Issue removing kde

Hi, I'm a new Linux user, having never installed Linux or used it up until a few days ago.  Seems pretty simple and I'm picking it up quickly, but I'm having trouble getting rid of the KDE GUI.  I've removed it from the daemons portion of rc.conf and I've commented it in the xinitrc file so that when I boot I'm just at the prompt and after logging into root I type in pacman -Rsn kde (also tried -R & -Rs) and it tells me:
"error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: libkipi: requires kdelibs"
What exactly am I doing wrong here?  Must I skip dependancy checks or do -c to remove the offending packages that rely on kde?
Thanks for any assistance

Might be some odd glitch in pacman but I haven't run across this type of thing since i've not used kde in arch for a long, long time.  I installed and uninstalled kdemod not so long ago with no problems but that's a customized form of kde so probably not relevant.
Edit: you sure you didn't install digikam or gwenview before kde as far as I can see kipi is image plugins mostly for kde.  Who knows?

  • [SOLVED] Post installation issues with KDE 4.7.0

    I reinstalled my machine (DELL Studio 540 PC) with Arch Linux 64 bit. I did an install using LVM2 and RAID (have 2 500 GB drives in my machine). Everything went fine with the installation and bootloader (grub2) but I'm having a few issues with KDE and grub2.
    1. When booting my machine grub2 gives an error saying "error: fd0 not found" (twice). My machine does not have a floppy drive and has never had one. There is no option in the BIOS to turn floppy off. So why is grub2 complaining about it?
    2. With KDE 4.7.0 thumbnails of pdf files are not generated anymore, they were with previous versions of KDE4. Anybody else have that issue with 4.7?
    3. I have and Brother DCP-7045n printer in my network and when try to print from a KDE program (Koffice, Kate, Kwrite, Kile etc.), the margins are completely messed up. The print preview on the screens looks right but the actual print everything shift upwards to the right. So things on top of a page are cut off for example. Printing from Gnome/GTK apps (Acrobat Reader, Libreoffice etc.) do not show this behaviour. I 've had this issue with KDE4 since KDE 4.3. Here is the original ustream bug:
    https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=196590
    Anybody got an idea how to fix this?
    4. Skype is crashing on me on startup constantly several times before it finally runs. I've had this problem since the 2.2.x series got released? Anybody got a fix for that. I was hoping a reinstall would fix that problem (same with the printing issue) but no luck.
    5. I'm using KDE's microblogging plasma app to check my twitter account but I can't get to remember my password. Everytime I log into I have to manually login to my twitter and kdewallet is running and has my password stored and everything. This one really pusles me.
    6. The final issue I having and issue was also the  reason why I wanted to reinstall my machine in the first place. I originally used KDEmod as my desktop but they stopped making KDEmod some time ago when they started working on Chakra. So I removed KDEmod and installed KDE from Arch directly. A nice feature of KDE4 is its ability to generate previews on folders containing images and videos. When I switched to KDE that feature stopped working. So I was expecting that with a fresh install that this work and it does except for folders containing jpeg files. If I have a folder containing only jpeg files no previews/thumbnails are generated on the folder but previews the jpeg files themselves are generated. Does anybody else have that problem with jpegs and folder previews?
    Hope somebody can help me with these few issues...

    Have you installed grub2 with that --no-floppy flag as described in:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Grub2#BIOS_systems?

    Nope. Is it selected in dolphin>settings>general>previews.
    fettouhi wrote:5. I'm using KDE's microblogging plasma app to check my twitter account but I can't get to remember my password.
    Well that won't be a solution, but you might use choqok instead - at least it stores the password.
    To answer your first answer, yes I installed grub2 with the --no-floppy option as mentioned in the wiki. Regarding 2 I don't understand why that works for you then? I have all things turned on under previews (folder, video, jpeg etc.) but as mentioned in my first post I have no previews with pdf files and jpegs do generate on folder previews. Finally regarding 5 the microblogging plasma app worked fine on my old installation even after I updated to KDE 4.7.0. The password issue I'm having is on my fresh install.

  • Gnome issues with KDE apps

    Well, I'm trying to check Gnome out, but I really need some guidence..
    I'm having some issues running KDE apps, namely kxmame. It just terminates at a certain point. Is there a set of commands I can run in order for my environment to be KDE friendly?
    Also, is there a clipboard utility for gnome (like KDE's klipper)?

  • [SOLVED] Pacman failed retrieving file 'core.db' after removing KDE

    Hey, I had to remove KDE and foolishly used the -Rsc flag. Now, trying to update yields:
    [root@Gal-PC2 gal]# pacman -Sy
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirror.isoc.org.il : Resolving timed out after 10524 milliseconds
    error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirror.us.leaseweb.net : Resolving timed out after 10523 milliseconds
    I tryed using the -Sy and -Syy flags to update the database, and made sure I am not using ipv6. I think the -Rsc flag might deleted an importent package. I can connect to the net, and I can acess mirrors using http and I can ping the mirrors. The error persists on a large number of mirrors. Any help will be appriciated.

    EDIT: SOLVED!
    Ok, so I did indeed disable ipv6 as I promised, but turns out I put in the GRUB kernel line "ipv6.disable_ipv6=1". Upon re-reading the wiki, turns out this means ipv6 is disabled but tunnels with ipv6 may be opened by programs. I changed to "ipv6.disable=1" and pacman updates away! I hope others will find this usefull. Be careful!

  • Removing KDE entirely

    Hi everyone. I have a question... but first some background.
    I have KDE 4/5 installed at the moment, but I'd like to remove it totally and completely. I don't use a login manager - when I log into TTY1, X starts with KDE, and I go from there. On that note, when I do remove KDE, I know I'll have to modify some file to tell it to start the other DE I want to replace KDE with (Xfce). That's fine.
    Why do I want to remove KDE? Well, KDE is in a weird transition from KDE 4 into the thing it's becoming with QT5, Plasma 5, etc. This means that I'm technically running both QT4 and 5, and it's introducing too much bloat for my tastes. I'd be interested in returning to KDE once KDE5 completely replaces KDE4, but until then there's too much unnecessary crap installed on my system.
    So the question.. exactly how do I go about totally removing KDE4, and everything that's come along with KDE5? Does remove the base group and all dependencies get rid of everything? Or, am I better off removing every single last installed package, a move I don't want to make seeing as how I've installed a lot of AUR packages?
    I don't even mind trashing my KDE conf files. I want it all gone.

    why? you can stay with kde4 4.14.3, without kde5 libs:) https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1529823

  • How to remove KDE desktop?

    After using XFCE for a while, I decide that it will be my main DE, so I'd like to uninstall KDE desktop.
    But of course I'd still like to use KDE apps like Kile or Kdevelop.
    Is there any easy way to do that? I guess "pacman -R kde" is not the answer, because it will remove the entire KDE.
    Or maybe I have to remove the packages manually, like "pacman -R kdegames", or "pacman -R kdeedu" ?
    Back when I was using Ubuntu, I could to this using "apt-get remove kde-desktop"

    Check the dependencies of your required packages (you'd use pacman -Qi instead). That way you know exactly what to keep and what to chuck.

  • Suspend to RAM/HDD causes strange mouse issues in KDE

    I suspect that this problem is related to something taking focus and not releasing it, but I'm having a very hard time identifying what, and I'm not sure on my next steps of investigation.
    I have a newly installed Fujitsu Lifebook P701 laptop, set up with KDE (installed with KDE-Base). The system will Hibernate perfectly, either to HDD or RAM. It will come up correctly and get back to the login screen. I am able to log in fine and the mouse always responds correctly here. Once I have logged back in, the mouse responds correctly for a few seconds (this amount of time is variable). After these few seconds the mouse will move on screen, but when clicking it either doesn't respond at all, or responds in an unexpected way (depending on where on screen is clicked). Some examples of this behaviour:
    1. Click on the K button in the task bar - Either the K menu opens, but nothing in the menu can be clicked; or the menu doesn't open at all.
    2. Click on programs in the task bar - Either the program will maximise/minimise, but doesn't respond to right click; or the program doesn't respond at all (the response can be both for different programs).
    3. Click on a link in web page - no response
    4. Click anywhere else on a web page - either no response, or text is selected (from a single click).
    5. Click on the top of a window - the four arrow cursor immediately comes up and the window starts to move, clicking again doesn't release the window.
    Investigation done so far:
    1. Removed every activity that is running (task manger, notification etc), the only one not removed so far is the task bar itself.
    2. checked .xsession-errors for obvious errors (none found).
    3. Used kwin --replace, the issue still occurs after this is run.
    4. Closed every program that was running and tested.
    5. Read around on the KDE and Arch forums to find anything similar, I can find a couple of posts that are similar, but no solutions as yet.
    6. Done a full upgrade to the system (this was a couple of days ago now).
    Investigation I've not done so far but am planning on doing:
    1. Creating a new user - As the issue started on the first hibernation of the laptop I don't think this will fix it, but it's worth a go.
    2. Installing another WM to prove this is a KDE issue (I'm pretty sure it is and I don't have a huge amount of space as I installed an SSD).
    I can get the laptop to work again by restarting KDM (systemctl restart kdm) so it's fixable, but I'd really like to get to the bottom of it.
    I've posted to Laptop fault as I'm not 100% sure this is a KDE issue, but I suspect it will be (it certainly seems to be similar to other issues that have been identified as KDE specific).
    What are your next recommended steps of investigation? I'm really stumped on what could be causing this. As I say at the top I suspect it's a focus issue but I have no idea what is stealing focus and how to find the culprit.

    I have similar problems since the last kernel upgrade: Prior to that everything on my laptop worked fine. After, when I close the lid (set to "sleep") the screen returns, the mouse appears to work, clicking on the panel often does not work, the menu may or may not pop up......

  • [SOLVED] Major weird issues with KDE/Qt apps and unicode

    Hi, I've tried to search for my problem, but nothing has showed up, so if this has already been answered, please forgive me.
    Anyway, I use KDE as my primary desktop environment with SKIM as my unicode input method. After installing SKIM and Japanese fonts back when I first set Arch up, I have never had any issues with inputting unicode or displaying it in any program, whether that be irssi running through Konsole, or the song titles in Amarok. That all changed this afternoon, somehow...
    The only major changes I can remember making to my system today are the following:
    1.) I installed Awesome Window Manager to check it out
    2.) I installed a pkgbuild of urxvt
    3.) I made an .Xdefaults file and added these lines to customize my urxvt
    After messing around with these things, I decided that Awesome wasn't a suitable WM for me, went back into KDE, and removed the package. I noticed a few strange issues after that though:
    1. Foreign characters refuse to display properly in any terminal emulator.
    2. Foreign characters come up as jumble in Konqueror now as well, when they never did before:
    3. SKIM refuses to let me input Japanese characters with Anthy in any KDE app. The option for Japanese just isn't there, even though I have it installed:
    4. Foreign characters display perfectly as tags for songs in Amarok, but if the music file itself has foreign characters in it, the title is garbled and the track is unplayable:
    5. SKIM works absolutely fine in non-KDE apps like Firefox:
    As seen in the last example, my Japanese fonts are all installed, and SKIM is working as it should in any non-KDE app, suggesting that there are no problems on that end. The issue seems to be with something in KDE, but I have no idea where to begin fixing it. Furthermore, I have no idea what could have caused this issue in the first place. I don't see how installing a window manager or terminal emulator package could have screwed up my fonts, and the .Xdefaults file I wrote just contained config information for urxvt. Nothing else. I even ended up deleting that, but it did not fix my problem.
    If you could be of any help, I'd really appreciate it. I have a lot of files with foreign characters in them, and being able to read them is essential.

    I was just looking into locales, actually.
    My current locale is:
    LANG=en_US.utf8
    LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8"
    LC_NUMERIC="en_US.utf8"
    LC_TIME="en_US.utf8"

    LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.utf8"
    LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.utf8"
    LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.utf8"
    LC_ALL=
    and locale -a brings up:
    C
    POSIX
    en_US.utf8
    Is there anything here that could be causing this issue?
    I'm curious how my locale got messed with in the first place if this is indeed the problem...

    Now the example input:
    <MainNode>
    <subnode>
    <key> 1001 </key>
    <val< 1 </Val>
    </Subnode>
    <subnode>
    <key> 1002 </key>
    <val> 2 </val>
    </subnode>
    <subnode>
    <key> 1001 </key>
    <val> 1 </val>
    </subnode>
    Output should be:
    <MainNode>
    <Subnode>
    <key> 1001 </key>
    <val> 1 </val>
    </subnode>
    <subnode>
    <key> 1002 </key>
    <val> 2 </val>
    </subnode>
    i.e., it should remove the duplicate keys.
    I tried as below, but doesnot work:
    key --> removeContext --> Merge userdefinded function -->Subnode
    Merge:
    public void merge(String[] key, ResultList result, Container container) {
    HashSet hs = new HashSet();
    for(int i = 0; i < a.length; i++) {
        hs.add(a<i>);
    Iterator it = hs.iterator();
    while(it.hasNext()) {
        String val = it.next().toString();
        result.addValue(val);
        result.addContextChange();
    Any other solution?

    Hi laxmi,
      First try to sort those values by Key using Sort and collapse context so that when sorted all the similar elments group together then apply collapse context so that only the first repetition (1001) will be considered .Then use split by value (on change) and map .Try to think to do using predefined function SORT.

  • [SOLVED] weird graphics issue on KDE

    look what is this
    what is going on here
    everything else works fine (posting from chromium right now)
    i figure it might be a driver issue
    lspci gives VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
    so i installed extra/xf86-video-intel 2.17.0-2 (xorg-drivers xorg) [installed] X.org Intel i810/i830/i915/945G/G965+ video drivers
    are there alternative open source drivers, or should i try setting up proprietary drivers somehow
    or maybe this isnt even a driver issue?
    edit: forgot to mention this is KDE full install with the latest stable xorg and kde packages

    There are no proprietary drivers for intel, there's just what you have installed. There's one problem though - 8xx cards aren't supported anymore. You're lucky you get any picture at all. But for proper functioning you'll have to either go without 3d acceleration, or possibly without any acceleration at all (except xv overlay for video playback).
    To turn off 3d accel, create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf with this:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "old intel stuff"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "DRI" "off"
    EndSection
    To turn off all acceleration:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "old intel stuff"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "ShadowFB" "on"
    EndSection

  • Minor issues after KDE 4.9 upgrade.

    Hello All.
    After upgrading to KDE 4.9, I noticed:
    1.  My computer took some extra time to shutdown (only when running on AC
        power).  I ran a diff on a snapshot of my processes taken before starting
        X, and after shutting it down, and found that kactivitymanagerd is the
        problem-- it does not respond to SIGTERM, only SIGKILL.  I guess it is not
        a huge issue, but it annoys me nevertheless.  Executing `pkill --signal 9
        kactivityman` solves the issue, but I don't know where to put it...  my
        .xinitrc runs `exec startkde`, so I never get the chance there.  Any
        suggestions?  Also, is anyone else having this problem?  Is this worth a
        bug report?
    2.  Some of the kwin effects seem less smooth.  In particular, the "show
        desktop grid" effect (most others seem fine).  Did anyone else notice
        this?  Maybe I'm crazy, but I swear it was smoother in 4.8.  If anyone can
        confirm, did you find an answer?  I tried to set the thumbnails to
        "smooth" instead of "accurate", but it didn't seem to help.  By the way,
        this is on an X220 with intel graphics hardware (and the i915 kernel
        module).
    Has anyone successfully downgraded KDE from their cache before?  I want to go
    back to 4.8, but I'm scared of creating a much larger disaster.
    Thanks in advance.
    ***Update***
    Running my power-saving script fixes the first issue with kactivitymanagerd
    (which is why it only happened on AC).  I get the feeling this will be
    something obscure, so it is probably best to not waste your time
    investigating.  But if you do run into this, I'm happy to share my script,
    fwiw

    I tried out dolphin and konqueror just now, and had no issues.  I don't use
    them very often, but I've never seen them crash before.
    @masteryod:  Indeed.  But before filing bug reports, I like to check with the
    friendly Arch community to get a little feedback and make sure that, as you
    mentioned, it isn't my own fault for having some messed up configuration.
    This is a valid use of the forum, right?
    PS Lead developer of kwin is suggesting porting desktop grid to
    qml...
    I'm not sure what to think of the QML re-write: that sounds like a
    re-organization / feature addition, but I don't know if it acknowledges the
    4.8 --> 4.9 performance regression that we've observed.  I think will file a
    report as soon as I get the chance.
    Also, I have one update:  I think the first problem I mentioned
    (kactivitymanagerd refusing to die) might be somewhat me-specific, so don't
    look too hard for a solution.  The reason it only happens when I am on AC is
    that in this case my power-saving script is *not* run.  If I run the powersave
    script, kactivitymanagerd will exit at the right time o_O  No clue why the
    script would fix this.  There's nothing exotic in the script, and I still
    contend this is a bug, but I'm not sure it would be worth your time to
    investigate.
    Thanks again, everyone.

  • How to go about removing KDE packages in Gnome?

    Somehow I seem to have ended up with a few KDE applications installed in my Gnome installation, and I'm not sure where they came from. I've tried removing them using pacman, but I can never find the correct application name. Is there a way to get rid of all things KDE related in one swoop?
    Thanks!

    Awebb wrote:
    How did they end up beeing on your system? Did you install them manually?
    So you have THAT many packages on your system that a manual search is too time comsuming?
    You can do a lot of filtering with pacman -Q. If those packages were installed manually, you can filter out all manually installed packages. Then you might want to search the package infos for the string "KDE".
    -> man pacman
    -> man grep
    I didn't install them manually, they were probably installed from careless pacman management on my part. There aren't that many actually, I just overlooked the -Q flag. Thanks for your help!

  • Major Issues Removing CS4 and Air.

    I was using CCleaner to clean up my registry the other day, and deleted some files. The following morning after starting up my computer, it freezes up and becomes unusable during normal start up.  Running in Safe Mode it works fine, and is the only way I can use the computer currently.
    The last thing I installed on my computer was CS4. When trying to run it, I would get a licensing error. So I tried to uninstall it using Add/Remove Programs.  The uninstaller repeatedly kept failing. Eventually, I was able to uninstall CS4 using AdobeCreativeCloudCleanerTool.  However, my computer still freezes during normal start up.  I noticed Adobe Air is still installed, and tried to uninstall using Add/Remove Programs as well. It fails as well, saying I need to contact my administrator. I downloaded the Air Installer to my desktop and tried running as administrator, but it just tries to update, and fails saying I need to contact administrator. I have tried following the instructions here: How To Uninstall Adobe AIR (Windows) - PCMech, to uninstall using command prompts, but this give me an error message and wont work either. So far I have found no other solutions.
    Now it could very well be that the Adobe programs are not what are causing my issues, but I would like to eliminate them as a possibility if I can. I also do not like the fact that they are so difficult to remove.  I am rapidly reaching my wits end here. I have no idea what else to try.  Please I could really use some help. Thank you in advance.

    As a sidenote, you will have to deal with any config files in $HOME and other runtime generated files yourself.
