ISight updater

Ok, I have the latest Mac OS and I keep it up to date with the software updater and I'm quite annoyed with the Apple people because there hasnt been an update for the iSight cam that will work with the latest Mac OS, or any version past 10.3.9 for that matter and this really ticks me off because Apple should definitely support their products especially for people who have no better option since a cam isnt built in. Does anyone have a clue as to how or when this situation will be resolved because I have an iSight cam that is pretty much toast right now since it seems to need an update. And if the Apple people aren't going to put an update out there is there another one out there that will work in its place?

Hi rplaut6456,
The Forums are User to User help.
Apple Supply the Web space and therefore the Moderators (Hosts).
In the past there used to be more Hosts whose only job at Apple was to monitor, garner info (about common issues) and moderate the Discussions.
It can not be guaranteed that any one from Apple will actually read your Post.
Some applications even when they are running do not always keep the Mac Awake.
I have not heard of this problem before but think it unlikely it is the iSight firmware (unless yours has not been updated to match the version of SightSpeed you have).
As this thread has been about getting an External iSight updated, possibly with the help of someone who still runs Panther - Do you have any friends that fill that criteria ?

  • Can't iinstal iSight updater 1.0.2 for my OS X.2.8 mac

Boy am I frustrated. My mac isn't that old and I'm having a bad time finding proper assistance from the apple sight. Seems like if you don't have at least Panther, you're NO ONE!!! And my mac's only a couple years old - I run 10.2.8 and it was EXPENSIVE.
Anyway my brother got me an isight camera so we could communicate while he is overseas. Trying to iinstall the iSight updator from the following page http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/isightfwupdater.html and it downloads the 1.3 version. OF COURSE. SHOULD I BE SHOCKED? NO.
Does anyone have any siggestions, or do I have to give Apple more of my hard earned money and now upgrade to Panther in order to get anything working correctly? Seems like the same problem exists for browsers now. Really frustrating. I'v ebeen a loyal apple customer for a very long time. Sometimes I don't feel much appreciated by them, especially when I keep having to BUY upgrades.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Hi Kristin,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
I am a little surprised to find that a Mac "Only a couple of years old" was sold with 10.2.x on it. (or even 10.1.x if you paid for Jaguar)
Jaguar came with iChat 1.x which can not Video or Audio chat.
There was later a Beta (up to May 2004) and then a Paid for A/V version of iChat that was taken off the market on the weekend of 4th Oct 2004.
The only way to get iChat 2 (A/V) for Jaguar is for someone to give it to you.
I am not in a position to say where to go to get someone to do this. (Apple regards it as Against the User Aggreement).
Any source is not likely to be posted in the open about this.
Most Broswers are free for Macs but that is a different question.

  • ISight Updater 1.0.3

    I'm running OSX 10.4.3 on a dual 2 G5.
When I try to run the iSight updater for 1.0.3 it won't update... saying can't do it on this computer. I currently have 1.0.2.
My nephew, who has a G5 running 10.4.3. currently DOES have 1.0.3 as his iSight driver, which he downloaded as the update.
    What's up?
Also.. I notice that his incoming video has a soft look, while others look much crisper. Could this be a bad camera? He has a fast connection, as do I.
    Thanks!

Hello Rick. If your iSight works well on your Mac and your iChat AV does not tell you that you need to update, I would not be concerned about adding this software. When using the Tiger OS, either your Mac's Software Update... or iChat AV will tell you if you need to update.I currently have 1.0.2.Do you know this from your System Profiler information, or are you basing your statement only on the fact that you have a folder named "iSight Updater 1.0.2" in Finder > Go > Utilities?... the iSight updater ... can't do it on this computer. My nephew ... DOES have 1.0.3...What's up?
My guess is that your nephew installed the 1.0.3 update while he was still using Panther. As explained in iSight Updater (1.0.3), Panther is required for the update, but a later upgrade to the Tiger OS would have left the 1.0.3 Update in place.
All necessary software is installed with your Tiger install or came pre-installed if your Mac shipped with Tiger.I notice that his incoming video has a soft look, while others look much crisper. Could this be a bad camera? There are many possible causes of a soft image in iChat AV 3. The most common are lack of adequate bandwidth and processor power.
Because iChat AV 3 dynamically allocates bandwidth between the parties involved in a given chat, both of you should Check your Broadband Speed.
Because of this dynamic allocation, I suggest that both users who are parties to any problem connection test with more than one other user in order to determine which system is really causing the problem.
Suggestions for maximizing your Mac's performance with iChat AV 3 are shown in Help for iChat AV 3 Problems.
The suggestions in Improving Your iSight's Picture may also help all users.
If your nephew is concerned that he has a bad camera, he can check his iSight using the suggestions in Common PC Chat Applications and iChat.

  • Isight updater with mac osx 10.4...help!

    Hi
I'm trying to download the updater and i got this error message
This update does not work with Mac OS X 10.4 or later
is there anything i can do? ive just worked out that after 6 ipods not working over 3 yrs...technical support have just told me to unplug isight from my imac and the ipod worked! crazy, but to use it while ipod is connected i need to update the software if anyone can pls help?
    thankyou
    sophie

    Hello Sophie,
Which update are you trying to download? Can you paste a link to it?
I am confused because your title says "isight updater with mac osx 10.4...help!", but your system info shows that you are using Mac OS X (10.3.8).
If you have Mac OS X 10.4.x, all needed iSight updaters are installed.
If you are trying to use iSight simultaneously with a Firewire-connected iPod, the iPod may be inducing a conflict. See the Possible hardware or software conflicts with iSight. FAQ for more info.
I do not use iPod. You will get better help with your iPod questions at your other post of this same question: my 6th ipod finally works....guess how?!!!

  • Cannot update or install iSight from Apple site.

I have downloaded this update from the Apple website and my computer is not allowing me to install it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL502
When I try and open up the udate I get this message from Apple:
"iSightUpdater103.pkg" can't be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.
Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers.
"iSightUpdater103.pkg" is on the disk image
"iSightUpdater103.dmg". Safari downloaded this disk image today at 11:22 AM from support.apple.com.
I have changed my secrity preferences to allow the installation of this but I still keep getting the same message. I would like to know if there is another way to download this software. I did not see it in the App Store so I think this might be the only place to download the software.
Thanks in advace for your help!

    (1)  The iSight updater you refer to can not do what you want on your system:
kj8 wrote: The camera is not looking good since I've updated to Mavericks....
iSight Updater 1.0.3 will not run on your OS X Mavericks (10.9.2).    Requirements for http://support.apple.com/kb/DL502 include, in part,: Mac OS X v10.3.7-10.3.9.
kj8 wrote:... Was hoping that the old update would help fix the auto exposure, white blance, performance...
Even if your Mac were running a 10.3.7-10.3.9 version of OS X, because 1.0.3 Updater's effect is limited to ONLY "Improved audio performance", you would not obtain the hoped for fix for "auto exposure, white blance, performance..."
    (2) If your old external iSight is no longer providing adequate video quality after considering the suggestions in iSight camera failure after OS X 10.9 Mavericks update, you may need to test your iSight and its cable and/or Firewire adapters using methods like those suggested in this old article entitled How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional.
    (3) If your old external iSight needs service, consider the info in Apple - Support - iSight - Service FAQ.
    (4) Alternatively, you may want to consider a new USB webcam such as one of those discussed in Apple Compatible Webcams For Mac OSX .

  • External iSight Revision 1.0 will not update firmware

I've had an external iSight since its first release. Worked great with my old Power Mac G4 FW800, then I loaned it to my father who rarely used it. I've since recovered it along with its original FW cable, but it requires the 1.0.3 firmware update.
I've got TWO old Mac Mini G4s (1.25 and 1.42 Ghz) both running Mac OS X 10.5.8 and this is what both of their System Profilers report:
    iSight:
    Manufacturer: Apple Computer, Inc.
    Model: 0x8
    GUID: 0xA270000001B2A
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 200 Mb/sec
    Sub-units:
    iSight Unit:
    Unit Software Version: 0x102
    Unit Spec ID: 0xA02D
    iSight Unit:
    Unit Software Version: 0x10
    Unit Spec ID: 0xA27
    iSight Unit:
    Unit Software Version: 0x11
    Unit Spec ID: 0xA27
    iSight Unit:
    Unit Software Version: 0x12
    Unit Spec ID: 0xA27
    Product Revision Level: 1.0
I followed the exact instructions for updating the firmware using a Mac OS 10.5.x machine in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10084429. After entering an administrator's Name and Password, the iSight Updater window appears but the "Install" button is grayed out and non-functional.
This happened on two different computers and two different user accounts. No FW hubs and no other FW devices were connected to either of the Mac Minis. I'm using Screen Sharing to control the Mac Mini the iSight is currently connected to, and only the Ethernet cable and the iSight are plugged into the Mac Mini -- no USB devices are plugged in. The iSight is not recognized in either of the computers' iChat applications.
I'd love to find a Mac running 10.3.x to try the Updater located in the Downloads section of this site, but it's hard enough finding a Mac that will allow me to install 10.3.x, let alone run it. The Power Mac G4 FW800 I own had its power supply die a month ago, otherwise I would've installed Panther on a partition and tried that by now.
Any last suggestions before I head to the Genius Bar? I honestly don't think the iSight needs hardware repair; it just needs an iSight Firmware Updater that will recognize it. Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to Discussions, A-Jay85
Well done on your research, troubleshooting, and a well-documented and well-written topic!
I doubt that Firmware Update is your problem, but here is my last suggestion. I do not think you can screen share external iSights without a display. Try connecting a display rather than using Screen Sharing. Alternatively, connect your external iSight to the Mac that has the display to continue troubleshooting.

Trouble Shooting an iSight Camera.  (Version 3)
Hi,     On many subjects Apple has Articles and Documents that can help.
In some case they are written by an Engineer or similar and can miss the mark for the average user.
In other cases they are crafted, detailed responses to an issue that has popped up many times in the Apple Discussions and take the best from many responses in those User-to-User Discussions, creating something that can not be surpassed.
This is the case of the Apple Article HT2090 on Trouble Shooting an iSight.
It lists steps and processes to go through for both Internal iSights and External ones.
However as with most things it does sometime pay to reword things differently so that people grasp the points in language they understand.
The info here is a reworking itself of two pages at ralphjohns.co.uk/EZ Jim pages namely EZ JIm's page 2 Where can I Find Help With My iSight ? and his page 4, How Can I Test My iSight is Completely Functional ?  which were written several years ago and predate the Apple Article, being aimed at the External iSight.  They have been updated since to address the Internal iSight as well but some of the comments are useful between the two types.
External First.  For Internal iSights Start at 2b)  (you will need to adjust some options/steps as the Internal is USB)
    Steps
    1) Pre Purchase
If buying an External iSight you should if you an get to see it in action.Apple no longer sells the External iSight so you will be buying it second hand.If you cannot get to see the device plugged in and working on  Mac then check the smaller print of the seller and selling site as to nature of Returns and Faulty Goods.
    2) Does it work ?
    a) First of all Plug it in.  It should come with a suitable mount (although there are variants on this) and a 6 pin to 6 pin Firewire cable.
Ideally it should have it's own Firewire port/socket on your computer. Connecting it "DaisyChained" to other devices can be a problem as they do not all use Firewire at the same Data speed.
It will then go through some checks as the OS powers it up and checks it's firmware.
Do not be concerned that the little green indicator light atop your iSight illuminates for a few seconds and then goes dark when you first connect your iSight or power on your Mac. Do not be concerned if you hear a soft whir as iSight attempt to focus either. Both these occurrences are normal. If your iSight passes the following tests, do not worry about this sound or the status of the green light.
There is no ON switch as such.  It does have an iris mechanism that can be controlled by the User.  The iris should be turned so you can see the Lens for the iSight to send pictures to an application.
    b) Pick an Application to see the picture the iSight produces.iChat is one application you can use. Photobooth is another. iMovie (Version 4 or above for external iSight -- Version 6 or above for in-built iSight) and Comic Book (if bundled on your Mac) are yet more.
See this Users Tip for more applications Or this page for yet more.
Photo Booth is probably the simplest as it has no Preferences to choose a camera in the original version and is done from the Menu items in later versions  (nor is there any setting in the OS) and Photo Booth will default to the External Camera if one is plugged in before the application is started.     If you see your self or what the camera is pointing at, It Works !!
    3) If it does Not Work
    a) Check Cables/leads.  Re-seat the cable at both ends. DO this carefully as although Firewire cables are keyed to fit the right way it has been known to force them the wrong way.
Try another 6 pin to 6 pin firewire cable.
    b) Unplug the cable from any other FireWire device and give the iSight it's Own FireWire port/socket on the Mac (exclude issues with other FireWire devices). It is important that this be a port/socket on your computer and that you know that it works. Do not use a port in a FireWire hub or another FireWire device or a FireWire port in an Apple Display for testing.  (Also see d below if you have an 800 FIreWIre Computer)
    c) Check System Profiler (Apple Icon menu top Left > About this Mac. > More Info Button)Open the Reveal Triangles to see the list and go to Hardware > FireWire.  (Use USB for Internal Cameras)
If it appears here try booting or Logging in as another user on the Mac (Create a Test account if you don't have one) and try item 2b) above again.
    d) With FireWire 800 computers you may have to change your FireWire 400 to 800 Adaptor or Cable to get full Audio functionality with Lion Apps
If it is not in the System Profiler you are almost certainly going to need the Trouble Shooting Article from Apple at this point.  This Article may also be of help (number HT1317 What to do if your computer won't recognise a FireWire or USB device).
If you have not resolved things at this stage it is going to be time for an Engineer with Apple credentials. There are no user serviceable parts inside any iSight.
    Other Items
    Audio.
The External Camera has two mics inside. The volume it records at or plays through for iChat is controlled in System Preferences > Sound > Input tab (select device) and this should be set to get the blue response bar to at least half way (preferably three quarters) when you talk. The same applies to any other Mic, even the Internal one on laptops and some other Macs.
    Firmware.
The System Profiler as detailed above should tell you the Firmware the iSight has.  The current version is 1.0.3 and was updated in Panther.  (Essentially it is an Audio compatibility update but does seem to help in other situations)
If your computer is running Panther (10.2.x) then use this Updater
If running Tiger (10.4.x) or Leopard (10.5.x) then navigate manually to your Hard Drive/System/Library/Core Services/iSight Updater and run the updater found there.
If an iSight is Plugged in on the Computer when you do an  OS update and the firmware needs updating on the iSight this app is supposed to be triggered but it seem it may need a hand at times.
    Focusing on the External iSight
Essentially the External iSight is self or Autofocusing.
If in doubt then try better lighting and strong colours as opposes to light or pastels.
(All built-in iSights are fixed focus. Therefore, unless a built-in iSight lens cover is dirty or smudged, any built-in iSight whose image is blurry needs service by an Engineer with Apple credentials.)
EZ Jim has these more specific recommendations for piece of mind.
Make a cross whose lines are about one-half inch or more wide on a plain background to use as a focus target. (I have even used black electrical tape.)
Turn on plenty of light and hold the target very still at about two or three feet from the lens. Watch iSight focus. (You may need to use a tripod or brace yourself to hold the target still enough.)
Then quickly move the target and hold it very still at about one foot away from the lens. Watch iSight focus.
Finally, move in to about six inches from iSight, and check focus there, too. (Holding the target still is more important as you get closer to iSight.)

  • New Mac Pro vs firewire iSight

I have a mid 2010 Mac pro dual quad, I just got my hands on a new never used firewire iSight. Problem 1 the new mac's have changed the firewire configuration, luckily I had an adapter I bought when I purchased my 2010 macbook pro. problem 2 the camera only worked with iChat. After searching the forums, and trying everything from resetting the PRAM etc... I ran across this old thread

Thus the camera being still new, but old had the old 1.02 firmware, and needed to be updated to 1.03. Problem 3 Snow leopard does not have the updater, you need 10.5 or older to update the firmware. Lucky for me I had an old Blue iMac in the corner (that was another project), I fired it up and updated the firmware. Now life is good, the camera works with all the apps. The thread is old, but I found it to be the most help. Hats off to EZ Jim & company!

    You're welcome.
    Thanks for the kind words.
To save some searching for readers running Mac OS X 10.4 or later who are trying to manually
upgrade external (Firewire) iSight's Firmware to version 1.0.3, your options are here:
     http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10084429&#10084429
    <hr width="85%">
Alternatively, user Malcolm Rayfield has suggested another way to apply the
1.0.3 iSight firmware update *using a Snow Leopard Mac.*
    • Download the updater that was provided for Mac OS X 10.3.7-10.3.9 from
      http://support.apple.com/downloads/iSightUpdater_1_03
    • Double click the iSightUpdater103.dmg if necessary to see the "iSightUpdater103.pkg" .
    • Right-click the iSightUpdater103.pkg icon and click "Show Package Contents."
    • Open the Contents folder and double-click the Archive.pax.gz file.
    • That will unzip an Applications folder that contains a Utilities folder.
    • Inside the Utilities folder is the iSight Updater 1.0.3 folder.
    • Open the the iSight Updater 1.0.3 folder to find the iSight Updater 1.0.3 app.
    • Double clicking the iSight Updater 1.0.3 app will run it.
    • Note that iSight Updater 1.0.3 is a PowerPC application, so your 10.6 Mac will need Rosetta to run it.
If you have not already installed Rosetta, click the Updater and follow your Mac's on-screen instructions.
If you have difficulty or merely do not want to add Rosetta to your Mac, your Apple Tech
can do the firmware for you, or you can use one of the other options described in the link above.

    Trouble Shooting an iSight Camera.
    Hi,
On many subjects Apple has Articles and Documents that can help.
If buying an External iSight you should if you an get to see it in action.
Apple no longer sells the External iSight so you will be buying it second hand.
If you cannot get to see the device plugged in and working on Mac then check the smaller print of the seller and selling site as to nature of Returns and Faulty Goods.
The iris should be turned so you can see the Lens for the iSight to send pictures to an application.
    b) Pick an Application to see the picture the iSight produces.
iChat is one, Photobooth is another, iMovie (Version 4 or above), Comic Book if bundled on your Mac are yet more.
See this Users Tip for more applications Or this page for yet more.
Photo Booth is probably the simplest as it has no Preferences to choose a camera and the OS and Photo Booth will default to the External Camera if one is plugged in before the application is started.
If you see your self or what the camera is pointing at, It Works !!
    3) If it does Not Work
    a) Check Cables/leads.
Re-seat the cable at both ends. DO this carefully as although Firewire cables are keyed to fit the right way it has been known to force them the wrong way.
Try another 6 pin to 6 pin firewire cable.
    b) Unplug the cable form any other Firewire device and give the iSight it's Own Firewire port/socket on the Mac (exclude issues with other Firewire devices).
Use a firewire port on your Mac that you know works.
    c) Check System Profiler (Apple Icon menu top Left > About this Mac. > More Info Button)
Open the Reveal Triangles to see the list and go to Hardware > Firewire. (Use USB for Internal Cameras)
If it appears here try booting or Logging in as another user on the Mac (Create a Test account if you don't have one) and try item 2b) above again.
If it is not in the System Profiler you are almost certainly going to need the Trouble Shooting Article from Apple at this point.
This Article may also be of help (number HT1317 What to do if your computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device).
If you have not resolved things at this stage it s going to be time for an Engineer with Apple credentials.
    Other Items
If running Tiger (10.4.x) or Leopard (10.5.x) then navigate manually to your Hard Drive/System/Library/Core Services/iSght Updater and run the updater found there.

  • Isight no longer works after snow leopard upgrade

my isight no longer is available directly after snow leopard upgrade on my macbook black. Anyone else with the same problem? The isight does not show up in 'about this mac' under USB and I tried resetting SMC and PRAM.

    Hi,
In Leopard there was an App called iSight Update app that was in Hard Drive/System/Library/Core Services
This does not seem to be there in Snow Leopard.
An issue with some computers with the camera was that in System Preferences > Displays the Colours needed to be set to Millions.
Also check the Hard Drive/System/Library/Extensions folder and see that you have the Apple_iSight.kext (this is likely to handle the Internal iSights as well).
    One last thing.
Some Web sites can make use of the camera using Flash.
If that tab is still open the Browser may have use of the camera.
It sounds like you have done computer restarts and this will not be the case unless the browser is set to go back to that page.

  • ISight microphone not working on Brand New Leopard Install Solved

    Hi everybody,
I had this problems during last days, and after solving it I want to share it with everybody thinking it may be helpful.
I got ten brand new never used iSights and I wanna to use them on a few MacPro Intel 2xCpu QuadCore 2,8 OS X 10.5.4 to 10.5.7 for videoconferencing using Skype and iChat.
With the video everything was fine but there was any solution to make the built-in iSight microphone works.
After a week googling and talking around I found by myself that the problems was the camera firmware.
Mac OS X 10.5.x doesn't update the iSight firmware so the audio mic doesn't work.
If you connect the camera to an old OS X (I used 10.4.11), open iChat and log in, it will ask you to update the iSight firmware to the latest version.
After that, if you unplug the camera and put it back to OS X 10.5.x the audio mic magically works.
Hoping to help somebody else I give my best regards,
    Michele Eustacchi
    Rome, Italy

If you running 10.5.X the updater is found here, go to your hard drive\System\Library\CoreServices\iSight Updaters\iSight Updater
    For external iSights only.

  • I cannot get my new second isight to work on my titanium G 4 powerbook

    My situation is as follows:
I have a macbook pro and Mac-Mini both with the intel chip and a 12 and 17 inch Powerbook G 4. and a Titanium G 4 Powerbook 15 inch. I have isight on the macbook pro and purchased a two isight devices to use on my other computers. The isight is working on all my computers except the titanium G 4 powerbook I use the Titanium G 4 Powerbook in my office. The computer in my office is the older Titanium and I recently bought a isight device for it. I cannot seem to get this computer to fully have the video become hooked up to the titanium G 4. The computer seems to identify the isight but cannot gain any isight video contact with my other computers. I use my own network and use aol and .mac. The titanium is in my office where all use windows and an internal network and road runner e-mail.
When I open ichat and attempt to open preferences of ichat i get the following message.
    NSInvalidArgumentException:
    * -[NSCFDictionary setObject:forKey:]: attempt to insert nil value
The software in the Titanium power book is system 10.4.8 and the ichat is version 3.1.5 and in utilities the folder is isight updater 1.0.3. I am at a loss at how to further address this problem.
    Please advise.

  • External iSight problems revisited

    My original post here: http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10805558
After further research, I actually have the exact same problem detailed in this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1014900 ("Your camera is in use by another application" error message persists after exhausting all troubleshooting options)
I went to the Genius Bar with my iSight thinking it needs a firmware update. The Genius found out he could not apply the update unless he was booted into 10.3.9, and their OS install disks did not go back that far. So I went home and clean installed 10.3, the 10.3.9 Combo Update, and all other updates listed in Software Update (including a fresh iSight Updater 1.0.3!) onto a new partition in my Mac Mini G4.
After attempting a firmware update and looking at /Library/Logs/iSightUpdater.log on my 10.3.9 system, I believe the reason my iSight is not recognized is that it cannot read the Serial Number or Firmware Version of my iSight, and therefore does not add it to the device list. Here are the Console messages from iSightUpdater.log running on my 10.3.9 system:
2010-12-11 13:09:10 -0800: iSightUpdater was launched by Finder.

Notice that the Serial Number and Firmware Version were not retrieved by the system. The system recognizes that an iSight has been plugged in, but will not release it for use with other applications since its Serial Number and Firmware Version cannot be determined.

Aha! The Serial Number and Firmware Version were present in both of those updates, and I didn't need a firmware update after all. It seems that somewhere between the last firmware update and now, the iSight forgot its Serial Number and Firmware Version numbers -- or the last firmware update inadvertently flashed those two pieces of information from the iSight's memory.
I think if I could plant those two numbers back in the iSight's memory, I think I could get it working again. Problem is, Apple doesn't support scheduling repairs or Express Lane callbacks for the external iSight. Sooo... I, and all other external iSight owners with this problem, are stuck.
I'd love to get this repaired and use my external iSight with my Mac Mini G4. I just wish there was a next step, now that I have potentially identified the problem. Any ideas out there? I don't want to pay $150 to receive a reconditioned iSight for what appears to be a much simpler software/firmware fix. I do live in the San Francisco Bay Area, so driving to Cupertino and handing off an iSight for a quick repair by an iSight engineer would be an easy solution for me.
Thanks for listening, and I hope that this post sheds some light on other people with persistent "Your camera is in use by another application" error messages.

    Hi,
I am not going to override EZ Jim's advice on this as I do not know any way of recovering the lost Serial Number of Firmware version the devices is currently at.
Mostly it is for other readers but may provide clues.
The iSight Updater for Firmware 1.0.3 is included in the OS files as a Standalone Updater in Leopard
It seems it is also activated if the camera is Plugged In when Software Update is run. (I don't have enough info if it is specific 10.5.x Updates or just a General thing that happens.)
It is also present in the same place in 10.4.11 (I do not have copies earlier that this of Tiger that I can check)
    In Use By Another Application.
    It could actually be so.
    Check:-
Comic Book if bundled with your Mac.
System Preferences > Accounts > Changing the Account Pic can invoke the camera for A Snapshot.
Any other app that can capture Video or a Pic. (iMovie, Quicktime Pro in Leopard and below, PhotoBooth. Don't forget Image Capture or your Browser if using Flash Chat sites or using the Google Broswer Plug-in installed in Chrome or as a Standalone (Intel only) and many others)
Check that in System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items does not list any app that can use the camera.
It seems that if an App that uses the camera (and was using it at the time) "Unexpectedly Quits" the System in general will think the camera is still in use (Possibly because that app's .plist will say it is)
The most common fix for this if you cannot find which App is using the camera is to do a SMC/PMU restart. (this link has three expandable areas that look like Links near the bottom of the page for various Macs).
Most Times the System will catch which apps have "Crashed"/Unexpectedly Quit and they are recorded in a Log. Open Console in Application/Utilities and then the Reveal Triangles to see ~/Library/Logs/Crash Reporter and see if any app is listed.
SEEK ADVICE on deleting .plists if you think you have identified the culprit, as doing so for some apps is more destructive than others.
    Summary so far.
The Genius could have done it with a Tiger Install or Leopard Install Disk.
If you have a Retail Copy to do your Updates or either you can invoke the Update yourself (Providing you can get System Profiler to "See" the camera correctly)
A SMC/PMU reset maybe enough to "Clear" the System of what Apps it thinks is using the Camera.
There are some unexpected places and apps that can cause or actually use the camera.
A Fresh Install, as seems to be the case here, would have created a new set of .plists anyway.
I would also suggest that any other Firewire device is removed.
The External iSight should not be Daisy Chained with other items such as External Hard Drives as they run at different Data rates.
If you have a Computer with tow of more Firewire Ports I would suggest trying another port.
Some Towers have Firewire ports front and back and these have separate Firewire Controllers. This may isolate whether it is a Firewire port issue.
USB and Firewire Ports can be reset if the Power is removed from the computer for 15 Mins (power removed if a Laptop as the Firewire ports can still be active if the power cable is still connected)
I will state again that in this case I think EZ Jim has the right, quickest and simplest answer.
I have posted this mainly for other readers that may have something similar but not quite the same.

  • ISight works fine in iChat but doesn't show up in Yahoo Messenger nor Skype

Hello, I was given an iSight webcam that works fine in iChat, but doesn't show up in Yahoo Messenger nor Skype, which are the IM programs I use…
I search on the Apple Support site a driver to download, but there is only an updater (iSight Updater 1.0.3) which doesn't run on Tiger... Any help please ?? Thx

You probably don't need it, but the Tiger "iSight Updater" is located in the \System\Library\CoreServices\iSight Updaters\iSight Updater folder.
(You must look manually because SpotLight does not find it.)
Double click the "iSight Updater" there to run the Firmware update manually.

iSight "Product Revision Level" in your Mac's System Profiler shows the installed firmware version for external (Firewire) iSight.
Firmware 1.0.3 Update offers only "Improved audio performance". It does NOT enable audio or any other function, so that is NOT your problem with Skype or YMM. Search or post in their dedicated help/discussions for best and quickest help with those specific, non-Apple apps.
Regardless of whether System Profiler utility shows Firewire iSight's Firmware (Product) level of 1.0.2 or 1.0.3, external iSight ought to work. You can test your external iSight using the suggestions on this linked page:

  • Where is Photo Booth & how to get iSight to work in iChat

Just set up a new 2.4 iMac for my daughter yesterday (purchased new directly from Apple). Today she says she can't access Photo Booth, which she is familiar with from using my son's MBP. I did a Search (Command-F) for "photo Booth" but came up with nothing. I also doubled clicked on the iSight Updater which was on the hard drive in the Application / Utilities Folder. It told me it couldn't find iSight!
    Any ideas?

    Hello Fastdude
Based on your info, my idea is that someone has deleted it.
Finder finds Photo Booth on my Mac.
Reinstall if you want it back.

Stop clicking on the iSight Updater that is in your Application / Utilities Folder. It was apparently "migrated" there when you got a new Mac or installed Leopard. It is not needed after you have once installed it on an external Firewire iSight that was using a pre-Tiger version of Mac OS X.
