Issue running VGA TV with Macbook Pro

Hi all, been a while since I've asked anything around here, hope I can get some help.
I'm trying to connect my Macbook Pro (late 2011) to our Sony Bravia 40" LCD TV (model# KDL-40V5100 if its needed) through its "PC" (i.e. VGA) input. I got a Mini Displayport to VGA adapter, and I've connected to the TV, but am having a couple of issues.
1. When I try to set the VGA Display's settings to 1920x1080 60 60 Hz, the TV says it's not receiving a signal.
2. When I lower the resolution on the VGA display, some will send a signal and some will not; however, when an image does appear, it's cropped off on all sides (i.e. zoomed in on the center).
3. None of the display resolution options other than 1920x1080 are in the proper 16:9 ratio. The display's native resolution is, according to Sony, 1920x1080, but it seems odd that none of the other options are t=the correct proportions.
So right now I can't connect to the TV and display a reliable image. At best I can get the center of the screen to appear, at some resolutions.
And all of this occurs effectively the same whether I mirror the displays or not.
Any help?

Hey ht.az,
Thanks for the question. it sounds like you are experiencing issues with Handoff and Continuity. The following resource may provide a solution:

Hello everyone, any ideas on how to connect my iphone to my mac, both my devices are paired but i haven't been able to connect them, every time I try to connect my iphone to my mac I get this error "Network is unavailable - Male sure network access is enable", I have tried forgetting the devices and paired them again and resetting the network settings, and even changing my iPhone's name. • External Hard Drive Issues using WD Passport with MacBook Pro

I am unable to view my external hard drive (WD Passport 160gb external hard drive model # wd1600me-01) with my MacBook Pro.  I already tried using the Utility Disk application by utilzing the repair function and mounting it.  Please help.  Any Suggestions?

Im familiar with that HD, I have one currently disassembled for just the bare HD...., it has a removable SATA bridge, if the HD wont spin up but the light comes on, on the HD, then the SATA bridge is bad.
If it appears in disk utility and the light comes on BUT the HD doesn't spin up, then either the SATA bridge is dead, or the HD is dead (least likely).
Youd have to crack open the HD, remove the SATA bridge cart thats plugged into the HD and put the HD into an enclosure or a HD dock to get the data
those external HD use a 50 cent SATA bridge famous for failing.  The curse of all the good HD externals is the junk 3rd party SATA bridges attached to them that crash and burn.
It doesn't matter it was used once and stored away for 5 years,.....HD lose their ferromagnetic properties at about 20-40%  at 4-6 years.
And if stored in a hot place, a LOT more.

  • Blue tooth issues with macbook pro late 2011

I purchased the new beats pill and havinng issues with connectivity with macbook pro. My Iphone works well. Any suggestions

I have a similar issue.  Have you had any luck with a fix, yet?  I have a Samsung sound bar, and my Ipad and Iphone both connect with no issues. The playback is uninterrupted with fine sound quality.  My 2011 13" Macbook Pro connects, however playback often sounds like a scratched CD.  Last year I called both, Samsung and Apple, and when all was said and done it was recommended that I bring the then brand new sound bar and my Macbook to an Apple Store.  Any suggestions I are appreciated.

  • External Monitor blurry with MacBook Pro

Good day, I have searched the forums but have not found a solution to my problem...
I recently purchased a Dell 2005FWP External Monitor and plugged it in (DVI to VGA) to my MacBook Pro. It automatically adjusted to a 800x600 resolution which of course is not ideal. The menu gives a long list of display resolutions but most of them are "not available" when I click on them. I have tried switching the docks and the monitors to the opposite sides on "Arrangement" of displays but I still don't get a different menu. I can't seem to find the menu of resolutions for the MacBook Pro either.
Please let me know what I am doing wrong...Sorry, I know I am clueless!!
    Thank you!

I have a ViewSonic VX2035wm display connected to my MacBook Pro - the image on the external monitor shows ghosting and double images like we used to see on old tube TVs.
Here is a post from MacFixIt.com that details my problem.
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20081020231611468
Late-2008 MacBooks: Image problems on external displays with mini-DisplayPort converters
The new MacBooks and MacBook Pros come with a Mini-DisplayPort adaptor for external video, and Apple supplies various adaptors (DP to DVI, and DP to VGA) to accommodate current monitors. Some users are having difficulties with their adaptors when connected to certain monitors.
    Apple Discussions poster Ocell writes:
"I have the exact same problem with my Viewsonic VG2030wm 20" LCD. I've ruled out bad DVI cables. The Macbook Pro works with my 12" Cintiq's display, and the Viewsonic works with my Intel iMac, so the video out/mini displayport adaptor/dvi cable/viewsonic display are all operational. It's just the specific combination of the Macbook Pro and Viewsonic that doesn't work."
This problem has been found to frequently occur with DVI adaptors attached to their computers, however it has also happened with users connecting to the VGA adaptors. In these cases, unlike the DVI situation where no signal gets through, users have noticed the screen blinking or shutting off at random times. While drivers may definitely be suspect, the problem appears to be hardware-related since users have experienced the issue both in Mac OS X as well as in Windows via Boot Camp.
The DisplayPort connections used on the new MacBooks have slight differences in their protocols than other connection types, which allows for expanded functions in smaller connectors, but also can run users into difficulties, especially when older connetion types are used. While there could be software involvement in this problem, it sounds like there's most likely a firmware-related problem that hopefully can be patched by Apple, or at least be accommodated for in a driver update.
    Things to Try
Reset the monitor to defaults If there is a method for fully resetting the monitor, try doing that first. Most have a menu option to reset to factory defaults, but in addition there may be a way to fully reset the device such as unplugging it for an extended period of time. This information may be available on the manufacturer's website, or users can just try unplugging the device for an extended period such as 20-30 minutes.
Toggle various monitor setups In the "Displays" system preferences, toggle desktop mirroring on and off to see if the monitor is not just extending the desktop to the second monitor. Especially if users have black wallpaper on their desktops, secondary monitors that are just serving as extended desktops may appear to be off when connected. Alternatively users can try dragging documents off the sides of their main monitor to see if they go over to the second monitor.
Reset the computer Users might try resetting the computer's PRAM (which does contain some graphics parameters) by holding the options, command, P, and R keys down at bootup until the computer resets and makes the boot chimes again. Release the keys and allow the computer to boot normally. Additionally, users might try resetting the computer's system management controller. Here is an Apple Support article on how to do that.
Use a different monitor Unfortunately, with hardware problems such as this users will not be able to do much, so if another monitor is available that works then users should switch to that.
Try another adaptor Many monitors support both VGA and DVI inputs, and there is potential for users to get things working by using another connection type. Additionally, while it may be a long shot, users might also try chaining together various adaptors. For instance, users might try going from displayport to DVI, and then using a DVI to VGA adaptor as the next connection, to see if that somehow sends a proper signal to the monitor.

  • Does Adobe Photoshop Elements work with MacBook Pro with Retina display?

Does Adobe Photoshop Elements work with MacBook Pro with Retina display, please?
Have searched Adobe website for answer - most recent is 2013 answer, saying no.
Contradicted by a staff ember who only referred to Photoshop, not Elements.
Reason I need it is that iPhoto does not support very high resolution photos - which I have now scanned onto my MacBook and do not want to re-scan!! After 90 minutes at my local Genius bar (lovely folk, very conscientiously searching for an answer...), re-scanning was their final piece of advice.
    Help, please...

    Hello Smis,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand you are having issues with your HP Monitor on your MAC. I am providing you with an HP Support document: Updating a Monitor Driver, where it states under the sub-heading Using HP monitors on a Mac "HP monitors are not supported in a Mac environment. However, newer Macs use graphics with VESA modes and can display to most HP LCD monitors. To do this, connect the monitor to the Mac while the Mac is off, and then turn on the MAC. The monitor should operate at 60Hz. The INF and software for the HP monitor are for Microsoft Windows and cannot be run in a standard MAC OS environment."
This being said all I can advise is that you check to see that the monitor is set to operat at 60Hz and contact Apple for assistance if that does not get your monitor displaying correctly.
I hope I have answered your question to your satisfaction. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Using Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with MacBook Pro, Air, Retina (with pictures)

Using Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with MacBook Pro, Air, Retina (with pictures)
The purpose of this discussion thread is to:
    (1) Get community thoughts around using alternative and complimentary mousing approaches with MacBooks
    (2) To share a current and searchable set of resources for those interested in leveraging a best-of-both-worlds approach for using a non-Apple Trackpoint Keyboard with an Apple MacBook.
    (3) To level-set the fact that a Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard works with MacBooks automatically and instantly out-of-the-box.
Note: I created this discussion because I found that all the other discussion threads related to using a Thinkpad Trackpoint Keyboard with MacBooks were archived and therefore I could not post my thoughts there.
I have been using MacBooks for 3+ years now.  Airs, Pros, Retinas etc.  I LOVE the built-in MacBook Apple Trackpad.  It is wonderful.  Apple has no equal as far as Trackpads go.
In addition, I have been using the Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with my MacBooks for ~2 years, and below is why I have found BOTH the Apple Trackpad and Thinkpad Trackpoint to be great.
The Trackpoint and Trackpad both have their sweet spots.  Personally I use the built-in Apple Trackpad on my MacBooks when I'm using my MacBook for less than 1 hour, loosely speaking.  If I am going to be heads-down for more than 1 hr writing, reading, surfing, graphic designing, programming, workshop facilitating, teaching, mindmapping, presenting, demoing, etc. then I pull out my "Lenovo Thinkpad USB Keyboard with Trackpoint (55Y9003) > https://www.google.com/search?&q=lenovo+thinkpad+trackpoint+usb+keyboard
I know many will laugh at me for using a Thinkpad Trackpoint Keyboard with a MacBook...  Keeping an open mind, let's just agree that there is historical precedence for alternative mousing devices.  If I could only choose one, I would use the Apple MacBook built-in Trackpad exclusively, however with alternatives come potential benefits.  Keep in mind that Apple, Microsoft, Logitech and many other companies make millions of dollars each year providing alternative peripheral devices for computers, and mousing is no exception.  Regardless, I just want to share my positive experiences using both. :-)
Why should you care?  For *some* people the following is true and meaningful.  The Trackpoint (the little red eraser head stick thingy) in the midle of the keyboard enables useful and unique dynamics/use-cases, including:
You don't have to take your hand(s) off the keyboard to mouse
You can independantly click without accidentally moving the mouse (Yes I know some people don't have issues with this)
You don't run out of finger-gesture runway when you're moving your mouse across the screen (I know this is a gray area for some people)
For mouse-movement-heavy applications (e.g. Graphics, drawing, etc.) the Trackpoint *is at times* more exacting
Below I share some pictures (which I know *look* ridiculous to some people, but none-the-less help demystify what this looks like.  And, while ridiculous looking, it is actually quite thin and elegant once you get over the initial shock of seeing these two diverse technologies combined in this way.
Rest assured, the keyboard shown below (google "55Y9003") is VERY light, thin and fits in almost any laptop case/backpack easily so it is not a big deal to carry it, if you work on-the-go.  In addition:
It is UNCANNY how well it fits on top of the keyboard space of all MacBooks.
It fits perfectly around the corners of the MacBook Pro/Air/Retina keyboard
Note: I took one of the 5 rubber feet/pads off the bottom of my keyboard, the one in the middle
Lastly, you can actually use the built-in Apple Trackpad at the SAME TIME as the Trackpoint Keyboard.
It is quite a nice best-of-both-worlds approach for people that like the benefits of the "Why should you care?" use cases above.
Please reply and comment with your thoughts and please let's keep it positive, constructive and friendly :-)
    Pictures Below:
My two Retina MBPs, one with and one without the keyboard, so you can easily see the difference.  (As if you wouldn't)
A slightly closer-up shot of just the RMBP with the Trackpoint Keyboard on top
Please reply and comment with your thoughts and please let's keep it positive, constructive and friendly :-)

Newer Bluetooth version of the ThinkPad External Trackpoint Keyboard available...
The new version is smaller, so you can use your MacBook Trackpad at the same time as your Trackpoint keyboard.
    Here is the Lenovo model/Part Number# 0B47190
Here is a picture of what it looks like:
Note: Just like the older larger USB model keyboard, there is a rubbery footpad in the middle of the bottom of the keyboard that I just peeled off.  Otherwise, it makes the "H" key press accidentally under-neath the keyboard.  Once I took that off, it fit perfectly over and around the built-in MacBook keyboard, so I can optionally put it on top of my MacBook for easy typing. :-)

  • Will Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 Run Successfully on a MacBook Pro running Version 10.9.3 Operating Software ?

Will Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 Run Successfully on a MacBook Pro running Version 10.9.3 Operating Software ?

Sorry it took me a while to come back. Anyway, I cleared out the old Xcode files and went into the Developers Download area and selected to download 4.6.3 and was presented with this window
I clicked on Savefile and it downloaded. I was intrigued as to why this would work as it was exactly what I had done before. Out of interest I decided to issue the download again and this time it created a zero byte disk image and a "part" file of 1.6mB. I shall just have to put that behind me (accepting that I don't understand why one download should work and all the precious attempts should fail) and move on.
Thank you for your help (it was my eyesight that caused me to think my OS version was 10.7.9 - it is indeed 10.7.5)

  • Time Capsule works with MacBook Pro (Mavericks) but not with IOS devices?  recent problem starting March 1, 2015.

I have a Time Capsule version 7.7.3 (model A1470) which has worked fine for almost 2 years with all devices, Apple and otherwise.  As of beginning of this month, March 2015 - no longer works with a new IPAD mini 3 and 6-month old iPhone 6 (both updated as of last night) BUT still works fine with MacBook Pro (Mavericks 10.9.5) and Epson printer XP-600.
On both IOS devices Airport Utility shows the Time Capsule and shows green light connection to internet, but never does the connection. The little status circle just keeps going round and never shows the Wifi rainbow symbol. both devices work fine on other Wifi's.  Airport Utility on iPhone actually connects enough to check on Airport base station's firmware 7.7.3 and says it is up to date!  but sadly stays on LTE.
    Have tried resetting, replugging etc...
Also, tried checking on updates.  Nothing shows in Airport Utility. When I try to go to see past updates ~/Library/Application Support/Apple/AirPort/Firmware to see if updated, there is no Airport in the Apple folder?
    A mystery...

Reset the TC to factory and redo the setup. see details below.
Here is the typical list of things you should try.. and if this doesn't help post again.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer or perhaps it is better using iOS on the phone or ipad currently having issues.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. For iOS the fixed channels particularly for 2.4ghz has helped.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue. This is a problem for a TC in bridge mode.
If this is of no help.. what modem do you have? What function other than modem does it have.. ie none or router??
How is the TC connected into the network? What function does it have? Router or bridge for example.
Post a few screenshots of the setup.

i have just used air display with macbook pro. i have disconnected now from apple tv. but my laptop screen is still very small like its connected to the tv. this means all the tabs and writing is very small. like the display down the bottom where al the applications are, is n the middle of the page and not spread down the bottom. this is seriously annoying! all the writing is every small and the tabs are small and its hard to read.  the air display link has disappeared from my computer. but the laptop screen is still very small. i want to know how do i get rid of this and return my macbook screen to its normal size. thank you

    Hello chrispyw,
If your content is still being displayed incorrectly, I would check the resolution setting for the built in display with this article:
OS X Yosemite: Adjust your display’s resolution
If it keeps happening whenever you use AirPlay then I would use this section of the following article to reset the display system:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
