Issue removing USB drives

Hey,
I am encountering a weird issue when trying to remove external USB hardrives.
I click eject, drag the icon to the trash/eject icon in the dock, but nothing happens. The files aren't in use or anything (as far as I know), and it wont let me eject the drive.
When I physically remove the drive, I first get the 'disk in use' notice, then I get the you're-a-bad-boy for doing that warning that says I removed it while it was in use.
What's wrong, and how do I fix this?

Intel iMac -
I get the same message regularly when trying to ejecting flash drives, but mainly with a Memorex Traveldrive. It's formatted for pc. It doesn't matter if any programs were running. I right-click 'eject' and it sits there for awhile, then I get the message the drive is still in use. It's not. I click 'OK' and then right-click 'eject' and then it will immediately eject. It also occasionally happens with Sandisk flash drives whether pc or mac formatted.
Same thing happens on my other intel iMac. Both have 2 1/2 gigs of ram, both are 2ghz duo core running 10.5.7, but it happened on earlier updates also (10.5.6, 10.5.5).

  • Not able to safely remove USB drive while Labview is open

    To all the Gurus,
I am using LabView 8.5 and have made an Application which requires user to download data from USB drive/stick. So when VI runs user asked to select a .TXT file from USB to download. Here whole operation completes as desired. ONLY PROBLEM I am facing is when download completes User tries to "safely remove USB drive" where windows gives a warning saying USB is in use and cannot be removed.
In this particular VI I am using file dialog function to browse through USB and let user select a file. I even tried using open file function but it is giving same error.
The only way I can safely remove USB after downloading is by exiting Labview which is not feasible for my application.
is it a Bug in 8.5 or is there any different way to do it?
Any type of help will be appreciated.

You can call the SetCurrentDirectory Windows API function (see attachment), but if you follow the link you'll see it warns about using it in multi-threaded apps. I have no experience with it, so I can't comment.

  • Removable USB drive not automounting in xfce4

Removable USB drives automount in every other window manager I've tried(lxde, gnome, kde). I have thunar-volman installed(not sure what it's for though), and I've went to Applications Menu > Settings > Removable Drives and Media and ticked "Mount removable media when inserted", to no avail.
    My .xinitrc file:
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
      for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
        [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
      done
      unset f
    fi
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice

Manually mounting the USB drive works however.

I have decided to ditch xfce4 and go with KDE, which automounts without any fuss.

  • Crash at launch after removing USB drive during import

I was importing a large set of photos and yanked the USB drive out where the Photos library lives by mistake.
Now the Photos app crashes a few seconds every time after launch with the following exception:
Assertion failure in -[__RKMasterMetadataHelper initWithMaster:], /SourceCache/PhotoApp/PhotoApp-209.52/lib/redrock/Database/Models/mutators/RKMa sterMutator.m:58
    Invalid parameter not satisfying: master
    abort() called
Since abort() is being called, I assume that somebody wrote the code to catch this error but considered that it's a rare enough of an edge case not to bother properly recovering from the error.
I've searched the documentation but could not find anything. Is there a way to repair a Photos library?
I've already verified the disk and the volume. No errors could be found.

That did not help - BUT
Although i do not have my Wacom Cintiq UX21 anymore - The Mac had leftovers from an uninstalled driver.
As a got todays new driver from Wacom - it solved the problem.....!!??
I don use the Cintiq, but a new driver fixed the Illustrator problem !!

  • Removable USB drive shows up on desktop when running 10.6 but not 10.8

My USB jump drive shows up just fine on my mac book pro running OS 10.6.8 - but the same drive in my friends brand new mac book pro running 10.8 when he plugs it in absolutely nothing shows up on the desk top and can't find any evedence that its connected. I'm worried it might be the port. Any thoughts on what might cause 10.8 not to read it? Otherwise I think his port is defective

You're awesome thanks! I tried to find settings for external disks and was losing my mind lol. He is new to mac and I'm not an expert - so trying to mirror my mac book when I'm running 10.6, quite a bitt different to me, so I was struggling. Thanks!

  • Safely Remove USB Drives: Gnome

I am using Arch-64bit-Gnome3, Shell and other gnome defaults.
While trying to remove my External Hard Disk I noticed that there is NO "Safely Remove" in right click menu. Since I also use and have used other distros with gnome I know that this is feature has always been there. However, in Arch its not there by default. I don't know if this is the 'Arch Way'.
I have 'Disk-Utility' intalled so I was wondering if there is any package that I need to install or any configuration to be set to get this 'Safely Remove' feature in my right click context menu. Without this and using only unmount the External Hard Disk is not completely disabled or deactivated to be safely unpluged.
Please guide me to a proper Solution.
    Thanks...

  • Manage USB drives / removal with VMWare Workstation in Unity mode

We have a peice of legacy software that only runs on windows XP. Our deployment has it running on VMware Workstation in Unity mode. A constant issue is USB drives. The users need to connect USB drives to the legacy app.
The way i'ts currently managed: the drives are set to auto-mount into VMWare with the VID and PID of the drives. Then a DriveRemove.exe utility bat file is setup to eject the drives, and a shortcut is placed on the users desktop. Is there a better way to do this?

Really disappointed in Apple after this!
I've had my iPhone 4S still on iOS5, and wanted to update to iOS6 today. I tried over the air, but it kept failing and suggesting that I try it with iTunes. My iPhone hasn't been connected to iTunes for months, so I first had to update, which makes updating already quite annoying as it doesn't work as intended.
After updating my iTunes, it found my iPhone and I hit Update. After some time it just stopped and failed on me, my iPhone went into recovery mode. After reconnecting to iTunes I get the message; "Your iPhone is in recovery mode, please recover" with a "OK" button. I hit that button and the Update/Restore screen disappears.
Luckily I found the log files in my User data folder and were able to figure out the error number, but for a normal user this would be a point they would give up! My next smartphone might not be an iPhone, the hardware and the experience is great on an iPhone. But updating/settings/app-management and iTunes just suck!

  • Installing Sol10 from DVD - USB drive as flash source

OK. First I managed to format the removable USB drive as UFS. Then I
could mount it as a UFS drive and copy my flash archive file onto it.
I've got another machine that I want to install Solaris 10 and use
this flash archive. So I boot from DVD and was hoping to be able to
specify the USB drive as location of flash archive. Trouble is even
going into the mini-shell it doesnt seem to work.
Any ideas? Or are there easier ways to do this?
I did think of Jumpstart or specifying the flash location as netwrok
drive or FTP but I dont think thats going to work. Trouble is first
time around I had a job getting the network interface to work - not
supported during the solaris 10 install but had to install a driver
    later.
Is there any way to slipstream this driver into the Solaris 10
install? (like you can do with windows)

I am trying to install Windows (8, specifically, but that has nothing to do with my problem) on my MacBook Pro 15-inch, mid 2009 (3.06 Ghz Intel Core 2 duo, 4 GB 1067 Mhz memory) running OS X 10.8.2.
I have a Windows 8 ISO and a 8 GB USB drive, so it is my understanding that I should be able to create a Windows install disk on the USB drive using boot camp. This looks incredibly easy based on every tutorial I have found online, and if I got the screenshot they all show me, I'm sure I would have no trouble:
However this is not the screenshot I get. Originally I was trying to do this last night on OS X 10.7, and I thought the issue might be with my version of bootcamp, but I have now purchased and upgraded to 10.8 and have the same issue with boot camp 5.0, that is my Boot Camp initialization looks like this:
As you can see, I am missing the key option of creating a Windows install disk.
I've exhausted my google-ing capabilities trying to find out why my Boot Camp does not give me this option, or trying to find a work-around, but it seems to create a Windows install disk from an ISO on a USB without Boot Camp can't be done on a Mac.
Can anyone please help me resolve this issue?
You are nearly right, it can't be done on a Mac that has an optical drive, and yours does. Burn the ISO to a DVD.

  • IPod being mistaken for PC removable disk drive

I just got an iPod and made the mistake of plugging it in before installing the software. After several uninstall/reinstalls and resets I tried to restore it using the updater because iTunes refused to see it. Something happened and in the middle of the restore it gave me some kind of can not write error. The iPod showed up in my computer as a disk drive and when I tried to click on it it said that it was not formatted so stupidly I reformatted it and now it is beeing seen by the computer as a removable usb drive and the updater won't recognize it so that I can restore the factory settings... What should I do?

try to have it restored by a mac computer than try to restore it again to a pc.mine worked that way.though without having to say that i dont have any problems with the pod and windows

  • HP USB Drive not detected

I bought a new 16GB HP USB Drive a day ago. The drive is not recognised by my mac. When I plug the drive in nothing happens.
    - other USB drives work as normal
    - I tried both USB ports (i.e. it's not a mac hardware issue)
    - the USB drive works with my PC
I don't see the USB drive in the disc utilities option. Can anyone suggest what I should do next?

1- Using Bootcamp switch to Windows. It will detect your memory flash HP 16 GB.
2- Click on my Computer, then right click on HP 16GB icon
    3- Select Format
4- Format your Flash selecting FAT32
5- When finished reboot back to MAC and you are ready to go.
    Hope it works for all.
You don't need to boot into Windows, you can format the drive using Disk Utility in OSX

  • Issue with usb flash and removable hard drives in Lion. (also an install tip)

Having an issue with my usb flash and removable hard drives.  I plug them in and Lion does not display all my files/folders, I take it out and plug it into my snow leopard machine and all the files/folders are there, does anyone have this issue?
It does it on my macbook pro which was a snow leopard upgrade to Lion and it does it on my macbook which was a clean install of Lion via a bootable flash drive.
The computers both work great in all other aspects, so there were no errors on installation. It's plain and simple, some files/folders are not showing up that are present on the drives and viewable on all other non-lion OS's mac and PC.
Also a word on installs, I highly suggest doing a clean install (delete and reformat drive them install Lion vs a snow leopard ugrade) my machine that was a clean install (macbook) runs 50% faster and smoother than the upgraded one (macbook pro).

Yes, you can use your backup disk drives in the manner you describe, but Apple provides conflicting information on the subject.
    From Mac Basics: Time Machine
Time Machine can’t backup to an external drive that's connected to an AirPort Extreme, Time Capsule, or a drive formatted for Microsoft Windows ...
From Time Machine doesn't back up to AirPort Extreme AirPort Disks
Time Machine in Mac OS X v10.5 or later can be used to back up to many kinds of Mac OS Extended-formatted drives, but you cannot choose an AirPort Extreme 802.11n's AirPort Disk as a Time Machine backup volume.
However, you can choose Time Capsule AirPort Disks or internal disks as a Time Machine backup volume.
They have yet to resolve this discrepancy.
All other available technical details regarding Time Machine's use seem to indicate that a USB HD connected to Time Capsule should meet Time Machine's requirements. For what it's worth I have been using an external HDD connected to the Time Capsule's USB port and it seems to function just fine.

  • IPhone 5 iOS 6.1.4 and Windows 7 x64 USB Driver Issues

Been pulling my hair out with this one for the last week or so and haven't had any luck finding anything on the forums or the web regarding a solution short of a full reinstall of Windows 7 which I am not prepared to do at this time; so hoping someone here can shine some light on this for me
I have a iPhone 5 that is updated to iOS 6.1.4 and a recently built Windows 7 64-bit machine. All of my other USB devices function fine (keyboard, mouse, Xbox 360 wireless receiver for Windows, and a Seagate 2TB external USB drive). I've downloaded the most recent version of iTunes, installed successfully and then attempt to plug in my phone to sync. I get the standard Windows *ding* that I've attached a device and 1 of 2 things happens (I haven't been able to determine what causes one reaction to happen versus the other): Windows will successfully install the 'Apple USB Mobile Device Driver' successfully and it will appear under my USB devices in Device Manager. However - iTunes will not recognize the phone and I cannot see it in Windows either. In the 'Devices and Printers' snap-in my iPhone will appear under 'Unspecified Devices' as the 'Apple USB Mobile Device'. The iTunes diagnostics fail to find a connected device so the tests fail. As soon as I unplug the device, the strangest thing happens: Windows will start trying to install a device driver and after a few seconds it will fail stating that the "MTP Device Driver" installation failed because the device was unplugged. iTunes also thrown an error "iTunes cannot connect to this iPhone" throwing error code 0XE8000065 (I've also seen error code 0XE8000085 as well)
After some finagling, I've managed to get Windows to recognize the device under 'Portable Devices' in Device Manager as an "MTP USB Device" using the generic driver. At this point, I've tried updating the driver and manually specifying the Apple USB driver located in the C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Drivers which updates successfully but then changes the device to "Apple USB Mobile Device" and moves it under the USB Devices in Device Manager; and Windows nor iTunes can see it even still.
I've tried removing iTunes several times and ensuring that all remnants of the installation are gone (registry and folders on the installation drive) and have disconnected all my USB devices short of the keyboard and mouse and still I get the same results. At this point, I'm afraid that a re-install of Windows is going to be the solution; but it's a drastic one (I have a SSD drive where Windows is installed along with all of my games for faster load times/better performance and do not want to have to redownload\reinstall all of them) and I'm not prepared to undertake it at this time, which is why I'm posting here
I've used a utility called USBDeview that sees my phone is connected - so I know from a functional standpoint that my USB ports are good and working. I also know the cable is good too - my daughter's PC (Windows 7 32-bit with NO iTunes) immediately sees the device when I plug it in, installs the drivers, recognizes it as an iPhone and I can then see/browse it in Windows Explorer like I would normally expect. My work PC (Windows 7 64bit, NO iTunes) sees the device just fine as well. I would immensely appreciate anyone that has seen this issue or has any additional solutions I can try.
It's also worth mentioning that I've never used Kapersky antivirus so the UPPERFILTERS value in the registry that I've seen as a solution on some forums is not present on my machine. I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials as my antivirus (no flaming please lol - it meets my needs and is extremely lightweight, which is why I'm using it on a gaming rig) and it's not indicating any issues. I've also tried running iTunes as an administrator (even though my account is a local admin on the machine) and that does not have any effect either.
If there is anything I left out, please let me know; and I thank you in advance!

  • USB drive access issues when using Windows Backup Win7Pro

I've run into a similar issue. I'm using an RD1000 USB drive which uses hard drives as removable media.  There's an alert which states "Windows backup  needs a CD/DVD or USB Drive to continue."  It then states I
can continue the backup on the existing media or insert blank media.  By simply selecting Continue the backup will proceed but this interrupts the backup every night so the backup won't automatically run until that challenge is responded too.  I checked
permissions and reloaded the MS windows driver for the drive.  I tried exFat and NTSF formats. Not sure how to force it to automatically proceed.  The backup is only a tenth of the size of the total available drive space. Any
    ideas?

USB Drives works, but does not show up in "Safely Remove Hardware"
    Here are my symptom
    - USB Flash Drives , USB External HDD works normally
    - I can see them in "My Computer"
    - I can open "Safely Remove Hardware" via Run Command, but there is no device in the list
    - They show up as "Disk drives" in device manager
    - When I right click their icons in "My Computer", there is no option to "Eject" them
    - In "Disk Management", they show up as "Basic". Prior to this issue, they were "Removable"
After I tested, it seems that my Vista detects every USB storage device as a normal HDD.
I don't know why but I'd appreciate any help because I have to plug-in and remove those drives often, especially flash drives.

  • USB Drives (Fat formatted) mounting and size issues

    Hello all,
Not really a major pain in the rear but rather a question as to whether anyone else has encountered this problem.
I have a kingston Data Traveler usb drive 256mb. When connected to my Intel mac mini dual core, and then disconnect it to copy drivers to an XP laptop. Upon reconnecting the drive to the mini, i find that it would not remount until i log out and then back in again. This does not happen all of the time however.
    And the other issue...
When deleting anything from the drive the info states that the amount of space available is still the same as before the deletion. When you check the size of the .trashes icon it is around the same size as the files/folders deleted. This is the same even when dismounted and then remounted if it does.
If anyone has experienced these issues and found a solution, please let me know.
    Many thanks

Can't beleive how stoopid i was for posting this problem. Just remove the trash when the stick is in. Duh
