ISight to Mac Mini

Is it possible to connect an iSight to an early Mac Mini
without Audio in and get audio from the iSight webcam? Can the audio come through the Firewire? Thanks

Hello bugman649,
Yes. The internal microphone in the iSight FW cable will work just fine for audio. And if you have other applications such as iChat or iMovie, you can use it there as well with picture & sound.

  • External iSight and Mac Mini 2011

I always loved the industrial design on the external isight and would like to buy one. How ever will it still work with my 2011 mac mini? And which isight revision should I look for? What are the differences among them?

    (1) If the old iSight you buy still works, it should work with your Mac mini.
        (But see ¶s 2. & 3. below.)
To connect the FW400 external iSight to your FW800 mini, you will need a Firewire 400-800 cable or adapter.  I suggest you have more than one of these so you can test whether any problem you encounter might be due to a bad connector.
Any working one(s) of something like those listed here should work to connect a FW400 external iSight:
    • This Firewire 400-800 cable can work:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/H7041ZM/A (I use this one.)
    • Some users report that this low-priced alternative cable works:
         http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189097
    • To use a FW400 6pin-6pin cable like that which came with external iSights, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter like one of these:
http://tinyurl.com/ydsbb6m  (I successfully use this one, too.)
If you encounter a problem, see Apple's troubleshooting suggestions here:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
    (2) I understand your attraction to the appearance of external iSight.
However, if I were buying another webcam today, I'd buy a new UVC (USB) webcam that has a warranty.  Based on my budget and the camera feature I wanted, I would select a compatible camera like one of those discussed here:
         http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
My external iSights (I have two) are great webcams, but they are getting old (as consumer electronics go.)  Both of mine still work as well as they did when they were new. However, some previously owned iSights may have suffered pretty rough treatment, and the only way to know whether any currently available external iSight works properly is to test it. If you still want to consider buying an External iSight, I suggest that you physically examine and test it on your system before you buy using the suggestions from this page:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
If you cannot try the external iSight before you buy, perhaps a trusted seller will give you a warranty for return or exchange privileges if the iSight will not work properly with your system.
    (3) Additionally, unlike USB webcams, external iSight can be finicky about sharing a Firewire connection.
Chaining external iSight with other Firewire devices on the same Firewire ports often causes function problems.  Because your mini has only one Firewire port, If your system includes other Firewire devices, you would most likely need to disconnect them in order to successfully use an external iSight with your mini.
    For more info, see http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage6.html
    (4) Info on iSight model versions: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage10.html
Which particular model revision would be much less important to me than being able to test an external iSight to make certain it works with your system.
If you use an Apple Cinema Display, the RevC's magnetic mount may be desirable.  However, other mounting solutions are possible: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage9.html
    (5) Your system info shows Windows® 7.
If you are considering using an external iSight with a PC, you should reconsider.  More info: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage12.html

  • Using a refurbished iSight with Mac Mini - possible?

    Hello.
I just got my girlfriend a Mac Mini and, after seeing all the posts with the web cam incompatibilities with the Mac Mini, I wanted to see if purchasing an old refurbished iSight would work instead of buying an off-the-shelf Logitech web cam.
The main purpose to be using this web cam is to do video conferencing using iChat.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi.
The USB Video Class cameras have built-in support since 10.4.9.
Have a look at the Creative Live! Cam Optia AF, which works right-out-of-the box with iChat and Skype.
The Creative Live! Cam Optia Pro is a little less pricey, and should work as good as the AF.
There's another (cheaper) model, the Live! Cam Optia, but it hasn't got a built-in mic.
    Good Luck.

  • Original iSight with Mac Mini

I'm trying to hook my original iSight camera up to my Mac Mini. I have a couple of questions...
Of course, the iSight uses the Firewire 400 cable. I have a 400 to 800 Adapter that came with my iPod 3G. Unfortunately that adapter does not seem to fit the Firewire 800 port on my mini. My question is, what adapter do I need?
Since iChat AV is no longer available, will the camera work with other applications? I specifically need to attend 2-way Video Conferences using Cisco's Jabber Application.
I have to be on a conference call in 5 days, so any information you can give would be very helpful.
I live in a rural area of New Mexico and there are no webcams available locally that work with Mac. Finances prevent me from traveling to a large town to purchase one until after the first of the month. Which is too late!
iSIGHT Cameral: Model A1023 circa 2003 (Silver Camera Body)
FIREWIRE ADAPTER: 6 Pin Female Firewire 400 to Male Firewire 800, came with iPod 3G 10B whenever that came out
COMPUTER: Late 2012 Mac Mini, 2.3GHz, 8GB Ram, 1T HD running OS X 10.9.4 (internal HD) and Yosemite for Public Beta Program (External HD)

I myself and other as discussed in this forum could not get the iSight camera to really work on a 2012 Mac Mini. It works but you get no sounds and only one frame every 20 seconds or so.
I also Googled and that showed the same.
    For compatible camera

Any UVC compatible camera should work with the native Apple drivers but not all features of the camera will be available

  • Confirm iSight with Mac mini (early 2009)?

Can someone please confirm that an iSight (external Firewire 400) camera actually works with their Mac mini (early 2009)? Of course, that will need a Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 adapter.
I can't get mine to work. I've used two different iSight cameras that work on other (older) Mac minis. I've used the cable that comes with the iSights and another Firewire 400 cable.
When I plug it in the iSight makes a noise and the light comes on briefly (for a second or two) and then it goes off. No applications that require a camera (like Photo Booth) see the camera.
I'm worried that this Mac mini may not have enough power to run the iSight, which is probably also an ominous sign for unpowered external Firewire drives.
    Thanks for any assistance.
    Cheers,
    Ashley.

Well, it seems that I have found my sad answer!!! The very same issue. New MAC MINI, Old and nice isight camera, which works perfectly well with my powerbook G4 even now, but not with my new mac mini.
I am sure I have the correct cable (it allowed migration of my entire admin account from my powerbook to my new mac mini), but it still does not work between isight and new mac mini.
Having said this, I certainly remember plugging my isight to my new mac mini using this new adapter cable (800-400mb/sec - orange flat one) and it was working at least i saw my image.
I do not remember which application i used (skype or ichat) but i certainly remember my satisfaction with my new cable. Since then i did not need video conversations, but yesterday i needed one, and i realized that my isight is not recognized by my macmini any more!
I am saying this because it might not be only a power issue, it could be that multiple updates of i sight on my old powerbook passed in block to my new mac mini and this allowed isight working. In contrast, those update are not installable on Leopard operating systems.
I think, since i saw those two devices (isight and new mac mini) working together nicely, i deleted my entire migration account (having found a different way of keeping only absolutely necessary things on my new mac mini). I was thinking about this all day today. Can this be it? drivers issue? the non-installable on Leopard updates that otherwise can be migrated en-block from the old system?
I am sorry to confuse you all, if I did, but what do you think about it please?

  • ISight audio Mac Mini

    Hi,
I can see this is a popular topic and have reviewed a bunch of posts, but I haven't solved the problem yet. I bought an isight of ebay for my Mac Mini, and now I can only get the video to work with all my apps no audio at all. I have changed settings for audio to default on isight. Also my isight only has 1.0.2 installed but I can't update since I am running snow leopard... Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks

    Welcome to Discussions, SFLALT
    (1) Start here to find out if your ebay iSight is functional:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html
If necessary, take the iSight to an Apple Store or VAR and ask to test it with known working cables on a known working Mac that is free of possible hardware or software conflicts.
    (2) If your Mac Mini system has no other microphone, you can select your ebay iSight's mic in System Preferences... > Sound > Input as your system's "*device for sound input:*".
Adjust the input volume level before closing the Sound preferences window.
Even when you are not using the camera, you will need to leave the iSight connected and turned on to use its mic.
    (3) In addition to iChat, Mac OS X (10.6.5) users can test external iSight with the Snow Leopard's Photo Booth and QuickTime Player (Version 10) apps.
You can also test with Flash based web video sites if you configure Flash settings to use
"*IIDC Firewire Video*." Fore more info about Flash settings see:
      http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10998007&#10998007
    (4) If your Mac Mini has only Firewire 800 ports, you can connect an external iSight to your FW800 Mac port in one of the following ways:
    • This Firewire 400-800 cable can work: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TP320LL/A
      (I use this one.)
    • Some report that this low-priced alternative cable works:
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189097"
    • To use a FW400 6pin-6pin cable, including the one that came with external iSight, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter like one of these:
      http://tinyurl.com/ydsbb6m  (I use this one.)
      http://tinyurl.com/cgll7o
      http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html
If you are having trouble, try a different connection method. Several users that encountered problems with used iSights have reported that changing to a different connector got their iSights working.
    (5) For possible benefit of other readers who might be considering buying an external iSight:
Apple has not sold external iSights for several years. However, you can sometimes still find them for sale in local ads, at computer stores, or on internet auction sites.
These external iSights are great cameras, but they are getting old as electronics go, and you have no idea how the one you buy now has been used or treated by its previous owner(s). As in this example, you may find that the item you buy is not functional:
      http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9015271
Therefore, I suggest that you buy locally and test any external iSight on your Mac before you pay for it. If you cannot do that, (try to) get a written guarantee that you can have the iSight examined by your Apple Authorized Service Provider and can have a refund or exchange if the iSight doesn't pass his checks.
Even if the external iSight you are considering is advertised as an NOS (new, old-stock) iSight, it may not be covered by Apple Warranty. If the seller is not providing you service guarantees or warranty, you may be want to check Apple's iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions, especially if you cannot test the iSight before you buy to be sure it is working.
Moreover, if you buy an external iSight now, verify whether all connectors, cables, and iSight mounts that you need are included. If some items you need are missing but you still want to buy the iSight, this info may be of interest.
    <hr width="85%">
If you cannot find a replacement external iSight or merely want to consider other alternatives, several alternatives are explained in http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/

  • Mac Mini & iSight

I have two Mac Minis, each connected to different iSight cameras. I use the iSight and Mac Mini to connect and talk to friends using Skype.
While talking, I frequently loose the mirophone function of the iSight. The solution is to unplug the iSight from the Mac Mini; sometimes only a reboot resolves.
This happens with both computers and both iSight cameras. Therefore, the likelihood of a "random" hardware problem is very small.
I am surprised that no one seems to raise this issue and all behave as if the iSight works properly.
    Does anyone have any idea?

    Hello all,
Only those who are using two Mac minis can have "exactly" the same problem as Vitor.
If you do not have a suggested solution for Vitor, I suggest that you post your problem in your own new thread. That way, your question can get the individual attention that it deserves.
Having come this far, if your testing shows that your problem is with your mini or your iSight, and if you have tried all the suggestions offered to Vitor, take your mini, your iSight. and your Firewire cable to your Apple-Authorized Service Provider. There are no user serviceable parts inside iSight. I suggest you take your mini, too, because your mini may need internal hardware repair.
If your testing shows that the problem is with Skype rather than with your iSight, you can take advantage of Skype's comprehensive Help features. For instance, one of Skype's Troubleshooter topics is "My mic is not working, no one can hear me."
If Skype's Troubleshooter does not help you with your Skype-specific problem, some of the other Skype Help options will. If:(1) you have tried all the suggestions offered to Vitor, and if
    (2) your iSight works with applications other thank Skype, but
    (3) your problems with Skype continue, your problem is with Skype, not with iSight.
Try searching for answers in the Skype Forums.
If you cannot find answers with a search, post your Skype-specific problem in the Skype for Mac OS X forum. You may get better suggestions from OS X users who also use Skype.
If the Skype forums fail you, too, Contact Skype Customer Support for a direct response to your particular problem from Skype Technical Support.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • Question about mac mini applecare

i'm getting a new mac mini soon, and hesitating if i need to buy applecare with it. got several questions about the applecare for mac mini:
1.if i upgrade the hard drive of mac mini, which will void the warranty of applecare, will the apple display & wireless keyboard & mouse that i purchase along with mac mini still be under applecare warranty?
2.if i sell the mac mini after one year, will the apple display, keyboard, mouse still under the protection of applecare?
3.i already have a wireless mighty mouse (within one year of purchase) before purchasing mac mini, may i add it to the applecare?
4.if i purchase iSight with mac mini, will be it under the protection of applecare as well?
    appreciate any help!!

    I'll try to help:
    1. Are you a certified Apple Authorized Service Provider? If you are not and you damage anything, the repair will not be covered by the original warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan. I would be up to the service technician doing a repair in the future to tell you if the entire warranty was voided by your actions or not. Since we're all users and none of us work for Apple, we cannot speak for Apple. I would suspect, however I can't be certain, Apple would still give you service for the peripherals since they were not involved in the original incident.
    2. The warranty for the peripherals will travel with the computer. If you no longer own the computer, you will not be able to get service for those parts. If you sell your Mac mini, you have two options: Transfer the AppleCare Protection Plan to the new owner or get a refund for the amount of time you have not used. I would suggest you sell the peripherals with the Mac mini and the AppleCare Protection Plan. This would be a valuable add-on to your sale. Or you can keep the peripherals to use with your next Mac and they'll be covered by your new AppleCare Protection Plan.
    3. You do not need to "enroll" all your peripherals. As long as you own the computer with the AppleCare Protection Plan, you will get support for the peripherals you're using. For example, Apple gave me support for the AirPort Express that I bought before my Mac mini with a plan. As long as it's a mouse, keyboard or AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme, they're covered no matter when you purchased them. However, for a display to be covered, you must purchase the display at the same time or purchase a separate AppleCare Protection Plan for the display.
    4. The AppleCare Protection Plan FAQ (link is a PDF) does not specify that an iSight is a covered peripheral.

  • Unable to record just audio with Mac Mini - no isight

I am trying to use Podcast Capture on a mac mini connected to a generic monitor (no isight) and it is unable to initialize the audio subsystem. I am assuming this has to do with it needing a video camera, but surely that isn't required to record an audio only podcast. I have a microphone plugged into the line in and it works successfully in Garageband. Please help!

Take a look at Soundflower, which will allow you to record audio from any source:

  • What cable do i need to use to connect my grandson's old style external isight webcam to his 2014 Mac mini in order for him to be able to FaceTime me

what cable do i need to use to connect my grandson's old style external isight webcam to his 2014 Mac mini in order for him to be able to FaceTime me

You need either a FireWire 800 to FW 400 cable or a FR 800 (male)/FW(female) adopter.
However. it the Mini (note that you still have the late 2012 Mini, Apple has not updated the Mini since then) has Mavericks it may not work satisfactorily. I tried it on my 2102 and I get abount 1 frame every 20 seconds. Another uses posted same problem.
However, it it work fine on my late 2009 Mini with Mavericks

  • Will old iSight camera work with new Mac mini?

will an old isight camera work with a late 2014 Mac mini? If so what adapters will I need?

Matthewlopez wrote: will an old isight camera work with a late 2014 Mac mini?...
Yes (if the old external iSight works.)
Apple's long ago discontinued Firewire External iSights were great webcams, but they are old (as consumer electronics go) and some may have had pretty rough treatment. Even NOS (new old stock) items may have been damaged in storage or handling.
If you have access to an external iSight, you can test it using the suggestions from this page: http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage4.html.  To reduce the possibility of conflicts for old Firewire iSights, I suggest you disconnect all other Firewire peripherals until you get your external iSight working with your mini. Then connect other needed items one at a time and test each to determine whether you can use any without conflict.
If you are considering buying an external iSight now, a new webcam (with warranty) may be a better choice. Many available alternatives are listed here: http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/
If you want more examples of external iSight and newer minis, take a look at some of the results of this search for your question.
Matthewlopez wrote: ... If so what adapters will I need?
You will need a Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter.  This adapter offers only a Firewire 800 connection.
The Firewire connection on old external iSights is a Firewire 400 connector.  Therefore, you need some way to connect to the FW800 connector on your adapter:
    • To use the FW400 6pin-6pin cable that comes with iSight, you can use a 6pin-9pin adapter
      like one of these:
      http://tinyurl.com/ydsbb6m&emsp; (I use this one.)

    • This Firewire 400-800 cable can work:
      http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA833ZM/A/ (I use this one.)
    • Some report that this low-priced alternative cable works:

Use one of the following ways to connect your FW400 external iSight to a FW800 Mac port:

I suggest you disconnect other Firewire devices until you get external iSight working with your mini. Once iSight works when it is the only FW connected device, you can try connecting other Firewire devices to determine whehter you can use any of them without conflict.

With your 10.6.3 mini, you can use QuickTime X, iChat, Photo Booth, iMovie, and some of the other apps that are installed with OS X. Your Mac's Help for each of these apps can tell you how to use them with iSight (or other connected cameras.)
Some more apps you can use are shown in this list:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage7.html
The web links for each app gives details on what functions is offers with your webcam.
    Many Thanks
    You're welcome.

  • External iSight mic not working with facetime.  Snow Leopard, mac mini w/ firewire v1.0.2, 800/400 firewire adapter

External iSight camera connected via Firewire adapter 800/400 to a Mac Mini running Snow Leopard - a visual signal comes up for iChat and FaceTime, only sometimes does a video signal comes up for PhotoBooth, always no sound for any of the applications.  System Preferences "Sound" shows "Input Level" set around 75%, however only periodically do I see blue bar move, almost like a short in the cable, but the adapter is new.  Firewire firmware is v1.0.2.  Tried to use firewire updater to get 1.0.3, but updater won't update for Snow Leopard.  For being advertized as the world's most advanced OS, seems like Apple OS could at least work with Apple External iSight camera !  Any help much appreciated on fixing the missing sound.

This means that my Firewire 400 ports on the display are no longer supported by the computer?
They need a FireWire connection to the computer. With older computers, the FireWire cable from the display would plug in to a computer FW400 port to provide the connection. With FW800 only computers, you need the adapter.
