ISight standalone picture freezes, choppy

On a G5, standalone iSight (firewire) using Skype or iChat, testing in Skype Preferences Video mode, image appears then freezes, then, 20-30 seconds later, maybe, the image moves again, and freezes. Once in a while the image is duplicated into a grid of four small images.
Regardless, haven't had smooth video for 6 months in Skype Preferences or an actual call. I think the bad image started after an Apple software update.
Isight had been working perfectly. Then, suddenly, everything went bad.
If Skype does not recognize the iSight, and there is a black screen in Skype Video Preferences mode, unplugging the iSight from it's base and re-plugging it in makes Skype recognize the camera.
Same bad visuals in Skype and iChat, so I guess the issue is with iSight.
Repaired permissions, latest updates for 10x installed. Latest version of Skype. Everything is up-to-date. Deleted Perian and tested iSight - still the choppy images. Re-installed Perian.
Seems to also be trouble in a Skype call- the person on the receiving end does not see video of me, although I see video of the other person (from their PC!) If they do see my video, it is also choppy and freezes.
Isight is connected via a firewire hub. There is only one other firewire device connected to the hub.
I've disconnected and reconnected the iSight camera from it's FW connection on the base. (I haven't done anything in the back of the computer - it's a real chore to access there!)
So, any thoughts?

Skype, Preferences >Video, takes more than a minute, if at all, to change from black screen and recognize the camera. In most attempts, Skype doesn't recognize the camera, and I need to quit Skype, relaunch, then disconnect and reconnect the camera in order to make Skype recognize it. And then it still takes :30 seconds for Skype to change from a black screen to the camera image.
All the other apps I used for testing recognize the camera fairly quickly.
Are you using Apple Remote Desktop as in Tiger this caused a 1 frame per sec issue if active.
No.
other apps like iMovie that can use your iSight, too?
IChat 4.0.7 Audio/Video Preference panel- choppy image, freezes, scrolls vertical, freezes.
iMovie HD - image, becomes choppy, freezes, scrolls vertical once or twice, freezes.
Quicktime7 .6 (472) - image, becomes choppy, freezes.
BTVPro - this is probably the smoothest, for about 3 seconds, then gets choppy and freezes.
Do you use any Add-ons for iChat ?
No. But anyway, I'm using iChat as one of the apps to test the video only. I otherwise don't use iChat.
Did you have them before you upgraded to Leopard ?
I only have been using the iSight with Leopard.
iSight and Skype had been good for 10 months, then suddenly, in around September or October 2008 the trouble began. It may have followed a Leopard update. I checked the Apple updates, and 10.5.5 was released Sept. 15, 2008.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1055update.html
I connected a Chumby around that time also. Chumby, and an iBook (Tiger) are wireless via Airport. The iSight is on a desktop, which is wired to a cable modem/Airport.
Today, I disconnected Chumby from its power source, but it had no effect on the iSight video quality, which continues to break up and freeze.
Also, there is usually about 2-4 seconds of spinning beach ball after every adjustment in Skype, iChat, Quicktime, BTVPro, and iMovie HD. It takes that long to highlight a function, then after selecting the function for it to take effect.
This is a application that uses spare processor time to help find protein chains for a University.

I see about 15 files (no applications) with "PostgreS" in the title. Can they be deleted?
If you are still having problems I would do Routine Maintenance Tasks as laid out here
Permissions repair done via Disk Utility.
The choppy/freezing image continues.
Next, I will play with the cables.

  • When viewing full screen video in netflix watch instantly, the picture freezes while the audio continues streaming

When watching full screen video in firefox the picture freezes and the audio continues streaming. I had at first thought this was limited to netflix but now see the same problem when viewing flash video sites. Once the picture freezes the computer has to be rebooted. This only happens in firefox. Explorer streams perfectly in fullscreen. The problem began after updating to firefox 3.6 as I had no problems prior to that.

  • IPhoto 8 as a standalone picture editor

Is there an easy way to use iPhoto 8 as a standalone picture editor without having to import and export photos? Just open a picture, make changes and save it. Forget the iPhoto library. Just do a quick edit on one file.

This forum is like the emergency room at your local hospital. Only people with problems and in there and only represent a very small fraction of the population. If you base your confidence in iPhoto or other Apple apps on these forums you might as well get a PC.
People do have problems with iPhoto. Most are user specific and often due to 3rd party enhancements to the system or application. iPhoto is a very good DAM (digital asset management) application with good editing features (as you've found out). As far as trusting your photos to a proprietarily application, your photos are kept in a folder title Originals which is located in the library package. If the library is damaged it's usually the database file, Library6.iPhoto, and you're files will remain safe and sound.
With a little user forethought, i.e. backups, there's little change of losing the photos. See the tip at the end of my signature for an easy way to protect against the database file damage.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Premiere 2014 MXF Footage Still Crashing, Glitching, Picture Freezes but Audio Plays Fine, Footage Duplicating Itself in Media Bin & Timeline - HitFilm3 pro plays fine!

WTH is going with Premiere?  These continuing problems are just getting worse and worse. I just imported 12 hours of MXF footage at 720p and almost all the footage has duplicated itself in my media bin when I import. rather the files are there ie: AA009906.MXF, and so on numerically, but the lengths are all the same, and the picons play the exact same footage within the media bin. So I drag all the footage to the timeline where the footage is all duplicated the same amount of files there are. But not always. Also if I just drag the first file down to timeline, almost the whole disk shows up on the timeline. Finally when playing, after about a couple of minutes, the pictures freezes on some non descript frame for the rest of about 2 hours worth.  Then everything all picks up fine. Next chip of files same thing but at different places.
What's really a hoot, is that I just downloaded a trial version of HITFILM3PRO editing software and all my footage plays just fine without any of ADOBE's glitches.  Also downloaded AVL Player for MXF files, to which everything plays just fine too.
This is oh so ridiculous that If I weren't laughing so much right now, i'd be on the verge of a heart attack with all this Adobe Crap!
I can't fathom why Adobe isn't paying me to be a Beta Tester, instead of me having to call my new client, Once Again, and tell them that their project is on Hold, Once again, just the same for every project ever since adobe introduced "CREATIVE CLOUD".

That's strange. Can you upload a test file so I can try and replicate the behavior?
You did ingest via the Media Browser after copying the camera's HD cards to your media HD right?
What kind of camera is this?

  • Recordings picture freezing on playback

My Freeview reception is very good and I do not suffer from pixilation or picture freezing while watching live TV.
However on several recordings I have made I get picture freezing (not pixilation) that takes quite a few seconds (20 ish) to clear.  Rewinding and replaying gives the same issue.
As I am deleting recordings after watching I have started to wonder whether there could be an issue with the Youview box's hard drive (i.e. I am recording programmes over the same bad sectors of the disc).
    Is this possible?
Are there any hidden disc utilities to check the hard drive?

    PJ_Maybe,
Did you manage to get to the bottom of this or are you still having trouble?

  • Qosmio F20: MCE picture freezes for a few seconds

my f20 my media centre tv picture freezes for a few seconds then the processors fan kicks in and the picture comes back. is this connected I have checked the ariel on other devices and the signal is ok

    Hello
In my opinion the picture freezes for a few seconds because the CPU starts a new background process. As far as I know similar issues occur if the CPU performance usage goes to 100%.

  • Picture Freezes, Goes Black

I'm watching a movie ((931 Outmax HD) and at exactly 1:00 AM the picture freezes. I tried to change to another channel and nothing - screen went black. I could press Play/Pause and it would show the info line at the bottom of the screen, but still no picture. After about 15 minutes, the picture was back.
I've only had FIOS TV for a few weeks and have been pretty disappointed in the number of times the picture just freezes. Is this normal?

To the OP, it is likely a signal issue (as mentioned) caused by a loose or corroded coax connector somewhere on the path between the ONT and the STB.  Problems on one or more channels is a common symptom of this phenomena due the the wavelengths of the QAM channels involved.  Reseat and tighten all coax connectors and it may solve the problem.  It did for me when I had a similar issue.

  • VOD Picture Audio Choppy

We've had FIOS for years, and suddenly this week the VOD is having a problem.  The shows play, but the picture is choppy (almost pixellated), and sound goes in and out.
I called FIOS and did a hard reset of the router, problem still exists.

you should be rebooting the router (hard reset is ok) and rebooting the box itself.  If it continues past that,  you should go to the router, and unhook the coax, and put it back with hand tightness,  do the same at the wall or splitter.   and the same goes for the box itself.  if that all doesn't make a difference then i'd probably reach out to them again and tell them what you've done already and that you had no luck.  it may be a faulty router, or bad connections at the house -  they most likely will send you a new router to begin a process of elimination, and they may end up sending someone over.
try the first things yourself though, it will save you a lot of time with support and the whole process.

  • Import for about 10-15 min okay then import picture freezes beach ball

I was importing my latest video from the camera Sony DCR-TRV8 (standard def mini DV camcorder) and it would import properly for variable amount of minutes, sometimes 10, sometimes 15 sometimes 2 or anything in between, before the picture freezes on the iMovie 08 import window and iMovie has basically crashed (beach ball, no interaction and no recovery). The camcorder is continuing to run playing its video and sound successfully on its little display, however none of it gets recorded after iMovie freezes.
I eventually have to kill iMovie and restart it (makes me feel like I'm on pre XP Windows again). I'm working on a Mac Pro (2.5GB RAM and plenty of room on the HD).
Has anyone else run into this? And know how to get around it?
Now this didn't happen on the previous 3 tapes (done in previous months), where it ran the length of the tape without attention from me and imported everything onto the system's hard drive and iMovie 08's library. I thought it might be that the system was going to sleep or something, but I made sure I was fidgeting with the window (moving it) occasionally this time and it did it anyways.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Found [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6387869] ("iMovie freezes") that suggested one of the iMovie updates (likely 7.1.1) is the source of these import freezes. People have trashed their iMovie app and prefs, then did a re-install from the DVD and that fixed it for them. One guys claims he also updated to 7.1 and is still OK.
I downgraded to 7.0 and am currently importing a tape and it's gotten further than it has in the past. I'll let you know after I import a few whether it fixed it permanently for me.

  • 40S51U Picture Freezes and TV Restarts

When I am watching TV, sometimes the picture freezes and the audio will continue for about 5 seconds. The TV will then shut itself off and try to restart. The LED flickers a faint red, then blinks green 3 times. The TV turns itself back on and is normal again. This happens when I watch Netflix. I only use Netfllix and the HDMI but it only seems to freeze when I watch Netflix. It doesn't happen everytime, but on days that it does, it seems like the problem reoccurs every 5-10 minutes if I try to continue watching.

    Because something is wrong.
You will need to troubleshoot to find out what needs to be fixed.
One of these suggestions may resolve your trouble.
FaceTime (and other video) quality problems can be caused by problems at either end of the connection.  Unless your video callers' FaceTime connections work properly with everyone else but you, both parities to the video call should consider these possibilities.
    (1) Restart your iPad and test again. Sometimes a simple restart fixes things.
    (2) Use a fast broadband internet connection for best possible FaceTime video.
Broadband speed matters at BOTH ends, so you use something like http://speedtest.net/ to test both ends of your video connections.
Speeds less than 300 Kbps (up and down) at both ends are unlikely to give best results.
    (3) Try from a different wi-fi connection.
If the problem is ONLY at your current location, restarting your internet connection may help.  Shut down your iPad or turn Airplane Mode "on".  Then check your cable connections, restart your modem and wireless access point, reconnect iPad to the wi-fi, and test again.
If the problem remains but ONLY at your current location, there may be a problem with your internet service.  Contact your ISP for help.
    (4) Always use as much light as possible for best images (including video) from your iPad.
