Issue Migrating iTunes Library to NAS - ... you don't have permission...

I have set up a Buffalo Linkstation Duo Nas with 2TB of usable space (4TB Raid 1) on my home network and it seems to be working fine.
I created a Share folder for Video (which I don't use with iTunes) and another for iTunes Media.
The 600GB of Video that I had on my Mac Pro transferred over just fine, but I am having trouble migrating my iTunes Media over.
According to some posts I've read, the best way to do so is to point iTunes to the new disk in Preferences, then and then do a:
File>Library>Organize Library>tick Consolidate Files>OK
This was going smoothly until about a half hour (5GB) into the transfer (of ~200GB) and I got an error dialog that says:
"Copying files failed, because you don't have permission to change your iTunes Media Folder or a folder within it."
(the comma is iTunes' typo, not mine)
It doesn't say whether the issue is with the new iTunes Media Folder or the original one.
After using Get Info to check the permissions on the iTunes Media Folder and all the folders immediately inside of it, they all seemed to be read/writable by me.
I ran a Permissions Repair on my main HD with the original iTunes library, but that didn't help.
I can manually copy files to the NAS drive and the shared folder to which I'm attempting place the new iTunes Media Library. So I don't think it is an issue with the NAS.
... and yes, I've tried switching everything off and on.
Would anyone like to take a guess as to what the issue with the permission would be?
-or-
Can I just manually copy everything over to the NAS and then redirect iTunes to the new folder?
Judging by what did transfer over to the NAS, iTunes seems to be reorganizing a few of the folders and things so it would be nice to let iTunes do the migrating... but... whatever works is fine.

Solved independently.
I had some videos that were not being managed by iTunes on an external drive which had screwy permissions.... so it wasn't the iTunes Media Folder that was the permission issue, but the oddball folder on a faulty drive.
I removed the offending videos from iTunes and tried again. The entire library consolidated nicely onto the NAS drive (took 18 hrs. though)
Now I just need to figure out the best way to share that library with all the computers on the network. From what I've been reading, it is not as simple as just pointing all the Macs' iTunes to the iTunes Folder on the NAS drive - There are artwork issues and problems with using the same Library simultaneously between Macs.
.... But that's for another discussion.

  • External Hard Drive "You don't have permission" intermittent issue

    Hi -
We have three iMacs that are networked using Airport Extreme.  Computer 'A' has an external USB hard drive plugged in to it.  I have "file sharing" turned on, and using "get info", I have shared the external hard drive with Computer 'B' and Computer 'C'.  Most of the time, opening or saving files to the shared hard drive works without any problems, but occasionally (perhaps twice a day) any of the three computers will display an error message that says "You don't have permission" to save, or open or do anything with a file.  It can happen on any of the three computers at any time with any file.
In the "Sharing and Permissions" portion of a "get info" window for the shared hard drive, it correctly says "dougshaffer (Me)" and "everyone" have "Read & Write" privileges.  To fix the problem, I have to unlock the drive, click the gear wheel and choose 'Apple to enclosed items...".  This solves the problem temporarily but it will certainly happen again later.
Also, every time I have to go through this process, I have to re-check the "Ignore ownership on this volume" check box.  It will not stay checked even with the lock ON.
I have searched for this issue but can't seem to find a solution.  FYI, this has happened with two different hard drives.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks -
    Doug

I see that a few people have viewed this question, but there are no responses yet.
    Any thoughts, anyone?

  • HT201250 I need to restore my iPhoto library.  But, when I select an earlier iPhoto library from TimeMachine and click on restore, I get a message "You don't have permission to access iPhoto library." I am the only administrator this Mac Mini has ever had

I may have accidentally trashed my iPhoto library (fomr the pictures folder).  No problem, I thought1. I;ll jsut resore it using Time Machine, but I have tried it several times and get the message "You don't have permission to accesss the iPhoto library". How can this be?  Any help will be appreciated.

  • The folder "iPhoto Library backup 1/2007" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents.

When I try to view my iPhoto backup I get the error: "The folder “iPhoto Library backup 1/2007” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."
I tried opening the Get Info box and changing my access from no access to read only, authenticated with current and old admin passwords but access does not change.
    Help!

In that case reset the ownership and permissions on the iPhoto Library as follows:
    1 - download and launch BatChmod .
2 - drag the iPhoto Library into the BatChmod window.
3 - set the ownership and privileges settings to that shown in this screenshot:
4 - launch iPhoto and see if that helped.

I Can't open the iPhoto library. It says that the iPhoto library is locked, on a locked disk or you don't have permission to make changes on it. Can anybody help me?

Where is your iPhoto Library located?
    Apply the fix below:
    Fix #1
Try to launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.

  • None of the selected updates could be installed.  You don't have permission

I am trying to update my MacMini from 10.7.3 to 10.7.4 and I am not able to.  The user account I am trying to do it from is an admin account.  I currently have 4 other updates and I am not able to install any of them and they are listed below.
    Airport utility 6.1
Digitial Camera Raw Compatability update 3.13
    iTunes 10.6.3
    Java for OS X 2012-004 1.0
Here is a copy and paste from my Console install.log only trying to install the Airport Utility and Digital Camera Raw updates.  All others were doing the same as these.

  • How to resolve "You don't have permission to use the application" errors?

We've been struggling with managed preferences, specifically applications, for a few users. They have mobile home folders which live on a Mac OS X 10.6.x Snow Leopard Server AFP server, preferences which are managed (by group) on a Mac OS X 10.6.5 Snow Leopard Server Open Directory Master, and the clients are running Mac OS X 10.6.4 Snow Leopard (bound to the Open Directory Master). There are also two Mac OS X 10.6.4 Snow Leopard Server Open Directory Replicas. We always manage applications and DO NOT sign the apps when adding them in Workgroup Manager.
Essentially, key applications are unable to run due to the "You don't have permission to use the application" errors, even though they're explicitly whitelisted. (See some prior investigation over on Serverfault.) After seeing that the Mac OS X 10.6.5 Server update included the following fixes, we upgraded our Open Directory Master to 10.6.5:
    * Addresses an issue that could prevent managed preferences from being applied when a user logs in on a workstation that has been idle.
    * Fixes an issue that could prevent administrators from bypassing client management settings on a workstation.
This seemed to improve the situation slightly, our most important application now seems to be allowed. Occasionally, it'll give the same error, but a simple log out & back in allows it again. We have not upgraded the client workstations with the Mac OS X 10.6.5 update as it doesn't note any related fixes and we haven't fully qualified it for mass deployment.
We now have two applications that live in ~/Applications which are explicitly whitelisted (again, NOT signed), which fail with the same error, but logging out & back in does not resolve it. `sudo mcxrefresh -n 'user'` doesn't resolve the issue. In fact, `sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/ManagedClient.app/Contents/MacOS/ManagedClient -f -u `id -u 'username'`` fails with the following error:
ManagedClient- bad parameter to -u option: use format '-u 501'
Today I was able to catch the following in /var/log/system.log while attempting to run one said applications:
Dec 22 17:36:24 hostname parentalcontrolsd[43221]: -[ActivityTracker checkApp:csFlags:] [954:user] -- * Incoming app appears to be masquerading as white listed app and failed signature validation: /Users/user/Applications/FileMaker Pro 5.5/FileMaker Pro.app/Contents/MacOS/FileMaker Pro. Note: This may be a valid app of a different version than what was whitelisted (on a different volume?)
    Dec 22 17:36:24 hostname [0x0-0xa42a42].com.filemaker.filemakerpro[43304]: launch of /Users/user/Applications/FileMaker Pro 5.5/FileMaker Pro.app/Contents/MacOS/FileMaker Pro was blocked
    Dec 22 17:36:24 hostname com.apple.launchd.peruser.1340[6375] ([0x0-0xa42a42].com.filemaker.filemakerpro[43304]): Exited with exit code: 255
    Dec 22 17:36:24 hostname parentalcontrolsd[43221]: -[ActivityTracker(Private) _removeAppFromWhiteList:] [1362:user] -- * Couldn't find local user record
So, even though the apps are listed in Workgroup Manager and are unsigned, and also appear in '/Library/Managed Preferences/user/com.apple.applicationaccess.new.plist', it appears that the client somehow thinks they don't match what's in the whitelist even thought WE DON'T SIGN THEM WHEN WE ADD THEM!
What might be causing this? Any further troubleshooting tips would be GREATLY appreciated!

According to the [Code Signing Guide|http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Security/Conceptual /CodeSigningGuide/Procedures/Procedures.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40005929-CH4- SW2], it appears that there is no way to remove signing (emphasis mine):
"You can take a partial-update approach to revising your code on the user’s system. To do so, sign the new version as usual, then calculate the differences between the new and the old signed versions, and transmit the differences. Because the differences include the new signature data, the result of installing the changes on the end-user's system will be the newly signed version. You cannot patch a signed application in the field. If you do so, the system will notice that the application has changed and will invalidate the signature, +and there is no way to re-validate or resign the application in the field.+"
Upon further investigation, the version of FileMaker 5.5 in question appears to be signed even after a fresh install from original install media. I wouldn't have thought Code Signing was around back then (2001). And the code signing appears to match between the fresh install (to a new location) and the original install. I'll attempt to sign it in WGM and install the same, signed copy everywhere.
Also, I looked at one of our other working primary applications (4D.app) and it is unsigned, but appears in the Firewall as "Allow incoming connections", so I don't believe that the Application Firewall is necessarily signing apps automatically (but I certainly won't be ruling it out).
I haven't checked yet, but the other application that's failing is "Parallels Desktop 6", which I'd bet is signed. I wonder if the "Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections", which is checked, would come into play at all?
Thanks for pointing out how to use `codesign` to check whether an application is signed or not, this seems to be the first real break on this case.

  • Unable to access time machine backup. The folder "Documents" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents.

My MacBook Pro with 750GB storage refuses to startup due to a problem with logic board (unfortunately I'm in Singapore and there is no Apple store here and zero customer support).  I'm trying to access some of the files from the time machine back-up using my MacBook Air with 120GB storage, but I'm unable to open the backup.  I receive an error message "you don't have permission to see its contents". Unable to access time machine backup. The folder “Documents” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.
I don't really want to migrate the data from the time machine to the MacBook Air as I simply don't have sufficient storage space on the MacBook Air.  The iPhoto library which I'm trying to access is 200GB, which is more than the size of the MacBookAir.
Is there any way I can view the photos and documents stored on the time machine backup.
    Thank you very much.

When you setup the Mac, you created a Admin user account with say name X
You ran Migration Assistant and it migrated user Y from the Windows machine.
User Y has different permissions than User X.
User X can't normally access User Y's account.
So what you do is log out of User X via the Apple menu and into User Y, this way you have permission to access the files.
If you want to transfer files from User Y to User X account
Transfer files between user accounts on the same machine instructions
Finder > Go menu > Computer
A window appears with your boot drive, double click on it to open
Inside is Users folder, double click to open it
Inside is your User accounts, double click on the one you want to send files too
Double click on the Public folder drop the files into the DropBox folder,
The permissions will change and can be used in the other user account when you log into it and moved to the appropriate folders.
Applications are typically installed and kept in the Applications folder which is a global access folder all users can access to run them from, but not all users can modify unless they are a Admin user.
Windows programs won't run on a Mac, but they can be instaled into a virtual machine program that is running Windows.
Windows in BootCamp or Virtual Machine?

Did you use migration assistant when you set up the computer?
TM will treat this as a different computer and permissions issues can arise from that.
Pondini is the expert on that stuff.. hopefully he can drop in.
But I recommend you read all the FAQ to do with restore.. Q14-17.
And then look at the permissions issues he lists in troubleshooting.

  • Can't move any files... "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."

This is a strange one... I just recently did a complete format/reinstall of Lion because of very poor performance after upgrading.
So I'm on a totally fresh system, no TimeMachine restore or anything. I've installed all my apps from scratch - no prefrence file backups or anything. Everything is fresh.
Yesterday I tried to copy a file from one folder to another and I got the error "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items". Checked file permissions... repaired disk permissions... made sure I was logged in as admin (I only have one account)... everything looks good.
This is now happening when trying to copy any files anywhere on my machine... Very frustrating.
    There's a couple strange side-effects I've noticed:
    - I can move & copy files just fine in terminal... without sudo...
    - The little lock icon in the bottom right of the Get Info window doesn't do anything - I can't unlock it. I can still edit the permissions for the file/folder but I can't select the "apply to enclosed items..." option.
Does anybody know what the heck is going on?

    jsd2 wrote:
Try creating a new admin user account, logging into it, and then creating some new items on the Desktop and elsewhere. Does the same thing happen there?
    Ok the strangeness continues!
I created a new "TestAdmin" account, but it doesn't show up in the Users & Groups prefrences sidebar... The /Users/testadmin folder was created, but the account doesn't show up in the prefrences or login window...
I tried a reboot to see if the account would show up and it still doesnt.... However after the reboot I am now able to copy files again!
I'm paranoid that the problem will show up again since I have no idea what fixed it. I tried rebooting previously after repairing permissions which didn't solve the issue so it's not like I haven't rebooted since it started.
And now I have the issue of not being able to create user accounts.
A little dissapointed with Lion to be honest... the new features are cool but there are so many little bugs it really feels half-baked.

  • Can't save multiple folders to external drive. Get: "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." when dragging large folders to mac os extended journalled external drive from OS 10.6.8

    Hi
    I am feeling  VERY desperate!
After losing an external drive [dont ask....]  -   I got  another one :  2TB WD formatted properly [ OS extended journalled for mac ] ready for action to move  my thousands of files and images and ppts in hundreds of folders across from the laptop to this drive because I travel a bit with the laptop and this is too risky not to back up at home.
But this message came up after starting on moving folders across [** and not straight away, sometimes after moving  a folder  when  4 of 6 gb of files across  then the message comes up  = very frustrating]:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items."
I am  dragging mixed sometimes large complex folders to this  os extended journalled external drive from my mac book pro OS 10.6.8  - it would take decades to move items one by one or even folder by folder and really confusing.
I have  dragged-copied  various small folders and files across successfully, but it is only working 50:50 and I can't leave machine with the idea of things copying eg: overnight - it just won't work....
I have been browsing google and find some people describing in CODE how they overcome this 'message'   .... but  I  [and I guess some other viewers of this in future & also in desperation]  would need  instructions for beginners....  to try this type of thing.  I don't know any code.
How can this be happening - I feel ANGRY at APPLE !!!!  for not posting easy fix instructions yet re; this, or better still  updating software so it doesn't happen [ that I can find at least  !!! ] .   There seem to be hundreds of people stuck with this stupid message and inability to back up their projects etc.
    Can anyone help ?
    Many thanks

    hi Samberl
thanks a lot for the fast reply.
I was dragging folders from main folders on the laptop-desktop  onto the external drive icon - to copy them across....
Your suggestion sounds very promising -  I didn't know about 'cloning'.
Yes the idea is to backup the laptop -    I thought I would just move it all now, new - and then keep saving/dragging physically   across to the new drive myself each day or two...
Would this be the sizeof the internal hard drive = c.500 gb  ?   =   under the HD icon on desktop is written  :
    " 499.76gb , 311.5 gb free  "
I can erase and start agin on the new external drive - so this plan is to make two partititions, rather than the one at present, and make one of them 500 gb ?
I have found CCC [carbon copy cloner] googling - looks good.
When CCC site says it backs up  the hard drive - would this  mean all my files  [over 100 gb] that are mostly  in folders on the desktop, plus the others in itunes, iphotos etc found in the HD icon,  would all copy across successfully [wherever they are in the computer ]  ?
thanks again, hope you can clarify these things and then I will go for it.
It would be great and amazing if this 'lack of permission' message doesn't show up in the process of doing this ccc transfer - hopeful!

I backed up my old core 2 duo imac and and was trying to transfer files to my new 2011 imac and when i go to oppen a folder from what i transferred it says "The folder “Music” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents".  Why cant i access the files from my old mac?  I tried the time machine and that isnt working either.  I have files that I need to use on my new mac, all my old programs and such.  I thought they said it was easy to get your files from one mac to another.  Please help.

Your account names are probably different on the two Macs. If you know the UNIX command line, open a terminal window and run:
    $ id
You should see a line that starts with something like this:
    uid=501(your_user_id_here)
now check the owner of the folder you copied over:
    $ ls -ld Music
    drwx------+ 8 some_user_id_here  staff  272 May 14 16:08 Music
Do the IDs match? If not, you could change the ownership. Say your id is "johnsmith"
    $ chown -R johnsmith Music
Now try and access it with iTunes.

  • I can't seem to open (view) my photos.  I get an error message that says "the file couldn't be opened because you don't have permission to view it. To view or change permission, select the item in the finder and choose File. Get info."

    Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    2 - Run Option #1, Repair Permissions.

  • Error/warning message "you don't have permission to modify files in this network location"

    Hi,
We have a windows server 2008 running, and we access it via remote desktop. And there's this certain folder that all users access, and where we save important files. So, since this is where important files are stored, we wanted to disable deletion (and if
possible moving) of the folder and everything under it. However, it's harder than i thought. Right now, we have the permissions "Delete" and "Delete files and subfolders" disabled already, BUT when we try to save a file to this folder,
    we got this warning/error message:
"You don't have permission to modify files in this network location"
The file is saved however, but there's no content. But when we try to cut/copy an existing file to this folder, it works.
Does anyone know how a workaround on this issue. I've already spent days configuring the settings, and when one works, another issue comes up. This is really frustrating.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
What are NTFS Permissions and Share Permissions of the shared folder? If you remove delete permissions, when someone tried to create a new folder, they couldn't rename it. Without Delete permission, we can open, modify a file and save with the same file name
but cannot create a new file with a new name.
