Issue: bootcamp gaming fan really loud

Computer: MacBook Pro Retina Display 15" (2013)
When I play game under BootCamp Window 7, my fan becomes very loud.
Is there any way that I could reduce the fan's sound?
Will it help if I have an external fan (regular home standing fan or usb fan) that cooling the computer?

leonhart1981,
if your fan is becoming very loud, it’s because it’s doing its job — your Windows 7 game is creating heat inside of your MacBook Pro, and your fan is doing what it’s supposed to do to prevent your MacBook Pro’s components from baking. An external fan is not likely to significantly reduce the noise of your internal fan, unless you’re saying that you prefer the sound of your external fan to the sound of your MacBook Pro’s fan — the need is to get the heat outside of your MacBook Pro’s case, and your MacBook Pro’s fan is a far more efficient tool for that job than an external fan would be.

  • Fan really loud after coming in from the cold

I came home from school today and left my backpack in my car which had my MBA in it to talk to my neighbour for a bit. It's approximately -22 Celsius where I live right now. When I came inside, I woke up it up, as it was previously sleeping, and it's fan (or at least that's what I think it is) was really loud. Ever since I got it, I haven't heard the fan once, and I was horrified when I heard it, so I quickly turned it off. I later found out that I have to let it warm up to room temperature before turning it on. It's been about 2 hours now and I just tried to turn it on again, and I'm still hearing the fan. What should I do? I'm worried because I don't want to harm my MBA, but I also need to use it to work.

Ooh, you should never do that, you need to let your macbook warm up to room temp. before turning it on.
you risk condensation forming inside a rapid warming macbook as the fan shuttles WARM air in the room over the COLD logic board
its not the fan you should worry about, its doing that and causing condensation and corrosion to form from quick temp. fluctuations inside the cold macbook.
DONT do that again, it leads to corrosion.
    FAN NOISE:
A: you notice it more in a quiet room (the typical case) which is normal, all is AOK
B: fuzz and dust has caked onto the blades causing the fan hub to get off balance and make a buzzing sound.
C: fan rotor is going bad and making a whirring or buzz noise (rare).
D: Fan is spinning up due to excess heat from gaming, heavy graphics (typical, all is OK)
    A and D are normal
    B and C are not.

  • MacBook air running slow and fan really loud how to fix?

MacBook Air running slow and fan is really loud and using lots of battery.  How to fix?

Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity

  • Fan really loud

My son's imac has been shutting down on its own and not wanting to start up. Then it'll start up by itself and the fan is really loud. I followed the steps to reset the SMU but it didn't help. (turned off computer, removed all cables, including power cord.... waited 10 seconds, held in power button and put in power cord at the same time) I don't have the extra warranty protection right now, because the lack of funds won't allow right now. I'm planning on purchasing it in a couple weeks. Anybody got any suggestions? HELP!

Welcome to Discussions - Apple Care has to be bought within one year of the original date of purchase, so you had better do it before then. If you have a G5 iMac, it sounds as if your power supply unit is faulty, see if you qualify for one of Apple's Repair extension programs.

  • HP DV7-7010US FAN REALLY LOUD AND BATTERY NOT DETECTED..

Hi everyone, I have an HP-DV7 7010US, I got the laptop just about a year ago and recently the fan will spin really loud, like a roaring sound will come out and it will make it really uncomfortable to even use the laptop. I called the HP support and my warranty just ended a couple weeks ago, so I was wondering if anyone knew any solution or had any guides on how to DISASSEMBLE this laptop so I can get a good look for myself. I have tried to look allover the internet and there are no guides or videos on disassembling this exact model... someone make one please! I cannot get 1 last screw out and not sure on how to pop out the keyboard like the previous DV7 models.

Well, the keyboard DOES come off before the top cover because there is one screw hiding under there that connects the top to the base !  (Guess which screw is NOT going to be re-installed !)
Step 4 of the keyboard removal procedure say "Press on the back of the keyboard through the opening in the optical drive bay until the keyboard disengages from the computer."  Well that opening is covered by the numeric keypad !  Use a small, very thin bladed screwdriver to pry up the edge of the keyboard.  It will pop out.
The base part number has been superseded.  From the HP Partsurfer Part 681970-001 is no longer supplied. Please order the replacement, 707999-001.   I do not know what differences, if any. there are between the 2.

  • Fan really loud gaming

when playing games (any really) on macbook pro 13' early 2011, my fan kicks in and starts going crazy. even during relatively easy games such as minecraft. i was just wondering if this is normal? oh and my hinge is really loose, if i touch it (lightly) it will almost crackle and pop, just wondering if i could fix this?
    cheers in advance (hopefully) :]

Fan is most likely normal, happens to me too.
You might want to have the hinge checked at an Apple Store or Authorized Service Provider.

  • CPU Fans Really Loud

I have a Unibody Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz w/ 2 GB ram. When I watch streaming video using flash (either through a browser or with adobe air program) my CPUs get slammed and the temp shoots up on the CPUs to over 80 degrees C. Both fans rev up and usually run at about 4000 rpm or higher. They are quite loud and since I am a law student trying to watch video in class this is severly annoying.
Have other people experienced this? I had a Powerbook G4 that was never this loud. the computer is obviously still under warranty, should I take it in?

It sounds as if your fans are reacting exactly as they should to cool your computer. If the sound seems excessively loud, it wouldn't hurt to take it in for evaluation. A chill mat might also help.
    Good luck!

  • Is the Time Capsule suppose to sound like a whirring fan - really loud all the time?

My newly purchased time capsule is sounds like a loud fan!  Is that normal?

No. It should be nearly whisper quiet when operating. It may be that you have a defective unit and I would recommend returning it for a replacement.

  • 2010 Mac Pro fan gets really loud after 10.8.4 update

    Hey all,
I've been having some issues with my fan since upgrading to 10.8.4, it's been incredibly loud compared to what it use to be. I typically run very graphic intensive programs and heavy video use but even simple tasks like browsing the apple site with nothing else running the fan slowly ramps up it a distracting volume. You can even hear it in the next room.
I've reset the ram, done a clean instal, blasted out any possible dust, it's in a well ventilated area, even run system hardware tests Nd everything passes I really don't know what else to try? I've searched lots on the Internet and I can't seem to find a solution nor do some others. Some say it will be a fix in a later update? Is this a known issue that needs to be fixed? I miss the snow leopard days :(
    Everything was wonderful until 10.8.4...
Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated I love my macs but can't work with really noisy machines.
    Thanks y'all!
    Machine specs -
    10.8.4 Mac OSX
    2x 2.66 6 core intel Xeon
    20Gb 1066mhz DDR3
    Nvidia quadro 4000
    4 hard drives
    1 super drive
    Running dual monitors
20" apple cinema and 23 LG

I know there aren't 'as many' but it is better now than it use to and you don't need $2000 Quadro 5000 or something, a $600 GTX 680 or somethjng from EVGA will do
Don't know what but MacRumors did a good job on one thread detailing possible GPU AMD FirePro possibilities. Yes it is huge change.
People have always said that about PCs. I have a few. Not for gaming but that is the only way if you want like a small percentage of users, to spend on GTX 690 x 3 for $$$ (big bucks just for gaming).
I can't recall a Mac Pro 5,1 2010 with 2.66GHz (sounds like a 2009) and 12-cores. 2,26 GHZ yes but that is just, does not make sense to give up MHz for more cores. The 12-core 3.34GHZ custom build, yes, but again that was never an Apple BTO choice either.
Apple has always disappointed geekheads you might say.

  • Imac freezes on startup grey screen and really loud fans

My Imac G5 non intel 20" freezes on startup grey screen and really loud fans start and it won't boot. just have the logo on the grey screen.
I've tried resetting Pram - think that was the right thing to do?
I've tried disk utility, but it won't settle for me to choose the hard drive, it kind of sticks and keeps rotating the wheel.
    any ideas anyone?
    please help.

Lots of things you can try - first, try resetting the SMU. Next, boot from your install disc, go to Disk Utility and try to verify and repair your hard drive. If that doesn't work, try running the Apple Hardware Test on one of your install discs.
Also, depending on which model you have, you may be eligible for Apple's power supply or video and power issues.
    Please post back with results,
    Miriam

  • Does anybody have problems with the Macbook Pro Retina 15' fans being really loud even when playing flash games like candy crush or tetris?

    Hey guys,
So after a few months of using the MBP 15' Retina, I've discovered that the fans are incredibly loud even when playing flash games like candy crush or tetris.. are any of you guys having the same problem? Like all of a sudden from be quiet to unbelievably loud just as the games load. So yeah, hopefully someone has the same problem as I am having.
What I was thinking was that the MBP Retina 15' is such a beefed up laptop, it shouldn't require that much CPU to run flash games that are not even THAT graphically intensive to which making the fans that loud..
    Thanks!

Believe it or not, Flash REALLY isn't the issue.
It's hardware makers making devices with less processor performance and requiring software makers to fit into a certain requirements of such. Namely iPhone, iPods and iPads.
Flash is designed to give a lot of features and work across many operating systems, browsers and platforms as a write once solution.
Flash has a certain level of processor performance requirement, which hardware makers like Apple want to build less powerful machines using less expensive processors.
Apple has removed Coverflow 3D effects from iTunes and discontinued the 17" MacBook Pro, leaving only the 15" as having a more powerful 3D capable graphics capability.
So Apple is obviously on a anti-heat/performance quest as they further thin up their hardware, trying to kill Flash by punishing Mac users who want to run it.
Flash runs without a fan sound on my older Mac with dedicated GPU and older OS X verison, no sweat.
Head to your System Preferences > Energy Saver and if you have it, uncheck Automatic Graphics switching, this will use the dedicated GPU and shorted battery life, but if your on power should reduce the heat and fan noise.
Another option is to use SMC fan control and set the fan default speed slightly faster, this will keep the machine slightly cooler and not trigger the higher fan speed as often.
If your running 10.8, you will need to System Preferences > Security > downloads to "Anywhere"
SMC FanControl is over at MacUpdate.com.

  • Fan noise - really loud - HELP

    Hi, everyone!
I have a MacBook Pro 13'' from mid 2010, with OS X Maverick installed.
Recently, my mac started to make an annoying noise from the fan...
Check the noise in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWDuecRdn7I
I've tried to clean the fan, but i don't have the Torx Screwdriver to open it completly...
But I really don't know if this noise comes from the fan because it's dirty or because something else...
I really like to solve this problem, cause sometimes it gets really loud, and i can't even concentrate on my work...
My computer is really nice, 0 problems untill this time...
    Best regards,
    Pedro Couto

Yes, your fan assy. is about to fail to be certian
    Dust bunnies
Your Macbook’s cooling system, including fan and rear vents pull cool air in from the back and (in the case of the Macbook pro) also from the left ports bringing this air around the processor, GPU, and heat sync and blow it out the back, as such your Macbook acts like a little vacuum cleaner of the air around you. If you use your notebook in a dusty area or around a lot of pet fur, this can quickly, even under seemingly ideal clean rooms, accumulate inside your notebook especially on the fan blades reducing its capacity for cooling and in a worse case scenario seize your fan due to caked on dust on the fan blades. Avoid very dusty areas or places where, over the long term you know fuzz, fur, or even smoke can enter into your Macbook.
Is it making a buzzing or scraping noise?
If you only hear it in a quiet room, that is normal.
    noisy fan reasons:
A: you notice it more in a quiet room (the typical case) which is normal, all is AOK
B: fuzz and dust has caked onto the blades causing the fan hub to get off balance and make a buzzing sound.
C: fan rotor is going bad and making a whirring or buzz noise (rare).
D: Fan is spinning up due to excess heat from gaming, heavy graphics (typical, all is OK)
    A and D are normal
    B and C are not.
Do you use it in a dusty area or where there is a lot of pet fuzz?   Laptop fans act like little vacuum cleaners and take in dust etc. from the ambient air around them.
If B and C continue for a long time (B is just a cleaning), they eventually cause the fan to either seize and/or die.
Contact Apple for a new fan assy.

  • My MacBook Pro 13 has a really loud fan

When I play games on my macbook pro 13 the fan kicks in and it is a really loud one. my cousin has the exact same macbook pro same Early 2011, but his is not as loud as mine. I also like to talk to my firends on skype to so the intergrated mic picks up the fan noise I dont know what to do. Please help.

The 13" is not a 3D gaming machine, it's all integrated graphics and the CPU isn't designed for it.
It only scores 11 on Cinebench.
For that you need a 15" or larger with it's own discrete graphics card. Scores 30-45 depending which card it has.
Many Mac users often buy without realizing what they bought can't do what they expected, Apple really doesn't assist, just stands there and takes your money. You really need to do your comptuer homework.

    http://www.cbscores.com/index.php?sort=ogl&order=desc
All we can suggest is don't 3D game, don't block the air ports, use on a level hard surface so air gets underneath and through the machine.
Use it in a cool room.
You can do a SMC reset if the fans are on all the time with no heavy activity.

  • My fan is running really loud, low cpu (i think?)

My fan has been running really loudly for a day now. I have tried turning it off and on again, putting it to sleep, cleaning out the dust.
On my activity monitor "opendirectoryd" is running at 94.5 percent and I have no idea what that is and if it is causing the problem?
I have looked at answers on other forums for the same thing but none of the remedies have seemed to work. Can any one help please?

    Hi..
Try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
As a rule it is not a good idea to run Terminal commands unless you have a better understanding of what the results should be.

  • The fan gets really loud sometimes

I just bought my Mac a couple weeks ago, not more than a month ago, and I haven't really downloaded a lot onto my computer. But sometimes the fan comes on really loudly, like it's having a hard time cooling the computer. Granted this happens usually when I'm on a site or using a program that is graphic intensive, but it only started doing this sometime this week. Could there be something wrong with the computer?

Your MacBook is behaving as it should. The fan will come on when the CPU is working overtime.
You can run Activity Monitor in the background and see what processes are consuming CPU cycles when the fans come on.
It is Abode Flash more often than not on a website that gets the CPU working hard and the fans going.
