Isight without ichat av

Does anyone know of a way of using isight for video conferencing without using ichat av?
Most of my friends have skype and PCs.
Am I the only one who finds it unfair that isight is intrinsically linked with ichat av-which means that you have to have a .mac account which costs money?Love my mac products but if this is the way they intend to shape the future then.....
Any help would be great!

Does anyone know of a way of using isight for video conferencing without using ichat av?Certainly. Take a look at the other video chat/conferencing apps listed in Some Applications You Can Use With iSight. Several are cross-platform (both Mac and PC versions available).
Skype does not make a video capable version for Mac, at least not yet.
Am I the only one who finds it unfair that isight is intrinsically linked with ichat av-which means that you have to have a .mac account which costs money? Not so, Jon! The ONLY reason you need a paid dot Mac account is to do encrypted chat with other paid dot Mac account users. For EVERY other purpose, either the free Trial dot Mac account or a FREE AIM Name will work as your iChat AV account name.
Once your free Trial dot Mac account period has expired and dot Mac's other useful features have stopped working, your dot Mac name will continue to work as your iChat account name.
There is never any charge for the free AIM name.
For some other ideas about iSight, you might be interested in the info in Using iSight.
If you have specific questions after doing some reading, we will try to help.

Is there a place to test my iSight and iChat with somebody? I bought it to work with my new client and don't want to go through the testing with them.

Does anyone have any ideas that could help us? I am having her download skype to see if thats more successful but this is going to be our primary mode of contact for the next year and I am REALLY worried. We are both using external iSights and we tried audio with and without them plugged in.
Everytime either of us tries anything it gets the the stage where it says "connecting" then gives the error message.
Any help would be really appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Stephen Miller

    Hi,
Hotels are notoriously difficult for iChat because of the way
    1) the ports are not always open
    2) the number of people sharing the connection.
For Mail you probably have POP and SMTP server set for one location and the hotel's ISP is not letting you go to those though their server. Web Mail may be the only way around this.
Ask the hotel if they have the ports open for iChat.
You may not be able to do much about the Bandwidth/user issue.
I take it you have done the Quicktime setting as you have posted before.

  • Want to try and communicate via skype using external isight, but ichat kicks in everytime i plug in. any advice welcome

Hi, i am trying to set up with Skype using an external isight camera, but everytime i plug in Ichat keeps kicking in. Tried it on my os 10.4, 10.5.5 and 10.5.8 .. 10.5.5 Skype seems to not want to work at all, but the other 2, the problem seems to be with ichat bursting in whenever the camera is plugged in. thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi,
In older versions of iChat there is a setting in iChat > Preferences > Video that enables the App to Start when an External camera is plugged in.
This can be unticked to stop this action launching the app.
As for Skype not working in some OS versions you may have to pay attention to the version of Skype that can be used.
I don't use Skype and have not kept abreast of the changes and how they might apply to the different versions of the OS.

  • ISight in iChat

My iSight seems to work fine with my coworkers at Apple, but when I try to connect with someone outside of work, it won't work. It just says the other computer failed to respond or something. Most all of my friends have a Mac computer. Most of them are using a wireless connection. I can't even voice chat with some of them. What's going on here? One of my friends has tried everything he can to see if it's his computer, it can't be mine because it works with other people.

    Hello Lance87
It sounds like your home location needs different communications settings than your work location. Once you know what settings and configurations are required at both places, you can easily save and switch between the two different "Locations" by using your Mac's System Preferences > Network > Location choices bar.
First, save you "Work" location settings. Then create a new "Home" location that will hold the changed settings you need to use iChat at home.
Next, eliminate iSight as a possible contributor to your problem by using these tips in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93240
Now you can turn to the task of finding what settings iChat needs to work at home and how to configure them.
For your iChat AV setup and configuration problems, if you do not get enough help from iChat > Help > iChat Help on your Mac, see Apple's Mac 101 Lesson 12: iChat.
If you are still having problems, search or post in the Leopard iChat and iChat Sharing Forum.
Once you have found and saved the required settings for your home location, you should be able to test with your other friends or the testers listed in Ralph John's iChat Contact Testers list.

  • ISight with iChat kind of working

I have a brand new iSight and a brand new Mac Mini. I'm using a Dell keyboard, mouse, speakers, and monitor. My entire family has Macs with iSights. When I log into iChat, I get a great picture of them, and can hear them fine, and they get a great picture of me, but they hear only garbled junk out of their speakers. I've ensured the iChat and system preferences are set to the iSight microphone, and am getting microphone input levels on the video screen. I've made sure the cables are plugged in properly. I've Re-booted the computer and programs a couple of tiumes after making various changes. I've tried taking the iSight into a local Apple Store and the mic worked fine on garageband and iChat.
What am I doing wrong? I want this to work!

    Hello cleanplateclub,
    And Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I'd like to know if this same condition happens when you contact family members by voice only. Did you try only audio and what was the result?
Also, you should check your sound input level under the Preferences. You may have it set too high and it's overdriving the microphone at the other end. Also ask your other family members to go to preferences and check their Audio out levels to at least half-way.
Lastly, if nothing else has worked, you might try a seperate microphone and not use the iSight mike. My daughter is on a headset (earphones & chin-mike combo) because when the iMac fan reves up, it gets too noisy.
Do post back and let us know if anything changes.
    Respectfully,
    Bill Gallagher

  • Problems with built-in iSight and iChat! Nothing works!!

    Hello,
i have a problem with my iChat, iChat said that no camera is connected, but the built-in iSight works with Photobooth!
I read many Threads here but no solution works,
there is also an entry in the system profiler USB --> built-in iSight
I closed all other Aplications like Photobooth, iMovie and so on,
than i checked the activity monitor.
I changed the settings in iChat (bandwith) and Quicktime (bandwith)
    I did a PRAM reset...nothing changed!
    I did a SMC reset...also nothing changed!
The built-in iSight doesnt works with Skype, too!
    Please help me!

Hey, I hope people aren't getting annoyed by my compulsive posting, but I think this solution needs to be spread, it doesn't get enough publicity:
the issue is that with 10.5.1, a certain quicktime component that acts as a USB controller for the iSight camera is given an expiry time (i.e., the file is given a feature similar to "trial periods"). This file is then deleted, and iSight ceases to function. All that need be done is to replace the component, by downloading it here:
    http://techslaves.org/index.php?PHPSESSID=q8frk8vf81l0f8echu6mj0plk0&action=tpmo d;dl=item16
(disregard the version marking, it works for 10.5.2 in the very least)
Copy it to ~/System/Library/Quicktime, then reboot and it should work.

    Hi
Have you set your Quicktime setting, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed, set to 1.5mbps(dont use automatic)
In ichats prefs click on video and change bandwidth limit to NONE.
    Restart iChat.

  • Using iSight and iChat with a PC user?

I was wondering...I know you need a Mac to use an actual iSight, but if I wanted to video chat with someone who has a PC, is that possible? Can windows users download some sort of iChat AV program?
Or can you only do one-way and two-way video chats with another Apple user?
If anyone has any answers or help, i'd greatly appreciate it! I just made the switch to apple (and i love it), but I still am sort of a greenhorn..
    Thank you!

  • ISight camera/iChat not working HELP!  Also, how can I get PhotoBooth?

    Hi,
A friend and I are tring to use iChatAV but it just does not seem to work.. I can see my picture and the mike on the camera works on my machine but neither of us can see or hear each other.
    Text chat works fine.
We are both running wireless routers but our MAC are hard wired to the machines NIC so wireless is not a factor here. I am using a Linksys WRT54GS... I also have the firewall in OSX turned on. Are there ports I need to open to get this to work? If so how?
Also I bought the iSight camera and just assumed that Photobooth would come with it... It doesn't seem to have been included. My buddy sent me version 1 but I am not sure if it's compatible with the Intel MacPro... how do I get it?
    Any ideas?

    Hi
Goto the linksys setup page and then goto the Adminstration option you should find UPnP which you should turn on.
    Restart ichat.
You have a Macbook Pro which should have a built in iSight and photobooth should be in you application's folder.

  • Way to test iSight without annoying friends?

I'm currently trying to get my iSight camera to work with iChat AV. I think I've found that the problem lies in my Netgear router and have opened some port numbers based on an Apple doc on the subject...
But I'm wary of annoying friends by asking them to let me try to connect (mostly because it keeps failing).
is there a place (or way) where I can just connect to something and be sure it is working before knocking on my friends' doors again?

  • MBP Built-in iSight and External FW iSight over iChat

I was wondering if anyone has heard of a third party program that will take video feeds from both the built in iSight in the MacBook Pro and a FireWire externam iSight. Would be nice since it is easier to maneuver the external one. Plus, two sources would be fun.
    Thanks

  • Built in iSight and iChat used for home monitoring?

Can I set up my iMac to monitor my dog in my apartment while I'm at work? Would I connect with iChat, or would I somehow set it up as a webcam?

    Hi,
    Yes.
The Home computer needs to have Auto Accept set up for Video chats.
The Chax Add-on allows you to select which Buddies that will allow (So you can limit to just your Remote Mac's Screen Name)
For Alternatives see this list, near the bottom (Nanny Cam Section)
That tends to needs a Web site for the home computer to Upload to.
You may have considerations about this if you have limited Upload service in either speed or Amount.
I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Disable iSight without disabling other USB webcams

        Hello,
Hopefully someone can help me.  I need to disable the built-in iSight camera on a Macbook Pro but allow other USB connected webcams to function.  Specifically, I'm using a program called Witness that uses USB webcams as a motion triggered security system.  The problem is that in order for the softwrae to utilize more than one camera, each camera must be on its own high-spoeed bus and cannot share bandwidth with the built-in iSight camera.  I've read the many posts about moving files from the Quicktime folder to disable the iSight, but I've read that this action also disables ANY USB webcams from functiong.  Please help.

Thanks for the reply, but I already contacted the developer.  That's how I found out I couldn't have more than one webcam per high speed bus.  Thanks anyway.
Then perhaps some other software app that would not need iSight to be disabled would better serve your need?
For example, have you considered http://www.bensoftware.com/securityspy/ ?
