ISight prevents Firewire external drive from working!

I just bought a brand new La Cie 320GB Triple Interface hard disk and have been using it through firewire on both my iMac G5 and my iBook G4.
The thing works perfectly with the iBook: fast and reliable. However, with the iMac G5, the Finder occasionally gives up transferring files saying that it had an "error -36" and that some files could not be read or written.
I noticed that the speed of the transfer usually slowed to a crawl (from 20MB/s to 2MB/s) before the error. And that I could repeat the error with the same files.
Worried for the condition of the new drive (or of the iMac's own HD) I searched in these forums for a solution. Following some written advice, I have zapped the PRAM, reset the Open Firmware and the SMU.
For a second it seemed that problem had been solved. But now it started again. Thinking that it could be a power issue I disconnected my iSight camera from the other firewire port. Lo and behold: the drive started working perfectly. All trasnfers completed without a hitch and with improved speed.
The question is: apart from what I have already done, is there anything that I could do to solve this iSight conflict? Or should I just cross my fingers and play it safe so that the whole power supply in my iMac G5 does not fail completely!?
Thanks for reading! Please help...

External hard drive spontaneously unmounted? Try these tips:
NEW FIRMWARE: Try updating your external hard drive's firmware, which is available from your drive manufacturers Web site--or just use VersionTracker's (www.versiontracker.com) search function to find it. Be sure to back up your data before applying the update, and carefully follow the manufacturers instructions.
OUT OF iSIGHT: If you're using an iSight camera while you're using a FireWire drive, the camera may be interfering with the drive's ability to stay mounted. Try temporarily disconnecting your iSight and moving it to a separate FireWire port. If you have multiple FireWire devices, try using a FireWire hub.
POWER PROBLEM: A faulty power adapter could be causing your drive to unmount. Your drive may not be getting enough juice to stay on, causing the drive to turn off and thereby unmounting it from your Mac. Alternately, the power adapter may not be providing a steady amount of power, causing your drive to turn on and off. Try replacing the adapter. If you can't get a replacement adapter from the hard drive manufacturer, try your local electronics store. Just make sure the adapter you choose has the same connector and input/output voltage. you can find the input/output voltage on the adapter itself.
Cheers!

  • How to prevent external drive from spinning up?  Or, fastest quiet drive on spin up?

My external drive insists on spinning up often without reason, often for open/save dialog boxes.  The spin up takes time and the computer is inoperable until it completes the spin up.  As a fast touch typist, who often hits command-s to save documents in Word, this is really a nuisance.  This happens with a USB and Firewire external drives.  It seems to be a feature within the OS itself--and likely some other programs in the background--that want to access drives.
Is there any way of turning this behavior off?  For example, telling the OS to spin up the external hard drive only for a specific application (Carbon Copy Cloner).  So far, the only solution I've come up with is to eject the external drives, which isn't much of a solution if one wants automatic back ups!
Now, if there is no way of turning this off, are there drives that spin up quickly?  This USB drive I have takes forever compared to the Firewire one, which also takes too long.  At the same time, though, the USB drive has the blessing of running silently whereas the various Firewire drives I've had are noisy (with high pitched hums) even when idle.  (I realize that the noise has more to do with the enclosures, fans, heat sink, etc.)
Quiet matters most, so if necessary, I'll just keep the external drives disconnected.

In the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, make sure "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is not checked. This will keep your external drives spinning, so you won't be delayed waiting for them to spin up.
"I realize that the noise has more to do with the enclosures, fans, heat sink, etc."
Yes, many if not most enclosures amplify whatever noise the drive inside makes. Your desk or table may also serve as a sounding board for your drives. Setting them on something that absorbs the vibration can help, as long as you don't obstruct any cooling air intakes or outlets.
Right now, your external drives are spinning up whenever the OS is asked to display all the possible places for things to be found or stored. I don't know of any way to limit that behavior other than unmounting the disks you don't want displayed.
Spinup time is generally shorter for 2.5" drives than for the much heavier 3.5" drives — there's just less inertia to overcome as things get moving. And 2.5" drives can also be quieter, because less mass is spinning and any tiny imbalance that might cause extra vibration is correspondingly less significant.

  • Networking a firewire hard drive from a Mac and access the drive from a PC

I'm trying to network a firewire hard drive from my Mac and access that hard drive from a Windows XP PC. I can see the main internal hard drive but I cannot see the firewire hard drive. Does anybody have a solution or work around?
    Many thanks,
    Roy

Thanks SO MUCH! Not only does it work, BUT IT IS FREE!!!!
See, I have two firewire (external) HDs, connected to a Mac, connected to a PC, connected to a USB external HD... now I can share files from the USB HD to the firewire HDs!
    Gotta love technology!

  • Can't save multiple folders to external drive. Get: "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." when dragging large folders to mac os extended journalled external drive from OS 10.6.8

    Hi
    I am feeling  VERY desperate!
After losing an external drive [dont ask....]  -   I got  another one :  2TB WD formatted properly [ OS extended journalled for mac ] ready for action to move  my thousands of files and images and ppts in hundreds of folders across from the laptop to this drive because I travel a bit with the laptop and this is too risky not to back up at home.
But this message came up after starting on moving folders across [** and not straight away, sometimes after moving  a folder  when  4 of 6 gb of files across  then the message comes up  = very frustrating]:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."
I am  dragging mixed sometimes large complex folders to this  os extended journalled external drive from my mac book pro OS 10.6.8  - it would take decades to move items one by one or even folder by folder and really confusing.
I have  dragged-copied  various small folders and files across successfully, but it is only working 50:50 and I can't leave machine with the idea of things copying eg: overnight - it just won't work....
I have been browsing google and find some people describing in CODE how they overcome this 'message'   .... but  I  [and I guess some other viewers of this in future & also in desperation]  would need  instructions for beginners....  to try this type of thing.  I don't know any code.
How can this be happening - I feel ANGRY at APPLE !!!!  for not posting easy fix instructions yet re; this, or better still  updating software so it doesn't happen [ that I can find at least  !!! ] .   There seem to be hundreds of people stuck with this stupid message and inability to back up their projects etc.
    Can anyone help ?
    Many thanks

    15 August 2011

    hi Samberl
thanks a lot for the fast reply.
I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop  onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising -  I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb  ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written  :
    " 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free  "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up  the hard drive - would this  mean all my files  [over 100 gb] that are mostly  in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon,  would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ]  ?
thanks again, hope you can clarify these things and then I will go for it.
It would be great and amazing if this 'lack of permission' message doesn't show up in the process of doing this ccc transfer - hopeful!

  • External drive not working on iMac, but works on Macbook Pro

I have read a few different threads relating to this question, with no real luck of a permanent solution.
I have an external drive that works perfectly on my Macbook Pro. My new iMac will not show the drive though (both with the current software).
The drive itself shows a power light and appears to be running/powered by the USB port.
    I have tried several ports.
It does not show in Disk Utility.
The option in settings is set to show the drive in finder and on the desktop (I have checked this).
I have tried restarting the iMac.
I have also had this problem after the iMac has been turned off overnight, and turned on in the morning (and then plugging the drive in after powering on).
I resolved this issue once by turning off the iMac, removing the power cord for a few minutes, and powering it up again.
I don't think it should be something I have to do every time I would like to use the drive though - It would be very irritating if I had to do that every time.
    Any advice or options here?
The iMac has only been used since Christmas day, 2014 - and has had this problem since that day (in which i solved it by the turn off/unplug thing).
Sorry, I am aware this question has been asked a lot. I haven't come across anything that is giving me a long-term solution to this problem.
    Happy new year!

Some USB-powered drives are just crappy. They require too much current from the USB and cause the bus to fail or the bus can't provide enough power for it to fully spin up. You can often hear or feel them clicking periodically (like once a second) as they are trying to spin up.
If this is the case, a powered Hub, external power supply, or Y-cable will be necessary to consistently use the drive.

  • Clone a Mac Partition to an External Drive from within Windows 7 Bootcamp?

Anyone know if it is possible to clone the mac os x partition to an external drive from within Windows 7 bootcamp? I (like a few others) had a problem with the latest 10.6.3 update and I cannot boot into the mac partition but I can access it via bootcamp so I was thinking about trying to clone it to an external drive and then boot from the new clone and see if that works.
    Appreciate your comments.

setup a 30GB partition on an external drive, along with a partition of 150% the size of your Mac OS X volume -- or larger.
    Install OS X to 30GB.
While booted from DVD, before you install, you'll need to go to Utility Menu => Disk Utility to do the partitoning. While there, in DU see if you can repair your system.
And where is your TimeMachine or clone backup? The "Step #1: Backup before beginning your Boot Camp project."?
No way to backup or clone from within Windows, though you may be able to write to NTFS backup volume, UNLESS you bought MacDrive8 which allows read AND write to HFS+ from within Windows.

  • How to remove an external drive from time machine backup

In time machine I also backup to an external drive. I recently bought a new external drive and thats working fine. However, it still wants to backup to my previous drive which I dont want to use. In time machine preferences I see the old and new drive listed. Both are greyed out so I cannot deselect the older drive.
    Suggestions?

If you see them both listed on the initial screen of TM prefs, they are both selected as backup drives. They are not being backed up. They are being used by Time Machine as a destination. You need to use “Select Disk…” to remove the external drives from the destination drives. Select Disk does not choose the drives you want to back up. It chooses the drives you wan to back up to.

  • Time Machine backup with firewire external drive

I am having issues with a brand new firewire external drive and I am not sure if it is a drive issue, a configuration issue or what.
I have a 6tb Firewire hooked up to my machine. This is the drive which is being used as the destination for Time Machine. I have had this drive for awhile and seem to be having no problem with it and have not had an issue with Time Machine previously. I have a new added a second firewire drive (2tb) in daisy chain to the first (the 6tb). Whenever this drive is included in my TM backup profile, TM fails. Whenever I remove it, TM seems to work. I am wondering if the issue is the sequence of the drives (the TM drive perhaps needing to be the last in the chain), an issue with TM or perhaps an indication of a hardware problem with the new drive itself. Anyone got a clue?
    Thanks.

Okay, apparantly no one else seems to be having this issue. That being the case then, how do I find a log file to get an error code so I can try to determine *why* Time Machine is failing?

  • FireWire external drives and bootable DVD's

I have 2 Mac Pro running 10.5.2 with all recent updates:
    1) Mac Pro *****UXYL model MacPro3,1 (early 2008)
    2) Mac Pro *****00PX model MacPro1,1 ROM de démarrage : MP11.005D.B00
On the second I can mount and boot with a FireWire external drive. I can also use an utility DVD or CD like DiskWarrior.
On the first one, nothing of this is possible : I cannot mount a FireWire drive only an USB drive. I cannot use CD or DVD bootables except of course Install Disks (version 1.1)
I tried to obtain an answer from Apple support without any success.
    <post edited by host>

The ROM has been reported in the past to be one element of the issue, but in general Apple has made it abundently clear that you can't install an older operating system on a Mac nor boot from an older operating system than the Mac than came with it in these two articles:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303315
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25517
And as far as I know no one has been able to downgrade the ROM to an older version than it shipped with either to force boot an older operating system.

  • Using older firewire external drive

I recently got a new 21.5 iMac and want to hook up and older external drive from om older iMac (the one that looks like the PIXAR lamp). The drive is an Apple drive. I bought a new 800/400 cable and tried to connect it. Nothing shows on the desktop of the new iMac. I had no problems at all using the USB port for my other external HD. Am I missing something?

The drive is powered up fine, it does not show up on my desktop or anywhere else on the new Mac. I am wondering if it has something to do with new Firewire connection configuration. Once I attach it to the old system it shows up at once.

  • Can I install os9 on an external drive from mavericks

Can I install OS9 on an external drive from Mavericks? I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4 on both my MBP and 27" iMac. I have my original OS9 install disc. I'd like to install OS9 on an external drive so I can use some classic apps that I'd like to use.
I tried to install directly to an external drive, but when I click on the Mac OS Install icon, I get the message "You can't open the application "%@" because it may be damaged or incomplete." The icon for Mac OS Install is the generic page with an A. Figuring that Mavericks doesn't recognize the app. Then I restarted and held down the C key - no luck.

I understand, but was hoping I boot off an external drive in 9. Thanks for your response and I apologize for my late response.

  • Sharing a Firewire external drive over Ethernet

Sorry, this should be in the "Networking" forum, BUT IT DOESN'T SEEM TO EXIST. . .
Have 500GB Firewire external drive hooked to G5 for backup. Just want to have it mount our other Mac's desktop so they can also use it over the network for backup. I CANNOT find ANY WAY to do this glaringly obvious desired feature within OSX!!!
WHY isn't there a "Share this Drive on the Network" checkbox in "Get Info"? So you could easily share any USB or Firewire storage device instantly!
    Thanks!

I have scanned a document, how do I save to a specific folder on an external drive from the Preview application?

There is no 'Save as' in Lion.  If it's a new document then select File -> Save will bring up a standard 'Save' dialog box which will allow you to specify the location.  Otherwise select File -> Duplicate and then save the duplicate.

  • Formatting an External Drive to work with Leopard AND a PC

    Hello,
I have 400 GBs of video footage on an external drive that only works with PCs.
I need to get this material onto my Mac running OSX Leopard.
I am guessing that my best option is to format a second external drive to work both with Leopord and Windows. Then transfer the footage onto the 2nd external drive via a PC.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,

What size is this HD? FYI, FAT32 has a 2TB limit on partition size & a 4GB limit on file size.
