Issue on column length changing in HANA

Hi Experts,
I encounter the following issues.
1. Try to create a column table with a DATE type column, and insert some values.
CREATE COLUMN TABLE test1(D DATE);
INSERT INTO test1(D) VALUES (CURRENT_DATE);
SELECT D, length(D) FROM test1;
The result would be like:
D                      length(D)
Dec 8, 2014     10
2. Try to change the type of column D from DATE to NVARCHAR(8), and it did work.
ALTER TABLE TEST1 ALTER(D NVARCHAR(8));
SELECT D, length(D) FROM test1
The result would be like:
D                      length(D)
2014-12-08      10
3. Try to insert a string with more than 8 characters into table, but failed.
insert into TEST1 values(to_nvarchar(current_date));
Could not execute 'insert into TEST1 values(to_nvarchar(current_date))' in 258 ms 23 µs .
SAP DBTech JDBC: [274]: inserted value too large for column: Failed in "D" column with the value '2014-12-08'
Questions:
Why is it possible that HANA still keeps the original record of DATE type with length greater than 8(in this case 10) after the column type has changed to NVARCHAR(8)? I assume it would either not allow to change the column type from DATE to NVARCHAR(8) because it contains a record with length greater than 8, or it would just drop the record or change it to other format, something like that?
Appreciated for any input.
Thanks and Regards,
Aron

Dear Aron,
In the first step you inserted the current date and you got the result on select. in DB date is stored in internal format like 20141208. so the total length is 8.
In the second case you changed the type to CHAR 8 and the data stored in the DB is also having length of 8.
In the third case you tried to insert '2014-12-08', since the type is CHAR, now the length is of your input is 10, it will consider the - also. that is the reason for this error.  Not sure how you got the length 10 on select.

  • Explorer InfoSpaces on HANA Views - column label changes cause issues?

    Key question is – do simply label changes in HANA view cause issues with Explorer InfoSpaces?  Furthermore, on source view changes, does the InfoSpace also need to be adjusted?
    What we have observed is this
    1. InfoSpaces have been created using the “SAP HANA appliance” connection highlighted below. The corresponding “Home” screen is shown below that, so there are around 14 or so InfoSpaces that should be available.
    2. Yesterday, there was a production deployment that contained some changes to the underlying views in the form of label changes (not column name changes).
    3. Now, in the “Manage” screen we cannot see these same 14 InfoSpaces available under the expected connection. Instead, they are all available under the “Source Unavailable” node with the default action of “Change Source” shown.
    Additionally, we are seeing some strange behavior where certain facets are actually containing the wrong data. For example, in a facet/column called “Source Type”, where the expected values are “NBP or PBP”, we are seeing Material numbers like “00001112453”. This leads me to believe that there is a mapping issue under the covers.
    Thanks,
    Justin

    Our BOE Explorer is Version: 14.1.1 Build: 1072   - I’m not sure how this corresponds with your 69.01 to 74 numbers (release note numbers?).
    But it sounds identical to your description.
    One of our observations: if we change the sorting on a facet pane using the upper right sort control the values are corrected for a while, at least until we change a measure and the set of facets get updated with the miss-mapped values again.    This only occurs on some models and we haven’t been able to determine what the underlying criteria might be that aggravates the problem.
    Thanks for your input – it helps us determine a viable path forward.
    Cheers,
    Tony

  • How to change (decrease) primary key column length?

    Hi all,
    I have plenty of data in the table and I need to decrease the primary key column from CHAR(17) to CHAR(13).
    I try to use:
    ALTER TABLE xx MODIFY (prmy_key (13));
    but Oracle give:
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01441: column to be modified must be empty to decrease column length
    Can anyone give me advice on what is the best way to decrease column length? Thanks in advance for your help.

    To add to the above, I have done a simple test in the lines that I was suggesting the solution for this problem,
       CREATE TABLE testA
       (pk_col   varchar2(20), jd date, constraint pk1 PRIMARY KEY(pk_col));
       --Insert data into testA
       create table testB as select * from testA;
       TRUNCATE table testA;
       ALTER TABLE testA modify(pk_col VARCHAR2(10));
       INSERT INTO testA SELECT substr(pk_col, 1, 10), jd from testB;
       DROP TABLE testB;
       Select constraint_name, constraint_type, status from all_constraints
       Where table_name = 'TESTA';
       CONSTRAINT_NAME                C STATUS
       PK1                            P ENABLEDAlter command is successful as the table is empty. TRUNCATE flushes the data and resets the high water mark keeping all the constraints. If we safely want to use the TRUNCATE as far as storage issues are concerned,
    TRUNCATE table table_name reuse storage;
    I think, this would accoplish what has been asked.

    Hi ,
    I am receiving the following error on the Target side( which have LONG data type. one of the tale name is IMAGE_TABLE) when replicating from 9i to 11g. Table structure is same but still following error persists on REPLICAT , Please help.

    Any chance you have an out of sync DEFGEN file ( if you are using DEFGEN that is ).
    We recently had an issue where we were getting column size mismatch errors... developer changed something on the source DB... Corresponding change was not made in target DB and we needed to refresh the DEFGEN. After the refresh we were OK to continue processing without an error. Might be something to check.

    -->the output of the report should be trasnsfered to excel sheet
    -->then the excel sheet should be sent to XI..
    My doubts are:
    -> is it possible with every report or we need some extra code to achieve this
    -> If yes, then how exactly it should be done. can you please explain in more detail.

  • How can we restrict Column length in ALV using POWL.

    Hello,
    I have a new assignment o ABAP Web Dynpro, data displaying ALV by using POWL is a part of that assignment. Everything went fine and at last moment I was stuck with a small issue. In my application I am displaying first ALV by using POWL concept and on the basis of selected row I am displaying second level LAV by using normal ALV procedure (SALV_WD_TABLE). Here the issue is as soon as second ALV is displaying columns in first level ALV are getting expanded. How can I restrict Column length in first level ALV using POWL. I browsed a lot for getting the solution for this, Can any one help me out from this issue.

  • Export failure due to column length in DRM 11.1.2.1

    Hi All,
    We have migrated recently from 11.1.1.43 to 11.1.2.1 and the issue is with one of the exports
    In the earlier version you have the option of manipulating the column length inspite of the actual length set in the table column. This can be edited in the column options when the table is selected at the last option of export.
    Now the issue is i could see the length of the column in the 11.1.2.1 export option but i was unable to edit that length and reduce it to the required
    Viz., i have the column length of 80 set in the table and in the export it is restricted to 50 in the old version. Now i'm unable to edit this in 11.1.2.1
    Could anyone help me on this? I believe i may be missing some basics here
    Thanks

    In the earlier versions by default every property length is treated as 50 Characters while we export the data from DRM,
    Now in the new version we need to alter the table before we export based on the property length,
    Thanks,
    Murali

  • Max column length

    I will like to find out what is the MAX column length for nchar and nvarchar types using AL16UTF16.
    As per the metalink article 'Examples and limits of BYTE and CHAR semantics usage' it is 1000 and 2000 for 2 bytes characters. But in Al16UTF16, characters can also take up to 4 bytes. So does that change the max limits.
    Also what is MAX length for a Clob and NClob type

    in Al16UTF16, characters can also take up to 4 bytes. No. One character (code point) is represented in 2 bytes. However, some characters are mapped to surrogate pair of code points, as pointed out by the Note "In AL16UTF16 this will use 2 UTF16 codepoints and so occupy 4 bytes.".
    So the limits noted still applies. If you have logical characters mapped to more than one code point, more space will of course be required for storage.

  • Power View Enhancement Request - Allow for columns to drop off PowerView when column name changes in data model instead of rendering the PowerView inaccessible

    Currently in PowerView, if a column name changes in the tabular model, and that column is being used in a PowerView chart, the PowerView will become inaccessible.
    It would be nice if it functioned similar to Pivot Table. If a column name changes for a column that is being used in a Pivot Table, the field is just removed from the chart, and the user can select the newly named column.

    Hi plantm,
    After testing the issue in my environment, I can reproduce it. After we change a column name which is used in a Power View chart, Power view will render the message that” The external data connection has been disabled for this Power View report. Please enable
    the connection.” when we reopen the file.
    To fix this issue, we can click Refresh button under POWER VIEW menu, then it would prompt us that” Power View was not able to complete the action due to a query failure. This can happen if the structure of your data has changed, in which case closing and
    re-opening the application will resolve the problem.”
    According to the error message, we should try to reopen the file to fix this issue. Power view will render the message that” Please refresh to see the data for this Power View Sheet. You can set properties in the Connection Properties dialog so that the
    data refreshes automatically when you open the file.” when we reopen the file. Then we can refresh it again, the report will be displayed without that field.
    Based on my research, inherently what the message means is that Power View cannot be used as a tool for snapshot reporting. With an Excel PivotTable, we can see the data last saved in the PivotTable. Power View, however, does not behave the same way – it
    won’t render the last saved state. If we want to avoid this message when we reopen the file, there are two methods:
    When we create the Power View report, we can select the checkbox that “Refresh data when opening the file”.
    After it’s been set up, go to Connections on the Data menu, then choose Properties.
    For more details about the settings, we can refer to the following blog:

    This is the technique I would recommend. If you'd like to wrap this
    mechanism up in the model class itself, create a subclass of QueryModelBase
    that provides such a method and use that as the base class for all your
    QueryModels.

    Chidu,
    The result set that you get back is a JDBC ResultSet, not a "JATO" resultset. In ND, everything was wrapped in a "spider" data
    structure, and therefore, difficult to get to the underlying datastructure, in many cases. In some case ND made it easier to do
    certain things, and in other ways, made it more difficult or impossible(like seeing the SQL for an insert, update, delete).

    Anyway, looking at the java.sql package, you can do this.
    java.sql.ResultSet rs = <jata-model>.getResultSet();
    java.sql.ResultSetMetaData rsMeta = rs.getMetaData();
    // not sure if this is what you need, but it was the closest thing I couldfind
    int colSize = rsMeta.getColumnDisplaySize(int column);
    There are numerous other methods in the ResultSetMetaData interface thatmay be of use as well.

  • Need help in modifying the column length

    Hi Experts,
    I need to modify the length of a column from char(10) to char(5), but it's showing the error of:
    ALTER TABLE appr_group_table MODIFY (APPR_TBLNO CHAR(5)) It's showing the below error:
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01441: cannot decrease column length because some value is too bigI've checked in the dbase but there is no any value of this column having more than 5 characters:
    SQL> SELECT APPR_TBLNO FROM appr_group_table;
    APPR_TBLNO
    ANTAB
    ANTAB
    ANTST
    SCCTR
    SOTAB
    SOTAB
    SOTAB

    11 rows selected.Thnx in advance for helping me out.....

    char means fixed length variable. when you say char(10) oracle will reserve 10 places for your data. that means in your output what you are seeing as blank spaces are also considered as data. that is the reason, it is not allowing you to reduce the size.
    better solution is to create new column with varchar2 or char(5) datatype and transfer this column data into new column and then drop original column.

  • Set the column length in an sql query

    Hi,
    Is there a way to set the column length in a query without using sqlplus commands like row size and format column.
    I'd like to do it just from the sql query itself.

  • How to decrease the column length in working time (CATS) table

    Hi all,
    Can you please tell me how we can decrease the column length in CATS table in the portal. Is it something we can do in webdynpro or in the back end.
    Thanks in advance.

    I was looking for something similar and ran across OSS Note 989453. I would recommend checking out this note to see if it helps. Apparently, there is a JAVA program error that makes the columns wider than they need to be.
    We have not yet tried this so if you happen to use it, let me know how it works for you.

  • How to start a workflow when a value in specific column is changed?

    HI !!
    I would like that  my workflow will run only if a value on a specific colunm will change.
    is there a way to do it without using a third colunm ?
    thank you !
    nikita.

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you wanted to start a workflow when a value in specific column is changed.
    When you create workflow, if you check the “start the workflow automatically when an item is changed”, the workflow will be started automatically once the item is edited.
    In the other word, no matter which column we changed, the the workflow will be started automatically.
    As a workaround, we can add condition or action to make the workflow excute the next step only if the value in specific column is changed.
    There are two options to achieve it.
    Use the “Wait for Field Change in Current Item" action”. If you add the action at the first,  the workflow will excute the next step until the column is chaned to the specific value.
       2. User the “If any value equals to value” condition. If you add the condition at the first, the workflow will excute the next step if the condition is satisfied.
    Thank you for your understanding.
