works and iMovie still responds otherwise). The isight still works in Photo Booth. I've searched around but haven't been able to find this problem discussed previously. I restarted my computer and closed all other apps besides imovie. Any ideas?

    F.Grimes wrote:
Uh, yeah that was my fault. I was looking in the HD folder (my 'home' folder has a different name and i overlooked it).
    (1) All is well if the reason your home folder has a different name is as explained in this link:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8767.html
    (2) If you are using FileVault, turn it off or see http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27532
    (3) If you renamed your "home" folder (not a good thing in OS X), see this link:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428
Anyway, I found the correct plist file and trashed it, but unfortunately the problem persists when I reopen iMovie. The isight import video window freezes when I click capture and I can't see what is recording even though the light is on. Is it looking like the reset is the next option?
    (4) You can try the reset(s) any time you like. Unless your problem is solved otherwise, you should try all the relevant iSight Troubleshooting suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
If your iSight does not operate correctly in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested there often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
However, if after carefully following all the suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, your built-in iSight still does not work, and if it does not show as a USB device in your Mac's System Profiler, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
    (5) Your posted System Info shows that you are still using Mac OS X (10.6.1). Unless you have already used the Mac OS X 10.6.3 Combo Update, and regardless of whether you perform the reset(s), you should consider updating your Mac OS using the folloowing method:
     • Use your Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions.
     • Download and install the 10.6.3 Combo Update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1017
     • Repair permissions again immediately after the restart that completes the update.
    Then test iMovie again.
Proper application of Combo Updates can sometimes correct a wide variety of problems, and it is so reliable that the Combo Update is now the ONLY way I update Mac OS X.

  • Disable built-in iSight or otherwise enable External Webcam

    Hi All,
I'm trying to take pics directly onto a MacBook. Don't need anything fancy, so PhotoBooth would suffice, but I need more control over where the camera is pointing than lifting and trying to aim a laptop. We have a Logitech 9000 but we can't get photobooth to use it. We tried tying up the built-in iSight with another app: this just causes photobooth to open with a blank black screen. We tried an applescript to disable the internal iSight (script "Intel Mac iSight Disabler" from [email protected]): this caused photobooth to launch with an error "No Camera" icon.
Anyone know either a way to disable the built-in isight and have an external webcam work OR an app that does basically what Photobooth does but with the ability to choose the camera?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hello Jeff.
    (1) Re-enable your built-in iSight. The script you mention disables ALL USB webcams when any are disabled.
To use a different (must be compatible with your Mac) camera, occupy your built-in iSight in another app that lets you select the camera BEFORE you launch Photo Booth. Then, when you launch Photo Booth, it will automatically connect the webcam that is not already in use. For more details, scroll down and take a look at (3) in this link:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11033260&#11033260
It deals with built-in iSight and the iSight in an LED Display, but the idea is the same.
    (2) For more info on alternative webcams, take a look at this use Tip:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2018211
Depending on the exact model of your Logitech, macam drivers apparently may allow it to work with your Mac. More info at the macam site:
      http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/cameras/index.php
Depending on how much budget you have and whether you have trouble making your Logitech work, you may find buying a new "UVC" webcam to be a simpler solution for a second webcam.

  • ISight and movement.

    I am thinking about buying iSight to use with iMovie HD. My question;
How does iSight handle movment of the subject?
Example; Sports, say I video someone doing a Judo throw.
    Thanks Ed

    Hello Edward,
iSight will be OK for short clips in good light, but if your primary use will be to make movies, I think you will be better served with your camcorder.
See msg # 1 at Recoding Roadtrip With iSight or FW Camera for more explanation.
Moreover, as explained in Apple's iSight's video "stutters" in low light when I turn it on KB article, iSight's frame rate slows down when light levels fall.
If you use iMovie to record with iSight, you may experience video freezes. This is a commonly reported, but not universal, problem for those using iMovie with iSight (iMovie 4 or later required to record iSight). It apparently occurs because iMovie demands the full 30 FPS DV stream. When iSight slows the frame rate to preserve image quality, iMovie video fails. You can read more about this by searching iSight Discussions for "iMovie Freeze" (without the quotation marks.)
If you do not already have a camcorder, you may be interested in something like Sanyo C5 Digital Media Camera, which was featured in yesterday's QuickTime News.

  • MSI 694D (MS-6321v1) freeze @ 0100

    I need some help... i have an MSI 694D Pro(MS-6321 v1.0), 2x Intel PIII 1GHz, 1Gb PC133 and a MSI GeForce2 (MS-8826 v2.0) , 550W PSU since 1year... and they had been working really good! Now, on power-on, i get a blank screen and D-LED freezes at 0100(keyboard controller??)
    Possible solution(s)?
    Thanks

Remove all your PCI cards and IDE cables.
With only the CPU+memory+VGA try to get it to post.
Next step is to clear the CMOS and try other memory and VGA, the CPU is unlikely to die so test that last.

  • PT880 POST problem

Okay, complete newbie, here. This is my first do-it-yourself PC, ever.
The problem is that I can't get the computer to finish POST. It reaches "Testing Base and Extended Memory" (LEDs 1 and 3 red, 2 and 4 green) and then hangs. The only screen display is the CoreCell splash screen.
This is a newly-built PC. All brand new components off the truck from Newegg.com and ZipZoomFly.com (mobo from ZipZoomFly, everything else from Newegg (they were sold out of the mobo)).
I've searched the forums, and the suggestion seems to be that the motherboard may be bad and need an RMA. I'm really hoping that isn't the case, but I'll live if it is.
I've seated, re-seated, and re-seated again all cards and RAM, as well as all ATX connections. I've tried clearing the CMOS (just jumper, no removal of battery), too. When trying to boot without RAM, the LEDs freeze up as expected during the Memory Detection Test.
Is there anything else I can do other than RMA the board?
    Thanks!

    2.4GHz Celeron
    Leadtek GeForce FX5700 Ultra
80GB Western Digital ATA Hard Disk
    NEC DVD-R/CD-RW

I tried removing all cards (had already removed the sound card, previously), which meant dumping the video card.
Got two audible error messages: 2 beeps, then 8 beeps.
8 beeps looks like a video failure. Duh.
But, the two beeps suggests parity error. Could the problem be that I'm using RAM (1 stick) that is too fast? I've got PC3200 RAM, and one of the pages in the user's manual seems to suggest that I need something slower: PC2100, to be exact. (The Processor is 400MHz FSB)
Perhaps I should track down some PC2100 RAM? (I was looking at future compatibility, but perhaps I shouldn't have...)

  • ISight Freezes in Photo Booth, then dead

I have a 1st generation macbook and all has been good since except my isight stopped working. At some point, it would run 2 to 5 seconds in photo booth and then freeze. Close PB and green LED stayed on. Had to do a hard shutdown (not a restart) to get it to turn off. The first time, I erased the plist for PB and it solved the issue. A few weeks later, dead again, but tryed all proposed solutions (plis, repair permissions, ...etc - EZ Jim) and nothing work...still starts a few seconds and freezes; then all apps tell me it is in use, even under another account. Funny thing is: To run a test, I installed the drivers on XP (in parallels) and the isight works 100% in parallels. Go back to OS X, and still not working. (NB: The cam appears in the system profiler with the correct FW version). I'm running 10.4.11 and have the impression this had started since the last apple update (security update)...can't remember installing anything new except for an aftermarket battery which works 100% at the moment. Sorry for the typos and crappy writing. Best regards.

  • Macbook Retina Display isight camera not working - graphics freeze

I recently bought a base MBP-RD and can say that I am overall impressed with it, though I have found a couple issues already. One of them is related to the iSight camera which for some reason doesn't work. The camera appears in system profiler, but it shows as "camera not detected" when trying to launch application like iChat, Skype, FaceTime, etc. I already tried re-installing OSX Lion, and still not working.
I have also found some weird issue with graphics where it freezes a series of frames when going to Mission Control or App Expose.
I am returning this computer as there are other things I didn't like, but overall pretty impressive (no LED battery indicator, no Lock slot, no sleep light indicator...)
Please reply if you have same issue.

i think Macbook Pro is a good computer but plenty of issues, since day one.
i received my computer with space bar cracked. i figured this out @ night when the keyboard backlight was.

    Thanks in advance -
If you follow your plan, you will learn a lot and not be nearly so "new" to Mac. Here are my responses to your latest questions/statements:
So i think i will try to make a clean Installation .
In our jargon, a "clean" install means that you will erase your disk and individually reinstall your system and applications, and then restore your data files. This method is very thorough and will give you a pristine system, but it requires considerably more of your time and effort than other methods that may correct your problems.
Easier alternatives are available for your consideration. Before you undertake a system reinstall, read the rest of this post and then study this document and the links in the document that are applicable to your problem and plans:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1388
If you decide to reinstall your system, carefully consider your installation options:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545 (also applies to OS 10.6)
As i am "new" into Mac - what will be the best way .
"Best" can mean different things to different people. For example:
    • The method explained in the User Guide (manual) that came with your Mac is the easiest way.
    • The "Erase and Install" option from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545 is quicker to reinstall, but requires more work for apps and data after the OS is installed.
    • Archive and Install with the "Preserve user and network settings" option eliminates the need for reinstalling apps and reconfiguring network and other user settings by "preserving" these things during the OS reinstall. Unfortunately, it sometimes also preserves the problem that is causing your difficulty.
    • Secure erase before installing OS assures that NOTHING unwanted remains on your disk to cause problems after the reinstall. One pass of writing Zeros is sufficient for your purpose. Note that secure erase will take hours, depending on the size of your disk. The help article below applies to your 10.5&6 as well as the 10.4 it states,:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1011.html
Perhaps easiest of all (as least for Time Machine users) is to use your Mac's Leopard Install DVD and your Time Machine backup to "Restore" your system to a configuration dated BEFORE you did the update that has caused your problems. This method will get you working quickly, but it will not help you use Snow Leopard. If you have not already figured out how to do this "Restore," see:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
The section entitled " Using Disk Utility" will help you use your Time Machine backup to take your entire system back to when Leopard was working. After it works again, either stay with Leopard, or uninstall or update whatever software is causing your Snow Leopard conflict before again updating to Snow Leopard.
My questions - with what System CD i should start to make the clean install ? 10.5 or 10.6 ?
Use Leopard Install CD if you want to backup to Leopard.
Only use Snow Leopard if you want to try a fresh install of SL to see if you can get it working.
    And How ?
Depending on your needs and whether you bought your Mac and SL update locally, and especially if your time is valuable to you, the best way may be to contact your retailer for an appointment so he can either help you or fix your problem for you. If you can use this as a training exercise, you will find it easier to do than to read and write about, and you can ask questions during the process. If you retailer does not consider proper installation of the SL software you bought from him to be part of his service, and if he offers "One to One", you may find it well worth your time and its cost:
      http://www.apple.com/retail/onetoone/
If you have plenty of time, or if you merely like doing things for yourself, follow the instructions for the Disk you are using (or the instructions in the links I cite above if you want to try one of those methods.) Remember, you can try an easy/quick way first in case it works without all the manual effort on your part. If that fails to correct your problem, you are only out your time. You can try the next easiest way, and keep trying increasingly complex methods until you find the one that works for you.
What Data will be lost - or is all backup with Time Machine like Photos ,......
This answer varies depending on which method you use to restore your system or reinstall your OS:
    • NOTHING IS LOST when you Archive & Install
(if you "preserve user and network settings" before installing)
    • EVERYTHING IS LOST when you secure erase.
    • Other methods may keep data but lose application or user configuration settings.
    (1) I use SL on two Macs and it work GREAT on both. I WANT to use SL because I like it MUCH better than Leopard.&ensp:You did not ask this, but here is how I would proceed to get SL working:
♦ Unless you already have it, I would make another, separate, backup of all important data in addition to the one you already have in Time Machine. One backup is not enough for me. In addition to your music, photos, and other data files, consider items like those listed here:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2980
♦ THEN, I would securely erase the startup disk and follow the instructions that came with the SL DVD to install SL.
♦ Immediately after the restart that completes the install, I would use Mac's Disk Utility to repair permissions.
♦ Then configure your internet connection, and download and install the Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo):
      http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959
♦ Immediately after the restart that completes the Combo Update, repair permissions again.
♦ Once you have reinstalled SL, use  > Software Update... to update any other Apple software as needed. I repair permissions before and after any installer than asks me to enter my Administrator Password.
♦ Now you can test your iMac using http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 to verify that the problem is resolved. If your problem persists at this point, see your Apple Authorized Service Provider for professional help.
♦ You can restore your data files either now or after reinstalling third-party items.
♦ Now, you can reinstall necessary third-party software. Install only one item at a time and test thoroughly before adding another so you can tell if one of them is causing a problem.
    (2) If you would rather retreat to Leopard and not bother trying to fix SL on your Mac, the easiest fix will be to restore your Leopard system from Time Machine. You can then restore any data newer than your last working Leopard system from your backups.
