Issue Resolving WSUS Server Across VPN

Hello All,
I have 18 sites connected by cisco SA520's to our main office via broadband connections. I can ping my primary server from the remote sites. I have GPO's that are writing to my remote XP SP3 computers telling them the name of my wsus server http://my-server but they are not logging on the wsus server for windows updates. When I open an IE window on a remote computer and type in http://my-server I get the Cisco admin page A DNS error occurred while opening the page.
The Cisco device is a DHCP server, has my main office DNS and WINS servers IP addresses under the LAN settings. Clients are getting DNS and WINS entries at the remote sites for my main site.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Willis

With the FQDN you still recieve the DNS error and the Cisco admin page is displayed?  When you do a nslookup what IP address does it resolve to and is this the correct IP address of your wsus server?
Is that server being NAT'ed outside?  Is this a seperate machine or does WSUS reside on the DC itself?  Do you have any other services such as sharepoint installed on the same server?  Did you install WSUS on a different port such as 8530?  Did you modify the host header of the WSUS IIS entry?

http://www.wsuswiki.com/WSUSServerFAQ
Check the port of WSUS:  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb632477.aspx
Verify that WSUS is assigned an IP address in IIS.  Verify that port 80,443, and or 8530 are open in the firewall.
From what you mentioned previously it appears the address is being resolved to the address of the ASA which is why you receiving the Cisco Admin page.
From a remote client do a nslookup and verify that it is resolving correctly.  If it is do a tracert and verify that it is going across the tunnel.  Post a scrubbed running-config.  Also in GPO you can use just the IP address of the server ex: http://10.10.10.15 or http://10.10.10.15:8530.
Is this the only DNS issue you are experiencing?  Is group policy being processed correctly?  Have you checked eventvwr.exe for any additonal errors?

  • WSUS server and client configuration issues

I just inherited WSUS from my predecessor (it was turned off because of a full disk) so I’m still learning how to use it. Turning it back on I changed where updates should come from, they were stored locally and now I’m pulling them down off of the Microsoft
Update location. What I’m seeing is that I have a bunch of computers that WSUS “sees” but are showing “Failed or Needed” status. Unless I visit each machine and manually do the updates this status does not change. Additionally I have some client computers
(Windows 7) that are not showing up as managed by WSUS. If I reading this right I’m running version Update Services 6.2.9200.16384 on Management Console 3.0 Version 6.2 (build 9200) on Windows Server 2012.
How can I force WSUS to automatically update the “Failed and Needed” devices?
How can I get those clients that are not being managed by WSUS to be managed?
Some of the things that I have done so far on the server and clients are:
Create a GPO (see attached for WSUS)
    wuauclt
    /detectnow
    wuauclt /reportnow
    wuauclt.exe /detectnow
    gpupdate /force after
    modifying the GPO
I even ran the SolarWinds WSUS diagnostic (as a non-administrator) and got this as the output:
    # Solarwinds® Diagnostic Tool for the WSUS Agent # 1/23/2015
    Machine state
User rights:  User does not have administrative rights (Administrator rights are not available)
      Update service status:  Running
      Background Intelligent Transfer service status:
    Running
      OS Version:  Windows 8.1 Pro
Windows update agent version:   7.9.9600.17489 (WU Agent is OK)
    Windows Update Agent configuration settings
      Automatic Update:    Enabled
Options:  Automatically download and notify of installation
Use WSUS Server: Not found (There is no such key)
Windows Update Server:  Not found (There is no such key)
Windows Update Status Server:  Not found (There is no such key)
WSUS URLs are identical:  Values are empty
WSUS Server Connectivity -- Connectivity check is impossible
    So, my questions are:
What tool do I use to configure the client machine?
How do I get WSUS to update my clients?
    Thanks
    Sam

    Steven,
I'm pretty sure that this is not the right forum to discuss this in but just so we can close this case.
On my computer I ran the command gpupdate /force I
then rebooted my computer to make sure that the group policy would be updated. The first screen shot is from my domain controller and the second is from my computer. As you can see the Domain Controller has the correct settings but the local machine doesn't.
Other parts of the DC GPO settings have worked so I'm somewhat comfortable that it is being propagated properly.

  • Client machine not reporting to wsus server

My server Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard x 64 virtual machine install in Hyper-v server and Install SCE management version 2010.
in sudden server stopped sending updated to client machine. So I check many and did many changed as per MS community forums. But still I have same issue.
Then I planned to install again SCE management server in different VM. But even though I am getting error that old SCE management server is existing in my domain.  Therefore I am afraid to change or remove any setting in AD since I have short
    of knowledge about SCE servers.
However my SCE server was working smoothly until 11-2013 and then suddenly stuck. When I check the server machine I found that local drive C: is getting full and SCE management is fail to start. So from that to now when ever I had free time I changed
many things. But unfortunately I couldn't get the sever back to normal.
Few changes which I made are below.
    - Remove and reinstall WAUS several times
    - Check online update and direct updated server SCE machine without getting updated from SCE
    - Remove dotnet frame work and updated version 4
    - product configuration wizard reconfigure
    - Repair management agent in client machine.
Kindly help for me to repair my SCE server or make another installation without having change of settings.
It would be highly appreciated if you could resolve issue

Can you try the below to reset the authorization and force a connection back from one of the win 7 machines:
it should help pinpoint exact issues.
    1. Record the system time.
    2. Reboot the system (or restart the Windows Update service).
    3. After reboot run the command wuauclt
    /resetauthorization /detectnow.
    4. Wait 30 minutes.
    5. Post the entries from the WindowsUpdate.log starting at the time recorded in Step #1.
Do you have any Windows 7 machines that are reporting? Are other machines with different operating systems reporting correctly?

  • Switching WSUS server and Windows 8.1/Server2008/Server2012 clients won't connect, Windows 7/Server2003 is fine

I need to split the load of my WSUS on to another site because the amount of computers is straining the internet connection in the amount of uploads performed.
However I'm having an issue at the second WSUS where only Windows 7 and Server 2003 clients will update...
Windows 8.1 and Server 2008 and Server2012 won't update giving the following error codes: 8024400A and 80072EE2
The WSUS is a Server 2012 with Local Update Publisher 1.1 installed. It works fine locally at the site but not across our WAN.
The clients appear in the WSUS console but fail to check for updates.
I've tried it with the firewall turned off...
Both WSUS servers are using Microsoft SCEP 2012.
Has anyone out there experienced this? Or have any suggestions to fix?
    Cheers.

    Hi there,
I spoke too soon, I think I got one Windows 8 client to update yesterday by fluke. Now today it won't.
There's not much different between the W7 and W8 systems they both use the same antivirus. Same software but updated on W8.
    Here is the windows update.log:

  • WSUS Server settings and Migrating SCCM 2007 Clients to SCCM 2012 R2

I am in the process of migrating a site from SCCM 2007 to SCCM 2012 R2.
Whilst doing this I came across the following issue:
The first issue is the workstations are woefully out of date, patch and update-wise, some have never had a patch applied as the branch IT staff are building them from the original disk. The policy is set in the SCCM 2007 client to point the machines at
the 2007 WSUS server, which is not set to deliver any updates to 2007 clients and hasn't been for a while. So as soon as the client is installed they lose the ability to get updates from Microsoft and don't get them from the 2007 WSUS server either.
Issue number 2 is the machines are a mixture of hand-built machines to SCCM 2007 delivered images, the SCCM image is patch using offline patching so they are somewhat up-to-date, but the hand-built machines are not and as there is no standardization on
the Microsoft Update client settings, the IT person on-site sets it to whatever he/she feels like, as it makes no difference once the client is installed and the policy applied.
So, when I come to update the client from 2007 to 2012, the following occurs
The Client uninstalls, and the GPO policy settings for Windows Update are removed.
Depending on the setup of the client initially, some machines are then going to Microsoft for their updates (literally 100s) and although the new client is installed the policy update does not fire to update the Windows Update Policy settings, sometimes
for hours after the install finishes. My thoughts are that it just can't run the policy as it is bogged down by patches updating and, in some cases, rebooting and then updating some more.
As a workaround I have had to go in an physically disable Microsoft Update on these machines, which stops the downloading and eventually allows the policy to apply, after which the machine then begins to receive patches from WSUS in a controlled method during
    maintenance windows.
I have tried a number of approaches, even setting the Global Group Policy for Windows Update, but the install still removes the keys and basically sets Windows updates back to whatever it was set before the policy was applied and stays that way until the
new client is installed and the Machine policy reapplied. This can be speeded up by initiating it on the client obviously, but that would mean going to each client or using right-click tools on each machine, which is not an option.
What I would like to know is if there is something I am missing from my methods or is it just that I have never been on a site with such out of date workstations built in such different ways.
    Any help would be appreciated.

First note that clients do *not* get updates from WSUS in ConfigMgr. The Windows Update Agent (WUA) must point to the WSUS integrated into ConfigMgr (by virtue of having the SUP installed on it) but this is only to make the update catalog/metadata available
to it. Approving updates in WSUS is unsupported for ConfigMgr.
What you've described above is all working as designed although these clients are falling into a gap between the 2007 and 2012 configuration and thus they are reaching out to Windows Update during this gap and installing updates. To prevent this, you
need to disable automatic updates via a domain group policy. This will prevent all automated WUA activity including installing updates from any source automatically. This will not interfere with ConfigMgr Software Updates in any way though.

  • WSUS server not seeing Server 2012 machines

We have WSUS 3.2.7600.226 running on a Windows Server 2003 R2 machine, which has been working fine with our wide range of client computers. We recently added our first 4 Server 2012 machines to our domain. Although they show up in browse lists across
the network, WSUS doesn't "see" them at all. They don't show up anywhere in the Computers list, and a search for any of them comes up empty.
If I apply our default GPO to these servers, they are required to use the WSUS as their update server. That causes them to get no updates.
What can I do to make these clients show up? Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Have you installed KB2828185? If no, please try to install it on the WSUS server.
For detailed information, please refer to the link below,
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2828185
If issue persists, please post the windowsupdate.log of the client here. It may give some hints.

  • Server-side VPN detection

I came across an interesting post on server-side VPN detection, and am posting it here since it is of some relevance to Freedome users in this community.
    https://medium.com/@ValdikSS/detecting-vpn-and-its-configuration-and-proxy-users-on-the-server-side-1bcc59742413

I suspected that was the issue - no way for the local system to know when to route to VPN or local.
Problem with changing the network ranges is often the client network is not something I control - 'client' offices, wireless hotspots, hotels, etc.
Changing the server network while not impossible would be difficult as everything from printers, servers, network switches, not to mention how X Server so easily allows changing it's primary IP, are effected.
I can certain test that this is my only problem by reconfig'g my home setup.
I'm guessing a simpler and more flexible option in my case is creating a 10.0.2.x (VPN only) network internally adding an alias IPs to my XServe and other servers/boxes I would need to access from VPN (which would dish out 10.0.2 client numbers instad of 10.0.1 numbers). The only tricky part is name resolution, but since I control the DNS server and search names handed to the client, I could create a vpn.ourdomain.com and that could be the primary search domain, where all the records for VPN resources would return their 10.0.2.x. Client systems would/should be referencing resources by short name (hp8150).
Does that make sense - a VPN network on top the existing server network?

  • Certificates issued by communications server for client authentication

    Hi,
we ran into problem with those certificates, that are being issued by the lync server itself.  In our enteprise we have CX600 and CX3000 phones, and i know that certificate authentication is required for the phones to work (both for registrar and webservice).
However, now that users have lync installed, they have their communications server certificate assigned as well. The problem is when a user needs to sign a document with the certificate from our private CA, for most of the users, word or excel suggests to
use a certificate issued by communications server, not our ent CA. Maybe there is a way for LYNC to trust private enteprise CA and not give out its own certificates and STILL use certificate authentication?
    Thanks!

Facing almost the same issue, Lync (server) issues ClientAuth certs from "Communication Server", (btw
is not trusted of course), and in turns forces users to make a selection of which VPN cert to use when dialing in, instead of only one ClientAuth cert installed, they now have 2 ClientAuth certs installed, which our internal CA's should care about and NOT
    the Lync (server).
Don’t get how an MS product of this caliber can be built without proper PKI integration, how can it NOT utilize internally issued certs for client authentication???
Not the first though, SCCM and OSD is another example....
However, are you saying that Lync communication can’t be used without certificate authentication,
without the user being spammed with credential prompts?
Trying to get clarification on this…

  • Clients cannot update from WSUS server - error 8024400E

Alright, so I'm troubleshooting our WSUS server and seem to be stuck. I am running WSUS 3.2.7600.226 on Server 2003.  The client I have been using for testing is Windows 7 x64, but we have this issue on all clients (XP, 7 x86, and 7 x64).  I started
with an error of 800B0001 and after googling installed KB2720211 to fix it. Now I am getting error 8024400E on clients when I attempt to update. I followed a technet walkthrough and verified that my WSUS settings are all correct (at least regarding iis,
registry, gpo settings, and file system permissions). I am able to download CAB files from the WSUS server by going to the proper address in a browser. Here is a snippet from my WindowsUpdate log on my client:

I focused in on "GetAuthorizationCookie failure, error = 0x8024400E, soap client error = 7, soap error code = 400, HTTP status code = 200" and did some googling which all points at Microsoft Office 2003 SP1 update as being the culprit, and I followed
the instructions on a technet site to disable the update and am still getting the same error. I'm stumped at this point, and I thought I would post here in the hope that someone can help me before I end up just wiping it out and reinstalling (which I'm worried
    won't even solve it).

While you're definitely on the right track, the Office2003SP1 update really has not been an issue since WSUS Service Pack 2 was released in October 2009 (and really, the Office2003SP1 update that was the cause of this was replaced long before that even,
so you probably don't even have the defective update on your server).
However, the error is generally associated with the presence of defective update(s) on the WSUS server, so the first thing to do is address any potential issues caused by a failed install of KB2720211.
If the error still persists after verifying that all other aspects of the server are fully operational, review the list of not-Declined updates on your WSUS server and make sure that:
All Expired updates are Declined (and then run the Server Cleanup Wizard and let it delete the expired updates).
All approvals for older revisions have been removed (and then run the Server Cleanup Wizard and let it delete the older revisions).
All approvals for superseded updates have been removed. (And then, when they report as 100% Not Applicable, decline them, and then run the Server Cleanup Wizard so that it can delete the files associated with those updates).
Once all of the potentially problematic updates have been removed from the view of the Windows Update Agent, and if this error then persists, we can evaluate it from a more focused perspective.

  • WSUS server role on Windows Server 2012 R2 - Supported SQL Configurations

    According to
this page the supported SQL configurations for WSUS on Windows Server 2012/2012 R2 stop at SQL Server 2012 SP1, but there is no mention of SQL Server 2012 SP2 being supported.
However, both the SCCM 2012 R2
supported configuration page and this announcement state that SQL Server 2012 SP2 is fully supported on SCCM 2012 R2 with no
known limitations. Bearing in mind a big part of SCCM is to perform software updates which in turn requires WSUS to be installed...
... Is SQL Server 2012 SP2 supported on WSUS 4.0 (aka WSUS server role on Windows Server 2012 R2)?

The only thing that mattered for the versions mentioned on TechNet probably is the date the articles are published. I'm no Microsoft employee so I cannot guarantee you support even if I trace back some Microsoft article that explains the lifecycle of MS
    products and support.
Fact is that MDT uses a database, SQL is a database server. SQL server has all kinds of compatibility modes to support databases dating multiple versions back.
Another fact is that a Service pack is an
update to the software (be it a large one) Microsoft will not break compatibility with their own products (and may others that relay on SQL server) by an update.
And a last fact is that in general, updates are required when you need support. After all, updates fix issues, and engineers generally don't like ghosthunting a bug that has already been patched.

  • Specify WSUS server based on client location boundary

Hello. We are currently using SCCM 2012 R2 to do OSD at our main site, and I'm in the process of getting OSD working at our eight remote locations. Unfortunately, we haven't set up SUP yet (it's coming soon...I hope). So, in the interim, we specify our WSUS
server in the task sequence during imaging; or, inject updates into the WIM using a script if the latest updates "break" OSD. However, this poses a bit of a problem for our remote locations.
Currently, all our remote locations have their own OU in AD, and boundaries are set based on their OU. We also have IP address range boundaries at our remote locations so that unknown machines will get assigned to the correct boundary during imaging. Additionally,
we have a DP on-site at every remote location. Testing with our current task sequence shows that content is being pulled from the correct DP during imaging at the remote location (not across the WAN, which is great). But, I'm not sure how I would go about
adding a task sequence step that would specify each remote location's on-site WSUS server.
I'd rather not create eight more task sequences just to specify the WSUS server for each location, since managing one task sequence would be ideal. And, the fact that we will have SUP up soon, means we won't have to deal with this for long. So, is there
a way to check what boundary the machine is in during imaging, and make a task sequence step only run if it's in that boundary? I really appreciate and help and/or advice anyone can give me. Thanks.

Write a script that keys off of the IP gateway of the systems and then branches to set the WUA/WSUS registry values appropriately.
Alternatively, add 8 steps to the task sequence, each setting the appropriate WSUS serve in the registry for one location and add a WMI condition to the task that allows it to execute only if the client has the correct IP Gateway.
Branching based on the IP Gateway is the common denominator here are that's indicative of the client's locations. You could also use OU but IP Gateway is the standard method.

  • Issue in Weblogic Server - Server Stops abruptly

    Hi All,
I am facing an issue with Weblogic server(8.1). One of the managed servers stops abruptly. Server run for some days. After 5 or 6 days it stops without giving any log message. Admin(mgt server) and this managed server are running in the same box(AIX Environment). Below is the only log I got. Any idea why it is happening?
According to the BEA Message it may be due to network problem. Since both the servers are running in same box, i don't think it is network issue.
Can anyone please help me on this? - thanks in advance

I think you should be able to follow the same steps but whenever you come across Domain B in the instructions, just substitute the values for Domain A. Because it is the same domain you may not even have to go through some of the certificate steps. If you have questions I suggest you post them in the WLS Security forum.

  • SCCM 2007 R3 Software Updates Sync : 6703 WSUS server not configured

    Hi,
We run SCCM 2007 R3 in native mode (Software Update Point and WSUS both reside on SCCM site server). We're having issues running Software Updates Synchronization which have previously worked fine. In SMS_WSUS_Control_Manager the errors appear as follows
    MessageID:6703
    SMS WSUS Synchronization failed.
    Message: WSUS server not configured.
    Source: CWSyncMgr::DoSync.
The operating system reported error 2147500037: Unspecified error
I've followed the suggested fixes in
http://technet.micro...y/bb735874.aspx but still we have an issue.
If I open the WSUS console directly and run a manual synchronization from Microsoft this completes successfully. However, I presume this will not be using SSL which is what SCCM will want to use in native mode. I've checked the bindings in IIS on WSUS Administration
site to confirm that the certificate hasn't expired.
Any ideas what else I can try?
    Cheers,
    Paul
