ISight Question

My iSight, upon starting photobooth, flickers bright green for about 1 second, and then produces the normal picture. I assume that this is just the camera calibrating itself based on the light conditions in the room, but I wanted to be sure. Is it normal or is it a problem?
Thanks

No, this is not a problem.

As everyone who has posted here says, your built-in iSight will work with Parallels by using Apple's iSight driver from Boot Camp.
Here is a direct link to the Parallels instructions (FAQ) that Glorfindeal quoted:

The info you seek is currently the last FAQ on this page.
If you are still having difficulty, you can get assistance with your Parallels-specific issue directly from the Parallels developer via the following link:

  • Video capture w/ built in isight question

    hi video experts,
hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction for something I'd like to try out.. I'm an audio guy so am not up on what's out there on the video side of things....
I was wondering if there's any software that allows you to shoot high framerate video using the built-in isight on say a macbook pro, at something like DV res. I'm thinking at least 60fps but even higher would be great, like say 75fps, triple the framerate up from normal playback at 25. we're looking at shooting some video for a clip, and for the footage we have in mind, the webcam-ey look you get from the isight camera is the sort of look we want. but ideally we were hoping to be able to shoot at high speed (with music playback sped up correspondingly) so when you then play it back at the regular speed you get that realtime yet slow-mo look.
anyway, holding my newbie hat in hand and hoping my question is not too ridiculous, I hope someone can point me in the right direction of some software (shareware, a feature of final cut pro, some obscure quicktime authoring tool, whatever) that can pull off this sort of thing.
    thanks for any pointers,
    regards,
    antonio

    hi IDVD,
i think you are mistaken. the ISight didn't stop working everytime an update was done. What all of us mean was, it simply never work again after the initial update, that has causes the issue.
Mine stop working 2 months after i got my mac, it stop all by sudden, and it was only after going thru tons of threads, in this forum, that I realize the problem occur after a MAC update..
you have any solution for any one here, on how to get it back, even though it has disappeared from the system profiler? Apple have no clue and they suggest bring in down for repair.. unfortunately, not all have the luxury of parting with their desktop for even a day for repair, as work is crucial.. me for example..
Actually I have already given up on solving the problem, so if you do have a suggestion to resolve this issue, WITHOUT having to bring the comp in. I would be eternally grateful.

  • ISight questions regarding iMovie HD

I'm going to need to record some market research testing without being too intrusive with a camera or microphone. My thought was to set up my black Macbook C2D on teh table and dim the screen to the lowest setting while recording in iMovie HD. My question is, if I need to record for 4 to 5 hours, will this create a problem? When doing some tests, after recording in iSight for 15 mins, I know my computer is running very hot. Would it be ok to maintain recording for say...1 hour with short breaks in between?

  • ISight Question Please Help

Occasionaly when i turn my MacBook on i notice the green light for the iSight comes on. it logs in to osx and i go click photo booth and the photo screen is a forest green color and when i close photobooth the isight is still on, I have checked the the startup items and nothing the only way to get the light off is restart the computer. I have reinstalled OS X done all the updates cleared the P Ram does anyone have a clue on what is going on?

    Hello Greenmymac
Here are the solutions that help most users who encounter green-screen problems. None are complicated, but the only way to find which one will work for you is to try each in the list until you find the one that fixes your Mac.
    (1) Check your System Preferences as explained in this kbase article about Built-in iSight camera produces blue or green pictures.
    (2) If your System Preferences are set correctly, try every suggestion re: Built-in iSight in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article.
Be sure to include the checks for whether the problem is "application-specific" and "user-specific".
If you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting, see this Help article.
    (3) If resetting or the other suggestions do correct your problem, try the following:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update v1.1 (iNtel).
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
    (4) A few iNtel Mac laptop users have also reported success after unplugging their Macs and leaving the battery out for half-an-hour to overnight.
    (5) If none of these suggestions help, contact Apple or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for a professional check.

  • Isight problems!

    Hi!
I have a big problem with my isight.
When my someone calls me, it say`s that i dont answer, even if i do. I have tried my camera when i was in the same room as this person, but now when we are in different countries it doesnt work anymore.
I don´t know anything about computers, so i dont know what to do.
I am connected to a network in the building were live. I need a password to get in, so i guess its not wireless. Can it be that i cant use my camera on this network, or is it anything i can change on my computer?
I really hope someone can help me.
    Thanks!

Welcome, marie__.I am connected to a network in the building were live. I need a password to get in, so i guess its not wireless.A password is NOT an indication of whether internet service is wireless. You are "wireless" if you do not need to connect some kind of wire, usually ethernet cable, to your computer to use the internet.
Your first stop for help should be with the people who manage your building's internet network. Once they help you get your internet connection working for things like email and web browsing, they may be able to help you configure your connection for whatever software you are using when someone "calls" you.
Now on to your "iSight" questions.
You can Test your iSight to ensure it is functional using these tips. If iSight works, your problem is with some software you are using with your iSight. Perhaps you are using iChat AV? If you are using another video chat or instant messenger application, disregard the following suggestions about iChat AV.
Whatever software you use, try testing with several other users to see whether your problem is with everyone or only with the one person.
If you are using iChat AV, start with the suggestions and links in Using iSight.
If you cannot connect using iChat AV with anyone, try the troubleshooting and problem resolution suggestions in Help for iChat AV 3 Problems.
If you previously had iChat AV video chats working, try the suggestions in How to get iChat AV working again that are relevant to your system.
Once you can ask a more specific and let us know what software you are using when you have your problem, we may be able to offer more specific suggestions.

  • Old External iSight Camera

Hi I just got an iMac G4 1Ghz & and external iSight
(These are my first Apple bits of kit apart from the iPod Classic so I am a bit new to Apples and hhow they work)

    Can/How can I do this?
    Do I need more software?

    (1) iMovie (it may have come with your Mac) and several other apps can record video with iSight.  Some others are listed here:
    http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage7.html
    (2) You can add any software you need that did not come with your Mac.  Be certain it is compatible with your PPC (G4) Mac.  Software for iNtel Macs will NOT run on your PPC Mac.
    (3) Your iSight is old.  You can test its functionality using the suggestions here:

    Hello nagendramishr
I am uncertain whether this is merely an information post or whether you are asking for iSight help.
If you think you have an iSight problem, use the suggestions in How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional to determine whether the problem is related to your external iSight and to fix common user-correctable problems.
Whether you are using external or built-in iSight, be sure to consider all relevant suggestions from Apple's iSight troubleshooting page.
If your iSight works correctly with any app or in any user account, iSight is NOT your problem. In that case you will need to determine whether the problem is with your applications software or your OS.
Unless the problem you post about here is the same one that you are already working with Ralph in your iChat AV 3 post at
      http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6232695#6232695 ,
if your only problem is another issue with iChat AV, I suggest you search or post in iChat AV 3 Discussions.
If using the above links does not give you the answers you need to your iSight question, when you post your specific question(s), please also include specifics on the following:
    (a) which iSight you are using,
    (b) what you found by your iSight troubleshooting,
    (c) which software works with your iSight and
    (d) which does not,
    (e) are ALL the problems EXACTLY the same in every user account you try,
    (f) how the problem differs on your different Macs, and
    (g) how the problem your post about here differs from the issue you are posting about in iChat AV 3 Discussions.
We will try to provide more focused suggestions based on the details in your response.

  • (newbie and technophobe here) Help with speakers and web camera ...

    Hello, everyone!
I've had my G-5 since I ordered new in November of 2005, and only now am I geting around to purchasing speakers and musing about a web camera.
On speakers, the kid at Best Buy yesterday told me that speakers aren't really operating system specific. That is, that they plug and play into any computer and don't require any software; like speakers do to a stereo. However, I just noticed the speakers I bought (Logitech Z-10) for $120.00 do not have "Macintosh" listed on the box as it does for a PC on the Requirements listing. Before I open this box and find out they don't work properly, do I really need Mac specific speakers?
I also went to the Mac store here in Fashion Valley and they no longer carried any web cameras. After visiting three other computer retailers such as Best Buy, and Frys, I came up dry on cameras for a Mac. I do however have an Ebay merchant selling a MacAlly iceCam Web Camera Mac right here in town who I can drive over and purchase one if I want to. However, after going on Ebay, I noticed that the $300.00 Mac iSight camera is there for sale, so I was wondering what the difference was. The MacAlly one is around $27.00, whereas the iSight is close to $300.00. Is the iSight worth the price in other words? What can it do that the MacAlly can't? Would the MacAlly suffice just to talk to another across the country?
    Thank you.
    G-5 Imac Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Martin, Rod:
Thank you for your responses. I think I have Panther(10.3.9), so will iChatAV be in that system, or will I have to upgrade to Tiger in order to make full use of an iSight camera ? Can I web camera with AOL subscribers, or am I pretty much limited as to who I can conference with?
Thank you for clearing up the speaker thing. It looks like I'll be returning them to Best Buy tomorrow, and then start a search for Apple specific speakers. Thanks again.
iSight question: It looks like I'm going to have to purchase an iSight web camera at an overinflated price at a site such as Ebay since Apple no longer produces them, so my question is, Does anyone know whether the camera came with software or manuals (In case the seller doesn't have any) ... or does one actually need any?
Keychain Question: What's this annoying keychain box that pops up everytime I use Safari? How do I get rid of it? What's it for? What am I supposedly unlocking? I don't think I have a keychain password.
Thank you all for your assistance,
    Frank

  • ISight System Requirements (dumb question, but I'm confused)

Sorry to ask such a purchase-related question, but I'm entirely confused as to whether I can use iSight with my G4 Cube.
I'm running OS 10.4.3 and have iChat AV installed, but my processor speed is only 500 MHz.
The information on the actual iSight package is unclear. So, after I was disuaded from buying one at a retail store, I checked the site store. There, the system requirements read:
"Macintosh computer with a 600MHz or faster PowerPC G3 or any PowerPC G4 or G5 processor."
I understand this to mean that, for people with G3 PowerPCs, their processor speed must be at least 600 MHz. But any G4 or G5 processor should be adequate.
However, when I called Apple Customer Service, the representative insisted that this means, no matter what processor you have, its speed must be at least 600 MHz.
    Can someone enlighten me?
    G4 Cube   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   500 MHz processor
    G4 Cube   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   500 MHz processor

Hello Jason. Different software applications that drive iSight can have different System Requirements.
There are a lot of choices of Applications You Can Use With iSight. Select the app that performs the function you want and then check its system requirements. Different applications have their own (and possibly different) requirements, so check carefully when considering other software.
The 600 MHZ requirement is the G3 processor speed minimum System Requirements for iChat AV 2.1. This particular 600 MHz speed requirement applies only to G3 Macs using iChat AV 2.1. ANY G4, including your Cube, can use iSight with iChat AV 2.1.
However, you are using iChat AV 3. Some of the System Requirements for iChat AV 3 are significantly higher than for version 2.1, but your G4 can still use iSight for one-to one iChat AV 3 video without PowerBoost.

  • SIMPLE QUESTION - EXTERNAL iSIGHT CAMERA

I just have a simple question...
I was using an older iMac G5 with an external iSight camera and just upgraded to a new 24" iMac. Can the external iSight camera still be used on an iMac with a built-in camera?
The cable with the external camera allows for more flexible viewing capability.

    Hello rgarros50
The second part of your question is not quite so simple.
Plug your external iSight in and turn it on. If you like, you can use the suggestions from How to test your (external) iSight to ensure it is functional to be sure it is working with your new iMac.
The answer to your question about the "default camera" depends on which application you are using to operate your iSight. Here is how camera selection works in a few example:
    (1) For iChat, you can choose which iSight you use in the "Camera:" choices bar in iChat > Preferences... > Audio/Video that appears when more than one compatible camera is connected. Although your camera choices will be different, the choices bar will look something similar to the Preferences settings shown here:
Most other applications also have settings that allow you to choose which camera to use. However, they do not all work the same way.
    (2) For instance, iMovie's camera choice is NOT set via Preferences. When you have more than one compatible camera connected, iMovie uses a drop-down menu choice something like this (depending on which version of iMovie you use):
Note: Because I have no built-in iSight, when my external iSight is disconnected, the drop-down menu shows only "Time Lapse." Because your iMac has a built-in iSight, your built-in iSight will show in the drop-down menu even when no other camera is connected. Connecting your external iSight should allow you to choose either camera.
    (3) Photo Booth is such a simple, basic app that it offers no menu selectable choice. Unless you make your built-in iSight the camera being used by some open application before you launch Photo Booth, Photo Booth will use ONLY your built-in iSight.
However, you can use the trick from ¶ 4 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302781 to let Photo Booth use your Firewire external  iSight:
    • Connect your external iSight and turn it on.
    • Quit Photo Booth (PB) if it is running.
    • Launch any app with a user-selectable camera "Preferences..." menu command.
(The "tip" suggests that you use iChat, but others should work as well.)
    • Open "Preferences..." and set the camera "Preference" to use your built-in iSight.
    • Now launch PB. PB should now use the external iSight
because your built-in camera is in use by the other application.
    (4) For apps other than those above, see their Help or other documentation.

  • Imovie 11 using with isight, frame rate question

I am working in iMovie 11 and just tried the isight camera to record voice over. My project is 24 fps, but the isight camera seems to have recorded the clip at 30fps. Is there a way to retain 24fps project setting for isight camera use? In other words, can I set the camera for 24 fps, the way I do my cam corder?

Were you shooting on the Panasonic HVX-200 onto P2 cards in 720pn mode?
    Yes, that's correct.
you should still make a DVD and watch the movie on a TV
I will do that; thanks for the advice.
if you are having these problems on your computer, there's always a chance that your client will have problems showing the file on the unknown computers
That has been a big part of my cause for concern. My friend (the one I'm working with on this project, who owns the equipment we're using) would prefer to burn it to a Blu-ray disc, but unfortunately we don't have access to a Blu-ray burner. So I'm thinking we should provide it as both a DVD and as a QuickTime file, to cover as many bases as possible.
Thanks again for your patience with novice questions. I've looked for books on these kinds of things, but everything I've found seems to either be written at the extreme beginner level ("this is how you upload video onto your computer"), or the extreme advanced level. Perhaps I haven't been looking in the right places; if you can suggest some good reading materials on this kind of thing, that would be great.

  • ISight/streaming noob question

I recently downloaded Iris Beta (http://www.mildmanneredindustries.com/iris/) and have a question. This could be Iris-specific, but I'm guessing it's just my basic ignorance.
I set up the built-in iSight on my MacBook Pro to stream with built-in iChat http streaming over my home network, using server push. The address is my IP and a listen port that I indicated (xxx.xxx.x.xxx:xxxx). It worked fine on a Windows box in Firefox but nothing is coming up at work. Can I only view the stream on my home network? I've set my MacBook Pro to only sleep the display. I've tried other browsers, QuickTime, and VLC, but I'm only getting timeouts. I don't know if this means anything, but I pinged the address and it came back fine.
    Thanks in advance.

    You're welcome, Paul
In case your problem is really a networking issue, I checked PortForward.com (my usual source of info on the topic of port configuration.) However, with the Iris software you have selected being so new and in beta, I was not surprised that I could not find it there.
As a test, you might want to try unplugging Airport Express and connecting your Mac to your Linksys router via ethernet cable. WDS range extension can sometime slow data-streams enough that the software, particularly software requiring as much bandwidth as many video apps, will not work because its minimum bandwidth requirement is no longer met. If your system works when you are bypassing the AE, this might the case with Iris and your system.
I hope you get timely answers from Iris. At this state of development, I really think your help about Iris will need to come from the developer unless another beta tester has cracked the problem. I think you will have a much better chance of finding such a tester at the Iris Support Forum than in Apple Discussions.
From my quick look, most of the functions other than motion detection and webcam offered by Iris duplicate those of reliable and well-documented Apple software that came with your MacBook Pro.
I do not know how committed you are to working with the Iris software. If you cannot get Iris working in a reasonable time, and if the functions you need that are not bundled with your Mac are motion detection or webcam, you might want to consider some of the applications that offer webcam, motion detection, or Nanny cam capability from the list at Some Applications You Can Use With iSight as alternatives to Iris, at least until Iris is better developed and supported.
Perhaps you are enjoying the challenge of beta testing Iris. In that case, kudos to you. The Iris development team will be pleased that you have reported your problem, whether the issue is a real functional problem or merely one of a need for improved documentation.
Please let us know if you need more info before you can mark this topic "Answered."

    Hello rog (rogerdale)
    (1) You are now posting in the iSight forum.
You are already getting sound advice on this problem at your other post about this topic,
      http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10661272
and you have already determined that your Mac is an iNtel Mac, NOT a G5.
    (2) Your posted System Info still shows iMac G5 intel 17". To reduce confusion for those trying to help you, you should correct this (remove "the "G5) next time you are logged into  "Discussions. (If you don't know how to change your System "Info, you can do so via the "My "Settings" link in the upper "right quadrant of each "page.)
    (3) Your posted System Info also shows that you are using Mac OS X (10.5.1). If that is correct, you should download and install the latest version of OS X for your system:

    (4) A search for iNtel iMac user installable (do it yourself) items shows that users can upgrade memory:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3011
However, the search did NOT show that replacing or upgrading the display or video card, the parts of your Mac that may need service, is a recommended operation for users.
Having tried all troubleshooting methods available to you and other users in your original topic on this problem, you should now contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for service.
The Apple Technicians can use their technical information, test gear, and diagnostic software to accurately identify your problem Even if you are technically capable of replacing internal components, the AASP's diagnosis may yield an estimated cost to repair your Mac that is less than buying parts based on users' guesses.
See the iMac Service FAQs for more info on your service options:

    (5) You ask:
... this lcd won't work?? ... If anyone knows ... why it wouldn't work, could you please help ??
If you still want to proceed with replacing your display by yourself, you are more likely to get other users' answers to your part interchangeability question by posting the question:
     • at your other, original, existing topic   - or -
     • in the iNtel iMac Forum that has already been suggested to you in your other topic:

For a definitive answer, contact your AASP.

  • Isight megapixels and some questions

first off, i want to know how many megapixels are in the isight camera in the Macbook 2.4 ghz version (i think they are all the same but wanted to be specific) i might have missed this while reading up on it but answers would be appreciated. also
-do you consider the camera good?
-(kinda silly and dumb question but i like to be sure) can AIM user see me using it in ichat?

    Hello optar
    (1) I believe that new MacBook (other than the MacBook Air) have 1.3MP. To be CERTAIN, or to test whether a pre-owned MacBook has the 1.3MP camera or the older 0.3MP version, use the test explained in this page.
    (2) I consider either version of iSight a fine webcam. Either works well for video chat, snapshots for your system ID use, and even small, email-sized pictures. When you want prints or large, high-quality snapshots or movie clips, you will see much better images from your digital still camera or camcorder.
    (3) When you get your Mac, searching its iChat > Help for "Chatting with AIM buddies" (without the quotation marks) will assure you that iChat can connect with AIM. However, this search of the Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard > iChat and iChat Sharing Forum included the following post that tells of significant audio problems with AIM at present time:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6393396&#6393396
The "Help" built into Macs really is helpful. It should be your first stop for most questions. Using your iChat > Help rather than only using the web help pages has the advantage of showing many related topics such as "About video chatting with AIM buddies. Don't be confused by the statement in this subject that says: "AIM does not support audio chatting..." That phrase means that a Windows PC using the AIM messenger software for Windows cannot do an audio only chat like iChat users can when using iChat between Macs. However, AIM does offer audio as part of its video connection, so, barring the problems noted above, you can both see and hear each other when you use iChat to video chat with a Windows PC user.
If you want to learn more about iChat, see iChat Support. Start with the "Mac 101: iChat" link. Other Mac 101 topics may also be of interest.
Note that the "Discussions forums" link in iChat Support is for the older versions of iChat. Unless you are considering a Mac that uses Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier, you will want the iChat and iChat Sharing Forum. This forum covers the new iChat version that works with Leopard (Mac OS X v10.5).
