.iso images don't work in OSX; work fine in Windows XP

I can mount .iso files using Toast and they show up OK, but DVD Player gives me the "media type is not supported" message. VLC can't open it either, although it can open the individual .VOB files in the VIDEO_TS folder. I tried burning to a DVD using Toast, but it has the same problems trying to play the DVD. However, when I insert the DVD while running Windows XP via Boot Camp, the DVD plays fine. Is there something in the architecture of OSX that prevents it from properly reading .iso files?

I have no problem mounting and using .iso files. If you save a file as a disk image in Toast, it adds the extension .toast, but it's a raw .iso file. Just change the extension from .toast to .iso and it should be recognizable by other apps. If the files you have aren't readable in OS X but are in Windows, they were probably made in some Windows-centric format rather than true ISO-9660 format.

  • If I make an ISO image on a PC, will it work on my MBP?

    Hello,
I'm trying to install Windows 8 on my new MBP Retina. I bought a copy of Windows 8, which I could only get as a DVD (I spent some time on the phone talking to agents of the Microsoft Store and this was the only option: Windows 8 can only be downloaded if one is updating Windows 7, otherwise a DVD is what you get). Since the MBP does not have a DVD player, it seems that my best option is to make an ISO image of the DVD and then install it with a USB drive through Bootcamp as explained here: http://www.intowindows.com/install-windows-8-on-mac/
My question is: can I make this ISO image on a PC using any appropriate software (like Burnaware's free edition)? Or does the ISO image need to be made on another Mac?
Thank you in advance for any help!

Thank you mende1 and Allan Eckert for your help.
For those of you that might have the same question that I had, the answer is yes, the ISO image of your Windows 8 disc can be produced in a PC--you don't need another Mac to do this. And, the ISO file does not have to be bootable--I made a simple/standard one with Burnaware's free version but there are a number of other sofware out there that could be used for this purpose. Once you make the ISO image, move it to your MBP's desktop and follow the instructions for creating a bootable USB drive through Bootcamp--instructions can be found in Apple's website. You might find a couple of bumps here and there but overall, it's a very easy process and it works well. In my opinion, no disc drive is necessary. Good luck!

  • Isight won't work in OSX, works in boot camp (XP SP3)

    Hi everyone,
Within the last few weeks, my iSight camera stopped working. I went through every troubleshooting step recommended by Apple with no luck. I gave up hope and was ready to take it to the Apple store, but decided to see if it would work in windows... strangely enough it works great, but still won't work in OSX. I'd like to avoid taking it to the store, so any help is greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to Discussions, bluejayDDS
... I'd like to avoid taking it to the store ...
You can the following three things (listed in order of increasing effort on your part) before seeking professional help:
    (1) Apply the latest (10.5.7) Combo Updater using the following procedure:
     • Backup all your important files.
     • Use your Mac's Disk Utility to Repair disk permissions (different from repairing the "disk").
     • Download and apply the Mac OS X 10.5.7 Combo Update.
        http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_7_ComboUpdate
     • Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that completes the install.
(Don't worry about corrections if Disk Utility reports that all repairs have been completed.)
     • Launch only the OS X app you are trying to use with iSight and test to see if iSight works correctly.
Using the above process to apply the Combo Updater sometimes solves problems that occur after using your Mac's Software Update... to update Mac OS.
    (2) If your problem still exists, reinstall OS X using the "Archive and Install" options explained here:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710
Be certain that you have backed up all important files before you reinstall OS X.
    (3) If your problem is not resolved by Archive and Install, you can completely Erase and Install all your Mac's software.
Erasing your iMac's hard disk and reinstalling all software as described in the Erase and Install section of http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545 might correct a problem that remains after an Archive and Install.
Erase and Install is a lot of work, but sometimes it is the only way to get rid of something on the disk that is causing problems.
    (4) If none of that works, see your Apple Service Technician for professional help.

  • External Monitor Stopped Working with OSX but fine with XP

I have a viewsonic Monitor that im connecting to mbp via hdmi-dvi.
It has been working fine for the last 9-10months but has all of a sudden just stopped being detected.
If i Boot up in windows i have no problems as the monitor is detected fine, but with OSX 10.5.8 all i get is the Grey/blue screen change on the mbp when its connected to mbp or when monitor powered on or off.
There is no change to external monitor though.
I have tryed resetting the PRAM
when i go into sys pref/display, it does not detect a second monitor
I have been looking around for a few hrs now with no luck, any help would be great

Have tryed having monitor unpluged for a whole day and that didnt work, cant see any reset button on monitor.
tryed resent PRAM and PMU, tryed booting in safe mode, tryed booting from OSX disc
    but didnt quite understand :
"If you see video when started up from disc, you may have corrupted software. You can use the Archive and Install feature of the Mac OS X installer to reinstall. This kind of installation gives you a fresh version of Mac OS X, but you don't lose any data from the computer as your old information is all archived."
it just booted up and asked if i wanted to install another copy of OSX.
only thing i havnt tryed from the above help is the rm command part of the out of range mac mini, and im a little cautions about that
-i can still use it fine via bootcamp, i just have to go into video settings and tell it to use dual monitors, is there anything like that on osx ? only thing i can find is the display button in sys pref and that only gives me the option to detect displays which it dont do very well.
    Thanks

  • How do you install Windows 7 on Macbook Air with a Windows 7 ISO image?

Macbook Airs have no optical drives, and I can't buy one. I do, however, have the Windows 7 ISO image. And I also have access to a Windows 7 PC. I found an article on CNET on installing from a Flash Drive, but that requires the CD. I also have a hard drive (120GB) and Flash USB (4GB), if they could help. Please help me as many programs I am familiar with are only windows-based. I am tried using open-source software like Wineskin Winery and WineBottler, but to no avail, I always end up confused with them. Please help me.

Crjohnson, I think you can really help me!
Okay, how do you use Wine? I don't want to install lots of software like MacPorts, just want the minimal software. So there are many things like Wine, WineBottler, and Wineskin Winery. What do I use for what? For example, I want to turn a windows game (Age of Empires 2 for example) into a full Mac App. How would I go about this?
I tried researching but it is so in-depth with terminal commands and all(i dont want to risk ruining my computer)
What is crossover? Is it another wine app?
Oh, and I tried Winery Wineskin...why doesn't it work? It keeps installing random things like Gecko, or Mono, but in the end, it doesn't work. Do I need the windows app's executable, or the window's apps's installation executable??
What are engines, and how many do I need to create? I think the best thing for me is to learn wine, because installing windows with bootcamp isn't worth the effort, I think, with me having only a few apps i need to run.
As for learning mac apps only, well, Windows apps dominate the market with most of applications being made for windows, especially games, with 90% market. So for some apps, there just isn't a mac version available, or if there is, it's costly. (Which you already know I can't buy things)
You probably cannot afford to buy Crossover either.  It is designed for user friendliness though, but of course Wine cannot run everything.
Yes you have to learn some things to use Wineskin.  Normally on Gecko and Mono prompt, just cancel them.  Gecko is needed if you have a program using mshtml (its basically a replacement for Internet Explorer for programs that use parts of it).  Mono is a replacement for .NET if your program requires that.  You do not want to install them if you don't need them as they will just waste space.  You can always refresh the wrapper later on and get the same prompts if you find out you need them later.
You can copy the full installed version of a game inside the Wineskin wrapper and try to set it up that way, but its usually easier to just run the installer and install it inside the wrapper just like you'd install it in Windows.
An Engine is something you download... its basically a specific Wine build made for a Wineskin wrapper.
If you do not want to learn Wineskin enough to get in and port your programs yourself, you can often find other people who have done so (at least with games).
Check out sites like PaulTheTall.com who has tons of Wineskin wrappers already made and ready to go for many games... you just download the wrapper, install the game you want in it using the normal Installer, then its ready to go.  Many you'll need to manually update yourself to Wineskin 2.5.8 though since all the older versions broke ok the OS X 10.8.2 and 10.7.5 update, and Paul hasn't gotten to all of them yet since he has hundreds (including AoE 2 i think).
There is also Portingteam.com which has tons of pre-made wrappers for games (Including Cider hacks from official games).
If your talking about non-Game apps though, you can normally find an alternative... many of which are free.

  • Creating ISO Image

I have two Macs, an older 17" MB Pro with a superdrive and a new 2013 27" iMac without a superdrive. I have a legal copy of Windows 7 64 bit that I need to use to make an ISO image on a USB stick so I can install Windows 7 on bootcamp on the new iMac. How do I create the ISO image on the USB stick? This needs to be done within Mavericks if possible.

  • How does one Create Bootable DVD from downloaded iso image in Windows?

I have a completely empty system I want to load Solaris Express on. I have access to web on a Windows XP machine and have downloaded the Solaris iso image. Using WindowsXP facilities simply copies the iso image as an intact iso image file and resulting disc is not bootable. Windows knowledge base very conveniently says that what happened to me is what happens. No obvious referral to how to do it....
    A) So for a non-Windows savy person who does not want to become Windows savy (That is why I downloaded Solaris!) Where is a set of instructions on how to (inside Windows XP) "extract" an iso image to a CD / DVD disk so it will be bootable?
    B) It sure would be nice if Solaris were able to be loaded onto a USB Flash drive and booted at will from any USB computer. Just plug it in and boot. Has this been done?
    C) Getting a physical disk by snail mail from Sun is very slow for me.... (3 weeks and still watching the mail box...)

You probably copied the .iso file as one single very large file onto media. Instead, you can use a utility such as Roxio DVD Creator or Nero (or freeware like cdrecord) , and select the option to burn an image that already exists. No special boot options are needed, because the ISO image already contains the boot information needed.
    B) It sure would be nice if Solaris were able to be loaded onto a USB Flash drive and booted at will from any USB computer. Just plug > it in and boot. Has this been done? With the Newboot project introduced into Solaris Express, I believe it is now possible. I'm not a USB expert, though, so cannot say for sure.

No answer because likely nobody can understand what you are asking.
Also, nobody is going to respond to your post within two minutes of posting. I don't think you understand how this support forum works.
Also, Apple isn't here. It's just us users. If you want to talk to Apple, contact them through AppleCare.
Best I can understand is you want to download a 10.5.8 installer.
If that is correct, there isn't one.
If your original install disks are missing or damaged, you can contact Apple and request they send you replacement disks. Again, asking here won't get you anything.
If you want, you can likely upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6) by purchasing the install DVD from the Apple Store: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

  • Will an epson photo 2400 scanner work with OSX 10.7?

Will an epson photo 2400 scanner work with OSX 10.7?
If so where do I get the drivers/software to run it?
I have used it with aquire, but only in flat bed scanning.
I am not able to use the film/slide mode anymore because the software that came with it is for 32 bit macine code.
    Any ideas?

I realize this isn't a direct answer to your question, but I have an Epson Perfection 1670 flatbed scanner.  I plugged it into a USB port after installing Lion, and it works fine with both the Image Capture and Preview applications.  ("FIne", for me - I don't have a need for slide/transparancy scanning.  Image Capture recognizes the scanner can do it, giving two modes for transparancy scanning, but in a quick and dirty test a minute ago it didn't seem to work.  Since I don't need the capability, I'm not going to struggle with it to see what I've done wrong.)
    Good luck

  • S-Video adapter and analog TV works with OSX 10.5 but not Boot Camp 2.1(XP)

I bought a mini-DVI to S-video or composite adapter to use with an older analog TV. Works great with OSX 10.5 no problems. However, I currently have Windows XP running with Boot Camp 2.1 and it wont work with the TV. If I ever get an image it's three black and white fuzzy and distorted iterations of the monitor.
Since it works with OSX but not with XP i'm thinking its some sort of boot camp issue and not a problem with the hardware or adapter. Therefore, it should be solvable, right? Does anybody know how to fix this? Will upgrading to snow leopard and boot camp 3.1 solve it?

Perform a custom install from the Mac OS X 10.5 disks and install only that component if possible; if not, use Pacifist to install it. In either case, rerun the combo updater for your Mac OS X version afterwards.

  • Screensaver is not working in OSX Yosemite

    Hi,
My screensaver is not working in OSX Yosemite on my macbook pro late 2008
Can't solve it by my self..

I had noticed I was having this issue too, and my screensaver never kicking in, and just going to sleep with it never kicking in.
I had gone in and checked to see if any of the settings had got changed or deleted in the system upgrade, but they were all still set at what I had them at prior... so, did as some attempted above also, and adjusted the times for it to kick in, and still nothing.  Worked when I would hit 'Preview', but still not kick in at the interval time.
What I just did to get it to work, was just to simply go into System Preferences>Desktop & Screensaver, and just reselected the folder of images that I want to be used, in my case, a folder of images in my iPhoto.  And it now works.
Apparently, it wasn't working, because, even though it was still selected to use that folder in iPhoto, something must have changed in the upgrades, which might of had something to to with the iPhoto update too, where it had to update my iPhoto library upon relaunch... and my screensaver settings were set to access that older directed to folder within Library, that was updated in the new release... and so, just repointing it to that folder now in iPhoto, got it to work.
At least, that is my figurin', and I'm stickin' to it!

How do I move Elements 8 projects (slide shows) from a Windows XP computer to new Windows 7 computer that also has Elements 8 on it so that the slides shows will work (Elements 8 works well on the Windows 7 computer & I have done several new slide show projects on it)?    I tried backup & restore without success.  I have also found the .psess files and copied them to the catalog in the new computer but when the sides shows are opened none of the images or music is there.  Only the text that I entered shows.  I have even tried to replicate the file paths from the XP computer to the new computer to see if that will help.

UPDATE:  By a stroke of luck I happened to find a catalog link (a PSE8D file) in the 'My Catalog' file where the imported data was stored.  When I clicked on it to investigate what is was 'magically' all of my transferred projects appeared in Organizer.  Upon further investigation I found that the projects transferred from my XP computer were stored in a hidden catalog that had to be accessed through the Custom Location option in Catalog Manager (accessed by clicking File then Catalog then Custom Location).  No Windows or Elements search revealed this fact.  I am appreciative that I just got lucky.  The Adode/Photoshop company was absolutely of no help.  If fact to me their structure is designed to avoid contact with their customers unless you're buying a new product.  Their products have many good features (even though user unfriendly) and it's a shame they don't value their customers more once the sale is completed.
Bottom line:  All of the projects (sideshows) have been recovered and work in my new Windows 7 computer.  I hope my experience helps others.

  • Epson scanner 2450 won't work in OSX 1.5.2

I am trying to install my epson perfection 2450 scanner on my Mac Pro with OSX 1.5.2 but it won't work.
I was able to install the driver a couple of times but I couldn't get the scanner to show up in the import options in Photoshop as it does in Windows. It worked from its own scan window OK.
I tried to uninstall it and reinstall it a few times to see if it worked but now it doesn't even want to load the basic scan interface.
Also, the Smart panel app that is supposed to enable scanning from within programs like Photoshop or Word doesn't seem to exist.
The drivers at Epson UK are from 2004 and those on the US website are from 2006. The documentation says that it should work in OSX.
Can anyone please advise on what I need to do or if this scanner is able to scan in OSX 1.5.2?
It's a good scanner and I can't afford to go out and buy another one just to for OSX.
    Thanks for any advice.

Hi. I had the same problem with the Epson 2450 using Photoshop CS3. I found this solution. Open Image Capture app and go to the preferences box. Tick the box for Image Capture to open up when scanner is connected. Turn on scanner and it should recognise scanner and open window box. From there you can set your preference and for it to open with Photoshop after scanning. I hope this helps as it has for me.

  • Image compression does not seems to work

    Hi all,
We are using a Remote Desktop Server (2012 R2) with Word 2010 to make some image-documents. For some reason the Image Size and Quality settings have no effect on the saved document. With the option "Do not compress images in file" checked or not
checked, or changing the default output setting to 220, 150 or 96 ppi, the document is always the same (uncompressed) size.
After each change the pictures are removed and re-added.
I tried this on two other RDS Servers (2012 R2 64bit) and on my Client machine (Windows 8.1 64bit), same result.
Removed Word 2010 and installed Office Professional Plus 2010, same result.
Updated Word / Office 2010 with the latest updateds, same result.
The strange thing is... on my home-pc (Windows 7 32bit) and Office Professional Plus 2010, it does work.
On every system the same document and same pictures are used. Images are JPEG an about 4MB each.
On the 64bit systems the file with 2 pictures is about 7MB and on the 32bit system 1MB.
    Can anyone confirm this issue?
Can this have something to do with the 32/64bit machines and the 32bits office?
(I did not try 64 bit office and do not have another 32bit system)

We did some more testing with the following results:
Word 32bit on Server 2012 R2 64bit: Compression not working
Word 32bit on Windows 8 64bit: Compression not working
Word 32bit on Windows 7 32bit: Compession is working !!
Word 64bit on Windows 8 64bit: Compression not working
Word 32bit on Server 2008 64bit: Compression is working !!
All tests are done with Word 2010, inserted the same two pictures in the same document and with the same settings :
On systems where it does work, with 220ppi compression, the filesize is 1.100KB. With compression OFF, the filesize is 7.152KB.
On systems where is does not word, the filesize is always 7.152KB for this document. No mather what PPI setting and "Do not compress image file" deselected.
As mentioned earlier, after each change in settings we removed and re-added the pictures.
Could this be a Windows 8 / Server 2012 problem?
