ISight stopped working!!

Thanks for your attention.
I was normally using my iSight all the time with Skype and Photo Booth, when suddenly yesterday my MacBook Pro was no longer able to activate the built-in iSight camera.
It did not appear available on Skype or Photo Booth . . . I tried to troubleshoot by restarting, resetting PRAM 5 times and resetting SMU (take out battery, hold power button for 5 secs), but to no avail of the problem.
I checked System Profiler and under USB it states that it's got iSight connected and running. However, no program could detect my iSight still.
This is VERY frustrating since I'm unable to fully webcam with my loved ones. I have AppleCare 3-year plan covered and I'm currently in the UK, but I prefer not to send my MacBook Pro for maintainence since I need it for my studies heavily.
Thank you VERY VERY much if you could be of any help.

You've done the thing(s) that might have fixed it (PRAM reset in particular) so now it's down to getting the hardware fixed and it will have to go in to Apple ...

  • Built-in iSight stops working on iMac--try re-setting SMU

I spent about two hours trying to figure out why my built-in iSight stopped working--all of a sudden it would show only a green screen in Photo Booth, black in iChat and not at all in iVideoHD, and not really register as available. It did show up in the Apple profiler of USB devices, and also, it would work in a non-apple program, iVisit. I did not install an HP printer, as another thread user commented on. I read about resetting the SMU in an Apple discussion and also in this forum, so I shut down the computer, pulled the power and everything else plugged into the computer and waited a minute, then plugged the computer back in and turned it on, then finally plugged back in my devices including keyboard and mouse (that was Apple's instructions). Vioala! iSight works again.

    Hi,
    For Others
As a Note on this some G5s are prone to not having the System Preferences > Displays set to Millions.
There is no direct evidence that it effects other computers but do check if your is still set to Millions and is not being commanded by a games app or something else to display less Colours.

  • Isight Stopped Working After Installing Quicktime Software Update

This afternoon when I logged into my Macbook, it automatically detected new software update for Quicktime. As always, I let the computer download and install the software. However, this time it created a lot of problems for me. First, I couldn't connect to my network (I use Airport Express) although the signal was strong. After reset modem, router and Airport, finally I could get on network. However, then I found out my Isight stopped working. The light on the right side of the built-in camera was always on (green). My Photo Booth screen appears green all the time. I no longer can use Skype video chat. Does anyone encounter the same problem? Can anyone help me out? I use Macbook, the operating system is OX 10.4.3. Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Freepisces
I have all the latest updates on my Macs, and I have no problem at all.
If you applied the latest (7.4.1) QT update, your problem may be due to the fact that the System Requirements for QuickTime 7.4.1 for Tiger include Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later, and you show that you are using Mac OS X (10.4.3). You can check which QT version you have installed using the QuickTime Player > About QuickTime Player menu command.
If your QT version is an older one that is compatible with your Mac OS, and if you have not done so since you applied the QT update, repairing permissions may help you.
If the problem is somehow related to your iSight rather than to your QT software, Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight may help you identify and fix your problem.
Unless you have a compelling reason for not doing so, you should consider updating to the latest version of Tiger (10.4.11). To find out what improvements you are missing by staying with 10.4.3, see some of the "About the Mac OS X 10.4.xx Update" documents for updates later than 10.4.3. A couple of examples are:
    • About the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Update (combo) and
    • About the Mac OS X 10.4.11 Update
If you are interested, other "About..." documents are linked in this search list.
Because System Requirements for the latest combo applicable to your MacBook, Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (Intel), are for Mac OS X 10.4.4 or later, you will need at least two steps to upgrade from your Mac OS X (10.4.3), so pay careful attention to the System Requirements of any updates you plan to apply.

  • ISight stopped working on Mavericks 10.9.2 update - CPU overloading

Last Feb 25, 2014, I updated my MacBook Pro to OS X v10.9.2. Since then, my iSight Camera stopped working and my CPU is overloading.
Observing in Activity Monitor: A ReportCrash process takes 100% of CPU usage.
Originally, I've updated with Combo package.
    Everything worked perfectly in 10.9.1.
    I tried reinstalling 10.9.2 package, tried using both Delta and Combo packages;
    I tried Repair File Permissions;
    I tried Disk Repair;
    ...and Nothing!
Because of that ReportCrash issue, I'm unable to update my Time Machine backup and reinstall the OS, once Time Machine application doesn´t start its process, don't know why!

    Hi, UnderEu,
I think to uninstall "AirParrot", "DiskplayLink" or simmialr Apps in Mavericaks, not only you have to move the Apps to Trash Bin, But also you need to uninstall their Audio & Video drivers & Settings. (which is the reason case the Crash of the system)
For the case of AirParrot, you need to do following command in Terminial Line to clear out the driver and setting:
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/APExtFramebuffer.kext
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/AirParrotDriver.kext

  • ISight stopped working on my macbook pro

Over the past couple of days my iSight has been randomly stopped working. I will be on iChat and all of the video icons will turn into phone icons as if I do not have a webcam. I check iChat and it says "There is no camera attached to this computer." I open photo booth and nothing will show up.
The problem was off and on for awhile but now it just has stopped working entirely... I've restarted my macbook and it doesn't change anything.
I really don't know what to do... Please help!

    Hello Professor Tim
    ... MODERATOR PLEASE HELP!!
What help do you need from a Moderator? (Apple currently calls them Hosts.)
If you can tell me what you need a Host to do, I can pass them a message.
Shouldn't need a Service Center call....
As another long time Mac user, I can offer you some other suggestions that may help you resolve your problem without a trip to an Apple Service Technician.
Because you are having problems with multiple (but not all) applications, I agree that your problem is software. All Apple video capable apps use components from QuickTime in addition the software in the application proper. If reinstalling the two apps that do not work does not resolve your problem, try reinstalling QuickTime, too.
If none of those reinstalls help, some of your other OS X system software may be damaged. How I eliminate that possibility and restore proper function is shown in this post:
       http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9458954&#9458954
If you have a Time Machine Backup, restoring your system software and problem applications from before your problem began may be the quickest and simplest way to repair the software component that is causing your current symptoms.  (Remember to backup important files separately before you begin restoring software.)
If you do not use Time Machine, or if your Time Machine restore does not provide lasting resolution, you can always try a proper Combo Update reinstall, A&I, and Erase&Install as suggested in the link above.
You can try Apple's suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 at each stage or your restore effort to determine which action corrects your problem.
We will watch for your response. Hopefully, you can report a fix!
    Cheers,
    EZ Jim

  • Built-in iSight Stopped Working -- Cause Identified

Like so many others here, I bought a new Intel-powered iMac recently, and we've been having a lot of fun with Photo Booth and iChat AV, and then, this afternoon, I got the dreaded message that the camera was not present or something else had it open.
I combed through lsof output and did not see a camera-like device node open, and System Profiler didn't show the camera either.
The very last change I had made prior to the camera going away was this: I installed the drivers for the HP Photosmart C3180 All-in-One that I purchased as part of the holiday rebate deal from the Apple Store.
Sure enough, if I unplug the printer and reboot, my iSight camera comes back. Something about the printer's driver is conflicting with the iSight's driver. I observed this using the drivers from the CD (version 7.8.0). I uninstalled the driver, unplugged the printer's USB cable, rebooted, and iSight was fine.
Note that HP has a version 7.9.1 driver disk image at their website, right here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-41988-1 &lc=en&cc=uk&dlc=en&product=1146331&os=219&lang=en . I've just installed it, and so far, my iSight camera still works. We'll see if it's still usable post-reboot.
    PowerBook G4 17 1.67GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   20" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.4.8)

My iSight survived a reboot after installing the HP Photosmart C3180 drivers, version 7.9.1.
So, for those of you currently having problems, if you have recently installed drivers for an HP printer, your salvation may lie in either of two routes:
    1) Obtain updated drivers from the HP website, and upgrade what you have, or
    2) Uninstall the HP drivers and use the gutenberg drivers for printing and SANE or equivalent for scanning. You'll probably have to have a separate card reader to get your pictures, as I don't know that anyone has yet been able to expose the built-in card reader on the Photosmart so that you can mount your flash media as you can with simple card readers.
    I hope this helps.

  • Macbook Pro's iSight stopped working.

    Hey there,
I just got a new MacBook Pro about a week ago. The iSight built in web-cam has been working fine for the past few weeks. I haven't used it in about a week now, and when I tried loading it up in iChat, Photo Booth, and Skype (all on the Apple OS), it doesn't detect it. I restarted the computer in windows xp(I have bootcamp), and Windows doesn't detect it at well. In the system utilites on the mac os it doesn't show up under USB devices either.
So far I've tried taht restart where you unplug the battery and AC and hold the power down for five seconds, but that hasn't worked. I also tried to re-install Quicktime just in case that did something, but it didn't.
Since it isn't showing up in either Windows or Mac, should I assume it got unplugged or something and take it to the Mac store? It's under warrenty, right? Does anyone know if it's an easy fix? I have finals coming up and will need my computer.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Dicsussions, Shadowiii
With all you have tried, you are right to be suspicious of the hardware.
To eliminate possibility of hardware conflicts, test with no other AV or USB peripherals connected. If the relevant suggestions from Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight don't then fix your problem, contact the retailer from whom you bought, Apple, or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
The service technicians will be able to answer your warranty question and tell you how long he will need to keep it for repairs. Depending on your needs, the difficulty of the problem, and your retailer's service and exchange policies on such a new Mac, you may decide to schedule the repairs at a later date.
To protect your important info, be sure to backup BEFORE you take your Mac for service.

  • ISight stopped working with windows messenger (bootcamp/parallels)

A few days ago I installed windows xp pro via bootcamp. After installing the drivers and everything, windows messenger was great with the iSight and everything. Just today I installed parallels, and after opening windows i no longer have a "webcam" installed, and i noticed that even my "speaker" and "Microphone" settings have gone back to "Intel(r) Integrated Audio"
Any ideas how i could get this working again? The audio actually works, but I just need windows to find my iSight again...

    Hi,
Parallels is not an application I have so I can not test this further.
I would think the answer may lie in the BootCamp forum where people may have tried the same thing as you or at any Parallels Forum you can find.
(Start here as there are links to the unintegrated ones).

  • My macbook pro 13 (2011) iSight stopped working after upgrade to Yosemite

After I upgraded my Macbook Pro 13' (2011) I sopped having iSight.
Tried in Photobooth, Facetime and Skype.
    I reads that I don't have a camera.
    Anybody has a solution??
    Thanks

    Hello VascoSilva,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Since you have already checked other applications, you know that the issue where your iSight camera not being detected is not application-specific.  Continue troubleshooting this issue with step #2 below.
    Built-in iSight cameras
These steps are for iSight cameras that are built into a computer, such as the iMac G5 (iSight) or later, the MacBook, or MacBook Pro.
See if the issue is application-specific.
Try another application (iSight works with applications like iChat, PhotoBooth, and iMovie HD 6) to see if the iSight camera exhibits the same behavior in all applications. If it only happens in one application, try reinstalling that application.
See if the issue is user-specific.
Test your iSight camera in another user account. If the issue only occurs in one user, the issue would be isolated to user settings.
Find out if the computer recognizes the iSight
Check System Profiler (in the Utilities folder, inside the Applications folder). Under the USB header, check to see if the iSight camera is detected.
    Reset SMC or PMU
Reset your computer's SMC or PMU, and then check System Profiler again. (SMC reset instructions for iMac G5 (iSight), Intel-based iMacs; PMU reset instructions for MacBook and MacBook Pro.)
If your built-in iSight camera is still not behaving correctly after trying all these steps, you may need to contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

    Take care,
    Alex H.

  • Built In iSight Stopped Working

One day about 3 weeks ago I was using PhotoBooth and then it crashed all of a sudden. Ever since then my built in iSight on my MacBook Pro hasn't worked. I go to the system profiler and it's not in there under USB devices.
Since then I have upgraded to 10.4.8 and I was hoping that the upgrade would fix the issue, but it hasn't. Also, it fails to show up in Windows now too when I boot over to that.
Has anyone had a similiar problem? I REALLY don't want to send my month old notebook in for repairs!

Before trying the apple/option/p/r thing, remove your battery and unplug the AC adapter. Then hold down the power button for 5 secs. After that, install the battery back and the AC adapter, try the apple/option/p/r thing.

  • Built-in iSight not working-black screen with every application

I have a MacBook laptop version 10.6.2 and just recently my built-in isight stopped working. i've had this laptop for about 2 years now and there have never been problems with the isight. i downloaded skype because i tried using ichat and my friends computer wouldn't video chat when i used ichat, but when i used skype it worked. so i've been using skype for about a month now... and just recently, i'd say like 2 weeks ago i went to use skype and the screen was completely black. the sound works, my friend said she could hear me she just couldn't see me. so i went into photo booth to see if the camera worked with that, and its a black screen on that app too! and when i take a picture it counts down like it normally would, but it doesn't even produce a picture, just a blank in the line of pictures at the bottom.. i also went into ichat and it has the same thing-black screen. i think the computer detects the camera, because it never said that it didn't... just the screen is always black.
just some other info.... when i go to use an application that uses isight, the green light on the right side of the camera lights up.. nothing else really happens though.
any information or diagnostic would be most appreciated!! thank you!

  • Macbook internal isight not working

I purchased a new macbook two months ago. isight worked great with photobooth, imovie, ichat. Suddenly isight is gone, no green light. Photobooth, imovie, ichat tell be that no camera is attached. If anyone has any ideas please let me know?

My macbook had the same problem. It began after I installed bootcamp, which I have since updated to 1.1. Whenever I boot into windows xp and then back into Os X, the isight stops working. In photobooth I get a blank green screen with a few scribbling lines of static at the top, but in ichat I get the "in use by other application" error.
I tried a system X reinstall, a bootcamp reinstall, zapping the PRAM, etc. etc. What really killed me was that the isight camera continued to work FINE in windows, but not at all in Os X (I could almost hear Bill Gates snickering).
The solution turned out to be resetting the power management unit by unplugging, removing the battery and holding down the power button for 5 seconds. Works without having to zap PRAM after.
The annoying thing is that I have to do this EVERY TIME after I have booted into windows if I want the camera to work in Os X.
As other users have pointed out, bootcamp now includes a package that updates the isight firmware.
Interestingly, this does NOT happen on my intel iMac, only the macbook.
I'm hoping for a more elegant fix.
    Anyone else?
    Jason
