ISight with Magnets

My daughter just received an ISight camera which has been backorderd for six weeks - unpacked it - and watched her computer screen go blue. Apparently the camera is shipped with some unmarked magnets (which are only mentioned in the fine print of the manual - not labeled with any warnings) which seems to have wiped out her hard drive. What do we do now??

Are you completely sure that it is a magnet that has caused the symptoms you describe? I ask this because it takes a fairly strong magnet to wipe a hard drive. Every Apple laptop has a set of magnets in the latch mechenism, which is placed in quite close proximity to the hard drive, with no ill effects.
I imagine that the magnet you are describing is in the cinema display mount, which magnetically latches to the back of the newer aluminum cinema displays. Unless that magnet is much more powerful than it would need to be to hold up the iSight, I do not think it would be capable of wiping a hard drive unless you practically rubbed it on the surface of the drive, and even then it is questionable.
I recommend you thorougly investigate any other possible causes for the symptoms you describe before pursuing the matter as a magnet related issue.

is there any way in ichat in 10.6 or some other way to have the image flipped the right way up?
I have installed the Chax 3 beta and cant seem to do it in there unless I am missing something
    You help would be great!!

  • Using isight with two different OS

I have a G4 running OS10.2.8 and I want to connect to my son who has a iMac G5 running 10.4. I want to buy 2x iSight cams, one for each of us, and want to know if this set up will work.
Thanx a bunch for any help.

    Hello Lan,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
In addition to Bill's good comments, I offer the following:
If you currently have iChat AV 2.0 for Jaguar, you will be able to chat with your son provided he meets HIS requirements and you have broadband internet service. You can be sure about which version of iChat you have by issuing the
    b iChat > About iChat
    menu command.
The link Bill cites shows Apple's System Requirements for iChat AV 3. This would require that you upgrade your 10.2.x system to 10.4.2
See this page for System Requirements for iChat AV 2.1. This would require that you upgrade your 10.2.x system to 10.3.9
Mac OS X 10.2.x originally came with iChat 1.0. iChat versions earlier than v2.0 will NOT do video. If you do not already own iChat AV 2 for Jaguar, you will need to upgrade your Mac OS to get video capability.
At one time, Apple sold an iChat AV 2.0 upgrade for the original (non-AV) Jaguar iChat, but they stopped selling (or supporting) it in October, 2004.
My Mac OS Panther install disks include the Panther version of iChat AV 2.0. A free iChat AV 2.1 Updater is available from Apple to bring the Panther version of iChat AV to the most current
    b Panther
version, which offers one-to-one audio and video capability. (This is an Updater ONLY. It requires iChat AV already be installed from your Panther installer disks.)
The only way to buy iChat AV from Apple nowadays is to buy Tiger, Mac OS X 10.4.x, which includes iChat AV 3. iChat AV 3 is capable of multi-party text and audio conferencing for those who meet the System Requirements for iChat AV 3. Tiger's Mac OS X 10.4.2 Update upgrades you to the current iChat AV 3.0.1.
If you need more info on iChat AV, see the iChat AV Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) or the iChat AV Discussions.
You may also be interested in the the iSight Tips and FAQ. As implied in the How To Ensure Your iSight Is Functional FAQ, new users may want to consider buying iSight at a brick and mortar store.
Ask for a demonstration of the very same iSight you will take home. This will let you see how easy it is to connect, let you verify that it works, and give you an opportunity to ask any questions where you can

    the responses applied.
If you have a Mac notebook, heed the magnetic mount warning in the What Mounting Hardware is available for iSight? FAQ.
This response has grown longer that I thought, but once both you and your son are using the same Mac OS, you can eliminate all the other possibilities described above.

  • IMac G5 (iSight) with 10.4.11:  Screen always dimmed. Starts at full bright and a second later dimms and stays like that forever.  Brightness controls work normally under this circunstance.  Please help !!!

iMac G5 (iSight) with 10.4.11:  Screen always dimmed. Starts at full bright and a second later dimms and stays like that forever.  Brightness controls work normally under this circunstance.  Please help !!!
Please don't tell me to adjust anything on the preferences, since I have tried all.  I think it may be anoter kind of problem, maybe hardware related or anything.
I ran the Hardware repair DVD and everything was ok, but when the imac restarted the screen was very lit again, but when it went sleep, when it went awake again the screen got dimmed again.  Because of that I think that the problem could be software related, but who knows.  Excuse my english.

I can't see another possible answer - the longer your machine is up, the more the power supply is stressed, it protects itself by dimming the screen to lower the draw on it.

  • Why iPad mini retina smart unlock/lock function not working when I using 3rd party cover with magnetic

I recently bought a leather case from store with smArt unlock/lock function with magnetic. I try to use it on my iPad mini retina when I try to close and open it doesn't work. I already on my smart unlock function inside setting. May I know where is the magnetic area  of iPad mini retina ?

The "Lock/Unlock" feature is enabled by installing a compatible Smart Cover/Case (or third-party equivalent) with an embedded magnet in the correct position in the cover. Are you using a real Apple product? If not, the cover/case you are using may not have the magnet in the right place or may not even have one at all.
If you ARE using a real Apple Smart Cover/Case and you have an Apple Store nearby, have them check both the case and cover you are using. You may have a bad magnectic switch on the iPad or a faulty cover/case.
I also remember reading here of a Smart Case/Cover which had the magnet installed upside-down and was repelling rather than attracting. You might want to take the cover off and flip it to verify this...you'll have to slide the cover around in different positions on the right-hand bezel on the iPad to see if you can activate the magnet.

  • ISight with Windows XP?

Can i use an isight with Windows XP?

No, i mean, if it is possible to connect isight with a Winows XP maschine? It is possible if your PC has a Firewire connection. However, nobody has ever reported being able to make iSight's mic work on a PC regardless of which drivers or ancillary software they have added to the PC. That is why, in my previous response, I posted "Not recommended. iSight and the PC"Jim

  • ISight with Skype and aMSN - inverted picture

When I use iSight with Skype or aMSN, the picture is horizontally inverted and no longer functions as if I'm looking into a mirror like with iChat.
There are no options in either program to change this (that I can find). Does anyone know of a solution? I would like flip it horizontally so the image is as if I was looking into a mirror as per iChat.

    Hello Mr_Harley,
Did you get enough info from Tony (Defcom) to consider your question Answered?
I know of no cheaper solution to your problem for both Skype and aMSN than the $8 iGlasses suggestion than Tony offered, but there may be individual solutions that some aMSN or Skype users could recommend.
If you are willing to consider different software for each application, you can search the great Skype Help pages for Skype-specific help or post your question in the Skype for Mac OS X forum.
For a aMSN-specific solution, try a search or post in the aMSN Forum.

Open the Connection Doctor in the Video menu
In the Capabilities Option does it suggest you are "too Slow" for some functions ?
If so then go to System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab and change the speed to 1.5MBps and Restart iChat.

  • ISight with Core Solo Mini

    Hello,
I wonder if someone knows the answer to this. My mother is in L.A. and I am in New York, and I want to get her a Mac mini Core Solo and an iSight camera so she can talk to me and my family (her grand kids). Would a base model Core Solo be able to handle the iSight camera? We're talking about straightforward one-on-one video conferencing between what would her Mac mini and my iMac. She already has an older monitor, USB keyboard and mouse, so the price point of a Core Solo and iSight camera is just perfect. iSight with iChat are the most processor intensive apps she'll be using on the computer. Has anyone tried it with a Core Solo?
iMac Core Dup 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

As you'll see at the bottom of this page, even a G3 can initiate a 1-to-1 video conference. A Core Solo is much more powerful than any G3, and iChat is Universal (no Rosetta emulation), so a Core Solo is more than what you need (you could even consider a 4-way chat .
If you have Cable or DSL internet then you must have at least 100 Kbps downstream (probably more), but you have to make sure that you have at least 100 Kbps upstream if you want good image & sound.

  • Macbook Air case with magnets. Will it affect hardware or performance of product?

Macbook Air case with magnets. Will it affect hardware or performance of product?

No, the low power N30 or N35 gauss neodymium magnets in the magnetic flap cases will not affect it.
There is no HD, and the SSD are hard (relatively) to corrupt by magnetic field unless high gauss and at close proximity.

  • IPOD CASES WITH MAGNETS

you should be fine, never had problems

    Hi@All!
I bought a Case with Magnets to close for my iPhone 5. Does it have any Impact?
    Tranks for help in advance.

    no not at all
magnets if powerful enough pasive magnets are not powerful enough but strong electromagnets can damage magnetic storage such as a harddisk
but no ios devices use magnetic storage they use flash storage

  • I am trying to isight with someone. Both of us have no problem reaching B

My first problem, with just one person - I am trying to isight with personA. I have no problem reaching personB and personA has no problem reaching personB. But we cannot get on with each other. And I don;t mean we are trying to do this at the saqme time. THis is as a completely separate chat (neither of us is on with personB anymore).
As a secondary question: is there a way to 3-way video conference?

I'm not sure why you are having problems with one person, while the other is not. Is person B in another country?
As far as a 3 way video conference goes, yes you can as long the host and the particpants meet the specfications listed here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/ichat/

  • External Apple isight with a imac G5

Really need help to figure this one out.
I have not used this isight before it has been bought secondhand.
Trying to use an external Apple isight with a imac G5 (without built in isight) running on Leopard OSX 10.5.8.
looked in my Utilities and can't find anything relating to isight.
Done system update and tried to download isight updater 1.0.3 but that does not work for OSX 10.4 or later.
    Many thanks for your time
    Additional Details:
Also when I go into System profiler and look in FireWire it says unknown device.
    and also went into:
    finder/system/library/coreservices/isightupdater
It will ask me to plug in an isight (which I do) to install and still nothing happens.
& also best till last - No green light what so ever
Do you think it maybe broken?
I really hope not as it was sold as fully working

    Welcome to Discussions, jonsonby
Based on the info you posted, if Defcom's good suggestion does not restore proper function, I think the external iSight is defective.
The simplest way to test that for certain is to connect your iSight (use the same cable you use) to another Mac, particularly one that works with a known-good external iSight. If you do not have access to another Mac and/or another external iSight for testing, a local Apple retailer may be able to do the test for you at little or no cost.
