ISight with 10.5?

Hello,
I have one of the older external iSights. I wanted to set it up with my PowerMac G4 running 10.5. When I plug it in all it does is make a noise and the green light on the top turns on for a second then shuts back off. I tried plugging it into both my MacBook Pro and my Powermac. On the PowerMac the iSight does not show up in iChat. Is there something I can do? Could it just be broken?
Thanks!

Hello Brandon
You can use these suggestions to test your external iSight to ensure it is functional and troubleshoot problems. If iSight works on other Macs or with at least one app on your problem Mac, your iSight is not the cause of your problem.
If your iSight checks out, and if your problem is ONLY on the Mac that has the NewerTechnology Upgrade check with NewerTechnology to see if there are known issues or a fix in the works for your NewerTechnology device.
If there is no NewerTechnology fix and your only problem is iChat, you can check the free demo of iChatUSBCam to see whether that add-on software will get your processor-upgraded Mac working. (I know your external iSight is a Firewire cam. iChatUSBCam does some other things in addition to enabling use of USB webcams, and it costs nothing to try.) To avoid possible future problems, if you decide not to buy the iChatUSBCam add-on software, be sure to follow the instructions and uninstall the free demo before the demo period expires.

iMac G5 (iSight) with 10.4.11:  Screen always dimmed. Starts at full bright and a second later dimms and stays like that forever.  Brightness controls work normally under this circunstance.  Please help !!!
Please don't tell me to adjust anything on the preferences, since I have tried all.  I think it may be anoter kind of problem, maybe hardware related or anything.
I ran the Hardware repair DVD and everything was ok, but when the imac restarted the screen was very lit again, but when it went sleep, when it went awake again the screen got dimmed again.  Because of that I think that the problem could be software related, but who knows.  Excuse my english.

I can't see another possible answer - the longer your machine is up, the more the power supply is stressed, it protects itself by dimming the screen to lower the draw on it.

  • ISight with Windows XP?

Can i use an isight with Windows XP?

No, i mean, if it is possible to connect isight with a Winows XP maschine? It is possible if your PC has a Firewire connection. However, nobody has ever reported being able to make iSight's mic work on a PC regardless of which drivers or ancillary software they have added to the PC. That is why, in my previous response, I posted "Not recommended. iSight and the PC"Jim

  • ISight with Skype and aMSN - inverted picture

When I use iSight with Skype or aMSN, the picture is horizontally inverted and no longer functions as if I'm looking into a mirror like with iChat.
There are no options in either program to change this (that I can find). Does anyone know of a solution? I would like flip it horizontally so the image is as if I was looking into a mirror as per iChat.
    Thanks

    Hello Mr_Harley,
Did you get enough info from Tony (Defcom) to consider your question Answered?
I know of no cheaper solution to your problem for both Skype and aMSN than the $8 iGlasses suggestion than Tony offered, but there may be individual solutions that some aMSN or Skype users could recommend.
If you are willing to consider different software for each application, you can search the great Skype Help pages for Skype-specific help or post your question in the Skype for Mac OS X forum.
For a aMSN-specific solution, try a search or post in the aMSN Forum.
If you need more suggestions or information before you can mark this question "Answered," please let us know what part of your Topic still needs to be addressed, and we will try to give you some other suggestions.

Open the Connection Doctor in the Video menu
In the Capabilities Option does it suggest you are "too Slow" for some functions ?
If so then go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab and change the speed to 1.5MBps and Restart iChat.

  • ISight with Core Solo Mini

    Hello,
I wonder if someone knows the answer to this. My mother is in L.A. and I am in New York, and I want to get her a Mac mini Core Solo and an iSight camera so she can talk to me and my family (her grand kids). Would a base model Core Solo be able to handle the iSight camera? We're talking about straightforward one-on-one video conferencing between what would her Mac mini and my iMac. She already has an older monitor, USB keyboard and mouse, so the price point of a Core Solo and iSight camera is just perfect. iSight with iChat are the most processor intensive apps she'll be using on the computer. Has anyone tried it with a Core Solo?
iMac Core Dup 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

As you'll see at the bottom of this page, even a G3 can initiate a 1-to-1 video conference. A Core Solo is much more powerful than any G3, and iChat is Universal (no Rosetta emulation), so a Core Solo is more than what you need (you could even consider a 4-way chat .
If you have Cable or DSL internet then you must have at least 100 Kbps downstream (probably more), but you have to make sure that you have at least 100 Kbps upstream if you want good image & sound.

  • I am trying to isight with someone. Both of us have no problem reaching B

My first problem, with just one person - I am trying to isight with personA. I have no problem reaching personB and personA has no problem reaching personB. But we cannot get on with each other. And I don;t mean we are trying to do this at the saqme time. THis is as a completely separate chat (neither of us is on with personB anymore).
As a secondary question: is there a way to 3-way video conference?

I'm not sure why you are having problems with one person, while the other is not. Is person B in another country?
As far as a 3 way video conference goes, yes you can as long the host and the particpants meet the specfications listed here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/ichat/

  • External Apple isight with a imac G5

Really need help to figure this one out.
I have not used this isight before it has been bought secondhand.
Trying to use an external Apple isight with a imac G5 (without built in isight) running on Leopard OSX 10.5.8.
looked in my Utilities and can't find anything relating to isight.
Done system update and tried to download isight updater 1.0.3 but that does not work for OSX 10.4 or later.
    Many thanks for your time
    Additional Details:
Also when I go into System profiler and look in FireWire it says unknown device.
    and also went into:
    finder/system/library/coreservices/isightupdater
It will ask me to plug in an isight (which I do) to install and still nothing happens.
& also best till last - No green light what so ever
Do you think it maybe broken?
I really hope not as it was sold as fully working

    Welcome to Discussions, jonsonby
Based on the info you posted, if Defcom's good suggestion does not restore proper function, I think the external iSight is defective.
The simplest way to test that for certain is to connect your iSight (use the same cable you use) to another Mac, particularly one that works with a known-good external iSight. If you do not have access to another Mac and/or another external iSight for testing, a local Apple retailer may be able to do the test for you at little or no cost.

  • Trouble using external iSight with MacBook Pro (which has built in camera)

    Hey Jim,
Have a question for you. I have a new MacBook Pro 17". I also have a 23" Cinema Display, and a left over Firewire external iSight camera (which I used to love).
Frequently I "dock" my MBP with my 23". I either use the dual-screen between the two, or I close the lid on the MBP, let it go to sleep, then wake it back up with a BT keyboard or mouse, letting it go to a single-screen mode on only the 23" Cinema Display.
So, I'm trying to use my external Firewire iSight with my MBP, and I'm getting mixed results -- the best of which is where I am getting some video with regular, occasional freezes with the picture being split (like a v-hold problem on an old TV). After a pause it goes back to smooth video.
I guess primarily, I'm wanting to know what the world of two iSights (FW and built-in) look like, and can they work together? I cannot for the life of me get this FW iSight to work consistently, but I know it works perfectly in another G5 tower (which has no built-in camera).
    Any suggestions or guidance?

    Hello Exivus
... two iSights (FW and built-in) ... can they work together?
You can have two iSights connected at one time, but, as explained in Apple's iSight "Your camera is in use by another application" message, iSight can be used by only one application at a time. (my emphasis)
Different apps select between multiple connected cameras in different ways. For instance, iChat > Preferences... > Video settings can select which camera to use with the iChat app, but iMovie 6 uses a drop-down menu as shown in this picture:
The suggestions in How to Troubleshoot iSight should help you determine whether one of your iSights is causing trouble. I suggest you test each one separately and without your external display or other peripherals to rule out possible conflicts.
After you are certain that your iSights are working individually, test them when both are connected. After your system successfully passes these tests, you can add your external devices back one-by-one to be sure one of them is not causing the problem.

this is my first attempt at using iMovie-and i iSight camera>search: here's what it sez>
You can capture live video with your built-in iSight camera and import it directly into iMovie HD.
To capture live video with a built-in iSight camera:
    1. Open iMovie HD by clicking its icon in the Dock (or choosing Applications > iMovie HD).
    2. Click the mode switch to set iMovie HD to built-in camera mode.
    3. Click the camera icon to the left of the mode switch and choose Built-in iSight from the pop-up menu.
    4. Click the “Record With iSight” button in the iMovie monitor to begin recording. The video you see in the iMovie monitor is recorded as a clip in the iMovie Clips pane.
    5. Click the “Record With iSight” button again to stop recording.
You can record video as long as your iMac has enough disk space to store it.
well, the first problem is >2. what are my options after clicking Dock icon:
create a New Project (never had one)
Open an existing (again, never had one)
Make a Magic iMovie >>now that's interesting, but what the hey is it? Directions didn't mention this?
what should i do: Magic or New ??
So i'll choose Open New...name it "taDec"
    Problems Immediately!!> gotta create and store> oh my...but i get a screen/window named "taDec" > ((frig the spellin' !!))
where's the "mode switch"?>>there isn't a "mode switch"> nor is there in "the menu"...?
there is nothing about "i Sight camera" anywhere....so it can't be chosen....
yeah, i'm still searchin'......trying to make a video of me with a friggin tooth ache trying to use "HELP"!((and this 'Forum'> note this, i'm takin' 6 asperin and a large vodka Egg Nog! > it better get better!!
(this 'Earthmouse' is starting to act weirdlhy too.....(-:
    m

Create a New Project (of course you haven't had one it's new!) and choose a location to save it to.
Throw the Mode Switch from the scissors (Edit Mode) towards the left where the picture of camera is (Capture/Import Mode).
(As you can see I don't have an iSight attached)HTH

  • Connecting my iSight with non-iSight cams

Hello. I am trying to connect my iSight with friends who have pc cams and am unable to do so. What do I need to do to resolve this?

    Hi cci55,
They need XP preferably at Service Pack 2.
They need either AIM 6.1 or AIM 5.9 (Definitely NOT AIM 6.0 called Triton).
    They could Trillian Pro
They then need to allow the app they use as an Exception though their XP firewall
The AIM 6.1 app needs to be allowed as AIM6.exe rather than just AIM which will do AIM 5.9
If they are using AIM 5.9 it may also need "Tuning" See message 570 onwards.
These options will allow you to use iChat.
You may need to set your Mac Firewall if it is ON
See the second pic here http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/page4.html#_ports
You are almost certainly going to need to allow iChat to get through your modem or router by opening or allowing Ports there.

  • ISight with Yahoo

does anyone have any pointers on using my isight with yahoo and MSN messenger? when I use it the picture received at the other end is always dark yet on my screen it looks fine. the room is always well lit with a ceiling light and two side lamps - one on either side. but still my family complain that the picture is too dark and they can't see me. what can I do? are there any settings/ brightness I can adjust? I'm using it on a G4 powerbook. my family all use PC's. thanks and best wishes,
    Owen.

First, Test your iSight to determine whether it is working correctly with any software. If iSight works correctly with Apple software, then your problem is with to Yahoo! Messenger for Mac (YM) rather than with your iSight.
If your iSight works properly, you might consider these tips for Improving Your iSight's Picture.
Video requires much more light than most people consider bright room lighting. However, if your iSight works well with Apple Software, you can try deleting the YM preferences from your UserName/Library/Preferences folder. Here is how to delete the preferences:• Quit YM.
    • Delete the "com.yahoo.Messenger.plist"
    • Delete every "com.yahoo.Messenger.Users. yourYM_userName.plist" file. There will be one "yourYM_userName" .plist file for each YM screen name that you have established. Your camera settings are saved in each "yourYM_userName" .plist file, so all of them must be deleted.
    • Restart YM
    • Set your preferences again.
    • Test YM to see if it is working correctly. If YM still does not work, download and install the free trial version of iGlasses. iGlasses will allow you to manually set your iSight's brightness (and several other) settings, If it does what you need pay its modest price. Otherwise, uninstall it as instructed to avoid Possible software conflicts.
You can find other users' experience with iSight problems and fixes by searching "iSight Discussions for Yahoo".
Please let us know how you get it working.
    Cheers,
    Jim
