Will a FireWire 800 to 400 adaptor get my iSight to work on a new Mini? Is there a USB3 adaptor that would work?

Delville wrote: Will a FireWire 800 to 400 adaptor get my iSight to work on a new Mini? ...
Yes, it is possible.  If the old external iSight you have still works, it should work with the newer Macs.  You can test an external iSight using the suggestions in this link.
To connect your old external (Firewire 400) iSight to your Mac mini (Late 2012), you will need a cable or adapter that can connect the FW400 external iSight to your mini's FW800 or Thunderbolt port.  If you don't already have such, Apple offers these possibilities:  FireWire Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.)  There are also 9 pin to 6 pin Firewire adapters like this one if you need such.  Your local computer store may have other alternatives.
Delville wrote: ... Is there a USB3 adaptor that would work?
No.  USB and Firewire are completely different technologies.  Your old (Firewire) iSight will not work with ANY kind of USB.
If you want to use USB for your webcam, get a compatible camera such as one from this list of Mac Compatible Web Cameras.   Other cams that are USB compatible can work, too, and USB connections are not bothered by these Possible Hardware or Software Conflicts.

  • Isight used by other application

    Hi!
I have a problem with my isight which happened from one day to an other. The camera is recognized by the system I already checked in the System Profiler, however I still cant use it with any of the applications since it keeps telling me that it is in use by an other application.
Any ideas?I've tried everything I could think of and what I read about here and there.
    Thanks!

First check to be sure you do not have any forgotten or unknown login items or widgets that are using your iSight.
Then, if the problem remains, and if you have tried everything (except contacting Apple for service) in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 without success, and if you get no better help suggestions from other iNtel Mac users, ...
    (0) Disconnect everything but your internet connection and restart your MacBook.
    (1) Repair Permissions
    (2) download http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_4_11_Combo_Update__Intel
    (3) install the 10.4.11 Combo Update
    (4) After the restart that completes the install, immediately Repair Permissions again.
    (5) Check whether your application software (more than one application if possible) now properly uses iSight.
    (6) If it works now, reconnect any peripherals you disconnected, and check again.
    (7) If nothing else works, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.

  • Is iSight using internal USB BUS in Bootcamp (win xp ) mode?

    Hello,
I am having issues with my musicall instrument that is plugged into Mac Book Pro 15" 2.0 Core Duo 1G RAM. The instrument is plugged into one of the USB port of MBP.
I would like to know if iSight in WinXP mode is using internal USB bus.
If it is, how can I disable it? Using device manager in Win xp?
    Thanks in advance,
    MT

Same problem here exactly. I can't do anything with this stupid message box because both mouse and keyboard are not responsive.
It used to work in the past, it probably stopped working after upgrading to Snow Leopard. Please, someone come up with a workaround !

  • Isight use with Safari

I am trying to use my iSight with a web based web chat system. I can not get the iSight to turn on and send a video signal. I have no problem with my DV camera and Safari and the iSight even works (although with poor image quality) on my Widows XP box with Internet Explorer. The service works with Macromedia Flash and their web sit says they support the iSight. So I don't know where the problem lies. My iSight works great with iChat. I am using Mac OS X 10.4.2 and Safari 2.0.1

    Hello Steve,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Each "web based web chat system" has its own requirements.
Because your Safari and iSight are both working, the problem likely lies with other requirements of the web sites that give you trouble. If their help or support pages do not help you, contact the site's web master for help.

  • Recording smooth video with iSight using Glow effect

I want to use iSight's Glow effect with a video recording. PhotoBooth software does it very jerkily. iChat does it smoothly, but I don't see a way of recording video without having a chat with someone. iMovie 08 doesn't seem to be able to create the Glow effect. Any ideas how to do this?

    Hello Steve Mouzon
The closest you will likely come to Photo Booth's Glow with the other apps you mention is to try the Video FX in iMovie 6 HD's "Editing" window. Some experimentation will let you know if it can meet your needs.
If iMovie 6 HD was not installed along with your iMovie '08, see this post for help:

If you need more powerful effects control than that, you can consider the professional applications like Motion that make up Final Cut Studio. For more info, take a look at RedTruck's post here or other Final Cut Studio > Final Cut Pro Discussions topics.
Other alternatives that may be worth your consideration are ADOBE AFTER EFFECTS CS3 PROFESSIONAL or creating your own "glow" filter.

  • Isight used for other video chats

Is it possible for you to use your webcam for other video chatting sights ? I have been trying to video chat online with my friends in college in atl, but its not really recognizing my webcam. I have the Imac with the built in isight. Can anyone help me ?

As Ralph has already posted, iChat is the clear winner for quality and features in Mac to Mac video chat, but there are LOTS of other choices. If you have iChat quesitons, Ralph and his comprehensive iChat FAQs site will help you with the answers.
Other video chat apps are shown in the "Chatting and Conferencing" section of Some Applications You Can Use With iSight
If you are trying to use your OS X Mac to video chat with a PC user who will use nothing but MSN Messenger or Microsoft Messenger, use aMSN or Mercury on your Mac to get video (but no audio) when you text chat with him.
Additionally , there are web based video sites such as Stickam (to use them, configure your "Flash" settings as described in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4761707&#4761707 ), and video conferencing sites like MeBeam (see the "MeBeam ™ Blog" page for instructions.) There are many others.

  • What optical drive does the G5 iSight use?

My question relates to the G5 iSight model. A friend has given me his to fix since the original drive no longer reads.
What kind of drive can I use? A standard laptop slot loading drive or does it have to be an apple certified Superdrive?
Thanks for your help on this.

If you go to the Apple logo and click About this Mac, then on More Info, then in under Hardware, click on Disk Burning, and it will show what Superdrive was installed - probably the Matshita DVD-R UJ-846.
They are not the most 'sturdy' of items, alledgedly because thay were originally designed for a Macbook (horizontal operation, whereas in the iMac they are asked to work in the vertical position).
Mine failed a few months ago, in as much as it would do everything except burn DVDs. For that I now use an external Samsung Super Writemaster DVD writer that cost the reasonable amount of £27 from Amazon! Works a treat. I saw no good reason to pay up to £200 for a more sophisticated make and model!
Getting an internal Superdrive replaced by an Apple Centre or authorised dealer would cost a lot more.
    Your call!

  • Can I use my MacBook's built-in iSight camera to record footage in FCE?

I want to know if I can use footage I shot with the built in iSight camera. My regular video camera is not working, and I have some footage taken from my iSight camera. Is there anyway I can use my built in iSight camera in Final Cut Express 4?

  • Using Magnetic iSight Mount ( with FW iSight ) on iMac 2007

Guess this is not a smart question...
I am able to "mount" the original Firewire iSight using the Magnetic Mount on top of the iMac 2007 ( with built-in iSight ).
So under this scenario, does the "magnetic field" from the Mount may have any side-effects over the built-in iSight circuits or other interior components?
(especially when I mount the external iSight right in the middle of the iMac that is ... on top of the built-in iSight ) Thx!

Do you feel any magnetic pull when you move the mount over the center but not touching? If not, you can't use that mount there, it will simply slide off.

  • ISight sound system prefs; using w/o using iChat

There's a website I need to record myself speaking for for a class, and I'd like to be able to do so without having iChat open. However, it was only working when iChat was open. and my status was available. Is there something I need to change?
Also, in System Preferences, I only saw Internal Microphone listed under Sound, not iSight. What might be the problem?
    Thanks!

    Hello Christopher
First, your System Preferences issue. Your iSight must be plugged in before it can show in System Preferences... > Sound > Input. If your iSight does not show when it is plugged in and turned on, restart and see if the problem goes away. If not, unplug and reconnect your iSight and check to see whether the problem goes away. If your problem persists, you can test your iSight using these suggestions. Pay particular attention to the possibilities of faulty cables, connections, or ports.
I may not understand your question about recording yourself speaking via iChat. Do you mean that you must have iChat launched but not running in order to use iMovie or QuickTime Pro to capture movie clip of yourself? If so, have you tried restarting? If restart does not resolve the problem, and if you have not recently performed your regular Mac OS X Maintenance, do so now and see if that helps.
You might also consider trying other applications that can make video or movie clips with your iSight. Perhaps one of them will work for you.
If you are trying to use a video website for the recording, see the Help, FAQs, Support pages, or seek help from the web-master of that site. Many video web-sites have unique requirements, and they should be best able to answer your compatibility, configuration, and operating questions concerning their particular operations. You may only need to configure your Flash Player settings for what you want to do. This response to streetartist711 may help you get started:

  • ISight & Remote not working...

    Dear Mac Support Forum,
This is my first post here at the forums although I’ve been browsing them for some time now.
I hit the trifecta of problems so I wasn’t sure where exactly to do this post. Hope you can help.
    Latest Updates:
    iTunes 7.5
    Quick Time 7.3.1
    MAC OS X 10.4.11 Update
    Issues:
    1. I-pod touch is not showing up in iTunes.
    2. I-sight is not working (Photo Booth once selected shows the following message “the camera is in use by another application”). No other applications are running.
    3. Remote can not open or run Front Row.
    • NOTE: all stopped working at the same time after my latest software update so I believe they are related in someway. No 3rd party apps were installed in the mean time.
    Tried & unsuccessful solutions:
    1. Fully charged the i-pod.
    2. Deleted & reinstalled latest version of iTunes.
    3. Disconnected & reconnected the i-pod several times using different USB ports to the machine.
    4. Restarted the i-pod several times.
    5. Restarted the MacBook several times.
    6. Reinstalled (Apple Mobile Device Service).
    7. Restarted the MacBook in safe mode.
    8. Attempted to pair the remote with the MacBook by holding down the Menu and Next/FFWD button.
    9. I reset the System Management Controller (SMC) several times.
    10. Under System Preference > Security > “Disable remote control infrared receiver" option is unchecked.
    11. Deleted & reinstalled the latest version of Quick Time.
    12. Tried using the remote with another MacBook & it worked fine.
    13. Went to System Preference > Account > Login Item, and uncheck all the applications.
    NOTE:
    1. Although once connected to another PC the i-pod is immediately recognized by i-tunes.
    2. I-pod only charges once connected to the MacBook.
    3. The i-pod, IR receiver & i-sight all appear under the USB section of the System Profiler.
    4. Front Row can still be run using the keyboard short cuts.
Can you please come up with any suggestion other then the ones tried above to solve these issues.
    Thanks for your support.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, hishamonline
Very well done Topic! Thanks for such a good and thorough description.
You have landed in iSight discussions, and I see that you have tried many of the things that users can do to correct iSight problems. It can be very difficult to try to troubleshoot multiple devices simultaneously, so I will first give you my suggestions for your iSight issue. It is possible that something you try for iSight will fix one of your other problems even if it does not fix iSight. To keep the process as simple as possible, whether a given suggestion fixes iSight, one of your other problems, or noting at all, I suggest you continue to concentrate iSight until we get that resolved. Then we will move on to any other remaining issues.
I see that you have done a lot of updating, installing, and uninstalling. You do not say how you accomplished those actions. If you repaired permissions before and after any install, update, or uninstall that require you to input your Administrator Password, and if you used an Apple uninstaller or followed Apple's directions for how to uninstall, the updates/installs/uninstalls should not have caused any problems. If you merely dragged application folders to the trash, you most likely did not uninstall properly. Don't worry about that now, but, for your future consideration, it is generally a bad idea to move, modify, rename, or delete any item outside your User > Documents folder unless you are an experienced OS X user.
Now, onward to get iSight working. If you have not done so since your last software install or update, your first step should be to quit all running applications and then repair permissions. Then try Photo Booth again to see if your iSight works with it now.
If repairing permissions does not help, your next step should be to disconnect everything from your MacBook, restart, and troubleshoot iSight using all suggestions relevant to your system from How to Troubleshoot iSight to determine whether your iSight needs professional service. If, after using the suggestions there, you can make iSight work with any application in any user account you try, you know that your iSight works. Your problem is in some other part of your system.
If your iSight does not work right after trying everything above, post back and tell us:
    (1) which, if any, applications work with your iSight
    (2) which apps you tried that do not work with your iSight
    (3) if EVERY problem is EXACTLY the same in EVERY user account your tried
    (4) whether your iPod touch, Photo Booth, and Remote ever worked correctly
    (5) if they did, what changed immediately before each problem began, and
    (6) if all three problems began at the same time.
We will offer more specific suggestions based on the details in your response.
    EZ Jim
