ISO Image not booting - GRUB cannot find cdrom

I am using the archlinux-2008.06-core ISO image in my Acer Travelmate 2350.
Instead of showing the menu GRUB drops me to the shell. It seems it cannot load the menu.lst due to not finding the cdrom.
I found a similar bug filed under: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/6292
It was closed by using isolinux instead of grub.
Is this a known problem?

Arch is rolling release.  Once you

you're up to date.  It doesn't matter what ISO you use.  Having said that, you will want to use 2008.03 or newer.  Pacman changed considerably between 2007.08 and 2008.03.
Yes, I know that it is a rolling release. Still, there are some differences in the installations between the ISOs. The one significant difference that I know of is the usage of UUIDs in Overlord. I will try the 2008.3 and just stab fstab to use UUIDs myself. But what I'd like to know is if there are any other new things in Overlord that I should be prepared to repair in the old release.

  • Burn ISO image not boot

Does any one have this experience? I tried to download PowerPC version Linux and FreeBSD ISO image to burn a CD or DVD disc in my MacBook Pro, using Disk Utility. But the disc cannot boot on my old iBook. I tried many disc including DVD-R, CD-R and CD-RW. All are not work. After that, I tried to use Toast to do it. That's OK. I am sure that the download ISO is correct with checksum. But I am not sure it is problem of MacBook Pro or Mac OS X 10.4.5. Any experience.

I have had a similar problem: burned iso images refuse to boot on my old iMac 333MHz machine. Occasionally I have gotten lucky, and my burned disc boots. Usually, it spins up several times and then the computer gives up and boots to the default system.
The problem, I believe, is that my system was put out before cd writers were common on apple hardware and so it doesn't recognise burned discs unless I follow very strict ISO9660 rules: I think Toast is better about following these rules.

If you purchased Lion for your iMac, just log into the Mac App Store from your MacBook using the Apple ID under which you purchased Lion and go to the Purchases page. You will be able to download and install Lion there.
searching the internet i found a link to upgrtade to 10.7
The only place you get get Lion is from the Mac App Store. If you found some other site, that was an illegal copy and almost certainly tied to someone else's Apple ID and hence unusable by you. If the link was just to the Mac App Store, see above.
As to the problem with synchronization to iCloud, that's not a 10.6 question, so I'd suggest you take up that specific issue in either the Lion or iCloud forums, providing full details, and someone there can probably help you sort things out.
    Regards.

  • BIOS-GPT grub cannot find the root device in LVM setup

    Greetings Arch Linux Community,
Recently I started my journey of installing Arch Linux on my VMware Workstation.
I successfully installed the non-LVM instance not long before I noticed the advantages of LVM, then I just started a new Arch Linux setup with LVM.
However, after following the Beginners' Guide and LVM Guide carefully, I ran into a problem on boot that I cannot solve by myself due to my poor knowledge on boot/grub.
    Here is the error message:
ERROR: device '4b28d500-8ed3-4fe5-ad26-97fbb01f979b' not found. Skipping fsck
ERROR: Unable to find root device '4b28d500-8ed3-4fe5-ad26-97fbb01f979b'
The error message itself is pretty clear; saying that the root device specified by my grub.cfg cannot be found and thus cannot be loaded.
However, I'm 100% sure that the device is actually there and just for some reason grub cannot see it.
Below please see the info from lsblk, pvdisplay, vgdisplay, lvdisplay, and some related info from fstab, grub.cfg and mkinitcpio.conf:

Sorry, im newbie ( dont take my advice seriously ), but im very curious about his, because once i couldnt install grub as well so i went for syslinux instead , and i know i will have one more fresh install of arch to do, so im curious
Hi Efka, I used grub-install and specified "/dev/sda" for argument. What I understand is that the sda is the identifier for the hard disk where all the sdaX reside. And if you look into the output of my lsblk, you will see that there is one partition sda1 that has no filetype, label and UUID on display; that is actually the bios boot partition where, as I understand, the grub code embeds itself.
We can have different partition scheme to deploy and having a separate partition for /boot is just my personal preference ans it should work as well.

  • GRUB Cannot Find chainload

I am currently trying to dual boot Windows 8 and Arch Linux. I have Windows 8 installed on my first boot device and Arch installed as per the Beginner's Wiki to my second boot device (both SSD's, sdb and sdc, respectively).
    lsblk:
sda [RAID controlled by dedicated card]
    sda1  128M
    sda2  3.7T
    sdb
    sdb1  300M
    sdb2  100M
    sdb3  128M
    sdb4  232.4G
    sdc
    sdc1  500M
    sdc2  20G /
    sdc3  10G /var
    sdc4  200G /home
    sdc5  235.3G  (spare)
Everything appears to be installed and configured correctly, and I have installed GRUB and gummiboot after GRUB did not work. This was partly do to me having to change some bios settings so that secure boot was disabled, or at least set to "Other OS". At an earlier point I actually wiped my /boot and re-installed Arch (which I believe only replaced missing files) and re-installed grub and re-generated the configuration file.
Now, the GRUB menu shows properly on boot with my Arch and Windows entries and I am able to boot into Arch fine. However, now when I select MS Windows, Grub tells me that it cannot find the chainload command. Is it supposed to be just 'chain', perhaps?
In my /etc/grub.d/40_custom file I added two menu entries, one for Arch Linux and one for MS Windows.
    menuentry "Arch Linux" {
        set root=(hd2,2)
        linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux
        initrd /boot/initrd.img
    # This was added as per the advice at: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions … gpt-system
    menuentry "MS Windows" {
        insmod part_gpt
        insmod search_fs_uuid
        insmod ntfs
        insmod chain
        search --fs-uuid 3A781C97781C544B --set=root --hint-bios=hd1,gpt4 --hint-efi=hd1,gpt4 --hint-baremetal=ahci1,gpt4
        chainload (${root})/Windows/Boot/EFI/bootmgfw.efi
    What could this be?
Thank you for any and all suggestions!!

I'm not opposed to gummiboot, like I said it was my first choice, but as I encountered problems I took the guide advice and tried GRUB. If I can get GRUB to work and it increases my understanding, I would be all for it. I'm definitely familiar with Linux, but I don't have extensive experience with GRUB and EFI.
What is the best way to use gummiboot? Uninstall GRUB or install them side-by-side?

  • Boot camp, "cannot find installation disk."

What do I do? It's a Microsoft download from the MSDN Academic Alliance (Win 7 Prof. 64-bit) and I am getting this error.
I downloaded the Win 7 Prof. from Microsoft's MSDN AA site on a PC.
Opened boot campo and created the partition and the CD is visible in finder (.ISO) but boot camp says "cannot find installation disk."
So I moved the .ISO to my desktop and burned a new CD using the iMac Superdrive and receive the samer error.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Boot Camp will not install from an ISO file. You must have a bootable DVD. Whatever is on your disc image it apparently is not what is on a bootable DVD. You may simply have a .exe installer application that will only work on a Windows machine or on a pre-exisitng Windows system on a Boot Camp partition.

  • Bootable ISO images not visible in PCD when doing Migration Task

We are looking to move from CUCM 8.6 to CUCM 10.0 using Prime Collaboration Deployment. We have the full 10.0 media for CUCM and IMP. We created an ISO image of each and uploaded them to the /fresh_install directory on the PCD server. When creating a migration task in PCD, when we get to the point to select an image and click Browse, nothing is there. We also tried downloading the bootable 10.5 media from PUT. After uploading that media, this was visible, but the 10.0 image we made from the original CD was not.
It appears PCD is doing some sort of validation check against the ISO. What can we do to ensure we create a valid image from the Disc so PCD can see it?

    Hi, Jack.
I have the same question, could you provide more details? Thanks!
Say, in the log I found this: The given directory was located and searched but no valid options or upgrades were available. Note, the system cannot be downgraded so option and upgrade files for previous releases were ignored.
But this does not clarify the question.

  • What is the ISO image that boot camp is asking for when i try to in tall windows 7 on my mac book air?

I am at the point in boot camp where i am creating a bootable USB drive for windows installation, it has a flash drive selected but is asking for an ISO image, i am installing windows 7 and have no idea where the iso image is on the disk.

It is asking for an .iso image of the Windows bootable installer DVD. This would be the .iso file you would get had you purchased Windows and downloaded your purchase. If you have the Windows DVD then you don't need to do what you are doing. Just boot from the DVD to install Windows.
Open Boot Camp Assistant and click on the large button, Print Documentation. Read carefully before proceeding.

  • Intel SSD Firmware Update Tool ISO does not boot

    Hello everyone
Yesterday I tried to install Mavericks on my MacBook Pro 13" 8,1 but I got stuck because I have an Intel SSD inside and it seems that MacOSX 10.8 doesn't have the right driver on board. So I downloaded the Intel SSD Firmware Update Tool 2.0.6 ISO, burned it on a CD with DiscUtility and tried to boot from it.
The problem is that it doesn't boot from the CD. It just ends with the blinking/flashing question mark folder.
Luckily I have a second MacBook Pro 13" 8,1 from work. Just out of couriosity I inserted the disk inside this MacBook and tried to boot from it.
Everything went fine. I saw the Intel Firmware Updater etc.
So now my question: What is going on with my first mac? Why does it NOT boot the CD?
What I need to say at this point: I burned the CD with the MacBook from work. Could this be the reason?
    hope someone can help me
    Best Regards
    krebbl

yes that's right. Unfortunatly I don't have a Windows PC.
But like I said, my second MacBook Pro boots from this CD and shows me the firmware updater. My first MacBook with the Intel SSD does not.
And like in the post here http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57575091-263/intel-x25-ssd-incompatible-wit h-os-x-10.8.3/ it should be no problem.
Are there other ways to boot an ISO file?

  • Bluray ISO image not readable

    Hi all,
If I ask your help today it's because I face a very strange problem with my Bluray ISO disks generated with Adobe Encore CS5.
    I explain the problem :
I have generated my personal video (720x1280) with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5
I have created the menu of my bluray with Adobe Encore CS5
Then, I've generated the ISO with Adobe Encore CS5.
    The ISO image makes 5,80Go
The problem is, when I mount the ISO image of the Bluray disk with Daemon Tool Lite v4.41.3.0173, the disk can't be read:
With Windows Media Player: Windows Media Player can not play the DVD. Due to its special design, it is not supported by the reader.
With VLC v1.1.11: Your media entrance can be opened: VLC can not open 'dvd: / / H: \. "Check messages for more details.
With Cyberlink PowerDVD9: The disc format in the H: drive is not supported
With Cyberlink PowerDVD11: The disc format in the H: drive is not supported
With TotalMedia theater 5: This disc can not be read
I'm using Windows Seven 64 bits
However, if I burn the bluray ISO image on a real bluray disc, I can read the disc on My PC and my PS3 with:
    PowerDVD9
    TotalMedia theater 5
    and on my PlayStation3
The bluray disc burned can't be read with VLC nor Windows Media Payer nor PowerDVD11
Please, can you help me to understand this problem ?
This are my personal life videos, so I would like to solve this problem in order to save these precious moments.
    Regards,
    littlesquall

    Hi all,
    thanks for your answers.
    @John T Smith:
    What's the solution ?
    With http://forums.adobe.com/thread/890691?tstart=0
I haven't tried to generate a folder with Encore but only ISO files.
    I will try this solution.
But if I burn the ISO image (5,80Go) with LG Burning Tool, the image is readable on my PC and PS3.
I have tried to make an ISO file from the BD-RE burned, but the new ISO file makes 23Go I don't know why...
    With http://forums.adobe.com/thread/890691?tstart=0
My Bluray disc generated makes 5,80Go, so it's not a problem with a too big project.
    @Ann Bens:
I've tried with Virtual Clone Drive
Now, I can read the ISO image with Cyberlink PowerDVD9 and TotalMedia theater 5.
The ISO file doesn't work with VLC, PowerDVD11, nor Windows Media Player.
It's better with Virtual Clone Drive but it's not perfect.
I would like to understand, is it a problem concerning the image generated by Encore CS5, or a problem with the soft used to mount the ISO images ?
I save all my personal videos on ISO files, so I would like to understand concretly what the problem is, to be abble to read the ISO in the future...
    Thanks for helping me

Sounds like the PDF's are being created by Wordperfect. You'll want to find a forum for that application.

  • ?Burning ISO images for booting on intel.

I have a couple of iso images I'm trying to burn (DVD) as bootable on my iMac. I did it once before under 10.5.8, but for can't remember what I did. Images are vmware ESXi image and a windows server 2008 image. Just used what is on OS X. Do not have any 3rd party software.
    Thanks for your help

Use Disk Utility. Drag the .iso file to the sidebar, click it once, then press Burn in the toolbar.

  • Burnt ISO image not recognised by Windows Vista

Can somebody please help me with my ISO problem.
I have some windows software stored as an ISO file. I've burnt the file to a DVD using Magic ISO and according to magic ISO the burn completed fine. If I then view the contents of the DVD using OS X then it looks as I'd expect, as a DVD containing windows software including the autorun file.
However whenever I boot up my virtual Windows Vista maching via Parallels desktop and then insert the disk, Vista informs me that the disk is blank and if I view the contents of the DVD using windows explorer then again the disk is Blank.
I've tried burning the ISO image 3 times, twice with Magic ISO and once with some free ISO shareware (I forget the name) each time the burn is successful and OS X recognises it but Windows thinks the DVD is blank. I've also tried the disk on a friends PC running XP and the disk appears blank there also.
This problem is driving me crazy, any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Good morning,
What type of disc are you trying to burn, data or movie?
If you already have an ISO you might consider using Disk Utility to make your DVD, it has rarely failed me! You can do this by going to Macintosh HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility, drag and drop the ISO onto a blank area of the left hand panel and then select the image and 'Burn' from the top left icon.
    Hope this helps! 
