Issue Opening MAC Zip file on PC

When i create an Archive of files (Zip File) on my Mac and send it to certain PC users, they come back telling me it says it's ZERO KBs when they unzip it.
Which is weird, because all the PCs we have in the office can open the Mac Zip files fine.
I thought it was because their winzip thing was out of date, but they are all telling me they are up to date.
Again, this is only happening to a select few PC users, most PC users i'm sending it to can open it fine.
Anyone have any advice on this or why it is happening to these certain PC users?
Thanks

Select "Attachments" in Mail's "Edit" menu and set "Always Send Windows Friendly Attachments". If that isn't set, a Mac file may be sent in two pieces; the resource fork (often zero bytes), and the data fork. The PC users may be using different mail programs, and some are just seeing the resource fork. The data fork is probably there somewhere if they know how to get to it. The resource fork isn't needed for anything you would send to a PC.

  • Mac zip files won't open in Windows PC

I have been right clicking and compressing raw .mov video files to send from the UK to Australia via wetransfer. I am using a Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion. Each set of zipped files is between 3GB - 8GB in size and they (compress) and zip and send fine. But my client is on a Windows PC and only now tells me they are having problems opening the "zip" files I have sent them. They get the message that the zip is "invalid". Any ideas what can be wrong here? I tested them on my Mac by reopening and they work file.
    Many thanks in advance.

Step one would be to try them on a local windoze box. That should give you some indication of what might be wrong. Alternatively, try the Terminal command gzip. Read about it by typing in man gzip in a Terminal window and then pressing the return key.

  • Problems opening documents (zip files, excel) after upgrade to Snow Leopard

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have not been able to open a lot of files. Mainly, zip files and excel documents (which I had no problem opening before the upgrade. It seems that when I save the files down (from my email or whatever) the files go into the "Archive Utility" program, I try to open them from the Finder but they still won't open (or unzip).
When I go to open an excel document (most likely from a PC user), I get a msg that the file isn't formated for excel. However, before the upgrade to Snow Leopard I had no issue opening this same file in Mac Office-Excel.
Thanks in advance for your help/advise.

    Hello Katherine:
I have not experienced those problems, but I do not receive Excel spreadsheets via E-mail. My Stuffit Expander version is 13.0.2.
You might want to check your Excel preferences to see if there is a setting that needs to be changed (compatibility?). I use Office 2004 so your version may be different.
You could also trash preference files to see if something happened during the install.

  • Error when opening a zipped file transfred to the FTP via ABAP program

    Hi All,
I have extracted the files from al11 and have zipped them and moved the zipped file to FTP site.
But when I open the zipped file in FTP site, it shows the file names, but they dont look like real files(looks as text)...Even when copied the zipped file to the local pc and tried opening it the result was same.
Note : For testing when the same zipped file is written to al11 and dowloaded from there using CG3y it works fine.
Also created a zipped folder manualy and copied it to the FTP site and tried opening it.....It opened but displayed there are no records in it (which is incorrect), But when copied the same file back to local PC it displayed correctly.
Please let me know hoe to resolve this issue.

  • Safari opening linked .zip files directly from DVD instead of downloading

    Dear all,
Safari opening linked .zip files directly from DVD (via Windows explorer) instead of downloading it tru browser click - it's working just fine in FF, Chrome IE. Is this a known issue? or something can be done by modifying browser setting/pref.
    Expecting more advise on this.
    Configurations: Windows XP
    Safari: 5.1.7
Note: ensured there is no space in the file path, just linked the .zip file using href attribute!
Also tried with .xls, .doc insted of .zip same issue appearing.
    Thanks in advance,
    Thirilog

    Hi
appzapper & such are pretty flaky at removing things usefully, imo.
Use the uninstaller for speed download - http://www.yazsoft.com/products/speed-download/faqs/?how-to-un-install-speed-dow nload-properly
or get a hold of FindAnyFile or easyfind & search for Growl & Speeddownload & yazsoft - but from all I hear, the uninstaller works fine.
Failing that, Safari's settings plist file isn't in caches
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist
    is the place
& if you're still stuck, test & maybe download another browser using a New User Account.

  • Unzipping Mac .zip files on a Windows PC

Does anybody know of a Windows program that will decompress Mac .zip (gz) files reliably? I've Tried StuffIt Standard for Windows but it quits every time with a warning, "Engine Error:Internal Error." Sure, I can make .sit files on the Mac and use Stuffit to expand them in Windows, but that's not the solution I'm looking for. If I already have a Mac .zip file on my Windows PC is there any way to open it without using a Mac?
I've searched these forums but all my searches come up with answers to the opposite question: How do I open Windows .zip files on my Mac?

A .gz file is not a "Mac Zip file" but a GNU Zip file, which is commonly used on Unix and Linux computers (OS X is a form of Unix).
You can get a gzip application for Windows here, or Google for something like "gzip for Windows".
Archives made by the Finder on a Mac are regular zip files (.zip files), just like the ones you would see on Windows.

We all have the same issue with not being able to open "zip" or "txt" attachments, I just sent customer support an email asking when we will get some type of list showing the reported bugs and some type of change list when they issue updates. We need to know what changes have been made when they issue OS updates.

  • I have a 2007 iMac with version 10.6.8.  When downloading "some" files to my computer, these files become "zip files."  When I open the zip file, it produces a document in some coding language. How can I open the file to produce a legible document?

I have a 2007 iMac with version 10.6.8 and 4GB of expanded memory.  When downloading "some" emailed documents, the downloaded file becomes a "zip file," which when opened looks like a coded message.  How can I open the "zip file" so that it produces a legible document?  Please, help!!  thank you!!!

A "zip file" is a compressed file. "Zipping" in principle does not and cannot change the contents. So that if the contents before zipping are garbage, or unreadable on a Mac, when you expand the file you will get garbage or an unreadable file.
The first thing to verify therefore is whether the file, before it was zipped, was in a "Mac friendly" format. Can you do that?
You do not need an App to zip or unzip. These functions are built in on our Macs.
And yes, zipping and unzipping using the built in functionality, work fine in OS 10.6.8. And 10.7 and 10.8 and 10.9.

  • Mac zip file on PC

I have a problem when I send a mac zipped file to a PC user and they try to unzip the file
they are asked for a password. I didn't put password protection on the file and the PC user (XP) says they can unzip other files ok. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have this problem, randomly and occasionally...ie it happens rarely and when it does I can find no difference between a successful zip and "password" zip.
It is not to do with e mailing. For example today I made a zip of six jpegs. I dragged it into my XP in Parallels and XP wanted a password. I then made a zip of six different jpegs in the same directory and dragged it into XP and it unzipped fine!!
I did the exercise because I had sent the bad one to a customer via Filechute and he complained he was being asked for a password, which is exactly what I found when I tried it my XP Parallels.
I have done "get info" on the files in the good and bad one and can see absolutely no differences.
I have tried zipping the bad ones with Finder, Filechute and Betterzip with the same result.
The bad one will open OK in Vista but not XP.
I use Filechute a lot to send jpegs to customers and this only happens about 1 in 50 times, for no apparent reason.
    Really baffling!
Would love some help on this
    Thanks

  • Acrobat 9 tries to open all .zip files

Acrobat 9 tries to open all zip files I attempt to download - not just zipped PDF's. Under folder management, the zip file type is not associated with Acrobat and is not showing with a PDF icon. The zip file will not open in any unzipping program, it just goes to Acrobat.
When I download any zip file I get a message like this:
Acrobat could not open "somefilename.zip" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged.
This happens with every zip file - how do I disassociate Acrobat from all zip file types?

You need to change the file type association in Windows Explorer of the Folders Control Panel.
The easiest way would to use Windows Explorer to find a file with the ".ZIP" file extension and then use the right mouse click to bring up the context menu. You can then select the "Open With..." option, make sure you check the option to set the 'always associate' (it is the only option) and then find WinZip, PKZip, RAR, or what ever program you use to open the "ZIP" type file.
